We consider the natural problem of counting isotopy classes of essential surfaces in 3-manifolds, focusing on closed essential surfaces in a broad class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Our main result is that the count of (possibly disconnected) essential surfaces in terms of their Euler characteristic always has a short generating function and hence has quasi-polynomial behavior. This gives remarkably concise formulae for the number of such surfaces, as well as detailed asymptotics. We give algorithms that allow us to compute these generating functions and the underlying surfaces, and apply these to almost 60,000 manifolds, providing a wealth of data about them. We use this data to explore the delicate question of counting only connected essential surfaces and propose some conjectures. Our methods involve normal and almost normal surfaces, especially the work of Tollefson and Oertel, combined with techniques pioneered by Ehrhart for counting lattice points in polyhedra with rational vertices. We also introduce a new way of testing if a normal surface in an ideal triangulation is essential that avoids cutting the manifold open along the surface; rather, we use almost normal surfaces in the original triangulation.
We prove a lower bound on the number of maximally broken trajectories of the negative gradient flow of a Morse-Smale function on a closed aspherical manifold in terms of integral (torsion) homology.
Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro proved existence of finite volume non-arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds of any given dimension. In dimension four and higher, we show that there are about v^v such manifolds of volume at most v, considered up to commensurability. Since the number of arithmetic ones tends to be polynomial, almost all hyperbolic manifolds are non-arithmetic in an appropriate sense. Our method involves a geometric graph-of-spaces construction that relies on arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.
We prove that the cardinality of the torsion subgroups in homology of a closed hyperbolic manifold of any dimension can be bounded by a doubly exponential function of its diameter. It would follow from a conjecture by Bergeron and Venkatesh that the order of growth in our bound is sharp. We also determine how the number of non-commensurable closed hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 3 and bounded diameter grows. The lower bound implies that the fraction of arithmetic manifolds tends to zero as the diameter goes up.
We count the number of conjugacy classes of maximal, genus g, surface subroups in hyperbolic 3-manifold groups. For any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold, we show that there is an upper bound on this number which grows factorially with g. We also give a class of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds for which there is a lower bound of the same type.
We introduced an asymptotic quantity that counts area-minimizing surfaces in negatively curved closed 3-manifolds and show that quantity to only be minimized, among all metrics of sectional curvature less than or equal -1, by the hyperbolic metric.
These introductory lectures show how to define finite type invariants of links and 3-manifolds by counting graph configurations in 3-manifolds, following ideas of Witten and Kontsevich. The linking number is the simplest finite type invariant for 2-component links. It is defined in many equivalent ways in the first section. As an important example, we present it as the algebraic intersection of a torus and a 4-chain called a propagator in a configuration space. In the second section, we introduce the simplest finite type 3-manifold invariant, which is the Casson invariant (or the Theta-invaria…
For closed odd-dimensional manifolds with sectional curvature less or equal than -1, we define the minimal surface entropy that counts the number of surface subgroups. It attains the minimum if and only if the metric is hyperbolic. Moreover, we compute the entropy associated with other locally symmetric spaces and cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
In this paper we study the equidistribution of expanding horospheres in infinite volume geometrically finite rank one locally symmetric manifolds and apply it to the orbital counting problem in apollonian sphere packing.
We show that the number of isometry classes of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that bound geometrically grows at least super-exponentially with their volume, both in the arithmetic and non-arithmetic settings.
It is well known that every quasi-Fuchsian manifold admits at least one closed incompressible minimal surface, and at most finitely many of them. In this paper, for any prescribed integer $N>0$, we construct a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains at least $2^N$ such minimal surfaces. As a consequence, there exists some simple close Jordan curve on $S^2_\infty$ such that there are at least $2^N$ disk-type complete minimal surface in $\mathbb{H}^3$ sharing this Jordan curve as the asymptotic boundary.
Under mild assumptions on a group G, we prove that the class of complete Riemannian n-manifolds of uniformly bounded negative sectional curvatures and with the fundamental groups isomorphic to G breaks into finitely many tangential homotopy types. It follows that many aspherical manifolds do not admit complete negatively curved metrics with prescribed curvature bounds.
