We propose a method for searching dark matter axion in axion-photon conversion. We consider a superconductor of cylindrical shape under strong magnetic field. The dark matter axion generates oscillating electric field which induces oscillating superconducting current in the surface of the superconductor. The current gives rise to dipole radiation with the frequency $m_a/2π$ given by axion mass $m_a$. We show that the radiation flux generated by the current is of the order of $10^{-18}$W under magnetic field $\sim 3$T in the case of radius $\sim 1$cm and length $\sim 10$cm of the cylindrical superconductor. %The superconducting current flows in the surface to the depth $λ\simeq 5\times 10^{-6}$cm. The large amount of the radiation flux arises because Cooper pairs with large number density ( $\sim 10^{22}/\rm cm^{3}$ ) is present in the superconductor. With the high detection sensitivity, we can simultaneously search wide bandwidth of the radio frequency with existing radio telescope.
The ultralight axion with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV is known as a candidate of dark matter. A peculiar feature of the ultralight axion is oscillating pressure in time, which produces oscillation of gravitational potentials. Since the solar system moves through the dark matter halo at the velocity of about $v \sim 300 \, \text{km} / \text{s} = 10^{-3}$, there exists axion wind, which looks like scalar gravitational waves for us. Hence, there is a chance to detect ultralight axion dark matter with a wide mass range by using laser interferometer detectors. We calculate the detector signal induced…
We study the direct radiation excited by oscillating axion (or axion-like particle) dark matter in a homogenous magnetic field and its detection scheme. We concretely derive the analytical expression of the axion-induced radiated power for a cylindrical uniform magnetic field. In the long wave limit, the radiation power is proportional to the square of the B-field volume and the axion mass $m_a$, whereas it oscillate as approaching the short wave limit and the peak powers are proportional to the side area of the cylindrical magnetic field and $m_a^{-2}$. The maximum power locates at mass $m_a\…
We investigate the prospects for detecting axion-like particles (ALPs, dubbed as "a") via the decay $Z\rightarrow a f\bar{f}$ at future $Z$ factories. Considering the decay channels $a\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ and $a\rightarrow b \bar{b}$ , four types of signals $μ^+ μ^- /E$, $b b /E$, $e^+ e^- μ^+ μ^-$ and $e^+ e^- b b$ are explored. We demonstrate that these channels are promising for detecting ALPs at $Z$ factories and obtain the sensitivity bounds on the couplings $g_{aZZ}$ and $g_{aγZ}$.
Non-relativistic QCD axions or axion-like particles are among the most popular candidates for cold Dark Matter (DM) in the universe. We proposed to detect axion-like DM, using linearly polarized pulsar light as a probe. Because of birefringence effect potentially caused by an oscillating galactic axion DM background, when pulsar light travels across the galaxy, its linear polarization angle may vary with time. With a soliton+NFW galactic DM density profile, we show that this strategy can potentially probe an axion-photon coupling as small as $\sim 10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for axion mass $m_a \sim …
It has been suggested that radio telescopes may be sensitive to axion dark matter that resonantly converts to radio photons in the magnetospheres surrounding neutron stars (NSs). In this work, we closely examine this possibility by calculating the radiated power from and projected sensitivity to axion dark matter conversion in ensembles of NSs within astrophysical systems like galaxies and globular clusters. We use population synthesis and evolution models to describe the spatial distributions of NSs within these systems and the distributions of NS properties. Focusing on three specific target…
Axions and axion like particles in general are consequences of the extensions of the standard model in particle physics. Axions have been proposed as hypothetical pseudo-scalar particles in particle physics to solve the strong Charge-Parity problem using quantum chromodynamics. These particles are also proposed to be an attractive candidate for cold dark matter in the Universe. The current understanding of the existence and properties of the axions is not very clear and these hypothetical particles remain elusive. However many theoretical and experimental searches are being made for understand…
We have shown a new production mechanism of radiations produced by dark matter axion $a(t)$ under strong magnetic field $B$. The axion generates oscillating electric current in the surface of conductor. The current is extremely enhanced such as $J_c=(m_aδ_e)^{-2}J_a$ compared with vacuum current $J_a\equiv g_{aγγ}\partial_t a(t)B$; $δ_e$ is skin depth and axion mass $m_a$. We have shown that sufficiently strong radiation is emitted by cylindrical super ( normal ) conductor to be easily detected. Then, we naively expect that such strong radiation also arises in resonant cavity experiment. But w…
We propose a new window to detect axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter from electrically charged fermions, such as electrons and quarks. We specifically consider a direct interaction between the axion and the electron and find that the non-relativistic quantum dynamics induces a spin precession due to the axion and is enhanced by the application of an external electric field. This precession gives a change in magnetic flux which under certain circumstances can yield a detectable signal for SQUID magnetometers.
When axion stars fly through an astrophysical magnetic background, the axion-to-photon conversion may generate a large electromagnetic radiation power. After including the interference effects of the spacially-extended axion-star source and the macroscopic medium effects, we estimate the radiation power when an axion star meets a neutron star. For a dense axion star with $10^{-13}\,M_\odot$, the radiated power is at the order of $10^{11}\,\mbox{W}\times(100\,μ\mbox{eV}/m_a)^4\,(B/10^{10}\,\mbox{Gauss})^2$ with $m_a$ as the axion particle mass and $B$ the strength of the neutron star magnetic f…
As a well-motivated dark matter candidate, axions can be detected through the axion-photon resonant conversion in the magnetospheres of magnetic white dwarf stars or neutron stars. In this work, we utilize Omega Centauri, which is the largest globular cluster in the Milky Way and is suggested to be the remnant core of a dwarf galaxy, to probe the axion dark matter through radio signals that originate from all the neutron stars and magnetic white dwarf stars in it. With 100 hours of observation, the combination of SKA phase 1 and LOFAR can effectively probe the parameter space of the axion-phot…

