We study dissipative translationally invariant free-fermionic theories with quadratic Liouvillians. Using a Lie-algebraic approach, we solve the Lindblad equation and find the density matrix at all times for arbitrary time dependence of the Liouvillian. We then investigate the Liouvillian spectral properties and derive a generic criterion for the closure of the dissipative gap, which is believed to be linked with nonequilibrium dissipative phase transitions. We illustrate our findings with a few exotic examples. Particularly, we show the presence of gapless modes with a linear spectrum for fermions with long-range hopping, which might be related to nonunitary conformal field theories. The predicted effects can be probed in experiments with ultracold atomic and quantum-optical systems using currently available experimental facilities.
We recently showed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 220602 (2018)] that the average bipartite entanglement entropy of all energy eigenstates of the quantum Ising chain exhibits a universal (for translationally invariant quadratic fermionic models) leading term that scales linearly with the subsystem's volume, while in the thermodynamic limit the first subleading correction does not vanish at the critical field (it only depends on the ratio $f$ between the volume of the subsystem and volume of the system) and vanishes otherwise. Here we show, analytically for bounds and numerically for averages, that the…
We present a fermionic description of non-equilibrium multi-level systems. Our approach uses the Keldysh path integral formalism and allows us to take into account periodic drives, as well as dissipative channels. The technique is based on the Majorana fermion representation of spin-1/2 models which follows earlier applications in the context of spin and Kondo systems. We apply this formalism to problems of increasing complexity: a dissipative two-level system, a driven-dissipative multi-level atom, and a generalized Dicke model describing many multi-level atoms coupled to a single cavity. We …
Fermionic linear optics is a limited form of quantum computation which is known to be efficiently simulable on a classical computer. We revisit and extend this result by enlarging the set of available computational gates: in addition to unitaries and measurements, we allow dissipative evolution governed by a Markovian master equation with linear Lindblad operators. We show that this more general form of fermionic computation is also simulable efficiently by classical means. Given a system of $N$ fermionic modes, our algorithm simulates any such gate in time $O(N^3)$ while a single-mode measure…
We study abrupt changes in the dynamics and/or steady state of fermionic dissipative systems produced by small changes of the system parameters. Specifically, we consider open fermionic systems whose dynamics is described by master equations that are quadratic (and, under certain conditions, quartic) in creation and annihilation operators. We analyze both phase transitions in steady state, as well as "dynamical transitions". The latter are characterized by abrupt changes in the rate at which the system asymptotically approaches the steady state. We illustrate our general findings with relevant…
We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations and a nonequilibrium phase transition of fermionic superfluids via a sudden switch-on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate a change in particle number. We find that a sudden switch-on of dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by a chirped phase rotation as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a nonequilibrium dynamical pha…
In this article, we investigate the dissipative dynamics of a Fermi gas trapped in a three-site optical lattice exposed to a fermionic environment. The lattice sites admit at most one spin-up and one spin-down particle at a time and its interaction with the fermionic environment cause particles to either be trapped by or expelled from it. It is then shown that apart from each lattice site being populated by at least one particle, spin exchange is observed, which allows the possibility for the system to be used to encrypt information via quantum cryptography. Furthermore, we also observe entang…
We discuss a notion of quantum critical exponents in open quantum many-body systems driven by quantum noise. We show that in translationally invariant quantum lattice models undergoing quasi-local Markovian dissipative processes, mixed states emerge as stationary points that show scaling laws for the divergence of correlation lengths giving rise to well-defined critical exponents. The main new technical tool developed here is a complete description of steady states of free bosonic or fermionic translationally invariant systems driven by quantum noise: This approach allows to express all correl…
We investigate the power of quantum systems for the simulation of Hamiltonian time evolutions on a cubic lattice under the constraint of translational invariance. Given a set of translationally invariant local Hamiltonians and short range interactions we determine time evolutions which can and those that can not be simulated. Whereas for general spin systems no finite universal set of generating interactions is shown to exist, universality turns out to be generic for quadratic bosonic and fermionic nearest-neighbor interactions when supplemented by all translationally invariant on-site Hamilto…
We generalize the theory of flow equations to open quantum systems focusing on Lindblad master equations. We introduce and discuss three different generators of the flow that transform a linear non-Hermitian operator into a diagonal one. We first test our dissipative flow equations on a generic matrix and on a physical problem with a driven-dissipative single fermionic mode. We then move to problems with many fermionic modes and discuss the interplay between coherent (disordered) dynamics and localized losses. Our method can also be applied to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.
