We present a simple approach to high-accuracy calculations of critical properties for the three-dimensional Ising model, without prior knowledge of the critical temperature. The iterative method uses a modified block-spin transformation with a tunable parameter to improve convergence in the Monte Carlo renormalization group trajectory. We found experimentally that the iterative method enables the calculation of the critical temperature simultaneously with a critical exponent.
We present a surprisingly simple approach to high-accuracy calculations of critical properties of the three-dimensional Ising model. The method uses a modified block-spin transformation with a tunable parameter to improve convergence in Monte Carlo renormalization group. The block-spin parameter must be tuned differently for different exponents to produce optimal convergence.
Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method we study the surface critical behaviour of the magnetization in Ising strips in the subcritical region. Our results support the prediction that the surface magnetization in the two phases along the pseudo-coexistence curve also behaves as for the ordinary transition below the wetting temperature for the finite value of the surface field.
Using a recently proposed new renormalization group method (tensor renormalization group), we analyze the Ising model on the 2-dimensional square lattice. For the lowest order approximation with two domain wall states, it realizes the idea of coarse graining of domain walls. We write down explicit analytic renormalization transformation and prove that the picture of the coarse graining of the physical domain walls does hold for all physical renormalization group flows. We solve it to get the fixed point structure and obtain the critical exponents and the critical temperature. These results are…
The two- and three-dimensional transverse-field Ising models with ferromagnetic exchange interactions are analyzed by means of the real-space renormalization group method. The basic strategy is a generalization of a method developed for the one-dimensional case, which exploits the exact invariance of the model under renormalization and is known to give the exact values of the critical point and critical exponent $ν$. The resulting values of the critical exponent $ν$ in two and three dimensions are in good agreement with those for the classical Ising model in three and four dimensions. This is …
We perform a Monte Carlo Renormalization Group analysis of the critical behavior of the ferromagnetic Ising model on a Sierpiński fractal with Hausdorff dimension $d_f\simeq 1.8928$. This method is shown to be relevant to the calculation of the critical temperature $T_c$ and the magnetic eigen-exponent $y_h$ on such structures. On the other hand, scaling corrections hinder the calculation of the temperature eigen-exponent $y_t$. At last, the results are shown to be consistent with a finite size scaling analysis.
We study two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model on a series of regular lattices, which are represented as the tessellation of polygons with p>=5 sides, such as pentagons (p=5), hexagons (p=6), etc. Such lattices are on hyperbolic planes, which have constant negative scalar curvatures. We calculate critical temperatures and scaling exponents by use of the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. As a result, the mean-field like phase transition is observed for all the cases p>=5. Convergence of the calculated transition temperatures with respect to p is investigated towards the l…
We have adjusted the Density Matrix Renormalization method to handle two dimensional systems of limited width. The key ingredient for this extension is the incorporation of symmetries in the method. The advantage of our approach is that we can force certain symmetry properties to the resulting ground state wave function. Combining the results obtained for system sizes up-to $30 \times 6$ and finite size scaling, we derive the phase transition point and the critical exponent for the gap in the Ising model in a Transverse Field on a two dimensional square lattice.
Critical behavior of the Ising model is investigated at the center of large scale finite size systems, where the lattice is represented as the tiling of pentagons. The system is on the hyperbolic plane, and the recursive structure of the lattice makes it possible to apply the corner transfer matrix renormalization group method. From the calculated nearest neighbor spin correlation function and the spontaneous magnetization, it is concluded that the phase transition of this model is mean-field like. One parameter deformation of the corner Hamiltonian on the hyperbolic plane is discussed.
Hierarchical lattices that constitute spatially anisotropic systems are introduced. These lattices provide exact solutions for hierarchical models and, simultaneously, approximate solutions for uniaxially or fully anisotropic d=3 physical models. The global phase diagrams, with d=2 and d=1 to d=3 crossovers, are obtained for Ising, XY magnetic models and percolation systems, including crossovers from algebraic order to true long-range order.
