In this paper we put forward the definition of particular subsets on a unital C*-algebra, that we call isocones, and which reduce in the commutative case to the set of continuous non-decreasing functions with real values for a partial order relation defined on the spectrum of the algebra, which satisfies a compatibility condition with the topology (complete separateness). We prove that this space/algebra correspondence is a dual equivalence of categories, which is in fact only a mild generalization of the Gelfand-Naimark duality. Thus we can expect that general isocones could serve to define a notion of noncommutative ordered spaces. We also explore some basic algebraic constructions involving isocones, and classify those which are defined in M_2(C).
We study some topological spaces that can be considered as hyperspaces associated to noncommutative spaces. More precisely, for a NC compact space associated to a unital C*-algebra, we consider the set of closed projections of the second dual of the C*-algebra as the hyperspace of closed subsets of the NC space. We endow this hyperspace with an analog of Vietoris topology. In the case that the NC space has a quantum metric space structure in the sense of Rieffel we study the analogs of Hausdorff and infimum distances on the hyperspace. We also formulate some interesting problems about distance…
We review the theory of Toeplitz extensions and their role in operator K-theory, including Kasparov's bivariant K-theory. We then discuss the recent applications of Toeplitz algebras in the study of solid state systems, focusing in particular on the bulk-edge correspondence for topological insulators.
Jordan operator algebras are norm-closed spaces of operators on a Hilbert space with $a^2 \in A$ for all $a \in A$. We study noncommutative topology, noncommutative peak sets and peak interpolation, and hereditary subalgebras of Jordan operator algebras. We show that Jordan operator algebras present perhaps the most general setting for a `full' noncommutative topology in the C*-algebraic sense of Akemann, L. G. Brown, Pedersen, etc, and as modified for not necessarily selfadjoint algebras by the authors with Read, Hay and other coauthors. Our breakthrough relies in part on establishing several…
We associate to each unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ a geometric object---a diagram of topological spaces representing quotient spaces of the noncommutative space underlying $A$---meant to serve the role of a generalized Gel'fand spectrum. After showing that any functor $F$ from compact Hausdorff spaces to a suitable target category can be applied directly to these geometric objects to automatically yield an extension $\tilde{F}$ which acts on all unital $C^*$-algebras, we compare a novel formulation of the operator $K_0$ functor to the extension $\tilde K$ of the topological $K$-functor.
It is known that the T-dual of a circle bundle with H-flux (given by a Neveu-Schwarz 3-form) is the T-dual circle bundle with dual H-flux. However, it is also known that torus bundles with H-flux do not necessarily have a T-dual which is a torus bundle. A big puzzle has been to explain these mysterious "missing T-duals.'' Here we show that this problem is resolved using noncommutative topology. It turns out that every principal 2-torus-bundle with H-flux does indeed have a T-dual, but in the missing cases (which we characterize), the T-dual is non-classical and is a bundle of noncommutative to…
In this paper, we study the noncommutative Orlicz space $L_φ(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}},τ)$, which generalizes the concept of noncommutative $L^{p}$ space, where $\mathcal{M}$ is a von Neumann algebra, and $φ$ is an Orlicz function. As a modular space, the space $L_φ(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}},τ)$ possesses the Fatou property, and consequently, it is a Banach space. In addition, a new description of the subspace $E_φ(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}},τ)=\overline{\mathcal{M}\bigcap L_φ(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}},τ)}$ in $L_φ(\widetilde{\mathcal{M}},τ)$, which is closed under the norm topology and dense under the…
We use noncommutative topology to study T-duality for principal torus bundles with H-flux. We characterize precisely when there is a "classical" T-dual, i.e., a dual bundle with dual H-flux, and when the T-dual must be "non-classical," that is, a continuous field of noncommutative tori. The duality comes with an isomorphism of twisted $K$-theories, required for matching of D-brane charges, just as in the classical case. The isomorphism of twisted cohomology which one gets in the classical case is replaced in the non-classical case by an isomorphism of twisted cyclic homology. An important part…
This paper is an introduction to the hyperbolic geometry of noncommutative polyballs B_n of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. We use the theory of free pluriharmonic functions on polyballs and noncommutative Poisson kernels on tensor products of full Fock spaces to define hyperbolic type metrics on B_n, study their properties, and obtain hyperbolic versions of Schwarz-Pick lemma for free holomorphic functions on polyballs. As a consequence, the polyballs can be viewed as noncommutative hyperbolic spaces. When specialized to the operatorial polydisk D_k, our hyperbolic metric is compl…
This is a chapter in an incoming book on aperiodic order. We review results about the topology, the dynamics, and the combinatorics of aperiodically ordered tilings obtained with the tools of noncommutative geometry.
