We study the temporal evolution of the mutual information (MI) in a one-dimensional Kitaev chain, coupled to a fermionic Markovian bath, subsequent to a global quench of the chemical potential. In the unitary case, the MI (or equivalently the bipartite entanglement entropy) saturates to a steady-state value (obeying a volume law) following a ballistic growth. On the contrary, we establish that in the dissipative case the MI is exponentially damped both during the initial ballistic growth as well as in the approach to the steady state. We observe that even in a dissipative system, postquench information propagates solely through entangled pairs of quasiparticles having a finite lifetime; this quasiparticle picture is further corroborated by the out-of-equilibrium analysis of two-point fermionic correlations. Remarkably, in spite of the finite lifetime of the quasiparticles, a finite steady-state value of the MI survives in asymptotic times which is an artifact of nonvanishing two-point correlations. Further, the finite lifetime of quasiparticles renders to a finite length scale in these steady-state correlations.
We study a modified model of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with quenched disorder, in which the driving force decreases as the interface rises up. A critical state is self-organized, and the anomalous scaling law with roughness exponent alpha=0.63 is numerically obtained.
The roughening behavior of a one-dimensional interface fluctuating under quenched disorder growth is examined while keeping an anchored boundary. The latter introduces detailed balance conditions which allows for a thorough analysis of equilibrium aspects at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. It is found that the interface roughens linearly with the substrate size only in the vicinity of special disorder realizations. Otherwise, it remains stiff and tilted.
In this lecture we present an overview of the physics of irreversible fractal growth process, with particular emphasis on a class of models characterized by {\em quenched disorder}. These models exhibit self-organization, with critical properties developing spontaneously, without the fine tuning of external parameters. This situation is different from the usual critical phenomena, and requires the introduction of new theoretical methods. Our approach to these problems is based on two concepts, the Fixed Scale Transformation, and the quenched-stochastic transformation, or Run Time Statistics (R…
We analyze the combined effect of a Laplacian field and quenched disorder for the generation of fractal structures with a study, both numerical and theoretical, of the quenched dielectric breakdown model (QDBM). The growth dynamics is shown to evolve from the avalanches of invasion percolation (IP) to the smooth growth of Laplacian fractals, i. e. diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) and the dielectric breakdown model (DBM). The fractal dimension is strongly reduced with respect to both DBM and IP, due to the combined effect of memory and field screening. This implies a specific relation betwee…
We study the growing patterns formed by a deterministic cellular automaton, the rotor-router model, in the presence of quenched noise. By the detailed study of two cases, we show that: (a) the boundary of the pattern displays KPZ fluctuations with a Tracy-Widom distribution, (b) as one increases the amount of randomness, the rotor-router path undergoes a transition from a recurrent to a transient walk. This transition is analysed here for the first time, and it is shown that it falls in the 3D Anisotropic Directed Percolation universality class.
Quenched randomness can have a dramatic effect on the dynamics of isolated 1D quantum many-body systems, even for systems that thermalize. This is because transport, entanglement, and operator spreading can be hindered by `Griffiths' rare regions which locally resemble the many-body-localized phase and thus act as weak links. We propose coarse-grained models for entanglement growth and for the spreading of quantum operators in the presence of such weak links. We also examine entanglement growth across a single weak link numerically. We show that these weak links have a stronger effect on entan…
Quantum information scrambling refers to the loss of local recoverability of quantum information, which has found widespread attention from high energy physics to quantum computing. In the present analysis we propose a possible starting point for the development of a comprehensive framework for the thermodynamics of scrambling. To this end, we prove that the growth of entanglement as quantified by the mutual information is lower bounded by the time-dependent change of Out-Of-Time-Ordered Correlator. We further show that the rate of increase of the mutual information can be upper bounded by the…
We introduce a self-organized surface growth model in 2+1 dimensions with anisotropic avalanche process, which is expected to be in the universality class of the anisotropic quenched Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with alternative signs of the nonlinear KPZ terms. It turns out that the surface height correlation functions in each direction scales distinctively. The anisotropic behavior is attributed to the asymmetric behavior of the quenched KPZ equation in 1+1 dimensions with respect to the sign of the nonlinear KPZ term.