Using transfer-matrix extended phenomenological renormalization-group methods [M.A.Yurishchev, Nucl. Phys. B (Proc. Suppl.) 83-84, 727 (2000); hep-lat/9908019; J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 91, 332 (2000); cond-mat/0108002] the improved estimates for the critical temperature of spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple-cubic lattice with partly anisotropic coupling strengths ${\vec J}=(J',J',J)$ are obtained. Universality of both fundamental critical exponents $y_t$ and $y_h$ is confirmed. We show also that the critical finite-size scaling amplitude ratios $A_{χ^{(4)}}A_κ/A_χ^2$, $A_{κ^{''}}/A_χ$, and $A_{κ^{(4…
We consider the Ising model and the directed walk on two-dimensional layered lattices and show that the two problems are inherently related: The zero-field thermodynamical properties of the Ising model are contained in the spectrum of the transfer matrix of the directed walk. The critical properties of the two models are connected to the scaling behavior of the eigenvalue spectrum of the transfer matrix which is studied exactly through renormalization for different self-similar distributions of the couplings. The models show very rich bulk and surface critical behaviors with nonuniversal criti…
Phase transitions of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Ising model on a square lattice are studied using the higher-order tensor renormalization group(HOTRG) method. This system involves a competition between the ferromagnetic interaction $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic interaction $J_2$. Furthermore, weak first-order and second-order transitions are observed near the ratio $g=J_2/|J_1|=1/2$. Our results (based on HOTRG calculations for significantly larger sizes) indicate that the region of the first-order transition is marginally narrower than that in previous studies. Moreover, the universality class of the seco…
An analysis is made of various methods of phenomenological renormalization based on finite-size scaling equations for inverse correlation lengths, the singular part of the free energy density, and their derivatives. The analysis is made using two-dimensional Ising and Potts lattices and the three-dimensional Ising model. Variants of equations for the phenomenological renormalization group are obtained which ensure more rapid convergence than the conventionally used Nightingale phenomenological renormalization scheme. An estimate is obtained for the critical finite-size scaling amplitude of the…
We calculate the critical exponent $η$ of the $D$-dimensional Ising model from a simple truncation of the functional renormalization group flow equations for a scalar field theory with long-range interaction. Our approach relies on the smallness of the inverse range of the interaction and on the assumption that the Ginzburg momentum defining the width of the scaling regime in momentum space is larger than the scale where the renormalized interaction crosses over from long-range to short-range; the numerical value of $η$ can then be estimated by stopping the renormalization group flow at this s…
We show that, contrary to previous suggestions based on computer simulations or erroneous theoretical treatments, the critical points of the random-field Ising model out of equilibrium, when quasi-statically changing the applied source at zero temperature, and in equilibrium are not in the same universality class below some critical dimension $d_{DR}\approx 5.1$. We demonstrate this by implementing a non-perturbative functional renormalization group for the associated dynamical field theory. Above $d_{DR}$, the avalanches, which characterize the evolution of the system at zero temperature, bec…
Extending the parameter space of the three-dimensional (d=3) Ising model, we search for a regime of eliminated corrections to finite-size scaling. For that purpose, we consider a real-space renormalization group (RSRG) with respect to a couple of clusters simulated with the transfer-matrix (TM) method. Imposing a criterion of "scale invariance," we determine a location of the non-trivial RSRG fixed point. Subsequent large-scale TM simulation around the fixed point reveals eliminated corrections to finite-size scaling. As anticipated, such an elimination of corrections admits systematic finite-…
In this work, an exact renormalization group treatment of honeycomb lattice leading to an exact relation between the coupling strengths of the honeycomb and the triangular lattices is presented. Using the honeycomb and the triangular duality relation, the critical coupling values of honeycomb and triangular lattices are calculated exactly by the simultaneous solution of the renormalized relation and the duality relation, without using the so-called star-triangular transformation. Apparently, the obtained coupling relation is unique. It, not only takes place the role of the star triangular rela…
Real Space Renormalization Group (RSRG) treatment of Ising model for square and simple cubic lattice is investigated and critical coupling strengths of these lattices are obtained. The mathematical complications, which appear inevitable in the decimated partition function due to Block-spin transformation, is treated with a relevant approximation. The approximation is based on the approximate equivalence of $\ln(1+f(K,\{σ_{n.n}\})) \simeq f(K,\{σ_{n.n}\})$ for small $f(K,\{σ_{n.n}\})$, here $K$ is the nearest neighbor coupling strength and $\{σ_{n.n}\}$ is the nearest neighbor spins degrees of …
On the example of the three-dimensional Ising model, we show that nonperturbative renormalization group equations allow one to obtain very accurate critical exponents. Implementing the order $\partial^4$ of the derivative expansion leads to $ν=0.632$ and to an anomalous dimension $η=0.033$ which is significantly improved compared with lower orders calculations.
