Let $G$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. For an ordered $k$-partition $Π=\{Q_1,\ldots,Q_k\}$ of $V(G)$, the representation of a vertex $v \in V(G)$ with respect to $Π$ is the $k$-vectors $r(v|Π)=(d(v,Q_1),\ldots,d(v,Q_k))$, where $d(v,Q_i)$ is the distance between $v$ and $Q_i$. The partition $Π$ is a resolving partition if $r(u|Π)\neq r(v|Π)$, for each pair of distinct vertices $u,v \in V(G)$. The minimum $k$ for which there is a resolving $k$-partition of $V(G)$ is the partition dimension of $G$. A vertex $w\in V(G)$ strongly resolves two distinct vertices $u,v \in V(G)$ if $u$ belongs to a shortest $v-w$ path or $v$ belongs to a shortest $u-w$ path. An ordered set $W=\{w_{1},\ldots, w_{t}\}\subseteq V(G)$ is a strong resolving set for $G$ if for every two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ of $G$ there exists a vertex $w\in W$ which strongly resolves $u$ and $v$. A strong metric basis of $G$ is a strong resolving set of minimal cardinality. The cardinality of a strong metric basis is called strong metric dimension of $G$. In this paper, we determine the partition dimension and strong metric dimension of a chain cycle constructed by even cycles and a chain cycle constructed by odd cycles.
In this paper, we show that every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles has a partition of its vertex set into two sets, where one set induces a forest, and the other induces a forest with maximum degree at most $2$ (equivalently, a disjoint union of paths). Note that we can partition the vertex set of a forest into two independent sets. However, a pair of independent sets combined may not induce a forest. Thus our result extends the result of Wang and Xu (2013) stating that the vertex set of every planar graph without $4$-cycles and $6$-cycles can be partitioned into three sets, wher…
A graph $G$ is $(I,F)$-partitionable if its vertex set can be partitioned into two parts such that one part is an independent set, and the other induces a forest. In this paper, we prove that every planar graph without cycles of length $4, 6, 9$ is $(I,F)$-partitionable.
The notion of noncrossing linked partition arose from the study of certain transforms in free probability theory. It is known that the number of noncrossing linked partitions of [n+1] is equal to the n-th large Schroder number $r_n$, which counts the number of Schroder paths. In this paper we give a bijective proof of this result. Then we introduce the structures of linked partitions and linked cycles. We present various combinatorial properties of noncrossing linked partitions, linked partitions, and linked cycles, and connect them to other combinatorial structures and results, including incr…
Nash-Williams proved that for an undirected graph $ G $ the set $ E(G) $ can be partitioned into cycles if and only if every cut has either even or infinite number of edges. Later C. Thomassen gave a simpler proof for this and conjectured the following directed analogue of the theorem: the edge set of a digraph can be partitioned into directed cycles if and only if for each subset of the vertices the cardinality of the ingoing and the outgoing edges are equal. The aim of the paper is to prove this conjecture.
An edge colouring of a graph is said to be an $r$-local colouring if the edges incident to any vertex are coloured with at most $r$ colours. Generalising a result of Bessy and Thomassé, we prove that the vertex set of any $2$-locally coloured complete graph may be partitioned into two disjoint monochromatic cycles of different colours. Moreover, for any natural number $r$, we show that the vertex set of any $r$-locally coloured complete graph may be partitioned into $O(r^2 \log r)$ disjoint monochromatic cycles. This generalises a result of Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber.
Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed the following conjecture. Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $3n/4$. Then for every $2$-edge-colouring of $G$, the vertex set $V(G)$ may be partitioned into two vertex-disjoint cycles, one of each colour. We prove that this conjecture holds for $n$ large enough, improving approximate results by the aforementioned authors and by DeBiasio and Nelsen.
Magnant and Martin conjectured that the vertex set of any $d$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices can be partitioned into $n / (d+1)$ paths (there exists a simple construction showing that this bound would be best possible). We prove this conjecture when $d = Ω(n)$, improving a result of Han, who showed that in this range almost all vertices of $G$ can be covered by $n / (d+1) + 1$ vertex-disjoint paths. In fact, our proof gives a partition of $V(G)$ into cycles. We also show that, if $d = Ω(n)$ and $G$ is bipartite, then $V(G)$ can be partitioned into $n / (2d)$ paths (this bound in tight for b…
The Huffman coding algorithm is interpreted in the lattice of partitions of the source alphabet. Maximal chains in the partition lattice correspond to linear extensions of tree orders, and those among the chains that exhibit a simple greedy property correspond precisely to executions of the Huffman algorithm.