The elusive nature of Dark Matter (DM) remains a mystery far from being solved. A vast effort is dedicated to search for signatures of feeble DM interactions with Standard Model particles. In this work, we explore the signatures of axion DM boosted by interactions with Supernova neutrinos: Neutrino-Boosted Axion DM ($ν$BADM). We focus on $ν$BADM converting into photons in the Galactic magnetic field, generating a peculiar gamma-ray flux. This signal falls in the poorly explored MeV energy range, that will be probed by next generation gamma-ray missions. Once more, astrophysical searches might …

If QCD axions form a large fraction of the total mass of dark matter, then axion stars could be very abundant in galaxies. As a result, collisions with each other, and with other astrophysical bodies, can occur. We calculate the rate and analyze the consequences of three classes of collisions, those occurring between a dilute axion star and: another dilute axion star, an ordinary star, or a neutron star. In all cases we attempt to quantify the most important astrophysical uncertainties; we also pay particular attention to scenarios in which collisions lead to collapse of otherwise stable axion…
We discuss a possible principle for detecting dark matter axions in galactic halos. If axions constitute a condensate in the Milky Way, stimulated emissions of the axions from a type of excitation in condensed matter can be detectable. We provide general mechanism for the dark matter emission, and, as a concrete example, an emission of dark matter axions from magnetic vortex strings in a type II superconductor are investigated along with possible experimental signatures.
Axion-like particles (ALPs) appear in various new physics models with spontaneous global symmetry breaking. When the ALP mass is in the range of MeV to GeV, the cosmology and astrophysics bounds are so far quite weak. In this work, we investigate such light ALPs through the ALP-strahlung production processes $pp \to W^\pm a, Z a$ with the sequential decay $a \to γγ$ at the 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ (HL-LHC). Building on the concept of jet image which uses calorimeter towers as the pixels of the image and measures a jet as an image, we investigate the potential …
We investigate the bursts of electromagnetic and scalar radiation resulting from the collision, and merger of oscillons made from axion-like particles using 3+1 dimensional lattice simulations of the coupled axion-gauge field system. The radiation into photons is suppressed before the merger. However, it becomes the dominant source of energy loss after the merger if a resonance condition is satisfied. Conversely, the radiation in scalar waves is dominant during initial merger phase but suppressed after the merger. The backreaction of scalar and electromagnetic radiation is included in our simu…
The axion field, the angular direction of the complex scalar field associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry, could have originated with initial non-zero velocity. The presence of a non-zero angular velocity resulting from additional terms in the potential that explicitly break the PQ symmetry has important phenomenological consequences such as a modification of the axion mass with respect to the conventional PQ framework or an explanation for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry. We elaborate further on the consequences of the "kinetic misalignmen…
Light boson dark matter such as axion or hidden photon can be resonantly converted into a magnon in a magnetic insulator under the magnetic field, which can be detected experimentally. We provide a quantum mechanical formulation for the magnon event rate and show that the result is consistent with that obtained by a classical calculation. Besides, it is pointed out that the experimental setup of the QUAX proposal for the axion detection also works as a detector of hidden photon dark matter. It has good sensitivity in the mass range around 1 meV, which is beyond astrophysical constraints.
Detecting axionic dark matter induced electron or nucleon oscillating electric dipole moment (OEDM) has become a new way for dark matter searches. We re-examine such axion-spin couplings in external electromagnetic fields. We point out that axion-photon interaction induces an electron spin effective coupling, which is different from an OEDM. In particular, the axion-spin effective coupling is directly related to magnetic field rather than electric field. For axion-electron or axion-nucleon couplings, an OEDM of fermion is introduced, whose effect in ultralight axion cases depends on whether ax…

We explore the axionic dark matter search sensitivity with a narrow-band detection scheme aiming at the axion-photon conversion by the static electric field inside a cylindrical capacitor. An alternating magnetic field signal is induced by effective currents as the axion dark matter flows perpendicularly through the electric field. At low axion masses, like in a KKLT scenario, front-end narrow band filtering is provided by using LC resonance with a high $Q$ factor, which enhances the detectability of the tiny magnetic field signal and also leads to a thermal noise as the major background that …
Quantum coherence is one of the most striking features of quantum mechanics rooted in the superposition principle. Recently it has been demonstrated that it is possible to harvest the quantum coherence from a coherent scalar field. In order to explore a new method of detecting axion dark matter, we consider a point-like Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to the axion field and quantify a coherent measure of the detector. We show that the detector can harvest the quantum coherence from the axion dark matter. To be more precise, we consider a two-level of electron system in an atom as the detector. I…