In this paper we propose a novel method to study critical systems numerically by a combined collective-mode algorithm and Renormalization Group on the lattice. This method is an improved version of MCRG in the sense that it has all the advantages of cluster algorithms. As an application we considered the 2D Ising model and studied wether scale invariance or universality are possible underlying mechanisms responsible for the approximate "universal fluctuations" close to a so-called bulk temperature $T^*(L)$. "Universal fluctuations" was first proposed in [1] and stated that the probability dens…
The random-field Ising model shows extreme critical slowdown that has been described by activated dynamic scaling: the characteristic time for the relaxation to equilibrium diverges exponentially with the correlation length, $\ln τ\sim ξ^ψ/T$ , with $ψ$ an \textit{a priori} unknown barrier exponent. Through a nonperturbative functional renormalization group, we show that for spatial dimensions $d$ less than a critical value $d_{DR} \simeq 5.1$, also associated with dimensional-reduction breakdown, $ψ=θ$ with $θ$ the temperature exponent near the zero-temperature fixed point that controls the c…
We show that the critical manifold of a statistical mechanical system in the vicinity of a critical point is locally accessible through correlation functions at that point. A practical numerical method is presented to determine the tangent space and the curvature to the critical manifold with Variational Monte Carlo Renormalization Group. Because of the use of a variational bias potential of the coarse-grained variables, critical slowing down is greatly alleviated in the Monte Carlo simulation. In addition, this method is free of truncation error. We study the isotropic Ising model on square a…
We extend to quenched disordered systems the variational scheme for real space renormalization group calculations that we recently introduced for homogeneous spin Hamiltonians. When disorder is present our approach gives access to the flow of the renormalized Hamiltonian distribution, from which one can compute the critical exponents if the correlations of the renormalized couplings retain finite range. Key to the variational approach is the bias potential found by minimizing a convex functional in statistical mechanics. This potential reduces dramatically the Monte Carlo relaxation time in la…
The phase-diagram of the two-dimensional Blume-Capel model with a random crystal field is investigated within the framework of a real-space renormalization group approximation. Our results suggest that, for any amount of randomness, the model exhibits a line of Ising-like continuous transitions, as in the pure model, but no first-order transition. At zero temperature the transition is also continuous, but not in the same universality class as the Ising model. In this limit, the attractor (in the renormalization group sense) is the percolation fixed point of the site diluted spin-1/2 Ising mode…
Here is the first part of the summary of my work on random Ising model using real-space renormalization group (RSRG), also known as a Migdal-Kadanoff one. This approximate renormalization scheme was applied to the analysis thermodynamic properties of the model, and of probabilistic properties of a pair correlator, which is a fluctuating object in disordered systems. Calculation of thermodynamic functions of the three-dimensional Ising ferromagnet above and below critical temperature is performed in the approximation of sixfold basis distribution ($ρ^6$ model). Comparison with the results for the $ρ^4$ model indicates that dependence of the thermodynamic functions on the renormalization group parameter $s$ becomes weaker. The optimal interval of the renormalization group parameter values is determined.
The Shannon and the Renyi entropies of the ground state wavefunction in the pure and in the random quantum Ising chain are studied via the self-dual Fernandez-Pacheco real-space renormalization procedure. In particular, we analyze the critical behavior of the leading extensive term at the quantum phase transition : the derivative with respect to the control parameter is found to be logarithmically divergent in the pure case, and to display a cusp singularity in the random case. This cusp singularity for the random case is also derived via the Strong Disorder Renormalization approach.
