Neutron stars (NSs) in scalar-tensor (ST) theories of gravitation can acquire scalar charges and generate distinct spacetimes from those in General Relativity (GR) through the celebrated phenomenon of spontaneous scalarization. Taking on an ST theory with the mass term of the scalar field, we determine the theory parameter space for spontaneous scalarization by investigating the linearized scalar field equation. Then the full numerical solutions for slowly rotating NSs are obtained and studied in great detail. The resulted spacetime is used to calculate test-particle geodesics. The lightlike geodesics are used to construct the profile of X-ray radiation from a pair of hot spots on the surface of scalarized NSs, which potentially can be compared with the data from the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission for testing the ST theory.
One avenue for testing the no-hair theorem is obtained through timing a pulsar orbiting close to a black hole and fitting for quadrupolar effects on the time-of-arrival of pulses. If deviations from the Kerr quadrupole are measured, then the no-hair theorem is invalidated. To this end, we derive an expression for the light travel time delay for a pulsar orbiting in a black-hole spacetime described by the Butterworth-Ipser metric, which has an arbitrary spin and quadrupole moment. We consider terms up to the quadrupole order in the black-hole metric and derive the time-delay expression in a clo…
Pulsars around the Massive Black Hole (MBH) in the Galactic Center (GC) are expected to be revealed by the incoming facilities (e.g., the Square Kilometre Array). Under a full relativistic framework with the pulsar approximated as a test particle, we investigate the constraints on the spinning of the MBH by monitoring the timing of surrounding pulsars. For GC pulsars orbiting closely around the MBH (e.g., $\lesssim1000$AU), we find that full relativistic treatment in modeling accurately their timing signals can be necessary, as the relativistic signals are orders of magnitude larger than the t…
With a spin frequency of 707 Hz, PSR J0952-0607 is the second fastest spinning pulsar known. It was discovered in radio by LOFAR in 2017 at an estimated distance of either 0.97 or 1.74 kpc and has a low-mass companion with a 6.42 hr orbital period. We report discovery of the X-ray counterpart of PSR J0952-0607 using XMM-Newton. The X-ray spectra can be well-fit by a single power law model (Gamma = 2.5) or by a thermal plus power law model (kTeff = 40 eV and Gamma = 1.4). We do not detect evidence of variability, such as that due to orbital modulation from pulsar wind and companion star interac…
By extending our recent framework to describe the tidal deformations of a spinning compact object, we compute for the first time the tidal Love numbers of a spinning neutron star to linear order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic distortions and new classes of spin-induced ("rotational") tidal Love numbers emerge. We focus on stationary tidal fields, which induce axisymmetric perturbations. We present the perturbation equations for both electric-led and magnetic-led rotational Love numbers for generic multipoles and explicitly sol…
We present the extension of our \cocal~- Compact Object CALculator - code to compute general-relativistic initial data for binary compact-star systems. In particular, we construct quasiequilibrium initial data for equal-mass binaries with spins that are either aligned or antialigned with the orbital angular momentum. The Isenberg-Wilson-Mathews formalism is adopted and the constraint equations are solved using the representation formula with a suitable choice of a Green's function. We validate the new code with solutions for equal-mass binaries and explore its capabilities for a wide range of …

We study r-mode instability of rotating compact objects composed of asymmetric and self-interacting Fermionic dark matter (dark stars). It is argued that the instability limit the angular frequency of the stars less than half of the Keplerian frequency. This may constrain the stars as alternatives to fast spinning pulsars or rapidly rotating Kerr black holes.