The existence of bistability in quantum optical systems remains a intensely debated open question beyond the mean-field approximation. Quantum fluctuations are finite-size corrections to the mean-field approximation used because the full exact solution is unobtainable. Usually, quantum fluctuations destroy the bistability present on the mean-field level. Here, by identifying and using exact modulated semi-local dynamical symmetries in a certain quantum optical models of driven-dissipative fermionic chains we exactly prove bistability in precisely the quantum fluctuations. Surprisingly, rather …
Interactions between particles are usually a resource for quantum computing, making quantum many-body systems intractable by any known classical algorithm. In contrast, noise is typically considered as being inimical to quantum many-body correlations, ultimately leading the system to a classically tractable state. This work shows that noise represented by two-body processes, such as pair loss, plays the same role as many-body interactions and makes otherwise classically simulable systems universal for quantum computing. We analyze such processes in detail and establish a complexity transition …
The driven-dissipative many-body problem remains one of the most challenging unsolved problems in quantum mechanics. The advent of quantum computers may provide a unique platform for efficiently simulating such driven-dissipative systems. But there are many choices for how one can engineer the reservoir. One can simply employ ancilla qubits to act as a reservoir and then digitally simulate them via algorithmic cooling. A more attractive approach, which allows one to simulate an infinite reservoir, is to integrate out the bath degrees of freedom and describe the driven-dissipative system via a …
We investigate the dynamics of the fermionic logarithmic negativity in a free-fermion chain with a localized loss, which acts as a dissipative impurity. The chain is initially prepared in a generic Fermi sea. In the standard hydrodynamic limit of large subsystems and long times, with their ratio fixed, the negativity between two subsystems is described by a simple formula, which depends only on the effective absorption coefficient of the impurity. The negativity grows linearly at short times, then saturating to a volume-law scaling. Physically, this reflects the continuous production with time…
Protecting quantum information from decoherence due to environmental noise is vital for fault-tolerant quantum computation. To this end, standard quantum error correction employs parallel projective measurements of individual particles, which makes the system extremely complicated. Here we propose measurement-free topological protection in two dimension without any selective addressing of individual particles. We make use of engineered dissipative dynamics and feedback operations to reduce the entropy generated by decoherence in such a way that quantum information is topologically protected. W…
We discuss the systematic engineering of quasicrystals in open quantum systems where quasiperiodicity is introduced through purely dissipative processes. While the resulting short-time dynamics is governed by non-Hermitian variants of the Aubry-Andre-Harper model, we demonstrate how phases and phase transitions pertaining to the non-Hermitian quasicrystals fundamentally change the long-time, steady-state-approaching dynamics under the Lindblad master equation. Our schemes are based on an exact mapping between the eigenspectrum of the Liouvillian superoperator with that of the non-Hermitian Ham…
In this work we present a method for generating a fermionic encoding tailored to a set of target fermionic operators and to a target hardware connectivity. Our method uses brute force search, over the space of all encodings which map from Majorana monomials to Pauli operators, to find an encoding which optimizes a target cost function. In contrast to earlier works in this direction, our method searches over an extremely broad class of encodings which subsumes all known second quantized encodings that constitute algebra homomorphisms. In order to search over this class, we give a clear mathemat…
We study the mean Uhlmann curvature in fermionic systems undergoing a dissipative driven phase transition. We consider a paradigmatic class of lattice fermion systems in non-equilibrium steady-state of an open system with local reservoirs, which are characterised by a Gaussian fermionic steady state. In the thermodynamical limit, in systems with translational invariance we show that a singular behaviour of the Uhlmann curvature represents a sufficient criterion for criticalities, in the sense of diverging correlation length, and it is not otherwise sensitive to the closure of the Liouvillian d…

This is the second part of a work in which we show how to solve a large class of Lindblad master equations for non-interacting particles on $L$ sites. Here we concentrate on fermionic particles. In parallel to part I for bosons, but with important differences, we show how to reduce the problem to diagonalizing an $L \times L$ non-Hermitian matrix which, for boundary dissipative driving of a uniform chain, is a tridiagonal bordered Toeplitz matrix. In this way, both for fermionic and spin systems alike, we can obtain analytical expressions for the normal master modes and their relaxation rates …
We analyze a general method for the dissipative preparation and stabilization of volume-law entangled states of fermionic and qubit lattice systems in 1D (and higher dimensions for fermions). Our approach requires minimal resources: nearest-neighbour Hamiltonian interactions that obey a suitable chiral symmetry, and the realization of just a single, spatially-localized dissipative pairing interaction. In the case of a qubit array, the dissipative model we study is not integrable and maps to an interacting fermionic problem. Nonetheless, we analytically show the existence of a unique pure entan…
We discuss the dissipative preparation of p-wave superconductors in number-conserving one-dimensional fermionic systems. We focus on two setups: the first one entails a single wire coupled to a bath, whereas in the second one the environment is connected to a two-leg ladder. Both settings lead to stationary states which feature the bulk properties of a p-wave superconductor, identified in this number-conserving setting through the long-distance behavior of the proper p-wave correlations. The two schemes differ in the fact that the steady state of the single wire is not characterized by topolog…