The spin-3/2 Ising model, with nearest-neighbor interactions only, is the prototypical system with two different ordering species, with concentrations regulated by a chemical potential. Its global phase diagram, obtained in d=3 by renormalization-group theory in the Migdal-Kadanoff approximation or equivalently as an exact solution of a d=3 hierarchical lattice, with flows subtended by 40 different fixed points, presents a very rich structure containing eight different ordered and disordered phases, with more than fourteen different types of phase diagrams in temperature and chemical potential…
With the help of the replica exchange Monte Carlo method and the improved Monte Carlo renormalization-group scheme, we investigate over a wide area in the phase diagram of the Gaussian random field Ising model on the simple cubic lattice. We found that the phase transition at a weak random field belongs to the same universality class as the zero-temperature phase transition. We also present a possible scenario for the replica symmetry breaking transition.
We investigate the explicit renormalization group for fermionic field theoretic representation of two-dimensional random bond Ising model with long-range correlated disorder. We show that a new fixed point appears by introducing a long-range correlated disorder. Such as the one has been observed in previous works for the bosonic ($ϕ^4$) description. We have calculated the correlation length exponent and the anomalous scaling dimension of fermionic fields at this fixed point. Our results are in agreement with the extended Harris criterion derived by Weinrib and Halperin.
We investigate the Kramers-Wannier approximation for the three-dimensional (3D) Ising model. The variational state is represented by an effective 2D Ising model, which contains two variational parameters. We numerically calculate the variational partition function using the corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method, and find its maximum with respect to the variational parameters. The calculated transition point $K_{\rm c} = 0.2184$ is only 1.5% less than the true $K_{\rm c}$; the result is better than that obtained by the corner transfer tensor renormalization group (CTTRG) a…
Using the quasi-exact density-matrix renormalization-group method we calculate the solvation forces in two-dimensional Ising films of thickness L subject to identical algebraically decaying boundary fields with various decay exponents p. At the bulk critical point the solvation force acquires a universal contribution which is long-ranged in L due to the critical fluctuations, a phenomenon known as the critical Casimir effect. For p = 2, 3 and 50, we study the scaling behaviour of the solvation force along the pseudo-phase coexistence and along the critical and sub-critical isotherms.
We present a numerical study on the ordering dynamics of a one-dimensional nonequilibrium Ising spin system with chirality. This system is characterized by a direction-dependent spin update rule. Pairs of $+-$ spins can flip to $++$ or $--$ with probability $(1-u)$ or to $-+$ with probability $u$ while $-+$ pairs are frozen. The system was found to evolve into the ferromagnetic ordered state at any $u<1$ exhibiting the power-law scaling of the characteristic length scale $ξ\sim t^{1/z}$ and the domain wall density $ρ\sim t^{-δ}$. The scaling exponents $z$ and $δ$ were found to vary continuousl…
The critical behavior of the Ising model on a fractal lattice, which has the Hausdorff dimension $\log_{4} 12 \approx 1.792$, is investigated using a modified higher-order tensor renormalization group algorithm supplemented with automatic differentiation to compute relevant derivatives efficiently and accurately. The complete set of critical exponents characteristic of a second-order phase transition was obtained. Correlations near the critical temperature were analyzed through two impurity tensors inserted into the system, which allowed us to obtain the correlation lengths and calculate the c…
The critical behavior of three-dimensional weakly diluted quenched Ising model is examined on the base of six-loop renormalization group expansions obtained within the minimal subtraction scheme in $4-ε$ space dimensions. For this purpose the $ϕ^4$ field theory with cubic symmetry was analyzed in the replica limit $n\rightarrow 0$. Along with renormalization group expansions in terms of renormalized couplings the $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ expansions of critical exponents are presented. Corresponding numerical estimates for the physical, three-dimensional system are obtained by means of different re…
The transverse-field Ising models with random exchange interactions in finite dimensions are investigated by means of a real-space renormalization-group method. The scheme yields the exact values of the critical point and critical exponent nu in one dimension and some previous results in the case of random ferromagnetic interactions are reproduced in two and three dimensions. We apply the scheme to spin glasses in transverse fields in two and three dimensions, which have not been analyzed very extensively. The phase diagrams and the critical exponent nu are obtained and evidence for the existe…
Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method we study the two-dimensional Ising model in strip geometry. This renormalization scheme enables us to consider the system up to the size 300 x infinity and study the influence of the bulk magnetic field on the system at full range of temperature. We have found out the crossover in the behavior of the correlation length on the line of coexistence of the excited states. A detailed study of scaling of this line is performed. Our numerical results support and specify previous conclusions by Abraham, Parry, and Upton based on the related bubble …
A modified density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is introduced and applied to classical two-dimensional models: the anisotropic triangular nearest- neighbor Ising (ATNNI) model and the anisotropic triangular next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model. Phase diagrams of both models have complex structures and exhibit incommensurate phases. It was found that the incommensurate phase completely separates the disordered phase from one of the commensurate phases, i. e. the non-existence of the Lifshitz point in phase diagrams of both models was confirmed.
