We introduce a model of the set of all Polish (=separable complete metric) spaces: the cone $\cal R$ of distance matrices, and consider geometric and probabilistic problems connected with this object. The notion of the universal distance matrix is defined and we proved that the set of such matrices is everywhere dense $G_δ$ set in weak topology in the cone $\cal R$.
Universality of distance matrix is the necessary and sufficient condition on the distance matrix of the countable everywhere dense set of so called universal Urysohn space which he had defined in 1924 in his last paper. This means that Urysohn space is generic in the set of all Polish spaces. Then we consider metric spaces with measures (metric triples) and define a complete invariant: its - matrix distribution. We give an intrinsic characterization of the set of matrix distributions, and using the ergodic theorem, give a new proof of Gromov's ``reconstruction theorem'. A natural construction of a wide class of measures on the cone $\cal R$ is given and for these we show that {\it with probability one a random Polish space is again the Urysohn space}. There is a close connection between these questions, metric classification of measurable functions of several arguments, and classification of the actions of the infinite symmetric group [V1,V2].
WWe define the notion of a random metric space and prove that with probability one such a space is isometricto the Urysohn universal metric space. The main technique is the study of universal and random distance matrices; we relate the properties of metric (in particulary universal) space to the properties of distance matrices. We show the link between those questions and classification of the Polish spaces with measure (Gromov or metric triples) and with the problem about S_{\infty}-invariant measures in the space of symmetric matrices. One of the new effects -exsitence in Urysohn space so ca…
In this paper we study the cokernels of various random integral matrix models, including random symmetric, random skew-symmetric, and random Laplacian matrices. We provide a systematic method to establish universality under very general randomness assumption. Our highlights include both local and global universality of the cokernel statistics of all these models. In particular, we find the probability that a sandpile group of an Erdos-Renyi random graph is cyclic, answering a question of Lorenzini from 2008.
This paper addresses problems in functional metric geometry that arise in the study of data such as signals recorded on geometric domains or on the nodes of weighted networks. Datasets comprising such objects arise in many domains of scientific and practical interest. For example, $f$ could represent a functional magnetic resonance image, or the nodes of a social network labeled with attributes or preferences, where the underlying metric structure is given by the shortest path distance, commute distance, or diffusion distance. Formally, these may be viewed as functions defined on metric spaces…
We describe the resolvent approach for the rigorous study of the mescoscopic regime of Hermitian matrix spectra. We present results reflecting the universal behavior of the smoothed density of eigenvalue distribution of large random matrices
Motivated by the Central Limit Theorem, in this paper, we study both universal and non-universal simulations of random variables with an arbitrary target distribution $Q_{Y}$ by general mappings, not limited to linear ones (as in the Central Limit Theorem). We derive the fastest convergence rate of the approximation errors for such problems. Interestingly, we show that for discontinuous or absolutely continuous $P_{X}$, the approximation error for the universal simulation is almost as small as that for the non-universal one; and moreover, for both universal and non-universal simulations, the a…
Consider $(X_{i}(t))$ solving a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations interacting through a random matrix $\mathbf J = (J_{ij})$ with independent (not necessarily identically distributed) random coefficients. We show that the trajectories of averaged observables of $(X_i(t))$, initialized from some $μ$ independent of $\mathbf J$, are universal, i.e., only depend on the choice of the distribution $\mathbf{J}$ through its first and second moments (assuming e.g., sub-exponential tails). We take a general combinatorial approach to proving universality for dynamical systems with random co…
Over binary input channels, uniform distribution is a universal prior, in the sense that it allows to maximize the worst case mutual information over all binary input channels, ensuring at least 94.2% of the capacity. In this paper, we address a similar question, but with respect to a universal generalized linear decoder. We look for the best collection of finitely many a posteriori metrics, to maximize the worst case mismatched mutual information achieved by decoding with these metrics (instead of an optimal decoder such as the Maximum Likelihood (ML) tuned to the true channel). It is shown t…

The universality phenomenon asserts that the distribution of the eigenvalues of random matrix with i.i.d. zero mean, unit variance entries does not depend on the underlying structure of the random entries. For example, a plot of the eigenvalues of a random sign matrix, where each entry is +1 or -1 with equal probability, looks the same as an analogous plot of the eigenvalues of a random matrix where each entry is complex Gaussian with zero mean and unit variance. In the current paper, we prove a universality result for sparse random n by n matrices where each entry is nonzero with probability …
We prove the universal asymptotically almost sure non-singularity of general Ginibre and Wigner ensembles of random matrices when the distribution of the entries are independent but not necessarily identically distributed and may depend on the size of the matrix. These models include adjacency matrices of random graphs and also sparse, generalized, universal and banded random matrices. We find universal rates of convergence and precise estimates for the probability of singularity which depend only on the size of the biggest jump of the distribution functions governing the entries of the matrix…
We show that the Dyson Brownian Motion exhibits local universality after a very short time assuming that local rigidity and level repulsion hold. These conditions are verified, hence bulk spectral universality is proven, for a large class of Wigner-like matrices, including deformed Wigner ensembles and ensembles with non-stochastic variance matrices whose limiting densities differ from the Wigner semicircle law.
