In this paper, we theoretically study the critical properties of the classical spin-1 Ising model using two approaches: 1) the analytical low-temperature series expansion and 2) the numerical Metropolis Monte Carlo technique. Within this analysis, we discuss the critical behavior of one-, two- and three-dimensional systems modeled by the first-neighbor spin-1 Ising model for different types of exchange interactions. The comparison of the results obtained according the Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations allows us to highlight the limits of the widely used mean-field theory approach. We also show, via a simple transformation, that for the special case where the bilinear and bicubic terms are set equal to zero in the Hamiltonian the partition function of the spin-1 Ising model can be reduced to that of the spin-1/2 Ising model with temperature dependent external field and temperature independent exchange interaction times an exponential factor depending on the other terms of the Hamiltonian and confirm this result numerically by using the Metropolis Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, we investigate the dependence of the critical temperature on the strength of long-range interactions included in the Ising Hamiltonian comparing it with that of the first-neighbor spin-1/2 Ising model.
We introduce a modification of the well-known Metropolis importance sampling algorithm by using a methodology inspired on the consideration of the reparametrization invariance of the microcanonical ensemble. The most important feature of the present proposal is the possibility of performing a suitable description of microcanonical thermodynamic states during the first-order phase transitions by using this local Monte Carlo algorithm.
On directed Barabasi-Albert networks with two and seven neighbours selected by each added site, the Ising model does not seem to show a spontaneous magnetisation. Instead, the decay time for flipping of the magnetisation follows an Arrhenius law for Metropolis and Glauber algorithms, but for Wolff cluster flipping the magnetisation decays exponentially with time. On these networks the magnetisation behaviour of the Ising model, with Glauber, HeatBath, Metropolis, Wolf or Swendsen-Wang algorithm competing against Kawasaki dynamics, is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the model e…
For a wide class of applications of the Monte Carlo method, we describe a general sampling methodology that is guaranteed to converge to a specified equilibrium distribution function. The method is distinct from that of Metropolis in that it is sometimes possible to arrange for unconditional acceptance of trial moves. It involves sampling states in a local region of phase space with probability equal to, in the first approximation, the square root of the desired global probability density function. The validity of this choice is derived from the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, and the utility of …
We apply numerical simulations to study the criticality of the 3D Ising model with random site quenched dilution. The emphasis is given to the issues not being discussed in detail before. In particular, we attempt a comparison of different Monte Carlo techniques, discussing regions of their applicability and advantages/disadvantages depending on the aim of a particular simulation set. Moreover, besides evaluation of the critical indices we estimate the universal ratio $Γ^+/Γ^-$ for the magnetic susceptibility critical amplitudes. Our estimate $Γ^+/Γ^- = 1.67 \pm 0.15$ is in a good agreement wi…
We investigate as a member of the Ising universality class the Next-Nearest Neighbour Ising model without external field on a simple cubic lattice by using the Monte Carlo Metropolis Algorithm. The Binder cumulant and the susceptibility ratio, which should be universal quantities at the critical point, were shown to vary for small negative next-nearest neighbour interactions.
The Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm with the Finite Element method applied to compute electrostatic interaction energy between charge densities is described in this work. By using the Finite Element method to integrate numerically the Poisson's equation, it is shown that the computing time to obtain the acceptance probability of an elementary trial move does not, in principle, depend on the number of charged particles present in the system.
The Ising model S=1/2 and the S=1 model are studied by efficient Monte Carlo schemes on the (3,4,6,4) and the (3,3,3,3,6) Archimedean lattices. The algorithms used, a hybrid Metropolis-Wolff algorithm and a parallel tempering protocol, are briefly described and compared with the simple Metropolis algorithm. Accurate Monte Carlo data are produced at the exact critical temperatures of the Ising model for these lattices. Their finite-size analysis provide, with high accuracy, all critical exponents which, as expected, are the same with the well known 2d Ising model exact values. A detailed finite…
We study the thermodynamics of classical Heisenberg model using the multipath approach to Metropolis algorithm Monte Carlo simulation. This simulation approach produces uncorrelated results with known precision. Also, it can be easily generalized to other classical models of magnetism. Comparing results obtained from multipath and from single--path simulations we demonstrate that these approaches produce equivalent results.
