We consider symmetric partial exclusion and inclusion processes in a general graph in contact with reservoirs, where we allow both for edge disorder and well-chosen site disorder. We extend the classical dualities to this context and then we derive new orthogonal polynomial dualities. From the classical dualities, we derive the uniqueness of the non-equilibrium steady state and obtain correlation inequalities. Starting from the orthogonal polynomial dualities, we show universal properties of n-point correlation functions in the non-equilibrium steady state for systems with at most two different reservoir parameters, such as a chain with reservoirs at left and right ends.
For a series of Markov processes we prove stochastic duality relations with duality functions given by orthogonal polynomials. This means that expectations with respect to the original process (which evolves the variable of the orthogonal polynomial) can be studied via expectations with respect to the dual process (which evolves the index of the polynomial). The set of processes include interacting particle systems, such as the exclusion process, the inclusion process and independent random walkers, as well as interacting diffusions and redistribution models of Kipnis-Marchioro-Presutti type. …
We prove a certain duality relation for orthogonal polynomials defined on a finite set. The result is used in a direct proof of the equivalence of two different ways of computing the correlation functions of a discrete orthogonal polynomial ensemble.
We obtain stochastic duality functions for specific Markov processes using representation theory of Lie algebras. The duality functions come from the kernel of a unitary intertwiner between $*$-representations, which provides (generalized) orthogonality relations for the duality functions. In particular, we consider representations of the Heisenberg algebra and $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$. Both cases lead to orthogonal (self-)duality functions in terms of hypergeometric functions for specific interacting particle processes and interacting diffusion processes.
We obtain orthogonal polynomial self-duality functions for multi-species version of the symmetric exclusion process (SEP$(2j)$) and the independent random walker process (IRW) on a finite undirected graph. In each process, we have $n>1$ species of particles. In addition, we allow up to $2j$ particles to occupy each site in the multi-species SEP$(2j)$. The duality functions for the multi-species SEP$(2j)$ and the multi-species IRW come from unitary intertwiners between different $*$-representations of the special linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n+1}$ and the Heisenberg Lie algebra $\mathfrak…
We study fluctuation fields of orthogonal polynomials in the context of particle systems with duality. We thereby obtain a systematic orthogonal decomposition of the fluctuation fields of local functions, where the order of every term can be quantified. This implies a quantitative generalization of the Boltzmann Gibbs principle. In the context of independent random walkers, we complete this program, including also fluctuation fields in non-stationary context (local equilibrium). For other interacting particle systems with duality such as the symmetric exclusion process, similar results can be …
In this paper we derive intertwining relations for a broad class of conservative particle systems both in discrete and continuous setting. Using the language of point process theory, we are able to derive a natural framework in which duality and intertwining can be formulated. We prove falling factorial and orthogonal polynomial intertwining relations in a general setting. These intertwinings unite the previously found classical and orthogonal self-dualities in the context of discrete particle systems and provide new dualities for several interacting systems in the continuum. We also introduce…
We study self-duality for interacting particle systems, where the particles move as continuous time random walkers having either exclusion interaction or inclusion interaction. We show that orthogonal self-dualities arise from unitary symmetries of the Markov generator. For these symmetries we provide two equivalent expressions that are related by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. The first expression is the exponential of an anti Hermitian operator and thus is unitary by inspection; the second expression is factorized into three terms and is proved to be unitary by using generating functi…
Inspired by the works in [1] and [8] we introduce what we call $k$-th-order fluctuation fields and study their scaling limits. This construction is done in the context of particle systems with the property of orthogonal self-duality. This type of duality provides us with a setting in which we are able to interpret these fields as some type of discrete analogue of powers of the well-known density fluctuation field. We show that the weak limit of the $k$-th order field satisfies a recursive martingale problem that formally corresponds to the SPDE associated with the $k$th-power of a generalized …
We present an asymptotic expansion for quaternionic self-adjoint matrix integrals. The Feynman diagrams appearing in the expansion are ordinary ribbon graphs and their non-orientable counterparts. The result exhibits a striking duality between quaternionic self-adjoint and real symmetric matrix integrals. The asymptotic expansions of these integrals are given in terms of summations over topologies of compact surfaces, both orientable and non-orientable, for all genera and an arbitrary positive number of marked points on them. We show that the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) and Gaussian Sym…
A large family of diffusive models of transport that has been considered in the past years admits a transformation into the same model in contact with an equilibrium bath. This mapping holds at the full dynamical level, and is independent of dimension or topology. It provides a good opportunity to discuss questions of time reversal in out of equilibrium contexts. In particular, thanks to the mapping one may define the free-energy in the non-equilibrium states very naturally as the (usual) free energy of the mapped system.