We explore the topological properties of non-Hermitian nodal-link semimetals with dissipative cold atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We construct a two-band continuum model in three dimensions with a spin-dependent gain and loss, where the exceptional points in the energy spectrum can comprise a double Hopf link. The topology of the bulk band is characterized by a winding number defined for a one-dimensional loop in the momentum space and a topological transition of the nodal structures emerges as the change of the non-Hermiticity strength. A non-Bloch theory is built to describe t…
We study the effects of dissipative boundaries in many-body systems at continuous quantum transitions, when the parameters of the Hamiltonian driving the unitary dynamics are close to their critical values. As paradigmatic models, we consider fermionic wires subject to dissipative interactions at the boundaries, associated with pumping or loss of particles. They are induced by couplings with a Markovian baths, so that the evolution of the system density matrix can be described by a Lindblad master equation. We study the quantum evolution arising from variations of the Hamiltonian and dissipati…
We extend the time-dependent variational principle to the setting of dissipative dynamics. This provides a locally optimal (in time) approximation to the dynamics of any Lindblad equation within a given variational manifold of mixed states. In contrast to the pure-state setting there is no canonical information geometry for mixed states and this leads to a family of possible trajectories --- one for each information metric. We focus on the case of the operationally motivated family of monotone riemannian metrics and show further, that in the particular case where the variational manifold is gi…
We provide a rigorous and asymptotically exact expression of the mutual information of translationally invariant free fermionic lattice systems in a Gibbs state. In order to arrive at this result, we introduce a novel frameworkfor computing determinants of Toeplitz operators with smooth symbols, and for treating Toeplitz matrices with system size dependent entries. The asymptotically exact mutual information for a partition of the one-dimensional lattice satisfies an area law, with a prefactor which we compute explicitly. As examples, we discuss the fermionic XX model in one dimension and free…
The dynamics of Markovian open quantum systems are described by Lindblad master equations. For fermionic and bosonic systems that are quasi-free, i.e., with Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the ladder operators and Lindblad operators that are linear in the ladder operators, we derive the equation of motion for the covariance matrix. This determines the evolution of Gaussian initial states and the steady states, which are also Gaussian. Using ladder super-operators (a.k.a. third quantization), we show how the Liouvillian can be transformed to a many-body Jordan normal form which also reveals …
We consider a class of either fermionic or bosonic noninteracting open quantum chains driven by dissipative interactions at the boundaries and study the interplay of coherent transport and dissipative processes, such as bulk dephasing and diffusion. Starting from the microscopic formulation, we show that the dynamics on large scales can be described in terms of fluctuating hydrodynamics. This is an important simplification as it allows us to apply the methods of macroscopic fluctuation theory to compute the large deviation (LD) statistics of time-integrated currents. In particular, this permit…

We study the quantum dynamics of many-body systems, in the presence of dissipation due to the interaction with the environment, under Kibble-Zurek (KZ) protocols in which one Hamiltonian parameter is slowly, and linearly in time, driven across the critical value of a zero-temperature quantum transition. In particular we address whether, and under which conditions, open quantum systems can develop a universal dynamic scaling regime similar to that emerging in closed systems. We focus on a class of dissipative mechanisms whose dynamics can be reliably described through a Lindblad master equation…
We study the temporal evolution of the mutual information (MI) in a one-dimensional Kitaev chain, coupled to a fermionic Markovian bath, subsequent to a global quench of the chemical potential. In the unitary case, the MI (or equivalently the bipartite entanglement entropy) saturates to a steady-state value (obeying a volume law) following a ballistic growth. On the contrary, we establish that in the dissipative case the MI is exponentially damped both during the initial ballistic growth as well as in the approach to the steady state. We observe that even in a dissipative system, postquench in…
The construction of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, to which isolated integrable quantum many-body systems relax after a quantum quench, is based upon the principle of maximum entropy. In contrast, there are no universal and model-independent laws that govern the relaxation dynamics and stationary states of open quantum systems, which are subjected to Markovian drive and dissipation. Yet, as we show, relaxation of driven-dissipative systems after a quantum quench can, in fact, be determined by a maximum entropy ensemble, if the Liouvillian that generates the dynamics of the system has parity-t…
It is argued that the so-called holographic principle will obstruct attempts to produce physically realistic models for the unification of general relativity with quantum mechanics, unless determinism in the latter is restored. The notion of time in GR is so different from the usual one in elementary particle physics that we believe that certain versions of hidden variable theories can -- and must -- be revived. A completely natural procedure is proposed, in which the dissipation of information plays an essential role. Unlike earlier attempts, it allows us to use strictly continuous and differ…
Many-body physics is one very well suited field for testing quantum algorithms and for finding working heuristics on present quantum computers. We have investigated the non-equilibrium dynamics of one- and two-electron systems, which are coupled to an environment that introduces decoherence and dissipation. In our approach, the electronic system is represented in the framework of a two-site Hubbard model while the environment is modelled by a spin bath. To simulate the non-equilibrium population probabilities of the different states on a quantum computer we have encoded the electronic states a…