We show that addition of Metropolis single spin-flips to the Wolff cluster flipping Monte Carlo procedure leads to a dramatic {\bf increase} in performance for the spin-1/2 Ising model. We also show that adding Wolff cluster flipping to the Metropolis or heat bath algorithms in systems where just cluster flipping is not immediately obvious (such as the spin-3/2 Ising model) can substantially {\bf reduce} the statistical errors of the simulations. A further advantage of these methods is that systematic errors introduced by the use of imperfect random number generation may be largely healed by h…
We consider a generalization of the standard Metropolis algorithm acceptance/rejection decision rule and numerically explore its properties using auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo. The generalization involves a free parameter which, given a criterion for proposing attempted moves, can be used to tune the average acceptance rate in a particular way. Such tuning can also potentially change Monte Carlo autocorrelation times, and the combination of the changing acceptance rate and autocorrelation times raises the possibility of more efficient simulations. We explore these issues using primarily …
This article investigates the relationship between the interconnectivity and simulated dynamics of the thalamocortical system from the specific perspective of attempting to maximize the diversity of cortical states. This is achieved by designing the dynamics such that they favor opposing activity between adjacent regions, thus promoting dynamic diversity while avoiding widespread activation or de-activation. The anti-ferromagnetic Ising model with Metropolis dynamics is adopted and applied to four variations of the large-scale connectivity of the cat thalamocortical system: (a) considering onl…

We examine the zero-temperature Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm as a tool for training a neural network by minimizing a loss function. We find that, as expected on theoretical grounds and shown empirically by other authors, Metropolis Monte Carlo can train a neural net with an accuracy comparable to that of gradient descent, if not necessarily as quickly. The Metropolis algorithm does not fail automatically when the number of parameters of a neural network is large. It can fail when a neural network's structure or neuron activations are strongly heterogenous, and we introduce an adaptive Mont…
We introduce a two-temperature Ising model as a prototype of superstatistic critical phenomena. The model is described by two temperatures ($T_1,T_2$) in zero magnetic field. To predict the phase diagram and numerically estimate the exponents, we develop Metropolis and Swendsen-Wang Monte Carlo method. We observe that there is a non-trivial critical line, separating ordered and disordered phases. We propose an analytic equation for the critical line in the phase diagram. Our numerical estimation of the critical exponents illustrates that all points on the critical line belong to the ordinary I…
The critical relaxation from the low-temperature ordered state of the three-dimensional fully frustrated Ising model on a simple cubic lattice has been studied using the short time dynamics method. Particles with the periodic boundary conditions containing N = 262144 spins have been studied. Calculations have been performed by the standard Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm. The static critical exponents of the magnetization and correlation radius have been obtained. The dynamic critical exponent of the model under study has been calculated.
The $n$-index Rényi mutual information and transfer entropy for the two-dimensional kinetic Ising model with arbitrary single-spin dynamics in the thermodynamic limit are derived as functions of thermodynamic quantities. By means of Monte Carlo simulations with the Wolff algorithm, we calculate the information flows in the Ising model with the Metropolis dynamics and the Glauber dynamics. We find that, not only the global Rényi transfer entropy, but also the pairwise Rényi transfer entropy peaks in the disorder phase. Therefore, the Rényi information flows may be used as better tools than the …
A model based on microcanonical Monte Carlo method is used to study the application of the temperature gradient along a two-dimensional (2D) Ising system. We estimate the system size effects on thermal conductivity, $K$, for a nano-scale Ising layer with variable size. It is shown that $K$ scales with size as $ K=cL^α$ where $α$ varies with temperature. Both the Metropolis and Cruetz algorithms have been used to establish the temperature gradient. Further results show that the average demon energy in the presence of an external magnetic field is zero for low temperatures.