In this expository paper we describe the study of certain non-self-adjoint operator algebras, the Hardy algebras, and their representation theory. We view these algebras as algebras of (operator valued) functions on their spaces of representations. We will show that these spaces of representations can be parameterized as unit balls of certain $W^{*}$-correspondences and the functions can be viewed as Schur class operator functions on these balls. We will provide evidence to show that the elements in these (non commutative) Hardy algebras behave very much like bounded analytic functions and the…
We solve the lifting problem in C^*-algebras for many sets of relations that include the relations x_j^{N_j} = 0 on each variable. The remaining relations must be of the form \| p(x_1,...,x_n) \| \leq C for C a positive constant and p a noncommutative *-polynomial that is in some sense homogeneous. For example, we prove liftability for the set of relations x^3=0, y^4=0, z^5=0, xx^*+yy^*+zz^* \leq 1. Thus we find more noncommutative semialgebraic sets that have the topology of noncommutative absolute retracts.
In this paper we introduce a hyperbolic distance $δ$ on the noncommutative open ball $[B(H)^n]_1$, where $B(H)$ is the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H$, which is a noncommutative extension of the Poincare-Bergman metric on the open unit ball of $C^n$. We prove that $δ$ is invariant under the action of the group $Aut([B(H)^n]_1)$ of all free holomorphic automorphisms of $[B(\cH)^n]_1$, and show that the $δ$-topology and the usual operator norm topology coincide on $[B(H)^n]_1$. Moreover, we prove that $[B(H)^n]_1$ is a complete metric space with respect to the hype…
The book covers basics of noncommutative geometry and its applications in topology, algebraic geometry and number theory. A brief survey of main parts of noncommutative geometry with historical remarks, bibliography and a list of exercises is attached. Our notes are intended for the graduate students and faculty with interests in noncommutative geometry; they can be read by non-experts in the field.
We construct a topology on the class of pointed proper quantum metric spaces which generalizes the topology of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance on proper metric spaces, and the topology of the dual propinquity on Leibniz quantum compact metric spaces. A pointed proper quantum metric space is a special type of quantum locally compact metric space whose topography is proper, and with properties modeled on Leibniz quantum compact metric spaces, though they are usually not compact and include all the classical proper metric spaces. Our topology is obtained from an infra-metric which is our analogue o…
Gelfand - Naĭmark theorem supplies contravariant functor from a category of commutative $C^*-$ algebras to a category of locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Therefore any commutative $C^*-$ algebra is an alternative representation of a topological space. Similarly a category of (noncommutative) $C^*-$ algebras can be regarded as a category of generalized (noncommutative) locally compact Hausdorff spaces. Generalizations of topological invariants may be defined by algebraic methods. For example Serre Swan theorem states that complex topological $K$ - theory coincides with $K$ - theory of $C^*$ - …
Noncommutative geometry (NCG) is a branch of mathematics concerned with a geometric approach to noncommutative algebras, and with the construction of spaces that are locally presented by noncommutative algebras of functions (possibly in some generalized sense). A noncommutative algebra is an associative algebra in which the multiplication is not commutative, that is, for which $xy$ does not always equal $yx$; or more generally an algebraic structure in which one of the principal binary operations is not commutative; one also allows additional structures, e.g. topology or norm, to be possibly c…
We introduce a noncommutative analogue of the Figá-Talamanca-Herz algebra $A_p(G)$ on the natural predual of the operator space $\frak{M}_{p,cb}$ of completely bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space $S_p$. We determine the isometric Schur multipliers and prove that the space $\frak{M}_{p}$ of bounded Schur multipliers on Schatten space $S_p$ is the closure in the weak operator topology of the span of isometric multipliers.