Renyi Mutual information (RMI), computed from second Renyi entropies, can identify classical phase transitions from their finite-size scaling at the critical points. We apply this technique to examine the presence or absence of finite temperature phase transitions in various two-dimensional models on a square lattice, which are extensions of the conventional Ising model by adding a quenched disorder. When the quenched disorder causes the nearest neighbor bonds to be both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, (a) a spin glass phase exists only at zero temperature, and (b) a ferromagnetic phase e…
The phase ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional uniaxial nematic has been studied using a Cell Dynamic Scheme. The system after quench from T=infinity was found to scale dynamically with an asymptotic growth law similar to that of two-dimensional O(2) model (quenched from above the Kosterlitz - Thouless transition temperature), i.e. L(t) ~ t/ln(t/t0 ^{1/2} (with nonuniversal time scale t0). We obtained the true asymptotic limit of the growth law by performing our simulation for sufficiently long time. The presence of topologically stable 1/2-disclination points is reflected in the observed …
By quenching the strength of interactions in a partially condensed Bose gas we create a "super-saturated" vapor which has more thermal atoms than it can contain in equilibrium. Subsequently, the number of condensed atoms ($N_0$) grows even though the temperature ($T$) rises and the total atom number decays. We show that the non-equilibrium evolution of the system is isoenergetic and for small initial $N_0$ observe a clear separation between $T$ and $N_0$ dynamics, thus explicitly demonstrating the theoretically expected "two-step" picture of condensate growth. For increasing initial $N_0$ valu…
We study elastic systems such as interfaces or lattices pinned by correlated quenched disorder considering two different types of correlations: generalized columnar disorder and quenched defects correlated as ~ x^{-a} for large separation x. Using functional renormalization group methods, we obtain the critical exponents to two-loop order and calculate the response to a transverse field h. The correlated disorder violates the statistical tilt symmetry resulting in nonlinear response to a tilt. Elastic systems with columnar disorder exhibit a transverse Meissner effect: disorder generates the c…
In statistical physics entropy is usually introduced as a global quantity which expresses the amount of information that would be needed to specify the microscopic configuration of a system. However, for lattice models with infinitely many possible configurations per lattice site it is also meaningful to introduce entropy as a local observable that describes the information content of a single lattice site. Likewise, the mutual information can be interpreted as a two-point correlation function. Studying a particular growth model we demonstrate that the mutual information exhibits scaling prope…

Recent studies have explored theoretically the ability of populations of neurons to carry information about a set of stimuli, both in the case of purely discrete or purely continuous stimuli, and in the case of multidimensional continuous angular and discrete correlates, in presence of additional quenched disorder in the distribution. An analytical expression for the mutual information has been obtained in the limit of large noise by means of the replica trick. Here we show that the same results can actually be obtained in most cases without the use of replicas, by means of a much simpler expa…
We study the growth of entanglement between two adjacent regions in a tripartite, one-dimensional many-body system after a quantum quench. Combining a replica trick with a space-time duality transformation, we derive an exact, universal relation between the entanglement negativity and Renyi-1/2 mutual information which holds at times shorter than the sizes of all subsystems. Our proof is directly applicable to any translationally invariant local quantum circuit, i.e., any lattice system in discrete time characterised by local interactions, irrespective of the nature of its dynamics. Our deriva…
Using extensive Monte Carlo simulations we study aging properties of two disordered systems quenched below their critical point, namely the two-dimensional random-bond Ising model and the three-dimensional Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass with a bimodal distribution of the coupling constants. We study the two-times autocorrelation and space-time correlation functions and show that in both systems a simple aging scenario prevails in terms of the scaling variable $L(t)/L(s)$, where $L$ is the time-dependent correlation length, whereas $s$ is the waiting time and $t$ is the observation time. The…

Restricted solid on solid surface growth models can be mapped onto binary lattice gases. We show that efficient simulation algorithms can be realized on GPUs either by CUDA or by OpenCL programming. We consider a deposition/evaporation model following Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth in 1+1 dimensions related to the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process and show that for sizes, that fit into the shared memory of GPUs one can achieve the maximum parallelization speedup ~ x100 for a Quadro FX 5800 graphics card with respect to a single CPU of 2.67 GHz). This permits us to study the effect of quenched co…
Genetic regulatory circuits universally cope with different sources of noise that limit their ability to coordinate input and output signals. In many cases, optimal regulatory performance can be thought to correspond to configurations of variables and parameters that maximize the mutual information between inputs and outputs. Such optima have been well characterized in several biologically relevant cases over the past decade. Here we use methods of statistical field theory to calculate the statistics of the maximal mutual information (the `capacity') achievable by tuning the input variable onl…
