Interactions between particles are usually a resource for quantum computing, making quantum many-body systems intractable by any known classical algorithm. In contrast, noise is typically considered as being inimical to quantum many-body correlations, ultimately leading the system to a classically tractable state. This work shows that noise represented by two-body processes, such as pair loss, plays the same role as many-body interactions and makes otherwise classically simulable systems universal for quantum computing. We analyze such processes in detail and establish a complexity transition between simulable and nonsimulable systems as a function of a tuning parameter. We determine important classes of simulable and nonsimulable two-body dissipation. Finally, we show how using resonant dissipation in cold atoms can enhance the performance of two-qubit gates.
We present a fermionic description of non-equilibrium multi-level systems. Our approach uses the Keldysh path integral formalism and allows us to take into account periodic drives, as well as dissipative channels. The technique is based on the Majorana fermion representation of spin-1/2 models which follows earlier applications in the context of spin and Kondo systems. We apply this formalism to problems of increasing complexity: a dissipative two-level system, a driven-dissipative multi-level atom, and a generalized Dicke model describing many multi-level atoms coupled to a single cavity. We …
We study dissipative translationally invariant free-fermionic theories with quadratic Liouvillians. Using a Lie-algebraic approach, we solve the Lindblad equation and find the density matrix at all times for arbitrary time dependence of the Liouvillian. We then investigate the Liouvillian spectral properties and derive a generic criterion for the closure of the dissipative gap, which is believed to be linked with nonequilibrium dissipative phase transitions. We illustrate our findings with a few exotic examples. Particularly, we show the presence of gapless modes with a linear spectrum for fer…
Fermionic linear optics is a limited form of quantum computation which is known to be efficiently simulable on a classical computer. We revisit and extend this result by enlarging the set of available computational gates: in addition to unitaries and measurements, we allow dissipative evolution governed by a Markovian master equation with linear Lindblad operators. We show that this more general form of fermionic computation is also simulable efficiently by classical means. Given a system of $N$ fermionic modes, our algorithm simulates any such gate in time $O(N^3)$ while a single-mode measure…
We study abrupt changes in the dynamics and/or steady state of fermionic dissipative systems produced by small changes of the system parameters. Specifically, we consider open fermionic systems whose dynamics is described by master equations that are quadratic (and, under certain conditions, quartic) in creation and annihilation operators. We analyze both phase transitions in steady state, as well as "dynamical transitions". The latter are characterized by abrupt changes in the rate at which the system asymptotically approaches the steady state. We illustrate our general findings with relevant…
The existence of bistability in quantum optical systems remains a intensely debated open question beyond the mean-field approximation. Quantum fluctuations are finite-size corrections to the mean-field approximation used because the full exact solution is unobtainable. Usually, quantum fluctuations destroy the bistability present on the mean-field level. Here, by identifying and using exact modulated semi-local dynamical symmetries in a certain quantum optical models of driven-dissipative fermionic chains we exactly prove bistability in precisely the quantum fluctuations. Surprisingly, rather …
The driven-dissipative many-body problem remains one of the most challenging unsolved problems in quantum mechanics. The advent of quantum computers may provide a unique platform for efficiently simulating such driven-dissipative systems. But there are many choices for how one can engineer the reservoir. One can simply employ ancilla qubits to act as a reservoir and then digitally simulate them via algorithmic cooling. A more attractive approach, which allows one to simulate an infinite reservoir, is to integrate out the bath degrees of freedom and describe the driven-dissipative system via a …
We generalize the theory of flow equations to open quantum systems focusing on Lindblad master equations. We introduce and discuss three different generators of the flow that transform a linear non-Hermitian operator into a diagonal one. We first test our dissipative flow equations on a generic matrix and on a physical problem with a driven-dissipative single fermionic mode. We then move to problems with many fermionic modes and discuss the interplay between coherent (disordered) dynamics and localized losses. Our method can also be applied to non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.
