We demonstrate new experimental procedures for measuring small errors in a superconducting quantum bit (qubit). By carefully separating out gate and measurement errors, we construct a complete error budget and demonstrate single qubit gate fidelities of 0.98, limited by energy relaxation. We also introduce a new metrology tool -- a Ramsey interference error filter -- that can measure the occupation probability of the state $\ket{2}$ down to $10^{-4}$, a magnitude near the fault tolerant threshold.
In this paper we calculate the loss of fidelity due to quantum leakage for the Josephson charge qubit (JCQ) in virtue of the Mathieu functions. It is shown that for an present typical parameters of JCQ E_{J}/E_{ch}~0.02, the loss of the fidelity per elementary operation is about 10^(-4) which satisfy the DiVincenzo's low decoherence criterion. By appropriately improving the design of the Josephson junction, namely, decreasing E_{J}/E_{ch} to 0.01, the loss of fidelity per elementary operation can decrease to 10^(-6) even smaller.
Any quantum computational network can be constructed with a sequence of the two-qubit diagonal quantum gates and one-qubit gates in two-state quantum systems. The universal construction of these quantum gates in the quantum systems and of the quantum computational networks with these gates may be achieved with the help of the operator algebra structure of Hamiltonians of the systems and the properties of the multiple-quantum operator algebra subspaces of the Liouville operator space and the specific properties of the quantum algorithm corresponding to the quantum network. As an example, the tw…
We propose a method to achieve strong coupling between a spin ensemble and a large Josephson junctions (LJJ). Then, the strong coupling between two spin ensembles can be induced by a LJJ. A non-adiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates is realized. Moreover, with the dispersive interaction between the spin ensembles and the LJJ, the high-fidelity two-qubit phase gate can be implemented with two spin ensembles within an operation time 0.41 ns and $π$ phase-swap gate can be realized within an operation time 103.11 ns with a high fidelity greater than 99%.
Superconducting qubits with tunable coupling are ideally suited for fast and accurate implementation of quantum logic. Here we present a simple approach, based on Weyl chamber steering, to CNOT gate design for inductively coupled phase qubits with tunable coupling strength g. In the presence of simultaneous rf pulses on the individual qubits that appropriately track the coupling strength as it is varied, we show that an infinite family of switching sequences preserving the time integral or "area" of g can be used to generate CNOT logic. We demonstrate our approach by considering time-dependenc…
Quantum optimal control theory allows to design accurate quantum gates. We employ it to design high-fidelity two-bit gates for Josephson charge qubits in the presence of both leakage and noise. Our protocol considerably increases the fidelity of the gate and, more important, it is quite robust in the disruptive presence of 1/f noise. The improvement in the gate performances discussed in this work (errors of the order of 10^{-3}-10^{-4} in realistic cases) allows to cross the fault tolerance threshold.
We introduce a method for finding the required control parameters for a quantum computer that yields the desired quantum algorithm without invoking elementary gates. We concentrate on the Josephson charge-qubit model, but the scenario is readily extended to other physical realizations. Our strategy is to numerically find any desired double- or triple-qubit gate. The motivation is the need to significantly accelerate quantum algorithms in order to fight decoherence.
We present a quantum computing scheme with atomic Josephson junction arrays. The system consists of a small number of atoms with three internal states and trapped in a far-off resonant optical lattice. Raman lasers provide the "Josephson" tunneling, and the collision interaction between atoms represent the "capacitive" couplings between the modes. The qubit states are collective states of the atoms with opposite persistent currents. This system is closely analogous to the superconducting flux qubit. Single qubit quantum logic gates are performed by modulating the Raman couplings, while two-qub…
Quantum logic gates must perform properly when operating on their standard input basis states, as well as when operating on complex superpositions of these states. Experiments using superconducting qubits have validated the truth table for particular implementations of e.g. the controlled-NOT gate [1,2], but have not fully characterized gate operation for arbitrary superpositions of input states. Here we demonstrate the use of quantum process tomography (QPT) [3,4] to fully characterize the performance of a universal entangling gate between two superconducting quantum bits. Process tomography …
The unit of quantum information is the qubit, a vector in a two-dimensional Hilbert space. On the other hand, quantum hardware often operates in two-dimensional subspaces of vector spaces of higher dimensionality. The presence of higher quantum states may affect the accuracy of quantum information processing. In this Letter we show how to cope with {\em quantum leakage} in devices based on small Josephson junctions. While the presence of higher charge states of the junction reduces the fidelity during gate operations we demonstrate that errors can be minimized by appropriately designing and op…
Josephson junctions have been shown to be a promising solid-state system for implementation of quantum computation. The significant two-qubit gates are generally realized by the capacitive coupling between the nearest neighbour qubits. We propose an effective Hamiltonian to describe charge qubits coupled through the cavity. We find that nontrivial two-qubit gates may be achieved by this coupling. The ability to interconvert localized charge qubits and flying qubits in the proposed scheme implies that quantum network can be constructed using this large scalable solid-state system.