A modified renormalization group equation for the inverse extrapolation length $c$ is derived by considering the phase shifts of order parameter fluctuations. The resulting non-linear equation is also derived using standard methods and some additional assumptions. The associated renormalized flow $c(l)$ exhibits the correct behavior near both the special and ordinary fixed points and in particular yields a canonical scaling of $c$ with cross-over exponent $ϕ_{\rm ord} = -ν$ near the ordinary transition.
In this paper, we present a general derivation of a modified fluctuation-dissipation theorem (MFDT) valid near an arbitrary non-stationary state for a system obeying markovian dynamics. We show that the method to derive modified fluctuation-dissipation theorems near non-equilibrium stationary states used by J. Prost et al., PRL 103, 090601 (2009), is generalizable to non-stationary states. This result follows from both standard linear response theory and from a transient fluctuation theorem, analogous to the Hatano-Sasa relation. We show that this modified fluctuation-dissipation theorem can b…
We consider the stochastic dynamics of Ising ferromagnets (either pure or random) near zero temperature. The master equation satisfying detailed balance can be mapped onto a quantum Hamiltonian which has an exact zero-energy ground state representing the thermal equilibrium. The largest relaxation time $t_{eq}$ governing the convergence towards this Boltzmann equilibrium in finite-size systems is determined by the lowest non-vanishing eigenvalue $E_1=1/t_{eq}$ of the quantum Hamiltonian $H$. We introduce and study a real-space renormalization procedure for the quantum Hamiltonian associated to…
The Ising and BEG models critical behavior is analyzed in 2D and 3D by means of a renormalization group scheme on small clusters made of a few lattice cells. Different kinds of cells are proposed for both ordered and disordered model cases. In particular, cells preserving a possible antiferromagnetic ordering under decimation allow for the determination of the Néel critical point and its scaling indices. These also provide more reliable estimates of the Curie fixed point than those obtained using cells preserving only the ferromagnetic ordering. In all studied dimensions, the present procedure…
We propose a symmetric version of the multi-scale entanglement renormalization Ansatz (MERA) in two spatial dimensions (2D) and use this Ansatz to find an unknown ground state of a 2D quantum system. Results in the simple 2D quantum Ising model on the $8\times8$ square lattice are found to be very accurate even with the smallest non-trivial truncation parameter.
