Entanglement preparation and signal accumulation are essential for quantum parameter estimation, which pose significant challenges to both theories and experiments. Here, we propose how to utilize chaotic dynamics in a periodically driven Bose-Josephson system for achieving a high-precision measurement beyond the standard quantum limit (SQL). Starting from an initial non-entangled state, the chaotic dynamics generates quantum entanglement and simultaneously encodes the parameter to be estimated. By using suitable chaotic dynamics, the ultimate measurement precision of the estimated parameter can beat the SQL. The sub-SQL measurement precision scaling can also be obtained via specific observables, such as population measurements, which can be realized with state-of-art techniques. Our study not only provides new insights for understanding quantum chaos and quantum-classical correspondence, but also is of promising applications in entanglement-enhanced quantum metrology.
Quantum metrology promises high-precision measurements of classical parameters with far reaching implications for science and technology. So far, research has concentrated almost exclusively on quantum-enhancements in integrable systems, such as precessing spins or harmonic oscillators prepared in non-classical states. Here we show that large benefits can be drawn from rendering integrable quantum sensors chaotic, both in terms of achievable sensitivity as well as robustness to noise, while avoiding the challenge of preparing and protecting large-scale entanglement. We apply the method to spin…
A photonic analog of the Josephson effect is analyzed for a system formed by a partly transparent mechanical membrane dividing an optical cavity into two halves. Photons tunneling between the two sub-cavities constitute the coherent Jospehson current. The force acting upon the membrane due to the light pressure induces a nonlinearity which results in a rich dynamical structure. For example, contrary to standard bosonic Josephson systems, we encounter chaos. By means of a mean-field approach we identify the various regimes and corresponding phase diagram. At the short time scale, chaos is demon…

We demonstrate new experimental procedures for measuring small errors in a superconducting quantum bit (qubit). By carefully separating out gate and measurement errors, we construct a complete error budget and demonstrate single qubit gate fidelities of 0.98, limited by energy relaxation. We also introduce a new metrology tool -- a Ramsey interference error filter -- that can measure the occupation probability of the state $\ket{2}$ down to $10^{-4}$, a magnitude near the fault tolerant threshold.
We show that the three-junction SQUID device designed for the Josephson flux qubit can be used to study quantum chaos when operated at high energies. In the parameter region where the system is classically chaotic we analyze the spectral statistics. The nearest neighbor distributions $P(s)$ are well fitted by the Berry Robnik theory employing as free parameters the pure classical measures of the chaotic and regular regions of phase space in the different energy regions. The phase space representation of the wave functions is obtained via the Husimi distributions and the localization of the sta…
We show that the three-junction SQUID device designed for the Josephson flux qubit can be used to study the dynamics of quantum chaos when operated at high energies. We determine the parameter region where the system is classically chaotic. We calculate numerically the fidelity or Loschmidt echo (LE) in the quantum dynamics under perturbations in the magnetic field and in the critical currents, and study different regimes of the LE. We discuss how the LE could be observed experimentally considering both the preparation of the initial state and the measurement procedure.
The estimation of physical parameters with Heisenberg sensitivity and beyond is one of the crucial problems for current quantum metrology. However, unavoidable lossy effect is commonly believed to be the main obstacle when applying fragile quantum states. To utilize the lossy quantum metrology, we offer an interferometric procedure for phase parameters estimation at the Heisenberg (up to 1/N) and super-Heisenberg (up to 1/N^3) scaling levels in the framework of the linear and nonlinear metrology approaches, respectively. The heart of our setup is the novel soliton Josephson Junction (SJJ) syst…

Detection of low-reflectivity objects can be enriched via the so-called quantum illumination procedure. In order that this quantum procedure outperforms classical detection protocols, entangled states of microwave radiation are initially required. In this paper, we discuss the role of Josephson Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifiers (JTWPAs), based on circuit-QED components, as suitable sources of a two-mode squeezed vacuum state, a special signal-idler entangled state. The obtained wide bandwidth makes the JTWPA an ideal candidate for generating quantum radiation in quantum metrology and inform…
In the last few years, several groups have proposed and developed their own platforms demonstrating quantum-limited linear parametric amplification, with evident applications in quantum information and computation, electrical and optical metrology, radio astronomy and basic physics concerning axion detection. Here we propose a short review on the physics behind parametric amplification via metamaterials composed by coplanar wave-guides embedding several Josephson junctions. We present and compare different schemes that exploit the nonlinearity of the Josephson current-phase relation to mix the…
Josephson circuits have been ideal systems to study complex non-linear dynamics which can lead to chaotic behavior and instabilities. More recently, Josephson circuits in the quantum regime, particularly in the presence of microwave drives, have demonstrated their ability to emulate a variety of Hamiltonians that are useful for the processing of quantum information. In this paper we show that these drives lead to an instability which results in the escape of the circuit mode into states that are not confined by the Josephson cosine potential. We observe this escape in a ubiquitous circuit: a t…
We study the particle-entanglement dynamics witnessed by the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate governed by the kicked rotor Hamiltonian. The dynamics is investigated with a beyond mean-field approach. We link the time scales of the validity of this approximation in, both, classical regular and chaotic regions, with the maximum Lyapunov exponents of the classical system. This establishes an effective connection between the classical chaos and the QFI. We finally study the critical point of a quantum phase transition using the beyond mean-field approximation …
In this proposal, we present an experimental setup based on superconducting circuits and Josephson junctions to explore the modification of Josephson coefficient in the presence of external magnetic field due to vacuum polarization of quantum electrodynamics. This robust experiment can be considered as one of the few possible chances to observe the fine quantum field theory corrections in the low energy regimes in condensed matter systems. It can also be a new check for the universality of Josephson constant which is important in metrology. We will expect the signal to noise ratio of the read-…
Half a century after its discovery, the Josephson junction has become the most important nonlinear quantum electronic component at our disposal. It has helped reshape the SI system around quantum effects and is used in scores of quantum devices. By itself, the use of Josephson junctions in the volt metrology seems to imply an exquisite understanding of the component in every aspect. Yet, surprisingly, there have been long-standing subtle issues regarding the modeling of the interaction of a junction with its electromagnetic environment. Here, we find that a Josephson junction connected to a re…
Transmon qubits are ubiquitously used in superconducting quantum information processor architectures. Strong drives are required to realize fast, high-fidelity, gates and measurements, including parametrically activated processes. Here, we show that even off-resonant drives, in regimes routinely used in experiments, can cause strong modifications to the structure of the transmon spectrum rendering a large part of it chaotic. Accounting for the full nonlinear dynamics of the transmon in a Floquet-Markov formalism, we find that these chaotic states, often neglected through the hypothesis that th…