We establish theoretical bounds on qubit detuning for high fidelity controlled-NOT logic gate implementations with weakly coupled Josephson phase qubits. It is found that the value of qubit detuning during the entangling pulses must not exceed 2g for two-step, and g for single-step control sequences, where g is the relevant coupling constant.
This note presents a simple formula for the average fidelity between a unitary quantum gate and a general quantum operation on a qudit, generalizing the formula for qubits found by Bowdrey et al [Phys. Lett. A 294, 258 (2002)]. This formula may be useful for experimental determination of average gate fidelity. We also give a simplified proof of a formula due to Horodecki et al [Phys. Rev. A 60, 1888 (1999)], connecting average gate fidelity to entanglement fidelity.
We propose a protected qubit based on a modular array of superconducting islands connected by semiconductor Josephson interferometers. The individual interferometers realize effective $\cos2ϕ$ elements that exchange `pairs of Cooper pairs' between the superconducting islands when gate-tuned into balance and frustrated by a half flux quantum. If a large capacitor shunts the ends of the array, the circuit forms a protected qubit because its degenerate ground states are robust to offset charge and magnetic field fluctuations for a sizable window around zero offset charge and half flux quantum. Th…
We show that the three-junction SQUID device designed for the Josephson flux qubit can be used to study the dynamics of quantum chaos when operated at high energies. We determine the parameter region where the system is classically chaotic. We calculate numerically the fidelity or Loschmidt echo (LE) in the quantum dynamics under perturbations in the magnetic field and in the critical currents, and study different regimes of the LE. We discuss how the LE could be observed experimentally considering both the preparation of the initial state and the measurement procedure.
We present theoretical schemes for performing high-fidelity one- and two-qubit pulsed gates for a superconducting flux qubit. The "IBM qubit" consists of three Josephson junctions, three loops, and a superconducting transmission line. Assuming a fixed inductive qubit-qubit coupling, we show that the effective qubit-qubit interaction is tunable by changing the applied fluxes, and can be made negligible, allowing one to perform high fidelity single qubit gates. Our schemes are tailored to alleviate errors due to 1/f noise; we find gates with only 1% loss of fidelity due to this source, for pulse…
Recent investigations show that conservation laws limit the accuracy of gate operations in quantum computing. The inevitable error under the angular momentum conservation law has been evaluated so far for the CNOT, Hadamard, and NOT gates for spin 1/2 qubits, while the SWAP gate has no constraint. Here, we extend the above results to general single-qubit gates. We obtain an upper bound of the gate fidelity of arbitrary single-qubit gates implemented under arbitrary conservation laws, determined by the geometry of the conservation law and the gate operation on the Bloch sphere as well as the si…
We have modelled the Zeno effect Control-Sign gate of Franson et al (PRA 70, 062302, 2004) and shown that high two-photon to one-photon absorption ratios, $κ$, are needed for high fidelity free standing operation. Hence we instead employ this gate for cluster state fusion, where the requirement for $κ$ is less restrictive. With the help of partially offline one-photon and two-photon distillations, we can achieve a fusion gate with unity fidelity but non-unit probability of success. We conclude that for $κ> 2200$, the Zeno fusion gate will out perform the equivalent linear optics gate.
We analyze the multifractality of the fidelity in an engineered Toffoli gate. Using quantum control methods, we define several optimization problems whose global solutions realize the gate in a chain of three qubits with XY Heisenberg interaction. We perturb the system by introducing imperfections in the form of $1/f$ noise to the interqubit couplings. Multifractal analysis shows that the degree of multifractality in the gate fidelity increases when optimized control pulses used to render the fidelity are less sensitive to variations in the interqubits coupling strengths.
Quantum control for error correction is critical for the practical use of quantum computers. We address quantum optimal control for single-shot multi-qubit gates by framing as a feasibility problem for the Hamiltonian model and then solving with standard global-optimization software. Our approach yields faster high-fidelity ($>$99.99\%) single-shot three-qubit-gate control than obtained previously, and our method has enabled us to solve the quantum-control problem for a fast high-fidelity four-qubit gate.
We propose to increase the fidelity of two-qubit resonator-induced phase gates in circuit QED by the use of narrowband single-mode squeezed drive. We show that there exists an optimal squeezing angle and strength that erases qubit 'which-path' information leaking out of the cavity and thereby minimizes qubit dephasing during these gates. Our analytical results for the gate fidelity are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of a cascaded master equation that takes into account the dynamics of the source of squeezed radiation. With realistic parameters, we find that it is possible to…
High-quality two-qubit gate operations are crucial for scalable quantum information processing. Often, the gate fidelity is compromised when the system becomes more integrated. Therefore, a low-error-rate, easy-to-scale two-qubit gate scheme is highly desirable. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new two-qubit gate scheme that exploits fixed-frequency qubits and a tunable coupler in a superconducting quantum circuit. The scheme requires less control lines, reduces crosstalk effect, simplifies calibration procedures, yet produces a controlled-Z gate in 30ns with a high fidelity of 99.5%, der…
We describe the optimal realization of entangling quantum gates for trapped ions mediated by a dissipative bus mode. With suitably shaped control pulses one can substantially decrease ion-phonon entanglement while maintaining the mediated interaction.
