Pressure-induced phase transitions in orthovanadates have led to interesting physical phenomena. The observed transitions usually involve large volume collapses and drastic changes in the electronic and vibrational properties of the materials. In some cases, the phase transitions implicate coordination changes in vanadium, which has important consequences in the physical properties of vanadates. In this Perspective, we explore the current knowledge of the behavior of MVO4 vanadates under compression. In particular, we summarize studies of the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties and a few illustrative examples of high-pressure research in the compounds of interest are discussed. A systematic understanding of the high-pressure behavior of MVO4 compounds is presented, putting the emphasis on results that could be relevant for practical applications. Recent advances and future challenges in the study of orthovanadates under extreme pressure will be reviewed, along with conclusions that could have consequences for the studies of related oxides. Some ideas on topics that may lead to exciting breakthroughs in the near future will be presented too.
The compression behavior of zircon-type samarium orthovanadate, SmVO4, has been investigated using synchrotron-based powder x-ray diffraction and ab-initio calculations up to 21 GPa. The results indicate the instability of ambient zircon phase at around 6 GPa, which transforms to a high-density scheelite-type phase. The high-pressure phase remains stable up to 21 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the present investigations. On pressure release, the scheelite phase is recovered. Crystal structure of high-pressure phase and equations of state (EOS) for the zircon- and scheelite-type phases ha…
When monoclinic monazite-type LaVO4 (space group P21/n) is squeezed up to 12 GPa at room temperature, a phase transition to another monoclinic phase has been found. The structure of the high-pressure phase of LaVO4 is indexed with the same space group (P21/n), but with a larger unit-cell in which the number of atoms is doubled. The transition leads to an 8% increase in the density of LaVO4. The occurrence of such a transition has been determined by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and ab initio calculations. The combination of the three techniques allows us to also characterize accuratel…
It is known that the Zircon-type orthovanadates RVO4 show promise in many different applications as catalysts and optical materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the TbVO4 compound can be also used as magnetic refrigerant in efficient and ecofriendly cryocoolers due to its strong magnetocaloric effect at low temperature regime. The application of a relatively low magnetic field of 2 T along the easy magnetization axis (a) gives rise to a maximum entropy change of about 20 J/kg K at 4 K. More interestingly, under sufficiently high magnetic fields, the isothermal entropy change -ΔST remains…
AVO4 vanadates are materials of technological importance due to their variety of functional properties. They have applications as scintillators, thermophosphors, photocatalysts, cathodoluminescence, and laser-host materials. Studies at HP-HT are helpful for understanding the physical properties of the solid state, in special, the phase behavior of AVO4 materials. For instance, they have contributed to understand the macroscopic properties of vanadates in terms of microscopic mechanisms. A great progress has been made in the last decade towards the study of the pressure-effects on the structura…
The orthovanadates are useful as host matrices for immobilization of radioactive wastes. The thermodynamic stability of these materials is crucial for their applications in high pressure and temperatures environment. It is necessary to investigate the phonons in the entire Brillouin zone, beyond the zone-centre phonons accessible in previous Raman and infrared experiments. We have carried out extensive neutron inelastic scattering experiments to derive the phonon dispersion relation of YVO4 up to high energy transfer of 65 meV using a single crystal, which are perhaps reported for the first ti…
In pursue of a systematic characterization of rare-earth vanadates under compression, in this work we present a multifaceted study of the phase behavior of zircon-type orthovanadate PrVO$_4$ under high pressure conditions, up until 24 GPa. We have found that PrVO$_4$ undergoes a zircon to monazite transition at around 6 GPa, confirming previous results found by Raman experiments. A second transition takes place above 14 GPa, to a BaWO$_4$-I--type structure. The zircon to monazite structural sequence is an irreversible first-order transition, accompanied by a volume collapse of about 9.6%. Mona…
The effects of high pressure on the crystal structure of orthorhombic (Pnma) perovskite type cerium scandate have been studied in situ under high pressure by means of synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction, using a diamond anvil cell. We have found that the perovskite type crystal structure remains stable up to 40 GPa, the highest pressure reached in the experiments. The evolution of unit-cell parameters with pressure has indicated an anisotropic compression. The room-temperature pressure-volume equation of state is obtained from the experiments. From the evolution of microscopic structural para…
Salt crystallization is a major cause of weathering of artworks, monuments and rocks. Damage will occur if crystals continue to grow in confinement, i.e. within the pore space of these materials generating mechanical stresses. We report on a novel method that allows to directly measure, at the microscale, the resulting pressure while visualizing the spontaneous nucleation and growth of alkali halide salts. The experiments reveal the crucial role of the wetting films between the growing crystal and the confining walls for the development of the pressure. The results suggest that the pressure or…
We study the low-pressure (0 to 10 GPa) phase diagram of crystalline benzene using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and density functional theory (DFT) methods. We consider the $Pbca$, $P4_32_12$, and $P2_1/c$ structures as the best candidates for phase I and phase II. We perform diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations to obtain accurate static phase diagrams as benchmarks for modern van der Waals density functionals. We use density functional perturbation theory to compute phonon contribution in the free-energy calculations. Our DFT enthalpy-pressure phase diagram indicates that the $Pbca$ …
Shifting the Curie temperature in dependence on both uniaxial pressure and electric field in BaTiO$_3$ crystals was studied based on literature data. It was shown that both these dependences perfectly coincide when adjusting the scale. Based on coincidence of these dependencies a relationship between both an uniaxial pressure and an electric field when shifting the Curie temperature was established.
