We prove the following two results for a given uniformly locally finite metric space with Yu's property A:
1) The group of outer automorphisms of its uniform Roe algebra is isomorphic to its group of bijective coarse equivalences modulo closeness.
2) The group of outer automorphisms of its Roe algebra is isomorphic to its group of coarse equivalences modulo closeness.
The main difficulty lies in the latter. To prove that, we obtain several uniform approximability results for maps between Roe algebras and use them to obtain a theorem about the `uniqueness' of Cartan masas of Roe algebras. We finish the paper with several applications of the results above to concrete metric spaces.
Gelfand-Naimark duality (Commutative $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Locally compact Hausdorff spaces) is extended to $C^*$-algebras $\equiv$ Quotient maps on locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Using this duality, we give for an \emph{arbitrary} bounded operator on a complex Hilbert space of several dimensions, a functional calculus and the existence theorem for nontrivial invariant subspace.
Gelfand duality between unital commutative C*-algebras and Compact Hausdorff spaces is extended to all unital C*-algebras, where the dual objects are what we call compact Hausdorff quantum spaces. We apply this result to obtain, a characterization of unitary groups of C*-algebras, and, for arbitrary bounded Hilbert space operators, (i) A spectral theorem cum continuous functional calculus, and (ii) A proof of the general Invariant Subspace Theorem. Also described is a nonabelian generalization of Pontryagin duality of abelian locally compact groups.
We extend the Gelfand-Naimark duality of commutative C*-algebras, "A COMMUTATIVE C*-ALGEBRA -- A LOCALLY COMPACT HAUSDORFF SPACE" to "A C*-ALGEBRA--A QUOTIENT OF A LOCALLY COMPACT HAUSDORFF SPACE". Thus, a C*-algebra is isomorphic to the convolution algebra of continuous regular Borel measures on the topological equivalence relation given by the above mentioned quotient. In commutative case this reduces to Gelfand-Naimark theorem. Applications: 1) A simultaneous extension, to arbitrary Hilbert space operators, of Jordan Canonical Form and Spectral Theorem of normal operators 2) A functional ca…
We show that the following five categories are equivalent: (1) the opposite category of commutative von Neumann algebras; (2) compact strictly localizable enhanced measurable spaces; (3) measurable locales; (4) hyperstonean locales; (5) hyperstonean spaces. This result can be seen as a measure-theoretic counterpart of the Gelfand duality between commutative unital C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff topological spaces.
We prove constructive versions of various usual results related to the Gelfand duality. Namely, that the constructive Gelfand duality extend to a duality between commutative nonunital C*-algebras and locally compact completely regular locales, that ideals of a commutative C*-algebras are in order preserving bijection with the open sublocales of its spectrum, and a purely constructive result saying that a commutative C*-algebra has a continuous norm if and only its spectrum is open. We also extend all these results to the case of localic C*-algebras. In order to do so we develop the notion of o…
In the setting of C*-categories, we provide a definition of "spectrum" of a commutative full C*-category as a one-dimensional unital saturated Fell bundle over a suitable groupoid (equivalence relation) and prove a categorical Gelfand duality theorem generalizing the usual Gelfand duality between the categories of commutative unital C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff spaces. Although many of the individual ingredients that appear along the way are well-known, the somehow unconventional way we "glue" them together seems to shed some new light on the subject.
We present a duality between the category of compact Riemannian spin manifolds (equipped with a given spin bundle and charge conjugation) with isometries as morphisms and a suitable "metric" category of spectral triples over commutative pre-C*-algebras. We also construct an embedding of a "quotient" of the category of spectral triples introduced in arXiv:math/0502583v1 into the latter metric category. Finally we discuss a further related duality in the case of orientation and spin-preserving maps between manifolds of fixed dimension.
