We present a novel learning approach to recover the 6D poses and sizes of unseen object instances from an RGB-D image. To handle the intra-class shape variation, we propose a deep network to reconstruct the 3D object model by explicitly modeling the deformation from a pre-learned categorical shape prior. Additionally, our network infers the dense correspondences between the depth observation of the object instance and the reconstructed 3D model to jointly estimate the 6D object pose and size. We design an autoencoder that trains on a collection of object models and compute the mean latent embedding for each category to learn the categorical shape priors. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the state of the art. Our code is available at https://github.com/mentian/object-deformnet.
Recently, various methods for 6D pose and shape estimation of objects have been proposed. Typically, these methods evaluate their pose estimation in terms of average precision, and reconstruction quality with chamfer distance. In this work we take a critical look at this predominant evaluation protocol including metrics and datasets. We propose a new set of metrics, contribute new annotations for the Redwood dataset and evaluate state-of-the-art methods in a fair comparison. We find that existing methods do not generalize well to unconstrained orientations, and are actually heavily biased towa…
Rich geometric understanding of the world is an important component of many robotic applications such as planning and manipulation. In this paper, we present a modular pipeline for pose and shape estimation of objects from RGB-D images given their category. The core of our method is a generative shape model, which we integrate with a novel initialization network and a differentiable renderer to enable 6D pose and shape estimation from a single or multiple views. We investigate the use of discretized signed distance fields as an efficient shape representation for fast analysis-by-synthesis opti…

This paper studies the complex task of simultaneous multi-object 3D reconstruction, 6D pose and size estimation from a single-view RGB-D observation. In contrast to instance-level pose estimation, we focus on a more challenging problem where CAD models are not available at inference time. Existing approaches mainly follow a complex multi-stage pipeline which first localizes and detects each object instance in the image and then regresses to either their 3D meshes or 6D poses. These approaches suffer from high-computational cost and low performance in complex multi-object scenarios, where occlu…

Monocular SLAM in deformable scenes will open the way to multiple medical applications like computer-assisted navigation in endoscopy, automatic drug delivery or autonomous robotic surgery. In this paper we propose a novel method to simultaneously track the camera pose and the 3D scene deformation, without any assumption about environment topology or shape. The method uses an illumination-invariant photometric method to track image features and estimates camera motion and deformation combining reprojection error with spatial and temporal regularization of deformations. Our results in simulated…

Articulated objects are pervasive in daily life. However, due to the intrinsic high-DoF structure, the joint states of the articulated objects are hard to be estimated. To model articulated objects, two kinds of shape deformations namely the geometric and the pose deformation should be considered. In this work, we present a novel category-specific parametric representation called Object Model with Articulated Deformations (OMAD) to explicitly model the articulated objects. In OMAD, a category is associated with a linear shape function with shared shape basis and a non-linear joint function. Bo…

Human pose transfer, as a misaligned image generation task, is very challenging. Existing methods cannot effectively utilize the input information, which often fail to preserve the style and shape of hair and clothes. In this paper, we propose an adaptive human pose transfer network with two hierarchical deformation levels. The first level generates human semantic parsing aligned with the target pose, and the second level generates the final textured person image in the target pose with the semantic guidance. To avoid the drawback of vanilla convolution that treats all the pixels as valid info…

Category-level pose estimation is a challenging problem due to intra-class shape variations. Recent methods deform pre-computed shape priors to map the observed point cloud into the normalized object coordinate space and then retrieve the pose via post-processing, i.e., Umeyama's Algorithm. The shortcomings of this two-stage strategy lie in two aspects: 1) The surrogate supervision on the intermediate results can not directly guide the learning of pose, resulting in large pose error after post-processing. 2) The inference speed is limited by the post-processing step. In this paper, to handle t…
Our goal is to capture the pose of neuroscience model organisms, without using any manual supervision, to be able to study how neural circuits orchestrate behaviour. Human pose estimation attains remarkable accuracy when trained on real or simulated datasets consisting of millions of frames. However, for many applications simulated models are unrealistic and real training datasets with comprehensive annotations do not exist. We address this problem with a new sim2real domain transfer method. Our key contribution is the explicit and independent modeling of appearance, shape and poses in an unpa…

Neural shape models can represent complex 3D shapes with a compact latent space. When applied to dynamically deforming shapes such as the human hands, however, they would need to preserve temporal coherence of the deformation as well as the intrinsic identity of the subject. These properties are difficult to regularize with manually designed loss functions. In this paper, we learn a neural deformation model that disentangles the identity-induced shape variations from pose-dependent deformations using implicit neural functions. We perform template-free unsupervised learning on 3D scans without …

We present a novel solution to the garment animation problem through deep learning. Our contribution allows animating any template outfit with arbitrary topology and geometric complexity. Recent works develop models for garment edition, resizing and animation at the same time by leveraging the support body model (encoding garments as body homotopies). This leads to complex engineering solutions that suffer from scalability, applicability and compatibility. By limiting our scope to garment animation only, we are able to propose a simple model that can animate any outfit, independently of its to…
In this paper, we present a method of clothes retargeting; generating the potential poses and deformations of a given 3D clothing template model to fit onto a person in a single RGB image. The problem is fundamentally ill-posed as attaining the ground truth data is impossible, i.e., images of people wearing the different 3D clothing template model at exact same pose. We address this challenge by utilizing large-scale synthetic data generated from physical simulation, allowing us to map 2D dense body pose to 3D clothing deformation. With the simulated data, we propose a semi-supervised learning…