Study of condensed matter in certain extreme conditions allows one to better understand the mechanisms of microscopic structural transformations and to develop materials with completely new mechanical properties. In the present work, we study the structure and crystallization kinetics of bulk metallic glass (BMG) Ni$_{62}$Nb$_{38}$. We show that this BMG is rapidly crystallized under the combined effect of shear deformation and ultrahigh pressure. A threshold pressure required to initiate the formation of a stable crystalline phase is revealed. Shear deformation and pressure lead to the phase …
We report the first single crystal growth of the correlated metal LaNiO3 using a high-pressure optical-image floating zone furnace. The crystals were studied using single crystal/powder x-ray diffraction, resistivity, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility. The availability of bulk LaNiO3 crystals will (i) promote deep understanding in this correlated material, including the mechanism of enhanced paramagnetic susceptibility, and (ii) provide rich opportunities as a substrate for thin film growth such as important ferroelectric and/or multiferroic materials. This study demonstrates the powe…
Two new crystalline compounds, pentazole (N_{5}H) and ammonium pentazolate (NH_{4})(N_{5}), both featuring cyclo-{\rm N_{5}^{-}} are discovered using first principles evolutionary search of the nitrogen-rich portion of the hydro-nitrogen binary phase diagram (N_{x}H_{y}, x\geqy) at high pressures. Both crystals consist of the pentazolate N_{5}^{-} anion and ammonium NH_{4}^{+} or hydrogen H^{+} cations. These two crystals are predicted to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 30 GPa for (NH_{4})(N_{5}) and 50 GPa for pentazole N_{5}H. The chemical transformation of ammonium azide (NH_…
We study the gap closure with pressure of crystalline molecular hydrogen. The gaps are obtained from grand-canonical Quantum Monte Carlo methods properly extended to quantum and thermal crystals, simulated by Coupled Electron Ion Monte Carlo. Nuclear zero point effects cause a large reduction in the gap ($\sim 2eV$). \CP{Depending on the structure,} the fundamental indirect gap closes \CP{between 380GPa and} 530GPa for ideal crystals and 330-380GPa for quantum crystals. Beyond this pressure the system enters into a bad metal phase where the density of states at the Fermi level increases with p…
An overview of the behavior of materials at high pressure is presented, starting from the effects on single atoms driving electronic transitions and changes in periodic trends. A range of high-pressure-induced phenomena in the solid state are then discussed building on the atomic changes, including bizarre electronic structures, electrides, compounds of noble gases, changes in elemental miscibility, and strange structural and bonding configurations. In the final section, the field of high pressure superconductivity is discussed, as high pressure phases have generated immense study and exciteme…
There have existed for a long time a paradigm that TiO phases at ambient conditions are stable only if structural vacancies are available. Using an evolutionary algorithm, we perform an ab initio search of possible zero-temperature polymorphs of TiO in wide pressure interval. We obtain the Gibbs energy of the competing phases taking into account entropy via quasiharmonic approximation and build the pressure-temperature diagram of the system. We reveal that two vacancy-free hexagonal phases are the most stable at relatively low temperatures in a wide range of pressures. The transition between t…
We consider different structures, which can be obtained by polymerization of aromatic organic molecules under high pressures. These 2D and 3D covalently bonded organic polymers and their functionalization can pave the way to production of energy storage and conversion devices. High-pressure synthesis might serve as a useful hint for production of these structures and their functionalized analogs by means of wet chemical synthesis.