We study universal cycles of the set ${\cal P}(n,k)$ of $k$-partitions of the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and prove that the transition digraph associated with ${\cal P}(n,k)$ is Eulerian. But this does not imply that universal cycles (or ucycles) exist, since vertices represent equivalence classes of partitions! We use this result to prove, however, that ucycles of ${\cal P}(n,k)$ exist for all $n \geq 3$ when $k=2$. We reprove that they exist for odd $n$ when $k = n-1$ and that they do not exist for even $n$ when $k = n-1$. An infinite family of $(n,k)$ for which ucycles do not exist is show…
This article is part of an ongoing investigation of the combinatorics of $q,t$-Catalan numbers $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)$. We develop a structure theory for integer partitions based on the partition statistics dinv, deficit, and minimum triangle height. Our goal is to decompose the infinite set of partitions of deficit $k$ into a disjoint union of chains $\mathcal{C}_μ$ indexed by partitions of size $k$. Among other structural properties, these chains can be paired to give refinements of the famous symmetry property $\textrm{Cat}_n(q,t)=\textrm{Cat}_n(t,q)$. Previously, we introduced a map that bui…
Erdős, Gyárfás and Pyber showed that every $r$-edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$ can be covered by $25 r^2 \log r$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles (independent of $n$). Here, we extend their result to the setting of binomial random graphs. That is, we show that if $p = p(n) = Ω(n^{-1/(2r)})$, then with high probability any $r$-edge-coloured $G(n,p)$ can be covered by at most $1000 r^4 \log r $ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles. This answers a question of Korándi, Mousset, Nenadov, Škorić and Sudakov.
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq …
We present a family of partitions of $W_\mathcal{G}$, the set of walks on a directed graph $\mathcal{G}$. Each partition in this family is identified by an integer sequence $K$, which specifies a collection of cycles on $\mathcal{G}$ with a certain well-defined structure. We term such cycles resummable, and a walk that does not traverse any such cycles $K$-irreducible. For a given value of $K$, the corresponding partition of $W_\mathcal{G}$ consists of a collection of cells that each contain a single $K$-irreducible walk $i$ plus all walks that can be formed from $i$ by attaching one or more r…
We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2α(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1…
We show that any complete $k$-partite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, with $k \ge 3$, whose edges are two-coloured, can be covered with two vertex-disjoint monochromatic paths of distinct colours. We prove this under the necessary assumption that the largest partition class of $G$ contains at most $n/2$ vertices. This extends known results for complete and complete bipartite graphs. Secondly, we show that in the same situation, all but $o(n)$ vertices of the graph can be covered with two vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles of distinct colours, if colourings close to a split colouring are excluded.…
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentri…
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemerédi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In a survey paper by Bosek et al., it is shown that Szemerédi's argument could be improved to obtain a lower bound almost twice as good. Variants of the problem were considered where the class is restricted to posets of bounde…
In 1982 Thomassen asked whether there exists an integer f(k,t) such that every strongly f(k,t)-connected tournament T admits a partition of its vertex set into t vertex classes V_1,...,V_t such that for all i the subtournament T[V_i] induced on T by V_i is strongly k-connected. Our main result implies an affirmative answer to this question. In particular we show that f(k,t) = O(k^7 t^4) suffices. As another application of our main result we give an affirmative answer to a question of Song as to whether, for any integer t, there exists an integer h(t) such that every strongly h(t)-connected tou…
A weak order on the set of maximal chains of the non-crossing partition lattice is introduced and studied. A $0$-Hecke algebra action is used to compute the radius of the graph on these chains in which two chains are adjacent if they differ in exactly one element.
We give combinatorial proofs of the formulas for the number of multichains in the $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of classical types with certain conditions on the rank and the block size due to Krattenthaler and M{ü}ller. We also prove Armstrong's conjecture on the zeta polynomial of the poset of $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions of type $A$ invariant under a $180^\circ$ rotation in the cyclic representation.

It is known that every strong tournament has directed cycles of any length, and thereby strong subtournaments of any size. In this note, we prove that they also can share a common vertex which is a king of all of them. This common vertex can be any king in the whole tournament. Further, the Hamiltonian cycles in them can be recursively constructed by inserting an additional vertex to one directed edge.
