Three algebraically stabilized finite element schemes for discretizing convection-diffusion-reaction equations are studied on adaptively refined grids. These schemes are the algebraic flux correction (AFC) scheme with Kuzmin limiter, the AFC scheme with BJK limiter, and the recently proposed Monotone Upwind-type Algebraically Stabilized (MUAS) method. Both, conforming closure of the refined grids and grids with hanging vertices are considered. A non-standard algorithmic step becomes necessary before these schemes can be applied on grids with hanging vertices. The assessment of the schemes is performed with respect to the satisfaction of the global discrete maximum principle (DMP), the accuracy, e.g., smearing of layers, and the efficiency in solving the corresponding nonlinear problems.
We present a Scharfetter-Gummel (SG) stabilization scheme for high-order Hybrid Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) approximations of convection-diffusion problems. The scheme is based on a careful choice of the stabilization parameters used to define the numerical flux in the HDG method. We show that, in one dimension, the SG-HDG scheme is equivalent to the Finite Volume method stabilized with the Scharfetter--Gummel on the dual grid, for all orders of HDG schemes.
Numerical moment stabilization of central difference approximations for linear stationary reaction-convection-diffusion equations with applications to stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equations
Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin projection-based reduced-order models (ROMs) of transient partial differential equations are typically obtained by performing a dimension reduction and projection process that is defined at either the spatially continuous or spatially discrete level. In both cases, it is common to add stabilization to the resulting ROM to increase the stability and accuracy of the method; the addition of stabilization is particularly common for advection-dominated systems when the ROM is under-resolved. While these two approaches can be equivalent in certain settings, differing tec…
We develop a stabilized cut finite element method for the stationary convection diffusion problem on a surface embedded in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$. The cut finite element method is based on using an embedding of the surface into a three dimensional mesh consisting of tetrahedra and then using the restriction of the standard piecewise linear continuous elements to a piecewise linear approximation of the surface. The stabilization consists of a standard streamline diffusion stabilization term on the discrete surface and a so called normal gradient stabilization term on the full tetrahedral elements in …
In this paper we analyze a pressure-robust method based on divergence-free mixed finite element methods with continuous interior penalty stabilization. The main goal is to prove an $O(h^{k+1/2})$ error estimate for the $L^2$ norm of the velocity in the convection dominated regime. This bound is pressure robust (the error bound of the velocity does not depend on the pressure) and also convection robust (the constants in the error bounds are independent of the Reynolds number).

In this paper we analyze a lowest order virtual element method for the load classic reaction-convection-diffusion problem and the convection-diffusion spectral problem, where the assumptions on the polygonal meshes allow to consider small edges for the polygons. Under well defined seminorms depending on a suitable stabilization for this geometrical approach, we derive the well posedness of the numerical scheme and error estimates for the load problem, whereas for the spectral problem we derive convergence and error estimates for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. We report numerical tests to …
Algebraically stabilized finite element discretizations of scalar steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction equations often provide accurate approximate solutions satisfying the discrete maximum principle (DMP). However, it was observed that a deterioration of the accuracy and convergence rates may occur for some problems if meshes without local symmetries are used. The paper investigates these phenomena both numerically and analytically and the findings are used to design a new algebraic stabilization called Symmetrized Monotone Upwind-type Algebraically Stabilized (SMUAS) method. It is prov…
A posteriori error estimates for the finite element approximation of the convection-diffusion-reaction equation based on the variational multiscale concept
In this work, we have discretized a system of time-dependent nonlinear convection-diffusion-reaction equations with the virtual element method over the spatial domain and the Euler method for the temporal interval. For the nonlinear fully-discrete scheme, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution with Brouwer's fixed point theorem. To overcome the complexity of solving a nonlinear discrete system, we define an equivalent linear system of equations. A priori error estimate showing optimal order of convergence with respect to $H^1$ semi-norm was derived. Further, to solve the discret…
As a popular stabilization technique, the nonsymmetric interior penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method has significant application value in computational fluid dynamics. In this paper, we study the NIPG method for a typical two-dimensional singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem on a Shishkin mesh. According to the characteristics of the solution, the mesh and numerical scheme, a new composite interpolation is introduced. In fact, this interpolation is composed of a vertices-edges-element interpolation within the layer and a local $L^{2}$-projection outside the layer. On the basis of that, b…
Convection schemes are a large source of error in global weather and climate models, and modern resolutions are often too fine to parameterise convection but are still too coarse to fully resolve it. Recently, numerical solutions of multi-fluid equations have been proposed for a more flexible and consistent treatment of sub-grid scale convection, including net mass transport by convection and non-equilibrium dynamics. The technique involves splitting the atmosphere into multiple fluids. For example, the atmosphere could be divided into buoyant updrafts and stable regions. The fluids interact t…
Discretization of Navier-Stokes' equations using pressure-robust finite element methods is considered for the high Reynolds number regime. To counter oscillations due to dominating convection we add a stabilization based on a bulk term in the form of a residual-based least squares stabilization of the vorticity equation supplemented by a penalty term on (certain components of) the gradient jump over the elements faces. Since the stabilization is based on the vorticity equation, it is independent of the pressure gradients, which makes it pressure-robust. Thus, we prove pressure-independent erro…
A finite difference method is constructed to solve singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems posed on smooth domains. Constraints are imposed on the data so that only regular exponential boundary layers appear in the solution. A domain decomposition method is used, which uses a rectangular grid outside the boundary layer and a Shishkin mesh, aligned to the curvature of the outflow boundary, near the boundary layer. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed numerical algorithm.
We present a Petrov-Gelerkin (PG) method for a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems. There are two main ingredients in our approach. First, we define the norm on the test space as induced by the trial space norm, i.e., the optimal test norm, so that the inf-sup condition can be satisfied uniformly independent of the problem. We show the well-posedness of a class of nonlocal convection-dominated diffusion problems under the optimal test norm with general assumptions on the nonlocal diffusion and convection kernels. Second, following the framework of Cohen et al.~(2012), we …
We introduce a local adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The proposed method is based on a coarse grid and iteratively improves the solution's accuracy by solving local elliptic problems in refined subdomains. For purely diffusion problems, we already proved that this scheme converges under minimal regularity assumptions [A. Abdulle and G.Rosilho de Souza, ESAIM: M2AN, 53(4):1269--1303, 2019]. In this paper, we provide an algorithm for the automatic identification of the local elliptic problems' subdomains employing a flux reconstruction strategy…

We design a physics-aware auto-encoder to specifically reduce the dimensionality of solutions arising from convection-dominated nonlinear physical systems. Although existing nonlinear manifold learning methods seem to be compelling tools to reduce the dimensionality of data characterized by a large Kolmogorov n-width, they typically lack a straightforward mapping from the latent space to the high-dimensional physical space. Moreover, the realized latent variables are often hard to interpret. Therefore, many of these methods are often dismissed in the reduced order modeling of dynamical systems…