We predict a new mechanism to induce collective excitations and a nonequilibrium phase transition of fermionic superfluids via a sudden switch-on of two-body loss, for which we extend the BCS theory to fully incorporate a change in particle number. We find that a sudden switch-on of dissipation induces an amplitude oscillation of the superfluid order parameter accompanied by a chirped phase rotation as a consequence of particle loss. We demonstrate that when dissipation is introduced to one of the two superfluids coupled via a Josephson junction, it gives rise to a nonequilibrium dynamical pha…
We investigate the dynamics of the fermionic logarithmic negativity in a free-fermion chain with a localized loss, which acts as a dissipative impurity. The chain is initially prepared in a generic Fermi sea. In the standard hydrodynamic limit of large subsystems and long times, with their ratio fixed, the negativity between two subsystems is described by a simple formula, which depends only on the effective absorption coefficient of the impurity. The negativity grows linearly at short times, then saturating to a volume-law scaling. Physically, this reflects the continuous production with time…
In this article, we investigate the dissipative dynamics of a Fermi gas trapped in a three-site optical lattice exposed to a fermionic environment. The lattice sites admit at most one spin-up and one spin-down particle at a time and its interaction with the fermionic environment cause particles to either be trapped by or expelled from it. It is then shown that apart from each lattice site being populated by at least one particle, spin exchange is observed, which allows the possibility for the system to be used to encrypt information via quantum cryptography. Furthermore, we also observe entang…
This is the second part of a work in which we show how to solve a large class of Lindblad master equations for non-interacting particles on $L$ sites. Here we concentrate on fermionic particles. In parallel to part I for bosons, but with important differences, we show how to reduce the problem to diagonalizing an $L \times L$ non-Hermitian matrix which, for boundary dissipative driving of a uniform chain, is a tridiagonal bordered Toeplitz matrix. In this way, both for fermionic and spin systems alike, we can obtain analytical expressions for the normal master modes and their relaxation rates …
We study the mean Uhlmann curvature in fermionic systems undergoing a dissipative driven phase transition. We consider a paradigmatic class of lattice fermion systems in non-equilibrium steady-state of an open system with local reservoirs, which are characterised by a Gaussian fermionic steady state. In the thermodynamical limit, in systems with translational invariance we show that a singular behaviour of the Uhlmann curvature represents a sufficient criterion for criticalities, in the sense of diverging correlation length, and it is not otherwise sensitive to the closure of the Liouvillian d…
This paper considers the extension of the non-Markovian stochastic approach for quantum open systems strongly coupled to a fermionic bath, to the models in which the system operators commute with the fermion bath. This technique can also be a useful tool for studying open quantum systems coupled to a spin-chain environment, which can be further transformed into an effective fermionic bath. We derive an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation (SSE), called fermionic quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation, from the first principle by using the fermionic coherent state representation. The reduced d…
An open quantum walk formalism for dissipative quantum computing is presented. The approach is illustrated with the examples of the Toffoli gate and the Quantum Fourier Transform for 3 and 4 qubits. It is shown that the algorithms based on the open quantum walk formalism are more efficient than the canonical dissipative quantum computing approach. In particular, the open quantum walks can be designed to converge faster to the desired steady state and to increase the probability of detection of the outcome of the computation.
We analyze a general method for the dissipative preparation and stabilization of volume-law entangled states of fermionic and qubit lattice systems in 1D (and higher dimensions for fermions). Our approach requires minimal resources: nearest-neighbour Hamiltonian interactions that obey a suitable chiral symmetry, and the realization of just a single, spatially-localized dissipative pairing interaction. In the case of a qubit array, the dissipative model we study is not integrable and maps to an interacting fermionic problem. Nonetheless, we analytically show the existence of a unique pure entan…
We study photonic signatures of symmetry broken and topological phases in a driven, dissipative circuit QED realization of spin-1/2 chains. Specifically, we consider the transverse-field XY model and a dual model with 3-spin interactions. The former has a ferromagnetic and a paramagnetic phase, while the latter features, in addition, a symmetry protected topological phase. Using the method of third quantization, we calculate the non-equilibrium steady-state of the open spin chains for arbitrary system sizes and temperatures. We find that the bi-local correlation function of the spins at both e…
We discuss the systematic engineering of quasicrystals in open quantum systems where quasiperiodicity is introduced through purely dissipative processes. While the resulting short-time dynamics is governed by non-Hermitian variants of the Aubry-Andre-Harper model, we demonstrate how phases and phase transitions pertaining to the non-Hermitian quasicrystals fundamentally change the long-time, steady-state-approaching dynamics under the Lindblad master equation. Our schemes are based on an exact mapping between the eigenspectrum of the Liouvillian superoperator with that of the non-Hermitian Ham…