A noncommutative solenoid is the C*-algebra $C^\ast(\Q_N^2,σ)$ where $\Q_N$ is the group of the $N$-adic rationals twisted and $σ$ is a multiplier of $\Q_N^2$. In this paper, we use techniques from noncommutative topology to classify these C*-algebras up to *-isomorphism in terms of the multipliers of $\Q_N^2$. We also establish a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicity of noncommutative solenoids, compute their K-theory and show that the $K_0$ groups of noncommutative solenoids are given by the extensions of $\Z$ by $\Q_N$. We give a concrete description of non-simple noncommutative…
Examples of noncommutative self-coverings are described, and spectral triples on the base space are extended to spectral triples on the inductive family of coverings, in such a way that the covering projections are locally isometric. Such triples are shown to converge, in a suitable sense, to a semifinite spectral triple on the direct limit of the tower of coverings, which we call noncommutative solenoidal space. Some of the self-coverings described here are given by the inclusion of the fixed point algebra in a C$^*$-algebra acted upon by a finite abelian group. In all the examples treated he…
Quantum groups and quantum homogeneous spaces - developed by several authors since the 80's - provide a large class of examples of algebras which for many reasons we interpret as `coordinate algebras' over noncommutative spaces. This dissertation is an attempt to understand them from the point of view of Connes' noncommutative geometry.
We present a generalization of bilateral weighted shift operators for the noncommutative multivariable setting. We discover a notion of periodicity for these shifts, which has an appealing diagramatic interpretation in terms of an infinite tree structure associated with the underlying Hilbert space. These shifts arise naturally through weighted versions of certain representations of the Cuntz C$^*$-algebras $O_n$. It is convenient, and equivalent, to consider the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by these operators when investigating their joint reducing subspace structure. We p…
The integral in noncommutative geometry (NCG) involves a non-standard trace called a Dixmier trace. The geometric origins of this integral are well known. From a measure-theoretic view, however, the formulation contains several difficulties. We review results concerning the technical features of the integral in NCG and some outstanding problems in this area. The review is aimed for the general user of NCG.
Let p be prime. A noncommutative p-solenoid is the C*-algebra of Z[1/p] x Z[1/p] twisted by a multiplier of that group, where Z[1/p] is the additive subgroup of the field Q of rational numbers whose denominators are powers of p. In this paper, we survey our classification of these C*-algebras up to *-isomorphism in terms of the multipliers on Z[1/p], using techniques from noncommutative topology. Our work relies in part on writing these C*-algebras as direct limits of rotation algebras, i.e. twisted group C*-algebras of the group Z^2 thereby providing a mean for computing the K-theory of the n…
We discuss the relation between the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between probability distributions on a metric space, arising in the study of Monge-Kantorovich transport problem, and the spectral distance of noncommutative geometry. Starting from a remark of Rieffel on compact manifolds, we first show that on any - i.e. non-necessary compact - complete Riemannian spin manifolds, the two distances coincide. Then, on convex manifolds in the sense of Nash embedding, we provide some natural upper and lower bounds to the distance between any two probability distributions. Specializing to the Euc…
In this paper, we study free holomorphic functions on regular polyballs and provide analogues of several classical results from complex analysis such as: Abel theorem, Hadamard formula, Cauchy inequality, Schwarz lemma, and maximum principle. These results are used together with a class of noncommutative Berezin transforms to obtain a complete description of the group Aut(B_n) of all free holomorphic automorphisms of the polyball. The abstract polyball B_n has a universal model S consisting of left creation operators acting on tensor products of full Fock spaces. We determine: the group of aut…
