We establish universality and ultra-homogeneity of $(\mathcal{U},u_\mathrm{GH})$, the collection of all compact ultrametric spaces endowed with the so-called Gromov-Hausdorff ultrametric. This result also gives rise to a novel construction of the so-called $R$-Uryoshn universal ultrametric space for each countable subset $R\subset\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$ containing $0$.
In this paper, we give new constructions of Urysohn universal ultrametric spaces. We first characterize a Urysohn universal ultrametric subspace of the space of all continuous functions whose images contain the zero, from a zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space without isolated points into the space of non-negative real numbers equipped with the nearly discrete topology. As a consequence, the whole function space is Urysohn universal, which can be considered as a non-Archimedean analog of Banach--Mazur theorem. As a more application, we prove that the space of all continuous pseudo-ultramet…
In the present paper we investigate the Gromov--Hausdorff distances between a bounded metric space $X$ and so called simplex, i.e., a metric space all whose non-zero distances are the same. In the case when the simplex's cardinality does not exceed the cardinality of $X$, a new formula for this distance is obtained. The latter permits to derive an exact formula for the distance between a simplex and an ultrametric space.
In this paper, we first show that for all four non-negative real numbers, there exists a Cantor ultrametric space whose Hausdorff dimension, packing dimension, upper box dimension, and Assouad dimension are equal to given four numbers, respectively. Next, by constructing topological embeddings of an arbitrary compact metrizable space into the Gromov--Hausdorff space using a direct sum of metrics spaces, we prove that the set of all compact metric spaces possessing prescribed topological dimension, and four dimensions explained above, and the set of all compact ultrametric spaces are path-conne…
In this paper, we investigate compact ultrametric measure spaces which form a subset $\mathcal{U}^w$ of the collection of all metric measure spaces $\mathcal{M}^w$. Similar as for the ultrametric Gromov-Hausdorff distance on the collection of ultrametric spaces $\mathcal{U}$, we define ultrametric versions of two metrics on $\mathcal{U}^w$, namely of Sturm's distance of order $p$ and of the Gromov-Wasserstein distance of order $p$. We study the basic topological and geometric properties of these distances as well as their relation and derive for $p=\infty$ a polynomial time algorithm for their…
The Gromov-Hausdorff distance ($d_\mathrm{GH}$) provides a natural way of quantifying the dissimilarity between two given metric spaces. It is known that computing $d_\mathrm{GH}$ between two finite metric spaces is NP-hard, even in the case of finite ultrametric spaces which are highly structured metric spaces in the sense that they satisfy the so-called \emph{strong triangle inequality}. Ultrametric spaces naturally arise in many applications such as hierarchical clustering, phylogenetics, genomics, and even linguistics. By exploiting the special structures of ultrametric spaces, (1) we iden…
The Gromov--Hausdorff distance measures the difference in shape between compact metric spaces. While even approximating the distance up to any practical factor poses an NP-hard problem, its relaxations have proven useful for the problems in geometric data analysis, including on point clouds, manifolds, and graphs. We investigate the modified Gromov--Hausdorff distance, a relaxation of the standard distance that retains many of its theoretical properties, which includes their topological equivalence on a rich set of families of metric spaces. We show that the two distances are Lipschitz-equival…
For each given $p\in[1,\infty]$ we investigate certain sub-family $\mathcal{M}_p$ of the collection of all compact metric spaces $\mathcal{M}$ which are characterized by the satisfaction of a strengthened form of the triangle inequality which encompasses, for example, the strong triangle inequality satisfied by ultrametric spaces. We identify a one parameter family of Gromov-Hausdorff like distances $\{d_{\mathrm{GH}}^{\scriptscriptstyle{(p)}}\}_{p\in[1,\infty]}$ on $\mathcal{M}_p$ and study geometric and topological properties of these distances as well as the stability of certain canonical p…
Gromov hyperbolicity of a metric space measures the distance of the space from a perfect tree-like structure. The measure has a "worst-case" aspect to it, in the sense that it detects a region in the space which sees the maximum deviation from tree-like structure. In this article we introduce an "average-case" version of Gromov hyperbolicity, which detects whether the "most of the space", with respect to a given probability measure, looks like a tree. The main result of the paper is that if this average hyperbolicity is small, then the space can be approximately embedded in a tree. The proof u…
We prove a new version of isoperimetric inequality: Given a positive real $m$, a Banach space $B$, a closed subset $Y$ of metric space $X$ and a continuous map $f:Y \rightarrow B$ with $f(Y)$ compact $$\inf_FHC_{m+1}(F(X))\leq c(m)HC_m(f(Y))^{\frac{m+1}{m}},$$ where $HC_m$ denotes the $m$-dimensional Hausdorff content, the infimum is taken over the set of all continuous maps $F:X\longrightarrow B$ such that $F(y)=f(y)$ for all $y\in Y$, and $c(m)$ depends only on $m$. Moreover, one can find $F$ with a nearly minimal $HC_{m+1}$ such that its image lies in the $C(m)HC_m(f(Y))^{1\over m}$-neighbo…