We study the possibility of pressure-induced transitions from a normal semiconductor to a topological insulator (TI) in bismuth tellurohalides using density functional theory and tight-binding method. In BiTeI this transition is realized through the formation of an intermediate phase, a Weyl semimetal, that leads to modification of surface state dispersions. In the topologically trivial phase, the surface states exhibit a Bychkov-Rashba type dispersion. The Weyl semimetal phase exists in a narrow pressure interval of 0.2 GPa. After the Weyl semimetal--TI transition occurs, the surface electron…
Ab initio molecular dynamic method within the framework of density functional theory is applied to analyze the structural and electronic properties of crystalline molecular hydrogen at temperature 100\,K. Pressure, pair correlation function and band structure are calculated. The crossover of molecular crystalline hydrogen from the state of a semiconductor to a semimetallic and metallic state is observed upon compression in the pressure range of 302-626\,GPa. At pressures below 361\,GPa, the molecular crystal with the C2/c structure is a semiconductor with an indirect gap. In the pressure range…
Motivated by an experimental finding that the successive phase transitions in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ observed at ambient pressure ceases to exist under high pressures, we carry out the density-functional-theory-based electronic structure calculations and demonstrate that the reversal of the crystal-field splitting reported previously is restored under high pressures, so that the orbital degrees of freedom disappears, resulting in the single phase transition that divides the system into high-temperature Mott insulating and low-temperature antiferromagnetic insulating phases.
Strong enhancement of critical current density in both low & high fields and flux pinning mechanism under hydrostatic pressure in optimally doped (Ba,K)Fe2As2 single crystals
A detailed high pressure study is carried out on 1T$^\prime$ MoTe$_{2}$ using X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Raman spectroscopy measurements upto about 30.5 GPa. High pressure XRD measurements show no structural transition. All the lattice parameters exhibit anomalous changes in the pressure region 8.4 to 12.7 GPa. Compressibility of the sample is found to be reduced by almost four times above 12.7 GPa with respect to that below 8.4 GPa. The anomalies in the Raman mode corresponding to the out of plane vibrations of Mo atoms sitting in the unit cell surface indicate a strong electron phonon coupli…
Near-forward Raman scattering combined with ab initio phonon and bond length calculations is used to study the phonon-polariton transverse optical modes (with mixed electrical and mechanical character) of the II-VI ZnSeS mixed crystal under pressure. The goal of the study is to determine the pressure dependence of the poorly resolved percolation-type Zn-S Raman doublet of the three oscillator [1(Zn-Se),2(Zn-S)] ZnSe68S32 mixed crystal, which exhibits a phase transition at approximately the same pressure as its two end compounds (~14 GPa, zincblende-to-rocksalt), as determined by high-pressure …
Anomalous pressure effect on the remanent lattice striction of a (La,Pr)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ bilayered manganite single crystal
Bulk single crystals of manganese arsenide (MnAs) were grown from melt at 1 GPa and 1100 °C by using a cubic-anvil, high-pressure, and high-temperature technique. The as-grown black colored crystals extracted from solidified lump exhibit a plate-like morphology, with flat surfaces and maximum dimensions up to ~ 3 x 2 x 0.5 mm3. With gradual temperature increase in premelting regions of solid phase of methanol and high pressure phase of ethanol, and using novel procedure of separation of electrode polarization effects, we are able to register the contribution of relaxation process to low-frequency dielectric constant. This contribution is about half the liquid's dielectric constant near temperature of solidification , and is almost an order of magnitude higher than reported earlier for ambient pressure phase of methanol. As opposed to dielectric constant of water at ambient pressure, which does not change much during …
The effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of a Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6, which possesses a four-layer-type conducting layer, have been studied through the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure under pressure was examined using synchrotron X-ray diffraction at SPring-8. In the low-pressure regime, bulk superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc of ~ 4.5 K was induced by pressure, which was achieved by in-plane chemical pressure effect owing to the compression of the tetragonal structure. In the h…
The structural characterization and electrical transport measurements at ambient and applied pressures of the compounds of the La(Ag1-xAux)Sb2 family are presented. Up to two charge density wave (CDW) transitions could be detected upon cooling from room temperature and an equivalence of the effects of chemical and physical pressure on the CDW ordering temperatures was observed with the unit cell volume being a salient structural parameter. As such La(Ag1-xAux)Sb2 is a rare example of a non-cubic system that exhibits good agreement between the effects of applied, physical, pressure and changes …
