We present a new analytical description of cosmic structure formation in a mixture of dark and baryonic matter, using the framework of Kinetic Field Theory (KFT) -- a statistical field theory for classical particle dynamics. So far, KFT has only been able to describe a single type of particles, sufficient to consider structure growth due to the gravitational interactions between dark matter. However, the influence of baryonic gas dynamics becomes increasingly relevant when describing smaller scales. In this paper, we thus demonstrate how to extend the KFT formalism as well as a previously presented resummation scheme towards describing such mixtures of two particle species. Thereby, the gas dynamics of baryons are accounted for using the recently developed model of Mesoscopic Particle Hydrodynamics. Assuming a flat $Λ$CDM Universe and a simplified model for the thermal gas evolution, we demonstrate the validity of this approach by computing the linear evolution of the individual and total matter power spectra between the epoch of recombination and today. Our results correctly reproduce the expected behaviour, showing a suppression of both baryonic and dark matter structure growth on scales smaller than the baryonic Jeans length, in good agreement with results from the numerical Boltzmann solver CLASS. Nonlinear corrections within this approach will be investigated in upcoming works.
Recently, Bartelmann et al. presented a 'Kinetic Field Theory' (KFT) formalism to tackle the difficulties of large scale structure formation. In this approach, the dynamics of a non-equilibrium ensemble of classical particles are examined based on methods of statistical field theory. So far, only contributions coming from dark matter were considered, which is assumed to pose an accurate description of our universe on very large scales. Nevertheless, going to smaller scales, also baryonic contributions have to be taken into account. Building on the ideas of Viermann et al. we present an effecti…
In earlier work, we have developed a nonequilibrium statistical field theory description of cosmic structure formation, dubbed Kinetic Field Theory (KFT), which is based on the Hamiltonian phase-space dynamics of classical particles and thus remains valid beyond shell-crossing. Here, we present an exact reformulation of the KFT framework that allows to resum an infinite subset of terms appearing in the original perturbative expansion of KFT. We develop the general formalism of this resummed KFT, including a diagrammatic language for the resummed perturbation theory, and compute the lowest-orde…
Generation of the cosmological baryon asymmetry in frameworks of spontaneous baryogenesis is studied in detail. It is shown that the relation between baryonic chemical potential and the time derivative of the (pseudo)Goldstone field essentially depends upon the representation chosen for the fermionic fields with non-zero baryonic number (quarks). Kinetic equation is modified and numerically solved in equilibrium for the case of time dependent external background or finite integration time to be applicable to the case when energy conservation law is formally violated.
Poorly understood "baryonic physics" impacts our ability to predict the power spectrum of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. We study this in one sample high resolution simulation of galaxy formation and feedback, Illustris. The high resolution of Illustris allows us to probe the kSZ power spectrum on multipoles $\ell =10^3-3\times 10^4$. Strong AGN feedback in Illustris nearly wipes out gas fluctuations at $k\gtrsim1~h~\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ and at late times, likely somewhat under predicting the kSZ power generated at $z\lesssim 1$. The post-reionization kSZ power spectrum for Illustris is…
General features of spontaneous baryogenesis are studied. The relation between the time derivative of the (pseudo)goldstone field and the baryonic chemical potential is revisited. It is shown that this relation essentially depends upon the representation chosen for the fermionic fields with non-zero baryonic number (quarks). The calculations of the cosmological baryon asymmetry are based on the kinetic equation generalized to the case of non-stationary background. The effects of the finite interval of the integration over time are also included into consideration. All these effects combined le…

We consider a possibility that one of the flat directions in the minimal supersymmetric standard model plays the role of the inflaton field and realizes large-field inflation. This is achieved by introducing a generalized shift symmetry on the flat direction, which enables us to control the inflaton potential over large field values. After inflation, higher order terms allowed by the generalized shift symmetry automatically cause a helical motion of the field to create the baryon number of the universe, while baryonic isocurvature fluctuations are suppressed.