** Draft Version ** To any boolean topos one can associate its category of internal Hilbert spaces, and if the topos is locally separated one can consider a full subcategory of square integrable Hilbert spaces. In both case it is a symmetric monoidal monotone complete $C^{*}$-category. We will prove that any boolean locally separated topos can be reconstructed as the classifying topos of "non-degenerate" monoidal normal $*$-representations of both its category of internal Hilbert spaces and its category of square integrable Hilbert spaces. This suggest a possible extension of the usual Gelfand…
We collect several foundational results regarding the interaction between locally compact spaces, probability spaces and probability algebras, and commutative $C^*$-algebras and von Neumann algebras equipped with traces, in the "uncountable" setting in which no separability, metrizability, or standard Borel hypotheses are placed on these spaces and algebras. In particular, we review the Gelfand dualities and Riesz representation theorems available in this setting. We also present a canonical model that represents probability algebras as compact Hausdorff probability spaces in a completely func…
We construct a large class of morphisms, which we call partial morphisms, of groupoids that induce $*$-morphisms of maximal and minimal groupoid $C^*$-algebras. We show that the association of a groupoid to its maximal (minimal) groupoid $C^*$-algebra and the association of a partial morphism to its induced morphism are functors (both of which extend the Gelfand functor). We show how to geometrically visualize lots of $*$-morphisms between groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we construct a groupoid models of the entire inductive systems of the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$ and the Raz…
We compare two influential ways of defining a generalized notion of space. The first, inspired by Gelfand duality, states that the category of 'noncommutative spaces' is the opposite of the category of C*-algebras. The second, loosely generalizing Stone duality, maintains that the category of 'pointfree spaces' is the opposite of the category of frames (i.e., complete lattices in which the meet distributes over arbitrary joins). One possible relationship between these two notions of space was unearthed by Banaschewski and Mulvey, who proved a constructive version of Gelfand duality in which th…
To each unital C*-algebra A we associate a presheaf Σ^A, called the spectral presheaf of A, which can be regarded as a generalised Gelfand spectrum. We develop a categorical notion of local duality and show that there is a contravariant functor from the category of unital C*-algebras to a suitable category of presheaves containing the spectral presheaves. We clarify how much algebraic information about a C*-algebra is contained in its spectral presheaf. A nonabelian unital C*-algebra A that is neither isomorphic to C^2 nor to B(C^2) is determined by its spectral presheaf up to quasi-Jordan iso…
We introduce $C^*$-algebras associated to the foliation structure of a quantum flag manifold. We use these to construct $SL_q(3,\mathbb{C})$-equivariant Fredholm modules for the full quantum flag manifold $X_q = SU_q(3)/T$ of $SU_q(3)$, based on an analytical version of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand complex. As a consequence we deduce that the flag manifold $ X_q $ satisfies Poincaré duality in equivariant $ KK $-theory. Moreover, we show that the Baum-Connes conjecture with trivial coefficients holds for the discrete quantum group dual to $SU_q(3)$.
Every partial algebra is the colimit of its total subalgebras. We prove this result for partial Boolean algebras (including orthomodular lattices) and the new notion of partial C*-algebras (including noncommutative C*-algebras), and variations such as partial complete Boolean algebras and partial AW*-algebras. The first two results are related by taking projections. As corollaries we find extensions of Stone duality and Gelfand duality. Finally, we investigate the extent to which the Bohrification construction, that works on partial C*-algebras, is functorial.
Several formulas for computing coarse indices of twisted Dirac type operators are introduced. One type of such formulas is by composition product in $E$-theory. The other type is by module multiplications in $K$-theory, which also yields an index theoretic interpretation of the duality between Roe algebra and stable Higson corona.

We study countable saturation of the metric reduced products and introduce continuous fields of metric models indexed by locally compact, separable, completely metrizable spaces. Saturation of the reduced product depends both on the underlying index space and the model. By using the Gelfand--Naimark duality we conclude that the assertion that the \vCech--Stone remainder of the half-line has only trivial automorphisms is independent from ZFC. The consistency of this statement follows from Proper Forcing Axiom and this is the first known example of a connected space with this property.
In this paper we put forward the definition of particular subsets on a unital C*-algebra, that we call isocones, and which reduce in the commutative case to the set of continuous non-decreasing functions with real values for a partial order relation defined on the spectrum of the algebra, which satisfies a compatibility condition with the topology (complete separateness). We prove that this space/algebra correspondence is a dual equivalence of categories, which is in fact only a mild generalization of the Gelfand-Naimark duality. Thus we can expect that general isocones could serve to define a…
This work provides a generalization of the Gelfand duality to the context of noncommutative locally $C^*$ algebras. Using a reformulation of a theorem proven by Dauns and Hofmann in the 60's we show that every locally $C^*$ algebra can be realized as the algebra of continuous sections of a $C^*$ bundle over a compactly generated topological space. This result is used then to show that on certain special cases locally $C^*$ algebras can be used to define certain sheaves of locally $C^*$ algebras that, inspired by the analogy with commutative geometry, we call noncommutative spaces. The last sec…
The aim of this paper is to relate algebraic quantum mechanics to topos theory, so as to construct new foundations for quantum logic and quantum spaces. Motivated by Bohr's idea that the empirical content of quantum physics is accessible only through classical physics, we show how a C*-algebra of observables A induces a topos T(A) in which the amalgamation of all of its commutative subalgebras comprises a single commutative C*-algebra. According to the constructive Gelfand duality theorem of Banaschewski and Mulvey, the latter has an internal spectrum S(A) in T(A), which in our approach plays …