We discuss the dissipative preparation of p-wave superconductors in number-conserving one-dimensional fermionic systems. We focus on two setups: the first one entails a single wire coupled to a bath, whereas in the second one the environment is connected to a two-leg ladder. Both settings lead to stationary states which feature the bulk properties of a p-wave superconductor, identified in this number-conserving setting through the long-distance behavior of the proper p-wave correlations. The two schemes differ in the fact that the steady state of the single wire is not characterized by topolog…
In quantum magnetism, the virtual exchange of particles mediates an interaction between spins. Here, we show that an inelastic Hubbard interaction fundamentally alters the magnetism of the Hubbard model due to dissipation in spin-exchange processes, leading to sign reversal of magnetic correlations in dissipative quantum dynamics. This mechanism is applicable to both fermionic and bosonic Mott insulators, and can naturally be realized with ultracold atoms undergoing two-body inelastic collisions. The dynamical reversal of magnetic correlations can be detected by using a double-well optical lat…
Reservoir engineering is a powerful tool for the robust generation of quantum states or transport properties. Using both a weak-coupling quantum master equation and the exact solution, we show that directional transport of electrons through a double quantum dot can be achieved through an appropriately designed electronic environment. Directionality is attained through the interference of coherent and dissipative coupling. The relative phase is tuned with an external magnetic field, such that directionality can be reversed, as well as turned on and off dynamically. Our work introduces fermionic…
We propose a dissipative method for the preparation of many-body steady entangled states in spin and fermionic chains. The scheme is accomplished by means of an engineered set of Lindbladians acting over the eigenmodes of the system, whose spectrum is assumed to be resolvable. We apply this idea to prepare a particular entangled state of a spin chain described by the XY model, emphasizing its generality and experimental feasibility. Our results show that our proposal is capable of achieving high fidelities and purities for a given target state even when dephasing and thermal dissipative proces…
We study the effects of dissipative boundaries in many-body systems at continuous quantum transitions, when the parameters of the Hamiltonian driving the unitary dynamics are close to their critical values. As paradigmatic models, we consider fermionic wires subject to dissipative interactions at the boundaries, associated with pumping or loss of particles. They are induced by couplings with a Markovian baths, so that the evolution of the system density matrix can be described by a Lindblad master equation. We study the quantum evolution arising from variations of the Hamiltonian and dissipati…
Open quantum walks (OQW) are formulated as quantum Markov chains on graphs. It is shown that OQWs are a very useful tool for the formulation of dissipative quantum computing algorithms and for dissipative quantum state preparation. In particular, single qubit gates and the CNOT-gate are implemented as OQWs on fully connected graphs. Also, dissipative quantum state preparation of arbitrary single qubit states and of all two-qubit Bell-states is demonstrated. Finally, the discrete time version of dissipative quantum computing is shown to be more efficient if formulated in the language of OQWs.
We investigate the interplay between unitary dynamics after a quantum quench and localized dissipation in a noninteracting fermionic chain. In particular, we consider the effect of gain and loss processes, for which fermions are added and removed incoherently. We focus on the hydrodynamic limit of large distances from the source of dissipation and of long times, with their ratio being fixed. In this limit, the localized dissipation gives rise to an effective delta potential (dissipative impurity), and the time-evolution of the local correlation functions admits a simple hydrodynamic descriptio…
We propose a method for computing n-time correlation functions of arbitrary spinorial, fermionic, and bosonic operators, consisting of an efficient quantum algorithm that encodes these correlations in an initially added ancillary qubit for probe and control tasks. For spinorial and fermionic systems, the reconstruction of arbitrary n-time correlation functions requires the measurement of two ancilla observables, while for bosonic variables time derivatives of the same observables are needed. Finally, we provide examples applicable to different quantum platforms in the frame of the linear respo…
In this article we derive a closed form expression for the symmetric logarithmic derivative of Fermionic Gaussian states. This provides a direct way of computing the quantum Fisher Information for Fermionic Gaussian states. Applications ranges from quantum Metrology with thermal states and non-equilibrium steady states with Fermionic many-body systems.

A scheme for the generation of a Tonks-Girardeau gas of photons with purely dissipative interaction is described. We put forward a master equation approach for the description of stationary light in atomic four-level media and show that, under suitable conditions, two particle decays are the dominant photon loss mechanism. These dissipative two-photon losses increase the interaction strength by at least one order of magnitude as compared to dispersive two-photon processes and can drive the photons into the Tonks-Girardeau regime. Different scenarios for the observation of fermionic correlation…