In a recent paper on a study of the Sylow 2-subgroups of the symmetric group with 2^n elements it has been show that the growth of the first (n-2) consecutive indices of a certain normalizer chain is linked to the sequence of partitions of integers into distinct parts. Unrefinable partitions into distinct parts are those in which no part x can be replaced with integers whose sum is x obtaining a new partition into distinct parts. We prove here that the (n-1)-th index of the previously mentioned chain is related to the number of unrefinable partitions into distinct parts satisfying a condition …
Given a complete graph with positive weights on its edges, we define the weight of a subset of edges as the product of weights of the edges in the subset and consider sums (partition functions) of weights over subsets of various kinds: cycle covers, closed walks, spanning trees. We show that if the weights of the edges of the graph are within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other then the bulk of the partition function is concentrated on the subsets of a particularly simple structure: cycle covers with few cycles, walks that visit every vertex only few times, and spanning trees wi…
Given an integer $n$, we introduce the integral Lie ring of partitions with bounded maximal part, whose elements are in one-to-one correspondence to integer partitions with parts in $\{1,2,\dots, n-1\}$. Starting from an abelian subring, we recursively define a chain of idealizers and we prove that the sequence of ranks of consecutive terms in the chain is definitely periodic. Moreover, we show that its growth depends of the partial sum of the partial sum of the sequence counting the number of partitions. This work generalizes our previous recent work on the same topic, devoted to the modular …
First-Fit is a greedy algorithm for partitioning the elements of a poset into chains. Let $\textrm{FF}(w,Q)$ be the maximum number of chains that First-Fit uses on a $Q$-free poset of width $w$. A result due to Bosek, Krawczyk, and Matecki states that $\textrm{FF}(w,Q)$ is finite when $Q$ has width at most $2$. We describe a family of posets $\mathcal{Q}$ and show that the following dichotomy holds: if $Q\in\mathcal{Q}$, then $\textrm{FF}(w,Q) \le 2^{c(\log w)^2}$ for some constant $c$ depending only on $Q$, and if $Q\not\in\mathcal{Q}$, then $\textrm{FF}(w,Q) \ge 2^w - 1$.
A cycle of length $t$ in a hypergraph is an alternating sequence $v_1,e_1,v_2\dots,v_t,e_t$ of distinct vertices $v_i$ and distinct edges $e_i$ so that $\{v_i,v_{i+1}\}\subseteq e_i$ (with $v_{t+1}:=v_1$). Let $λK_n^h$ be the $λ$-fold $n$-vertex complete $h$-graph. Let $\mathcal G=(V,E)$ be a hypergraph all of whose edges are of size at least $h$, and $2\leq c_1\leq \dots\leq c_k\leq |V|$. In order to partition the edge set of $\mathcal G$ into cycles of specified lengths $c_1, \dots, c_k$, an obvious necessary condition is that $\sum_{i=1}^k c_i=|E|$. We show that this condition is sufficient…
We study the structure of red-blue edge colorings of complete graphs, with no copies of the $n$-cycle $C_n$ in red, and no copies of the $n$-wheel $W_n = C_n \ast K_1$ in blue, for an odd integer $n$. Our first main result is that in any such coloring, deleting at most two vertices we obtain a vertex-partition of $G$ into three sets such that the edges inside the partition classes are red, and edges between partition classes are blue. As a second result, we obtain bounds for the Ramsey numbers of $r(C_{2k+1},W_{2j})$ for $k < j$ integers, which asymptotically confirm the values of $4j+1$, as i…
Lehel conjectured that in every $2$-coloring of the edges of $K_n$, there is a vertex disjoint red and blue cycle which span $V(K_n)$. Łuczak, Rödl, and Szemerédi proved Lehel's conjecture for large $n$, Allen gave a different proof for large $n$, and finally Bessy and Thomassé gave a proof for all $n$. Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás, and Sárközy proposed a significant strengthening of Lehel's conjecture where $K_n$ is replaced by any graph $G$ with $δ(G)> 3n/4$; if true, this minimum degree condition is essentially best possible. We prove that their conjecture holds when $δ(G)>(3/4+o(1))n$. …
We consider the irreducibility of switch-based Markov chains for the approximate uniform sampling of Hamiltonian cycles in a given undirected dense graph on $n$ vertices. As our main result, we show that every pair of Hamiltonian cycles in a graph with minimum degree at least $n/2+7$ can be transformed into each other by switch operations of size at most $10$, implying that the switch Markov chain using switches of size at most $10$ is irreducible. As a proof of concept, we also show that this Markov chain is rapidly mixing on dense monotone graphs.