We count the number of isotopy classes of closed, connected, orientable, essential surfaces embedded in the exterior B of the knot K13n586.The main result is that the count of surfaces by genus is equal to the Euler totent function. This is the first manifold for which we know the number of surfaces for any genus. The main argument is to show when normal surfaces in B are connected by counting their number of components. We implement tools from Agol, Hass and Thurston to convert the problem of counting components of surfaces into counting the number of orbits in a set of integers under a colle…
We address the problem of counting periodic orbits of vector fields on smooth closed manifolds. The space of non-constant periodic orbits is enlarged to a complete space by adding the ghost orbits, which are decorations of the zeros of vector fields. Associated with any compact and open subset $Γ$ of the moduli space of periodic and ghost orbits, we define an integer weight. When the vector field moves along a path, and $Γ$ deforms in a compact and open family, we show that the weight function stays constant. We also give a number of examples and computations, which illustrate the applications…
We apply Lescop's construction of $\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant perturbative invariant of knots and 3-manifolds to the explicit equivariant propagator of "AL-paths" given in arXiv:1403.8030. We obtain an invariant $\hat{Z}_n$ of certain equivalence classes of fiberwise Morse functions on a 3-manifold fibered over $S^1$, which can be considered as a higher loop analogue of the Lefschetz zeta function and whose construction will be applied to that of finite type invariants of knots in such a 3-manifold. We also give a combinatorial formula for Lescop's equivariant invariant $\mathscr{Q}$ for 3-manifo…
We define essential and strongly essential triangulations of 3-manifolds, and give four constructions using different tools (Heegaard splittings, hierarchies of Haken 3-manifolds, Epstein-Penner decompositions, and cut loci of Riemannian manifolds) to obtain triangulations with these properties under various hypotheses on the topology or geometry of the manifold. We also show that a semi-angle structure is a sufficient condition for a triangulation of a 3-manifold to be essential, and a strict angle structure is a sufficient condition for a triangulation to be strongly essential. Moreover, alg…
We use sutured manifold theory, essential laminations and essential branched surfaces to establish the upper bounds of distances between certain types of nonsimple Dehn surgery slopes. This is the revised version of an earlier preprint {\it Dehn surgery and simple manifolds.}
We construct a counterexamples in dimensions $n>3$ to Gromov's conjecture \cite{Gr1} that the macroscopic dimension of rationally essential $n$-dimensional manifolds equals $n$.
The existence of essential closed surfaces surfaces is proven for finite coverings of 3-manifolds that are triangulated by finitely many topological ideal tetrahedra and admit a regular, negatively curved, ideal structure.
If M is a manifold with compressible boundary, we analyze essential disks in M, as well as incompressible, but not necessarily boundary incompressible, surfaces in M. We are most interested in the case where M is a handlebody or compression body. The analysis depends on a new normal surface theory. We hope the normal surface theory will be used in other papers to describe objects representing limits of essential disks in a handlebody or a 3-manifold with compressible boundary. For certain automorphisms of handlebodies, these disk limits should serve as invariant objects akin to laminations and…
The purpose of this article is to produce effective versions of some rigidity results in algebra and geometry. On the geometric side, we focus on the spectrum of primitive geodesic lengths (resp., complex lengths) for arithmetic hyperbolic 2-manifolds (resp., 3-manifolds). By work of Reid, this spectrum determines the commensurability class of the 2-manifold (resp., 3-manifold). We establish effective versions of these rigidity results by ensuring that, for two incommensurable arithmetic manifolds of bounded volume, the length sets (resp., the complex length sets) must disagree for a length th…

We study finite type invariants of nullhomologous knots in a closed 3-manifold $M$ defined in terms of certain descending filtration $\{\mathscr{K}_n(M)\}_{n\geq 0}$ of the vector space $\mathscr{K}(M)$ spanned by isotopy classes of nullhomologous knots in $M$. The filtration $\{\mathscr{K}_n(M)\}_{n \geq 0}$ is defined by surgeries on special kinds of claspers in $M$ having one special leaf. More precisely, when $M$ is fibered over $S^1$ and $H_1(M)=\mathbb{Z}$, we study how far the natural surgery map from the space of $\mathbb{Q}[t^{\pm 1}]$-colored Jacobi diagrams on $S^1$ of degree $n$ to…
Closed essential surfaces in a three-manifold can be detected by ideal points of the character variety or by algebraic non-integral representations. We give examples of closed essential surfaces not detected in either of these ways. For ideal points, we use Chesebro's module-theoretic interpretation of Culler-Shalen theory. As a corollary, we construct an infinite family of closed hyperbolic Haken 3-manifolds with no algebraic non-integral representations into PSL(2, C), resolving a question of Shanuel and Zhang.