We study transition matrices for projected dynamics in the energy-magnetization space, magnetization space and energy space. Several single spin flip dynamics are considered such as the Glauber and Metropolis canonical ensemble dynamics and the Metropolis dynamics for three multicanonical ensembles: the flat energy-magnetization histogram, the flat energy histogram and the flat magnetization histogram. From the numerical diagonalization of the matrices for the projected dynamics we obtain the sub-dominant eigenvalue and the largest relaxation times for systems of varying size. Although, the pr…
Monte Carlo simulations of Ising models coupled to heat baths at two different temperatures are used to study a fluctuation relation for the heat exchanged between the two thermostats in a time $τ$. Different kinetics (single--spin--flip or spin--exchange Kawasaki dynamics), transition rates (Glauber or Metropolis), and couplings between the system and the thermostats have been considered. In every case the fluctuation relation is verified in the large $τ$ limit, both in the disordered and in the low temperature phase. Finite-$τ$ corrections are shown to obey a scaling behavior.
The unusual thermodynamic properties of the Ising antiferromagnet supplemented with a ferromagnetic, mean-field term are outlined. This simple model is inspired by more realistic models of spin-crossover materials. The phase diagram is estimated using Metropolis Monte Carlo methods, and differences with preliminary Wang-Landau Monte Carlo results for small systems are noted.
Effective Curie temperatures measured in Fe monolayer strips agree reasonable with computer sinulations of two-dimensional Ising model strips. The simulations confirm the domain structure seen already by Albano et al.
The Ising ferromagnetic model on a square lattice is revisited using the Galam Unifying Frame (GUF), set to investigate the dynamics of two-state variable systems within the frame of opinion dynamics. When combined with Metropolis dynamics, an unexpected intermediate "dis/order" phase is found with the coexistence of two attractors associated respectively to an ordered and a disordered phases. The basin of attraction of initial conditions for the disordered phase attractor starts from zero size at a first critical temperature $T_{c1}$ to embody the total landscape of initial conditions at a se…
Extensive Monte Carlo simulations in the semi-grand-canonical ensemble are used to study the critical behavior of a three-dimensional compressible Ising model with antiferromagnetic interactions under constant volume conditions. Elastic forces between spins are introduced by the Stillinger-Weber potential and energy parameters are chosen in such a way that antiparallel spin ordering is favored, analogous to the antiferromagnetic coupling in the rigid Ising Hamiltonian. All the quantities analyzed strongly indicate that the system remains in the universality class of the standard (rigid) three-…
We present a surprisingly simple approach to high-accuracy calculations of critical properties of the three-dimensional Ising model. The method uses a modified block-spin transformation with a tunable parameter to improve convergence in Monte Carlo renormalization group. The block-spin parameter must be tuned differently for different exponents to produce optimal convergence.
We propose the clock Monte Carlo technique for sampling each successive chain step in constant time. It is built on a recently proposed factorized transition filter and its core features include its O(1) computational complexity and its generality. We elaborate how it leads to the clock factorized Metropolis (clock FMet) method, and discuss its application in other update schemes. By grouping interaction terms into boxes of tunable sizes, we further formulate a variant of the clock FMet algorithm, with the limiting case of a single box reducing to the standard Metropolis method. A theoretical …
An introduction to the basics of Monte Carlo is given. The topics covered include, sample space, events, probabilities, random variables, mean, variance, covariance, characteristic function, chebyshev inequality, law of large numbers, central limit theorem (stable distribution, Levy distribution), random numbers (generation and testing), random sampling techniques (inversion, rejection, sampling from a Gaussian, Metropolis sampling), analogue Monte Carlo and Importance sampling (exponential biasing, spanier technique).
The influence of correlated impurities on the critical behaviour of the 3D Ising model is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. Spins are confined into the pores of simulated aerogels (diffusion limited cluster-cluster aggregation) in order to study the effect of quenched disorder on the critical behaviour of this magnetic system. Finite size scaling is used to estimate critical couplings and exponents. Long-range correlated disorder does not affect critical behavior. Asymptotic exponents differ from those of the pure 3D Ising model (3DIS), but it is impossible, with our precision, to disting…
We study instantaneous quenches from infinite temperature to well below $T_c$ in the two-dimensional square lattice Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of a longitudinal external magnetic field. Under single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm Monte Carlo dynamics, this protocol produces a pair of magnetization plateaus that prevent the system from reaching the equilibrium ground state except for some special values of the field. We explain the plateaus in terms of local spin configurations that are stable under the dynamics.