The vortical motions of the baryonic gas residing in large scale structures are investigated by cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Proceeding in the formation of the cosmic web, the vortical motions of baryonic matter are pumped up by baroclinity in two stages, i.e., the formation of sheets, and filaments. The mean curl velocity are about $< 1$, 1-10, 10-150, 5-50 km/s in voids, sheets, filaments and knots at $z=0$, respectively. The scaling of the vortical velocity of gas can be well described by the She-Leveque hierarchical turbulence model in the range of $l<0.65(1.50) h^{-1}$ Mpc in si…
We investigate an interacting dark energy model which allows for the kinetic term of the scalar field to couple to dark matter via a power-law interaction. The model is characterised by scaling solutions at early times, which are of high interest to alleviate the coincidence problem, followed by a period of accelerated expansion. We discuss the phenomenology of the background evolution and of the linear scalar perturbations and we identify measurable signatures of the coupling in the dark sector on the cosmic microwave background, the lensing potential auto-correlation and the matter power spe…

We show that the first structures that form in the universe should spontaneously generate magnetic fields. No primordial seed field is required for this "first dynamo". Although the first dynamo starts with kinetic plasma instabilities, we argue that an adequate magnetohydrodynamic description might be possible via a simple trick. This should allow a numerical study of the effect of the first magnetic fields on the first baryonic objects.

We have performed a cosmological numerical simulation of primordial baryonic gas collapsing onto a $3\times10^7$M$_{\odot}$ dark matter (DM) halo. We show that the large scale baryonic accretion process and the merger of few $\sim10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ DM halos, triggered by the gravitational potential of the biggest halo, is enough to create super sonic ($\mathcal{M}>10$) shocks and develop a turbulent environment. In this scenario the post shocked regions are able to produced both H$_2$ and HD molecules very efficiently reaching maximum abundances of $n_\mathrm{H_2}\sim10^{-2}n_\mathrm{H}$ and $n…
We present results of a study of the virial state of high redshift dark matter haloes in an N-body simulation. We find that the majority of collapsed, bound haloes are not virialized at any redshift slice in our study ($z=15-6$) and have excess kinetic energy. At these redshifts, merging is still rampant and the haloes cannot strictly be treated as isolated systems. To assess if this excess kinetic energy arises from the environment, we include the surface pressure term in the virial equation explicitly and relax the assumption that the density at the halo boundary is zero. Upon inclusion of t…
The stability of radially anisotropic spherical stellar systems in modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) is explored by means of numerical simulations performed with the N-body code N-MODY. We find that Osipkov-Merritt MOND models require for stability larger minimum anisotropy radius than equivalent Newtonian systems (ENSs) with dark matter, and also than purely baryonic Newtonian models with the same density profile. The maximum value for stability of the Fridman-Polyachenko-Shukhman parameter in MOND models is lower than in ENSs, but higher than in Newtonian models with no dark matter. We conc…
We describe scalar-bimetric theories where the dynamics of the Universe are governed by two separate metrics, each with an Einstein-Hilbert term. In this setting, the baryonic and dark matter components of the Universe couple to metrics which are constructed as functions of these two gravitational metrics. The scalar field, contrary to dark energy models, does not have a potential whose role is to mimic a late-time cosmological constant. The late-time acceleration of the expansion of the Universe can be easily obtained at the background level in these models by appropriately choosing the coupl…

As compact binary star systems move inside the halo of the galaxies, they interact with dark matter particles. The interaction between dark matter particles and baryonic matter causes dark matter particles to lose some part of their kinetic energy. Once dark matter particles lose part of their kinetic energy, they are gravitationally bound to stars, and stars start to absorb dark matter particles from the halo. The absorption of dark matter particles inside compact binary systems increases the mass of the binary components, and then the total mass of the binary systems increases as well. Accor…
In this work we discuss the application of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism on the scalar field implementation of Generalized Chaplygin Gas models. This corresponds to a Generalised Born-Infeld action for the scalar field, which in an initial fast-rolling phase mimics a matter-like behavior and in the final slow-rolling phase mimics a cosmological constant. In order to enrich the phenomenology of the model, we add an extra functional freedom, specified through a scalar potential for the field. Interestingly, we find that, due to the lifting induced by the non-standard kinetic term, an asymptotic …
The dramatic size evolution of early-type galaxies from z ~ 2 to 0 poses a new challenge in the theory of galaxy formation, which may not be explained by the standard picture. It is shown here that the size evolution can be explained if the non-baryonic cold dark matter is composed of compact objects having a mass scale of ~10^5 M_sun. This form of dark matter is consistent with or only weakly constrained by the currently available observations. The kinetic energy of the dark compact objects is transferred to stars by dynamical friction, and stars around the effective radius are pushed out to …