Renormalization group on hierarchical lattices is often considered a valuable tool to understand the critical behavior of more complicated statistical mechanical models. In presence of quenched disorder, however, in many model cases predictions obtained with the Migdal-Kadanoff bond removal approach fail to quantitatively and qualitatively reproduce critical properties obtained in the mean-field approximation or by numerical simulations in finite dimensions. In order to critically review this limitation we analyze the behavior of Ising and Blume-Emery-Griffiths models on more complicated hiera…
We study the Ising model in a hierarchical small-world network by renormalization group analysis, and find a phase transition between an ordered phase and a critical phase, which is driven by the coupling strength of the shortcut edges. Unlike ordinary phase transitions, which are related to unstable renormalization fixed points (FPs), the singularity in the ordered phase of the present model is governed by the FP that coincides with the stable FP of the ordered phase. The weak stability of the FP yields peculiar criticalities including logarithmic behavior. On the other hand, the critical pha…
Following the Renormalization Group scheme recently developed by Pietronero {\it et al}, we introduce a simplifying strategy for the renormalization of the relaxation dynamics of sandpile models. In our scheme, five sub-cells at a generic scale $b$ form the renormalized cell at the next larger scale. Now the fixed point has a unique nonzero dynamical component that allows for a great simplification in the computation of the critical exponent $z$. The values obtained are in good agreement with both numerical and theoretical results previously reported.
We use the generic replica symmetric cubic field-theory to study the transition of short range Ising spin glasses in a magnetic field around the upper critical dimension, d=6. A novel fixed-point is found, in addition to the well-known zero magnetic field fixed-point, from the application of the renormalization group. In the spin glass limit, n going to 0, this fixed-point governs the critical behaviour of a class of systems characterised by a single cubic interaction parameter. For this universality class, the spin glass susceptibility diverges at criticality, whereas the longitudinal mode re…
We study how the formalism of the Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) can be extended to inhomogeneous systems. HRT is a liquid state theory which implements the basic ideas of Wilson momentum shell renormalization group (RG) to microscopic Hamiltonians. In the case of homogeneous systems, HRT provides accurate results even in the critical region, where it reproduces scaling and non-classical critical exponents. We applied the HRT to study wetting critical phenomena in a planar geometry. Our formalism avoids the explicit definition of effective surface Hamiltonians but leads, close to the wett…
The real-space renormalization group (RG) treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains by Fisher ({\it Phys. Rev. B{\bf 51}, 6411 (1995)}) has been extended into the strongly ordered and strongly disordered Griffiths phases and asymptotically exact results are obtained. In the non-critical region the asymmetry of the renormalization of the couplings and the transverse fields is related to a non-linear quantum control parameter, $Δ$, which is a natural measure of the distance from the quantum critical point. $Δ$, which is found to stay invariant along the RG trajectories and has been …
We employ an adaptation of a strong-disorder renormalization-group technique in order to analyze the ferro-paramagnetic quantum phase transition of Ising chains with aperiodic but deterministic couplings under the action of a transverse field. In the presence of marginal or relevant geometric fluctuations induced by aperiodicity, for which the critical behavior is expected to depart from the Onsager universality class, we derive analytical and asymptotically exact expressions for various critical exponents (including the correlation-length and the magnetization exponents, which are not easily …
Modification of the renormalization-group approach, invoking Stratonovich transformation at each step, is proposed to describe phase transitions in 3D Ising-class systems. The proposed method is closely related to the mean-field approximation. The low-order scheme works well for a wide thermal range, is consistent with a scaling hypothesis and predicts very reasonable values of critical indices.

The renormalization-group (RG) functions for the three-dimensional n-vector cubic model are calculated in the five-loop approximation. High-precision numerical estimates for the asymptotic critical exponents of the three-dimensional impure Ising systems are extracted from the five-loop RG series by means of the Pade-Borel-Leroy resummation under n = 0. These exponents are found to be: γ= 1.325 +/- 0.003, η= 0.025 +/- 0.01, ν= 0.671 +/- 0.005, α= - 0.0125 +/- 0.008, β= 0.344 +/- 0.006. For the correction-to-scaling exponent, the less accurate estimate ω= 0.32 +/- 0.06 is obtained.
A simple modification of the standard Renormalization Group (RG) technique for the study of quantum spin systems is introduced. Our method which takes into account the effect of boundary conditions by employing the concept of superblock, may be regarded as a simple way for obtaining first estimates of many properties of spin systems. By applying this method to the xxz spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain, we obtain the ground state energy with much higher accuracy than the standard RG. We have also obtained the staggered magnetization and the z-component of spin-spin correlation function which confirms t…