We introduce a Generalized Loop Move (GLM) update for Monte Carlo simulations of frustrated Ising models on two-dimensional lattices with bond-sharing plaquettes. The GLM updates are designed to enhance Monte Carlo sampling efficiency when the system's low-energy states consist of an extensive number of degenerate or near-degenerate spin configurations, separated by large energy barriers to single spin flips. Through implementation on several frustrated Ising models, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the GLM updates in cases where both degenerate and near-degenerate sets of configurations ar…

In dynamic Monte Carlo simulations, using for example the Metropolis dynamic, it is often required to simulate for long times and to simulate large systems. We present an overview of advanced algorithms to simulate for larger times and to simulate larger systems. The longer-time algorithm focused on is the Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains (MCAMC) algorithm. It is applied to metastability of an Ising model on a small-world network. Simulations of larger systems often require the use of non-trivial parallelization. Non-trivial parallelization of dynamic Monte Carlo is shown to allow perf…
We present a simple approach to high-accuracy calculations of critical properties for the three-dimensional Ising model, without prior knowledge of the critical temperature. The iterative method uses a modified block-spin transformation with a tunable parameter to improve convergence in the Monte Carlo renormalization group trajectory. We found experimentally that the iterative method enables the calculation of the critical temperature simultaneously with a critical exponent.
The extension of Boltzmann-Gibbs thermostatistics, proposed by Tsallis, introduces an additional parameter $q$ to the inverse temperature $β$. Here, we show that a previously introduced generalized Metropolis dynamics to evolve spin models is not local and does not obey the detailed energy balance. In this dynamics, locality is only retrieved for $q=1$, which corresponds to the standard Metropolis algorithm. Non-locality implies in very time consuming computer calculations, since the energy of the whole system must be reevaluated, when a single spin is flipped. To circumvent this costly calcul…
We use an efficient method that eases the daunting task of simulating dynamics in spin systems with long-range interaction. Our Monte Carlo simulations of the long-range Ising model for the nonequilibrium phase ordering dynamics in two spatial dimensions erform significantly faster than the standard Metropolis approach and considerably more efficiently than the kinetic Monte Carlo method. Importantly, this enables us to establish agreement with the theoretical prediction for the time dependence of domain growth, in contrast to previous numerical studies. This method can easily be generalized t…
We construct a rejection-free Monte Carlo algorithm for a system with continuous degrees of freedom. We illustrate the algorithm by applying it to the classical three-dimensional Heisenberg model with canonical Metropolis dynamics. We obtain the lifetime of the metastable state following a reversal of the external magnetic field. Our rejection-free algorithm obtains results in agreement with a direct implementation of the Metropolis dynamic and requires orders of magnitude less computational time at low temperatures. The treatment is general and can be extended to other dynamics and other syst…
In this article, we present an event-driven algorithm that generalizes the recent hard-sphere event-chain Monte Carlo method without introducing discretizations in time or in space. A factorization of the Metropolis filter and the concept of infinitesimal Monte Carlo moves are used to design a rejection-free Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm for particle systems with arbitrary pairwise interactions. The algorithm breaks detailed balance, but satisfies maximal global balance and performs better than the classic, local Metropolis algorithm in large systems. The new algorithm generates a continu…
We introduce a Monte Carlo algorithm to efficiently compute transport properties of chaotic dynamical systems. Our method exploits the importance sampling technique that favors trajectories in the tail of the distribution of displacements, where deviations from a diffusive process are most prominent. We search for initial conditions using a proposal that correlates states in the Markov chain constructed via a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. We show that our method outperforms the direct sampling method and also Metropolis-Hastings methods with alternative proposals. We test our general method t…

We propose a modified power method for computing the subdominant eigenvalue $λ_2$ of a matrix or continuous operator. Here we focus on defining simple Monte Carlo methods for its application. The methods presented use random walkers of mixed signs to represent the subdominant eigenfuction. Accordingly, the methods must cancel these signs properly in order to sample this eigenfunction faithfully. We present a simple procedure to solve this sign problem and then test our Monte Carlo methods by computing the $λ_2$ of various Markov chain transition matrices. We first computed ${λ_2}$ for several …