Let $\mathcal{G}_α$ be a hereditary graph class (i.e, every subgraph of $G_α\in \mathcal{G}_α$ belongs to $\mathcal{G}_α$) such that every graph $G_α$ in $\mathcal{G}_α$ has minimum degree at most 1, or contains either an edge $uv$ such that $d_{G_α}(u)+d_{G_α}(v)\leq α$ or a 2-alternating cycle. It is proved that every graph in $\mathcal{G}_α$ ($α\geq 5$) with maximum degree $Δ$ can be edge-partitioned into two forests $F_1$, $F_2$ and a subgraph $H$ such that $Δ(F_i)\leq \max\{2,\lceil\frac{Δ-α+6}{2}\rceil\}$ for $i=1,2$ and $Δ(H)\leq α-5$.
We introduce a method of decomposing the family of intervals along a cyclic permutation into chains to determine the size of the largest family of subsets of $[n]:= \{1,2,...,n\}$ not containing one or more given posets as a subposet. De Bonis, Katona and Swanepoel determined the size of the largest butterfly-free family. We strengthen this result by showing that, for certain posets containing the butterfly poset as a subposet, the same bound holds. We also obtain the corresponding LYM-type inequalities.
We give an elementary, case-free, Coxeter-theoretic derivation of the formula $h^nn!/|W|$ for the number of maximal chains in the noncrossing partition lattice $NC(W)$ of a real reflection group $W$. Our proof proceeds by comparing the Deligne-Reading recursion with a parabolic recursion for the characteristic polynomial of the $W$-Laplacian matrix considered in our previous work. We further discuss the consequences of this formula for the geometric group theory of spherical and affine Artin groups.
We give a new proof of the Skeletal Lemma, which is the main technical tool in our paper on Hamilton cycles in line graphs [T. Kaiser and P. Vrána, Hamilton cycles in 5-connected line graphs, European J. Combin. 33 (2012), 924-947]. It generalises results on disjoint spanning trees in graphs to the context of 3-hypergraphs. The lemma is proved in a slightly stronger version that is more suitable for applications. The proof is simplified and formulated in a more accessible way.
We consider the groundstate wavefunction of the quantum symmetric antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with open and twisted boundary conditions at $Δ=-{1/2}$, along with the groundstate wavefunction of the corresponding O($n$) loop model at $n=1$. Based on exact results for finite-size systems, sums involving the wavefunction components, and in some cases the largest component itself, are conjectured to be directly related to the total number of alternating sign matrices and plane partitions in certain symmetry classes.

A partition of a finite poset into chains places a natural upper bound on the size of a union of k antichains. A chain partition is k-saturated if this bound is achieved. Greene and Kleitman proved that, for each k, every finite poset has a simultaneously k- and k+1-saturated chain partition. West showed that the Greene-Kleitman Theorem is best-possible in a strong sense by exhibiting, for each c \ge 4, a poset with longest chain of cardinality c and no k- and l-saturated chain partition for any distinct, nonconsecutive k,l < c. We call such posets polyunsaturated. We give necessary and suffic…
Universal cycles are generalizations of de Bruijn cycles and Gray codes that were introduced originally by Chung, Diaconis, and Graham in 1990. They have been developed by many authors since, for various combinatorial objects such as strings, subsets, permutations, partitions, vector spaces, and designs. One generalization of universal cycles, which require almost complete overlap of consecutive words, is s-overlap cycles, which relax such a constraint. In this paper we study weak orders, which are relations that are transitive and complete. We prove the existence of universal and s-overlap cy…
We define and study a special type of hypergraph. A $σ$-hypergraph $H= H(n,r,q$ $\mid$ $σ$), where $σ$ is a partition of $r$, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph having $nq$ vertices partitioned into $ n$ classes of $q$ vertices each. If the classes are denoted by $V_1$, $V_2$,...,$V_n$, then a subset $K$ of $V(H)$ of size $r$ is an edge if the partition of $r$ formed by the non-zero cardinalities $ \mid$ $K$ $\cap$ $V_i \mid$, $ 1 \leq i \leq n$, is $σ$. The non-empty intersections $K$ $\cap$ $V_i$ are called the parts of $K$, and $s(σ)$ denotes the number of parts. We consider various types of cycl…
We completely describe all Brill-Noether loci on metric graphs consisting of a chain of g cycles with arbitrary edge lengths, generalizing work of Cools, Draisma, Payne, and Robeva. The structure of these loci is determined by displacement tableaux on rectangular partitions, which we define. More generally, we fix a marked point on the rightmost cycle, and completely analyze the loci of divisor classes with specified ramification at the marked point, classifying them using displacement tableaux. Our results give a tropical proof of the generalized Brill-Noether theorem for general marked curve…
We classify trivalent vertex-transitive graphs whose edge sets have a partition into a 2-factor composed of two cycles and a 1-factor that is invariant under the action of the automorphism group.