We consider diffraction at random point scatterers on general discrete point sets in $\R^ν$, restricted to a finite volume. We allow for random amplitudes and random dislocations of the scatterers. We investigate the speed of convergence of the random scattering measures applied to an observable towards its mean, when the finite volume tends to infinity. We give an explicit universal large deviation upper bound that is exponential in the number of scatterers. The rate is given in terms of a universal function that depends on the point set only through the minimal distance between points, and o…
In this paper, we present a universal scheme for transforming an arbitrary algorithm for biased 2-face coins to generate random bits from the general source of an m-sided die, hence enabling the application of existing algorithms to general sources. In addition, we study approaches of efficiently generating a prescribed number of random bits from an arbitrary biased coin. This contrasts with most existing works, which typically assume that the number of coin tosses is fixed, and they generate a variable number of random bits.
We consider the adjacency matrix of the ensemble of Erdős-Rényi random graphs which consists of graphs on $N$ vertices in which each edge occurs independently with probability $p$. We prove that in the regime $pN \gg 1$ these matrices exhibit bulk universality in the sense that both the averaged $n$-point correlation functions and distribution of a single eigenvalue gap coincide with those of the GOE. Our methods extend to a class of random matrices which includes sparse ensembles whose entries have different variances.
We study multiplicative statistics for the eigenvalues of unitarily-invariant Hermitian random matrix models. We consider one-cut regular polynomial potentials and a large class of multiplicative statistics. We show that in the large matrix limit several associated quantities converge to limits which are universal in both the potential and the family of multiplicative statistics considered. In turn, such universal limits are described by the integro-differential Painlevé II equation, and in particular they connect the random matrix models considered with the narrow wedge solution to the KPZ eq…
Universality of local eigenvalue statistics is one of the most striking phenomena of Random Matrix Theory, that also accounts for a lot of the attention that the field has attracted over the past 15 years. In this paper we focus on the empirical spacing distribution and its Kolmogorov distance from the universal limit. We describe new results, some analytical, some numerical, that are contained in [27]. A large part of the paper is devoted to explain basic definitions and facts of Random Matrix Theory, culminating in a sketch of the proof of a weak version of convergence for the empirical spac…
Consider random matrices $A$, of dimension $m\times (m+n)$, drawn from an ensemble with probability density $f(\rmtr AA^\dagger)$, with $f(x)$ a given appropriate function. Break $A = (B,X)$ into an $m\times m$ block $B$ and the complementary $m\times n$ block $X$, and define the random matrix $Z=B^{-1}X$. We calculate the probability density function $P(Z)$ of the random matrix $Z$ and find that it is a universal function, independent of $f(x)$. The universal probability distribution $P(Z)$ is a spherically symmetric matrix-variate $t$-distribution. Universality of $P(Z)$ is, essentially, a c…
Higher-order spacing ratios are investigated analytically using a Wigner-like surmise for Gaussian ensembles of random matrices. For $k$-th order spacing ratio $(r^{(k)}$, $k>1)$ the matrix of dimension $2k+1$ is considered. A universal scaling relation for this ratio, known from earlier numerical studies, is proved in the asymptotic limits of $r^{(k)}\rightarrow0$ and $r^{(k)}\rightarrow \infty$.