The EDGES experiment has observed an absorption feature in the global 21 cm spectrum with a surprisingly large amplitude. These results can be explained by decreasing the kinetic temperature of baryons, which could be achieved through the scattering between the baryons and cold dark matter particles. It seems that the most researched dark matter annihilation model is not able to explain such a large amplitude, since the interactions between the particles produced by the dark matter annihilation and the particles that have been present in the Universe could increase the baryonic temperature. Re…
The gaseous media of galaxy clusters and cosmic filaments, which constitute most of the baryonic matter in the universe, is highly dynamic. It is also probably turbulent, although the turbulence properties are poorly known. The gas is highly rarefied, essentially fully ionized plasma. Observational evidence suggests intracluster media (ICMs) are magnetized at some level. There are several possible origins for ICM seed fields; the observed fields are likely the result of turbulence in the ICM. We are engaged in a simulation study designed to understand in this context how very weak initial magn…
As cosmic structures form, matter density fluctuations collapse gravitationally and baryonic matter is shock-heated and thermalized. We therefore expect a connection between the mean gravitational potential energy density of collapsed halos, $Ω_{W}^{\rm halo}$, and the mean thermal energy density of baryons, $Ω_{\rm th}$. These quantities can be obtained using two fundamentally different estimates: we compute $Ω_{W}^{\rm halo}$ using the theoretical framework of the halo model which is driven by dark matter statistics, and measure $Ω_{\rm th}$ using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect which prob…
In this paper, we construct the first asymmetric strongly interacting massive particles (SIMP) dark matter (DM) model, where a new vector-like fermion and a new complex scalar both having nonzero chemical potentials can be asymmetric DM particles. After the spontaneous breaking of a U(1)$^{}_\textsf{D}$ dark gauge symmetry, these two particles can have accidental $\mathbb{Z}^{}_4$ charges making them stable. By adding one more complex scalar as a mediator between the SIMP DM, the relic density of DM is determined by $3 \to 2$ and two-loop induced $2 \to 2$ annihilations in this model. On the o…
It is a well-known fact that the gravitational effect of dark matter in galaxies is only noticeable when the orbital accelerations drop below $a_0 \simeq 2\times 10^{-8}$ cm s$^{-1}$ (Milgrom's Law). This peculiarity of the dynamic behaviour of galaxies was initially ascribed to a modification of Newtonian dynamics (MOND theory) and, consequently, it was used as an argument to criticize the dark matter hypothesis. In our model, warm dark matter is composed by collisionless Vlasov particles with a primordial typical velocity $\simeq 330$ km s$^{-1}$ and, consequently, they evaporated from galac…
We investigate the cosmological properties of Galileon models with positive kinetic terms. We include both conformal and disformal couplings to matter and focus on constraints on the theory that arise because of these couplings. The disformal coupling to baryonic matter is extremely constrained by astrophysical and particle physics effects. The disformal coupling to photons induces a cosmological variation of the speed of light and therefore distortions of the Cosmic Microwave Background spectrum which are known to be very small. The conformal coupling to baryons leads to a variation of partic…
Inserting a varying Lambda in Einstein's field equations can be made consistent with the Bianchi identities by allowing for torsion, without the need to add scalar field degrees of freedom. In the minimal such theory, Lambda is totally free and undetermined by the field equations in the absence of matter. Inclusion of matter ties Lambda algebraically to it, at least when homogeneity and isotropy are assumed, i.e. when there is no Weyl curvature. We show that Lambda is proportional to the matter density, with a proportionality constant depending on the equation of state. Unfortunately, the prop…
There has been much interest in novel models of dark matter that exhibit interesting behavior on galactic scales. A primary motivation is the observed Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation in which the mass of galaxies increases as the quartic power of rotation speed. This scaling is not obviously accounted for by standard cold dark matter. This has prompted the development of dark matter models that exhibit some form of so-called MONDian phenomenology to account for this galactic scaling, while also recovering the success of cold dark matter on large scales. A beautiful example of this are the so-ca…
In the inflation-based cosmology the dark matter (DM) density component starts moving with respect to the universal expansion at $z_{\rm eq}\sim 3,200$ while baryons remain frozen until $z_{\rm rec}\sim 1,100$. It has been suggested that in this case post-linear corrections to the evolution of small fluctuations would result, for the standard $Λ$-dominated cold DM (CDM) model, in delayed formation of early objects as supersonic advection flows develop after recombination, so baryons are not immediately captured by the DM gravity on small scales. We develop the hydrodynamical description of suc…