Cosmic strings, as remnants of the symmetry breaking phase in the Early Universe, may be susceptible to non-local physics. Here we show that the presence of a Poincaré-invariant non-locality -- parametrized by a factor $\exp(-\Box\ell^2)$ -- regularizes the gravitational field and thereby changes the properties of spacetime: it is now simply connected and the angle deficit around the cosmic string becomes a function of the radial distance. Similar changes occur for the non-local gravitomagnetic field of a rotating cosmic string, and we translate these mathematical facts into the language of no…
Introducing a surface layer of matter on the edge of a neutron star in slow rigid rotation, we analyze, from an intrinsic point of view, the junction conditions that must be satisfied between the interior and exterior solutions of the Einstein equations. In our model the core-\textit{crust} transition pressure arise as an essential parameter in the description of a configuration. As an application of this formalism, we describe giant \textit{glitches} of the Vela pulsar as a result of variations in the transition pressure, finding that these small changes are compatible with the expected tempe…
In anticipation of a LIGO detection of a black hole/neutron star merger, we expand on the intriguing possibility of an electromagnetic counterpart. Black hole/Neutron star mergers could be disappointingly dark since most black holes will be large enough to swallow a neutron star whole, without tidal disruption and without the subsequent fireworks. Encouragingly, we previously found a promising source of luminosity since the black hole and the highly-magnetized neutron star establish an electronic circuit -- a black hole battery. In this paper, arguing against common lore, we consider the elect…
Stellar mass black holes (SMBHs), forming by the core collapse of very massive, rapidly rotating stars, are expected to exhibit a high density accretion disk around them developed from the spinning mantle of the collapsing star. A wide class of such disks, due to their high density and temperature, are effective emitters of neutrinos and hence called neutrino cooled disks. Tracking the physics relating the observed (neutrino) luminosity to the mass, spin of black holes (BHs) and the accretion rate (M_dot) of such disks, here we establish a correlation between the spin and mass of SMBHs at thei…
Some models (such as the Skyrme model, a low-energy effective field theory for QCD) suggest that the high-density matter prevailing in neutron star interiors may be significantly anisotropic. Anisotropy is known to affect the bulk properties of nonrotating neutron stars in General Relativity. In this paper we study the effects of anisotropy on slowly rotating stars in General Relativity. We also consider one of the most popular extensions of Einstein's theory, namely scalar-tensor theories allowing for spontaneous scalarization (a phase transition similar to spontaneous magnetization in ferrom…
We investigate the possibility of testing short distance modifications to General Relativity via higher curvature terms in the fundamental gravity Lagrangian by analysing their impact on observations of spinning astronomical binary systems. By using effective field theory methods applied to the 2-body problem, generic lower bounds on the short-distance scale accompanying high curvature terms can be set. In particular we extend known results by deriving spin-dependent effects in binding energy, radiation emission process, and spin precession equations in binary systems, which are the fundamenta…
The recent fast growth of a population of millisecond pulsars with precisely measured mass provides an excellent opportunity to characterize these compact stars at an unprecedented level. This is because the stellar parameter values can be accurately computed for known mass and spin rate and an assumed equation of state (EoS) model. For each of the 16 such pulsars and for a set of EoS models from nucleonic, hyperonic, strange quark matter and hybrid classes, we numerically compute fast spinning stable stellar parameter values considering the full effect of general relativity. This first detail…
It is usually thought that a single equation of state (EoS) model "correctly" represents cores of all compact stars. Here we emphasize that two families of compact stars, viz., neutron stars and strange stars, can coexist in nature, and that neutron stars can get converted to strange stars through the nucleation process of quark matter in the stellar center. From our fully general relativistic numerical computations of the structures of fast-spinning compact stars, known as millisecond pulsars, we find that such a stellar conversion causes a simultaneous spin-up and decrease in gravitational m…
Nonminimally coupled free scalar fields may be unstable in the spacetime of compact objects. Such instability can be triggered by classical seeds or, more simply, by quantum fluctuations giving rise to the so-called {\em vacuum awakening effect}. Here, we investigate how the parameter space which characterizes the instability is affected when the object gains some rotation. For this purpose, we focus on the stability analysis of nonminimally coupled scalar fields in the spacetime of slowly spinning matter shells.