It is a longstanding problem to determine the precise relationship between the geodesic length spectrum of a hyperbolic manifold and its commensurability class. A well known result of Reid, for instance, shows that the geodesic length spectrum of an arithmetic hyperbolic surface determines the surface's commensurability class. It is known, however, that non-commensurable arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces may share arbitrarily large portions of their length spectra. In this paper we investigate this phenomenon and prove a number of quantitative results about the maximum cardinality of a family of …
Let $T$ be a graph in a compact, orientable 3--manifold $M$ and let $Γ$ be a subgraph. $T$ can be placed in bridge position with respect to a Heegaard surface $H$. We show that if $H$ is what we call $(T,Γ)$-c-weakly reducible in the complement of $T$ then either a "degenerate" situation occurs or $H$ can be untelescoped and consolidated into a collection of "thick surfaces" and "thin surfaces". The thin surfaces are c-essential (c-incompressible and essential) in the graph exterior and each thick surface is a strongly irreducible bridge surface in the complement of the thin surfaces. This str…
In this paper we study exceptional Dehn fillings on hyperbolic knot manifolds which contain an essential once-punctured torus. Let $M$ be such a knot manifold and let $β$ be the boundary slope of such an essential once-punctured torus. We prove that if Dehn filling $M$ with slope $α$ produces a Seifert fibred manifold, then $Δ(α,β)\leq 5$. Furthermore we classify the triples $(M; α,β)$ when $\D(α,β)\geq 4$. More precisely, when $\D(α,β)=5$, then $M$ is the (unique) manifold $Wh(-3/2)$ obtained by Dehn filling one boundary component of the Whitehead link exterior with slope -3/2, and $(α, β)$ i…
Let $M$ be a simple 3-manifold with a toral boundary component. It is known that if two Dehn fillings on $M$ along the boundary produce a reducible manifold and a toroidal manifold, then the distance between the filling slopes is at most three. This paper gives a remarkably short proof of this result.
We show that if a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with a single torus boundary admits two Dehn fillings at distance 5, each of which contains an essential torus, then $M$ is a rational homology solid torus, which is not large in the sense of Wu. Moreover, one of the surgered manifold contains an essential torus which meets the core of the attached solid torus minimally in at most two points. This completes the determination of best possible upper bounds for the distance between two exceptional Dehn fillings yielding essential small surfaces in all ten cases for large hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
It has been 35 years since Stanley proved that f-vectors of boundaries of simplicial polytopes satisfy McMullen's conjectured g-conditions. Since then one of the outstanding questions in the realm of face enumeration is whether or not Stanley's proof could be extended to larger classes of spheres. Here we hope to give an overview of various attempts to accomplish this and why we feel this is so important. In particular, we will see a strong connection to f-vectors of manifolds and pseudomanifolds. Along the way we have included several previously unpublished results involving how the g-conject…
We present recent results on counting and distribution of circles in a given circle packing invariant under a geometrically finite Kleinian group and discuss how the dynamics of flows on geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$ manifolds are related. Our results apply to Apollonian circle packings, Sierpinski curves, Schottky dances, etc.
A formula is given for the Seiberg-Witten invariants of a 4-manifold that is cut along certain kinds of 3-dimensional tori. The formula involves a Seiberg-Witten invariant for each of the resulting pieces.