The recently reported experimental results claiming "quantum supremacy" achieved by Google quantum device are critically discussed. The Google team constructed a quantum chaotic system based on Josephson junction technology which cannot be reliably simulated by the present day supercomputers. However, the similar "supremacy" can be realized for properly designed micro-mechanical devices, like periodically forced Duffing oscillator, using the available technology of quartz clocks. It is also reminded that classical and quantum chaotic systems behave in a similar way. Therefore, in this case, on…
We explore the interplay between tunneling and interatomic interactions in the dynamics of a bosonic Josephson junction. We tune the scattering length of an atomic $^{39}$K Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well trap to investigate regimes inaccessible to other superconducting or superfluid systems. In the limit of small-amplitude oscillations, we study the transition from Rabi to plasma oscillations by crossing over from attractive to repulsive interatomic interactions. We observe a critical slowing down in the oscillation frequency by increasing the strength of an attractive inte…
We study the Atomtronics Quantum Interference Device employing a semiclassical perspective. We consider an $M$ site ring that is described by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. Coherent Rabi oscillations in the flow of the current are feasible, with an enhanced frequency due to to chaos-assisted tunneling. We highlight the consequences of introducing a weak-link into the circuit. In the latter context we clarify the phase-space considerations that are involved in setting up an effective "systems plus bath" description in terms of Josephson-Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian.
This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to an SU(2) rotation, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with the Ising and the nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterwards, we explain correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the …
The Josephson junctions (JJs) are at the heart of modern quantum technologies and metrology. In this work we establish quantum features of an atomic soliton Josephson junction (SJJ) device, which consists of two weakly-coupled condensates with negative scattering length. The condensates are trapped in a double-well potential and elongated in one dimension. Starting with classical field theory we map for the first time a two-soliton problem onto the effective two-mode Hamiltonian and perform a second quantization procedure. Compared to the conventional Bosonic Josephson junction (BJJ) condensat…
Josephson radiation is a powerful method to probe Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors. Recently, Josephson radiation with half the Josephson frequency has been experimentally observed in a HgTe-based junction, possibly from Majorana zero modes. However, this radiation vanishes above a critical voltage, sharply contradicting previous theoretical results. In this work, we theoretically obtain a radiation spectrum quantitatively in agreement with the experiment after including the nonlinear dynamics of the Majorana states into the standard resistively shunted junction model. We fur…

By utilizing Bose-Einstein condensate solitons, optically manipulated and trapped in a double-well potential, coupled through nonlinear Josephson effect, we propose novel quantum metrology applications with two soliton qubit states. In addition to steady-state solutions in different scenarios, phase space analysis, in terms of population imbalance - phase difference variables, is also performed to demonstrate macroscopic quantum self-trapping regimes. Schrödinger-cat states, maximally path-entangled ($N00N$) states, and macroscopic soliton qubits are predicted and exploited for the distinguish…
Remarkably, complex assemblies of superconducting wires, electrodes, and Josephson junctions are compactly described by a handful of collective phase degrees of freedom that behave like quantum particles in a potential. The inductive wires contribute a parabolic confinement, while the tunnel junctions add a cosinusoidal corrugation. Usually, the ground state wavefunction is localized within a single potential well -- that is, quantum phase fluctuations are small -- although entering the regime of delocalization holds promise for metrology and qubit protection. A direct route is to loosen the i…
The entanglement between two weakly coupled bosonic Josephson junctions is studied in relation to the classical mixed phasespace structure of the system, containing symmetry-related regular islands separated by chaos. The symmetry-resolved entanglement spectrum and bi-partite entanglement entropy of the system's energy eigenstates are calculated and compared to their expected structure for random states that exhibit complete or partial ergodicity. The entanglement spectra of chaos-supported eigenstates match the microcanonical structure of a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble due to the existence of a…

The recovery of classical chaotic dynamics from quantum systems has long been a subject of interest. Furthermore, recent work indicates that quantum chaos may well be significant in quantum information processing. In this paper we discuss the quantum to classical crossover of a superconducting quantum inference device (SQUID) ring. Such devices comprise of thick superconducting loop enclosing a Josephson weak link. These devices are currently strong candidates for many applications in quantum technologies. The weak link brings with it a non-linearity such that semi-classical models of this sys…