A theoretical study of some electrodynamic features of a region close to a {\it slowly-rotating} magnetized relativistic star is performed. To be a little more specific, based on the solution-generating method given by Wald, the magnetic fields around both uncharged and (slightly) charged relativistic stars have been obtained. Particularly for a charged relativistic star, again following the argument by Wald, the star was shown to gradually accrete charge until it reached an equilibrium value $\tilde{Q}=2B_{0}J$. This value of the equilibrium charge seems to be generic as a rotating black hole…
We have recently proposed an explanation for the birth velocities of pulsars as resulting from asymmetries due to neutrino oscillations in the cooling protoneutron star. A specific prediction of this mechanism is that the correlation of velocities and magnetic fields should be stronger for slowly rotating neutron stars and weaker for those whose periods are less than 1 s. A remarkable agreement of this prediction with the data favors the oscillation mechanism over the alternative explanations for the proper motion of pulsars.
The effect of gravitational radiation reaction on circular orbits around a spinning (Kerr) black hole is computed to leading order in $S$ (the magnitude of the spin angular momentum of the hole) and in the strength of gravity $M/r$ (where $M$ is the mass of the black hole, $r$ is the orbital radius, and $G=c=1$). The radiation reaction makes the orbit shrink but leaves it circular, and drives the orbital plane very slowly toward antialignment with the spin of the hole: $\tan (ι/2) = \tan (ι_0 /2) [1+(61/72)(S/M^2) (M/r)^{3/2}]$, where $ι$ is the angle between the normal to the orbital plane an…

The orbital dynamics of fast spinning neutron stars encountering a massive Black Hole (BH) with unbounded orbits are investigated using the quadratic-in-spin Mathisson-Papapetrou- Dixon (MPD) formulation. We consider the motion of the spinning neutron stars with astrophysically relevant speed in the gravity field of the BH. For such slow-speed scattering, the hyperbolic orbits followed by these neutron stars all have near the e = 1 eccentricity, and have distinct properties compared with those of e >> 1. We have found that compared with geodesic motion, the spin-orbit and spin-spin coupling wi…
For a set of equation of state (EoS) models involving interacting strange quark matter, characterized by an effective bag constant (B_eff) and a perturbative QCD corrections term (a_4), we construct fully general relativistic equilibrium sequences of rapidly spinning strange stars for the first time. Computation of such sequences is important to study millisecond pulsars and other fast spinning compact stars. Our EoS models can support a gravitational mass (M_G) and a spin frequency at least up to approximately 3.0 solar mass and approximately 1250 Hz respectively, and hence are fully consiste…
Adopting our new method for matching general relativistic, ideal magnetohydrodynamics to its force-free limit, we perform the first systematic simulations of force-free pulsar magnetospheres in general relativity. We endow the neutron star with a general relativistic dipole magnetic field, model the interior with ideal magnetohydrodynamics, and adopt force-free electrodynamics in the exterior. Comparing the spin-down luminosity to its corresponding Minkowski value, we find that general relativistic effects give rise to a modest enhancement: the maximum enhancement for $n=1$ polytropes is $\sim…
Using a highly accurate numerical code, we study the spin down of rotating relativistic stars, undergoing a quark deconfinement phase transition. Such phase transitions have been suggested to yield an observable signal in the braking index of spinning-down pulsars, which is based on a ``backbending'' behaviour of the moment of inertia. We focus on a particular equation of state that has been used before to study this behaviour, and find that for the population of normal pulsars the moment of inertia does not exhibit a backbending behaviour. In contrast, for supramassive millisecond pulsars a v…
Neutron stars undergoing r-mode oscillation emit gravitational radiation that might be detected on earth. For known millisecond pulsars the observed spindown rate imposes an upper limit on the possible gravitational wave signal of these sources. Taking into account the physics of r-mode evolution, we show that only sources spinning at frequencies above a few hundred Hertz can be unstable to r-modes, and we derive a more stringent universal r-mode spindown limit on their gravitational wave signal, exploiting the fact that the r-mode saturation amplitude is insensitive to the structural properti…