It is difficult to precisely annotate object instances and their semantics in 3D space, and as such, synthetic data are extensively used for these tasks, e.g., category-level 6D object pose and size estimation. However, the easy annotations in synthetic domains bring the downside effect of synthetic-to-real (Sim2Real) domain gap. In this work, we aim to address this issue in the task setting of Sim2Real, unsupervised domain adaptation for category-level 6D object pose and size estimation. We propose a method that is built upon a novel Deep Prior Deformation Network, shortened as DPDN. DPDN lea…

We propose a novel approach to jointly perform 3D shape retrieval and pose estimation from monocular images. In order to make the method robust to real-world image variations, e.g. complex textures and backgrounds, we learn an embedding space from 3D data that only includes the relevant information, namely the shape and pose. Our approach explicitly disentangles a shape vector and a pose vector, which alleviates both pose bias for 3D shape retrieval and categorical bias for pose estimation. We then train a CNN to map the images to this embedding space, and then retrieve the closest 3D shape fro…

Neural implicit surface representations have emerged as a promising paradigm to capture 3D shapes in a continuous and resolution-independent manner. However, adapting them to articulated shapes is non-trivial. Existing approaches learn a backward warp field that maps deformed to canonical points. However, this is problematic since the backward warp field is pose dependent and thus requires large amounts of data to learn. To address this, we introduce SNARF, which combines the advantages of linear blend skinning (LBS) for polygonal meshes with those of neural implicit surfaces by learning a for…

We present a methodology to automatically obtain Pose Space Deformation (PSD) basis for rigged garments through deep learning. Classical approaches rely on Physically Based Simulations (PBS) to animate clothes. These are general solutions that, given a sufficiently fine-grained discretization of space and time, can achieve highly realistic results. However, they are computationally expensive and any scene modification prompts the need of re-simulation. Linear Blend Skinning (LBS) with PSD offers a lightweight alternative to PBS, though, it needs huge volumes of data to learn proper PSD. We pro…

For few-shot learning, it is still a critical challenge to realize photo-realistic face visually dubbing on high-resolution videos. Previous works fail to generate high-fidelity dubbing results. To address the above problem, this paper proposes a Deformation Inpainting Network (DINet) for high-resolution face visually dubbing. Different from previous works relying on multiple up-sample layers to directly generate pixels from latent embeddings, DINet performs spatial deformation on feature maps of reference images to better preserve high-frequency textural details. Specifically, DINet consists …
Locating 3D objects from a single RGB image via Perspective-n-Points (PnP) is a long-standing problem in computer vision. Driven by end-to-end deep learning, recent studies suggest interpreting PnP as a differentiable layer, so that 2D-3D point correspondences can be partly learned by backpropagating the gradient w.r.t. object pose. Yet, learning the entire set of unrestricted 2D-3D points from scratch fails to converge with existing approaches, since the deterministic pose is inherently non-differentiable. In this paper, we propose the EPro-PnP, a probabilistic PnP layer for general end-to-en…

We present Neural Generalized Implicit Functions(Neural-GIF), to animate people in clothing as a function of the body pose. Given a sequence of scans of a subject in various poses, we learn to animate the character for new poses. Existing methods have relied on template-based representations of the human body (or clothing). However such models usually have fixed and limited resolutions, require difficult data pre-processing steps and cannot be used with complex clothing. We draw inspiration from template-based methods, which factorize motion into articulation and non-rigid deformation, but gen…

A complete representation of 3D objects requires characterizing the space of deformations in an interpretable manner, from articulations of a single instance to changes in shape across categories. In this work, we improve on a prior generative model of geometric disentanglement for 3D shapes, wherein the space of object geometry is factorized into rigid orientation, non-rigid pose, and intrinsic shape. The resulting model can be trained from raw 3D shapes, without correspondences, labels, or even rigid alignment, using a combination of classical spectral geometry and probabilistic disentanglem…

In this paper, we present TailorNet, a neural model which predicts clothing deformation in 3D as a function of three factors: pose, shape and style (garment geometry), while retaining wrinkle detail. This goes beyond prior models, which are either specific to one style and shape, or generalize to different shapes producing smooth results, despite being style specific. Our hypothesis is that (even non-linear) combinations of examples smooth out high frequency components such as fine-wrinkles, which makes learning the three factors jointly hard. At the heart of our technique is a decomposition o…
In this work, we tackle the challenging problem of category-level object pose and size estimation from a single depth image. Although previous fully-supervised works have demonstrated promising performance, collecting ground-truth pose labels is generally time-consuming and labor-intensive. Instead, we propose a label-free method that learns to enforce the geometric consistency between category template mesh and observed object point cloud under a self-supervision manner. Specifically, our method consists of three key components: differentiable shape deformation, registration, and rendering. I…

Unsupervised learning of 3D-aware generative adversarial networks (GANs) using only collections of single-view 2D photographs has very recently made much progress. These 3D GANs, however, have not been demonstrated for human bodies and the generated radiance fields of existing frameworks are not directly editable, limiting their applicability in downstream tasks. We propose a solution to these challenges by developing a 3D GAN framework that learns to generate radiance fields of human bodies or faces in a canonical pose and warp them using an explicit deformation field into a desired body pose…