Orthogonal polynomial duality and unitary symmetries of multi--species ASEP$(q,\boldsymbolθ)$ and higher--spin vertex models via $^*$--bialgebra structure of higher rank quantum groups
We study a class of interacting particle systems with asymmetric interaction showing a self-duality property. The class includes the ASEP($q,θ$), asymmetric exclusion process, with a repulsive interaction, allowing up to $θ\in \mathbb{N}$ particles in each site, and the ASIP$(q,θ)$, $θ\in \mathbb{R}^+$, asymmetric inclusion process, that is its attractive counterpart. We extend to the asymmetric setting the investigation of orthogonal duality properties done in [8] for symmetric processes. The analysis leads to multivariate $q-$analogues of Krawtchouk polynomials and Meixner polynomials as ort…
We study moments of characteristic polynomials of truncated Haar distributed matrices from the three classical compact groups O(N), U(N) and Sp(2N). For finite matrix size we calculate the moments in terms of hypergeometric functions of matrix argument and give explicit integral representations highlighting the duality between the moment and the matrix size as well as the duality between the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Asymptotic expansions in strong and weak non-unitarity regimes are obtained. Using the connection to matrix hypergeometric functions, we establish limit theorems for the lo…
Non-equilibrium steady states are subject to intense investigations but still poorly understood. For instance, the derivation of Fourier law in Hamiltonian systems is a problem that still poses several obstacles. In order to investigate non-equilibrium systems, stochastic models of energy-exchange have been introduced and they have been used to identify universal properties of non-equilibrium. In these notes, after a brief review of the problem of anomalous transport in 1-dimensional Hamiltonian systems, some boundary-driven interacting random systems are considered and the "duality approach" …
We extend the duality of Kipnis Marchioro and Presutti to inhomogeneous lattice gas systems where either the components have different degrees of freedom or the rate of interaction depends on the spatial location. Then the dual process is applied to prove local equilibrium in the hydrodynamic limit for some inhomogeneous high dimensional systems andin the nonequilibrium steady state for one dimensional systems with arbitrary inhomogeneity.
We consider consistent particle systems, which include independent random walkers, the symmetric exclusion and inclusion processes, as well as the dual of the KMP model. Consistent systems are such that the distribution obtained by first evolving $n$ particles and then removing a particle at random is the same as the one given by a random removal of a particle at the initial time followed by evolution of the remaining $n-1$ particles. In this paper we discuss two main results. Firstly, we show that, for reversible systems, the property of consistency is equivalent to self-duality, thus obtaini…
Let $X$ be a finite set and $Ω=\{1,...,d\}^{\mathbb{N}}$ be the Bernoulli space. Denote by $σ$ the shift map acting on $Ω$. For a fixed probability $μ$ on $X$ with supp($μ$)$=X$, define $Π(μ,σ)$ as the set of all Borel probabilities $π\in P(X\times Ω)$ such that the $x$-marginal of $π$ is $μ$ and the $y$-marginal of $π$ is $σ$-invariant. We consider a fixed Lipschitz cost function $c: X \times Ω\to \mathbb{R}$ and an associated Ruelle operator. We introduce the concept of Gibbs plan, which is a probability on $X \times Ω$. Moreover, we define entropy, pressure and equilibrium plans. The study …
This paper aims to clarify certain aspects of the relations between birth-death processes, measures solving a Stieltjes moment problem, and sets of parameters defining polynomial sequences that are orthogonal with respect to such a measure. Besides giving an overview of the basic features of these relations, revealed to a large extent by Karlin and McGregor, we investigate a duality concept for birth-death processes introduced by Karlin and McGregor and its interpretation in the context of shell polynomials and the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. This interpretation leads to increased in…
We consider a system of interacting Fisher-Wright diffusions with seed-bank. Individuals live in colonies and are subject to resampling and migration as long as they are active. Each colony has a structured seed-bank into which individuals can retreat to become dormant, suspending their resampling and migration until they become active again. As geographic space labelling the colonies we consider a countable Abelian group $\mathbb{G}$ endowed with the discrete topology. The key example of interest is the Euclidean lattice $\mathbb{G}=\mathbb{Z}^d$. Our goal is to classify the long-time behavio…
Multiple orthogonal polynomials are a generalization of orthogonal polynomials in which the orthogonality is distributed among a number of orthogonality weights. They appear in random matrix theory in the form of special determinantal point processes that are called multiple orthogonal polynomial (MOP) ensembles. The correlation kernel in such an ensemble is expressed in terms of the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem, that is of size (r+1) x (r+1) in the case of r weights. A number of models give rise to a MOP ensemble, and we discuss recent results on models of non-intersecting Brownian m…