We have developed an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm, which accelerates slow Monte Carlo dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional Ising spin systems. The loop algorithm of the quantum Monte Carlo method is applied to the classical spin models with highly anisotropic exchange interactions. Both correlation time and real CPU time are reduced drastically. The algorithm is demonstrated in the layered triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model. We have obtained the relation between the transition temperature and the exchange interaction parameters, which modifies the result of the chain-mean-field t…
We explore the phase diagram of Ising spins on one-dimensional chains which criss-cross in two perpendicular directions and which are connected by interchain couplings. This system is of interest as a simpler, classical analog of a quantum Hamiltonian which has been proposed as a model of magnetic behavior in Nb$_{12}$O$_{29}$ and also, conceptually, as a geometry which is intermediate between one and two dimensions. Using mean field theory as well as Metropolis Monte Carlo and Wang-Landau simulations, we locate quantitatively the boundaries of four ordered phases. Each becomes an effective Is…
In the past decade low-temperature Glauber dynamics for the one-dimensional Ising system has been several times observed experimentally and occurred to be one of the most important theoretical approaches in a field of molecular nanomagnets. On the other hand, it has been shown recently that Glauber dynamics with the Metropolis flipping probability for the zero-temperature Ising ferromagnet under synchronous updating can lead surprisingly to the antiferromagnetic steady state. In this paper the generalized class of Glauber dynamics at zero-temperature will be considered and the relaxation into …
With the help of the replica exchange Monte Carlo method and the improved Monte Carlo renormalization-group scheme, we investigate over a wide area in the phase diagram of the Gaussian random field Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. We found that the phase transition at a weak random field belongs to the same universality class as the zero-temperature phase transition. We also present a possible scenario for the replica symmetry breaking transition.
Equilibrium systems evolve according to Detailed Balance (DB). This principe guided development of the Monte-Carlo sampling techniques, of which Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm is the famous representative. It is also known that DB is sufficient but not necessary. We construct irreversible deformation of a given reversible algorithm capable of dramatic improvement of sampling from known distribution. Our transformation modifies transition rates keeping the structure of transitions intact. To illustrate the general scheme we design an Irreversible version of Metropolis-Hastings (IMH) and tes…
The dynamical critical exponent $z$ is a fundamental quantity in characterizing quantum criticality, and it is well known that the presence of dissipation in a quantum model has significant impact on the value of $z$. Studying quantum Ising spin models using Monte Carlo methods, we estimate the dynamical critical exponent $z$ and the correlation length exponent $ν$ for different forms of dissipation. For a two-dimensional quantum Ising model with Ohmic site dissipation, we find $z \approx 2$ as for the corresponding one-dimensional case, whereas for a one-dimensional quantum Ising model with O…
The Ising model is a simple statistical model for ferromagnetism. There are analytic solutions for low dimensions and very efficient Monte Carlo methods, such as cluster algorithms, for simulating this model in special cases. However most approaches do not generalise to arbitrary lattices and couplings. We present a formalism that allows one to apply Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations to the Ising model, demonstrating how a system with discrete degrees of freedom can be simulated with continuous variables. Because of the flexibility of HMC, our formalism is easily generalizable to arbitrary …
The Monte Carlo analysis for the magnetic response of a single-walled nanotube using the Metropolis and Wang Landau algorithms is reported in the present paper. The nanotube architecture used in the present study utilizes the spin half Ising model with nearest neighbors interaction and obtained various magnetic orderings namely, ferromagnetic, G-type anti-ferromagnetic, A-type anti-ferromagnetic, and C-type anti-ferromagnetic. It is also found that the phase changes from ferromagnetic/anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic with the modification of system's control parameters. The transition temper…