We utilize the bulk viscosity of interacting strange quark matter to reevaluate the damping time scale. The presence of medium effect of bulk viscosity leads to a stronger damping of r-modes, which can be over an order of magnitude for realistic parameters. We find that the r-mode instability window is narrowed due to the medium effect, and hence when a pulsar reaches the instability window it will only slow down by gravitational wave emission to a period of 1.78msec instead of 2.5msec given by early estimate. As a theoretical upper rotation limit of pulsars, the period of 1.78msec is very clo…
The spin of a black hole is an important quantity to study, providing a window into the processes by which a black hole was born and grew. Further, spin can be a potent energy source for powering relativistic jets and energetic particle acceleration. In this review, I describe the techniques currently used to detect and measure the spins of black holes. It is shown that: (1) Two well understood techniques, X-ray reflection spectroscopy and thermal continuum fitting, can be used to measure the spins of black holes that are accreting at moderate rates. There is a rich set of other electromagneti…
We propose that the \textit{post-glitch} epoch in a Vela-type pulsar corresponds to a transition time in which the broken \textit{crust} is readjusting its temperature and core-\textit{crust} transition pressure after the changes produced by the \textit{glitch}. To describe the evolution of the pulsar in this epoch we use a sequence of stationary and axisymmetric relativistic models of slowly rotating neutron stars with a surface layer \textit{crust}. Previously, we have formulated the matching conditions on the surface of the star in terms of physical properties (total mass of the star, core-…
We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric fi…
The Lense--Thirring spacetime describes a 4-dimensional slowly rotating approximate solution of vacuum Einstein equations valid to a linear order in rotation parameter. It is fully characterized by a single metric function of the corresponding static (Schwarzschild) solution. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the Lense--Thirring spacetimes to the higher-dimensional multiply-spinning case, with an ansatz that is not necessarily fully characterized by a single (static) metric function. This generalization lets us study slowly rotating spacetimes in various higher curvature gravitie…
Propagation of light in the gravitational field of self-gravitating spinning bodies moving with arbitrary velocities is discussed. The gravitational field is assumed to be "weak" everywhere. Equations of motion of a light ray are solved in the first post-Minkowskian approximation that is linear with respect to the universal gravitational constant $G$. We do not restrict ourselves with the approximation of gravitational lens so that the solution of light geodesics is applicable for arbitrary locations of source of light and observer. This formalism is applied for studying corrections to the Sha…
We present a case study for the relevance of the r-mode instability for accreting compact stars. Our estimates are based on approximations that facilitate back-of-the-envelope calculations. We discuss two different cases: 1) For recycled millisecond pulsars we argue that the r-mode instability may be active at rotation periods longer than the Kepler period (which provides the dynamical limit on rotation) as long as the core temperature is larger than about $2\times10^5$ K. Our estimates suggest that the instability may have played a role in the evolution of the fastest spinning pulsars, and th…
The deformability of a compact object induced by a perturbing tidal field is encoded in the tidal Love numbers, which depend sensibly on the object's internal structure. These numbers are known only for static, spherically-symmetric objects. As a first step to compute the tidal Love numbers of a spinning compact star, here we extend powerful perturbative techniques to compute the exterior geometry of a spinning object distorted by an axisymmetric tidal field to second order in the angular momentum. The spin of the object introduces couplings between electric and magnetic deformations and new c…
We develop a new perturbation method for determining a class of time transfer functions in a stationary spacetime when its metric is a small deformation of a background metric for which the time transfer functions are known in a closed form. The perturbation terms are expressed as line integrals along the null geodesic paths of the background metric. Unlike what happens with the other procedures proposed until now, the time transfer functions obtained in this way are completely free of unbounded terms and do not generate any enhancement in the light travel time. Our procedure proves to be very…