We provide generalizations of Burkholder's inequalities involving conditioned square functions of martingales to the general context of martingales in noncommutative symmetric spaces. More precisely, we prove that Burkholder's inequalities are valid for any martingale in noncommutative space constructed from a symmetric space defined on the interval $(0,\infty)$ with Fatou property and whose Boyd indices are strictly between 1 and 2. This answers positively a question raised by Jiao and may be viewed as a conditioned version of similar inequalities for square functions of noncommutative martin…
Let $G$ be a finite group. Noncommutative geometry of unital $G$-algebras is studied. A geometric structure is determined by a spectral triple on the crossed product algebra associated with the group action. This structure is to be viewed as a representative of a noncommutative orbifold. Based on a study of classical orbifold groupoids, a Morita equivalence for the crossed product spectral triples is developed. Noncommutative orbifolds are Morita equivalence classes of the crossed product spectral triples. As a special case of this Morita theory one can study freeness of the $G$-action on the …
We establish several deep existence criteria for conditional expectations on von Neumann algebras, and then apply this theory to develop a noncommutative theory of representing measures of characters of a function algebra. Our main cycle of results describes what may be understood as a `noncommutative Hoffman-Rossi theorem' giving the existence of weak* continuous `noncommutative representing measures' for so-called D-characters. These results may also be viewed as `module' Hahn-Banach extension theorems for weak* continuous `characters' into possibly noninjective von Neumann algebras. In clos…
We give new examples of noncommutative manifolds that are less standard than the NC-torus or Moyal deformations of $\Rb^n$. They arise naturally from basic considerations of noncommutative differential topology and have non-trivial global features. The new examples include the instanton algebra and the NC-4-spheres $S^4_θ$. The noncommutative algebras $\Ac=C^{\ify} (S^{4}_θ)$ of functions on NC-spheres are solutions to the vanishing, $ {\rm ch}_j (e) = 0, j < 2 $, of the Chern character in the cyclic homology of $\Ac$ of an idempotent $e \in M_4 (\Ac), e^2 = e, e = e^*$. The universal noncommu…
We study the noncommutative modular curve (which was already studied by Connes, Manin and Marcolli), and the space of geodesics on the usual modular curve, from the viewpoint of algebraic groups, linear algebra and class field theory. This allows us, first, to understand differently some aspects of Manin's real multiplication program, and secondly, to study higher dimensional analogs of the noncommutative modular curve, called irrational or noncommutative boundaries of Shimura varieties. These are double cosets spaces $L\backslash G(\mathbb{R})/P(K)$ where $G$ is a connected reductive algebrai…
We study quantum Dirichlet forms and the associated symmetric quantum Markov semigroups on noncommutative $L^2$ spaces. It is known from the work of Cipriani and Sauvageot that these semigroups induce a first order differential calculus, and we use this differential calculus to define a noncommutative transport metric on the set of density matrices. This construction generalizes both the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance on a large class of metric spaces as well as the discrete transport distance introduced by Maas, Mielke, and Chow-Huang-Li-Zhou. Assuming a Bakry-Émery-type gradient estimate, we sho…
After investigating by examples the unusual and striking elementary properties of the Penrose tilings and the Arnold cat map, we associate a finite symbolic dynamics with finite grammar rules to each of them. Instead of studying these Markovian systems with the help of set-topology, which would give only pathological results, a noncommutative approximately finite C*-algebra is associated to both systems. By calculating the K-groups of these algebras it is demonstrated that this noncommutative point of view gives a much more appropriate description of the phase space structure of these systems …