The discovery that a gate electrode suppresses the supercurrent in purely metallic systems is missing a complete physical understanding of the mechanisms at play. We here study the origin of this reduction in a Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor Josephson junction by performing, on the same device, a detailed investigation of the gate-dependent switching probability together with the local tunnelling spectroscopy of the normal metal. We demonstrate that high energy electrons leaking from the gate trigger the reduction of the critical current which is accompanied by an important broaden…
A universal squeezing gate capable of squeezing arbitrary input states is essential for continuous-variable quantum computation~\cite{PRA79062318,PRL112120504}. However, in present state-of-the-art techniques~\cite{PRA90060302,PRL106240504}, the fidelity of such gates is ultimately limited by the need to create squeezed vacuum modes of unbounded energy. Here we circumvent this fundamental limitation by using a heralded squeezing gate. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a squeezing gate that can achieve near unit fidelity for coherent input states. In particular, for a target squeezing o…
We provide new results for computing and comparing the quantum gate fidelity of quantum channels via their Choi matrices. We extend recent work that showed there exist non-dual pairs of quantum channels with equal gate fidelity by providing an explicit characterization of all such channels. We use our characterization to show that when the dimension is 2 (or 3, under slightly stronger hypotheses), the gate fidelity of two channels is equal if and only if their difference equals the difference of some unital map and its dual -- a fact that has been shown to be false when the dimension is 4 or l…
Based on a `shortcut-to-adiabaticity' (STA) scheme, we theoretically design and experimentally realize a set of high-fidelity single-qubit quantum gates in a superconducting Xmon qubit system. Through a precise microwave control, the qubit is driven to follow a fast `adiabatic' trajectory with the assistance of a counter-diabatic field and the correction of derivative removal by adiabatic gates. The experimental measurements of quantum process tomography and interleaved randomized benchmarking show that the process fidelities of our STA quantum gates are higher than 94.9% and the gate fideliti…
Randomized benchmarking (RB) protocols have become an essential tool for providing a meaningful partial characterization of experimental quantum operations. While the RB decay rate is known to enable estimates of the average fidelity of those operations under gate-independent Markovian noise, under gate-dependent noise this rate is more difficult to interpret rigorously. In this paper, we prove that single-qubit RB decay parameter $p$ coincides with the decay parameter of the gate-set circuit fidelity, a novel figure of merit which characterizes the expected average fidelity over arbitrary cir…
Silicon offers an attractive material platform for hardware realization of quantum computing. In this study, a microscopic stochastic simulation method is developed to model the effect of random interface charge traps in silicon metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) quantum gates. The statistical results show that by using a fast two-qubit gate in isotopically purified silicon, the two-qubit silicon-based quantum gates have the fidelity >98% with a probability of 75% for the state-of-the-art MOS interface quality. By using a composite gate pulse, the fidelity can be further improved to >99.5% with t…
We present a systematic comparison of different methods of fidelity estimation of a linear optical quantum controlled-Z gate implemented by two-photon interference on a partially polarizing beam splitter. We have utilized a linear fidelity estimator based on the Monte Carlo sampling technique as well as a non-linear estimator based on maximum likelihood reconstruction of a full quantum process matrix. In addition, we have also evaluated lower bound on quantum gate fidelity determined by average quantum state fidelities for two mutually unbiased bases. In order to probe various regimes of opera…
We have designed efficient quantum circuits for the three-qubit Toffoli (controlled-controlled NOT) and the Fredkin (controlled-SWAP) gate, optimized via genetic programming methods. The gates thus obtained were experimentally implemented on a three-qubit NMR quantum information processor, with a high fidelity. Toffoli and Fredkin gates in conjunction with the single-qubit Hadamard gates form a universal gate set for quantum computing, and are an essential component of several quantum algorithms. Genetic algorithms are stochastic search algorithms based on the logic of natural selection and bi…
In this paper we investigate the short-time decoherence of single Josephson charge qubit (JCQ). The measure of decoherence is chosen as the maximum norm of the deviation density operator. It is shown that when the temperature low enough (for example T=30mK), within the elementary gate-operation time tau{g}~12.7ps, the decoherence is smaller than 0.0001 at present setup of JCQ. The Josephson charge qubit is suitable to take the blocks for quantum computations according to the DiVincenzo low decoherence criterion.
With the current interest in building quantum computers, there is a strong need for accurate and efficient characterization of the noise in quantum gate implementations. A key measure of the performance of a quantum gate is the minimum gate fidelity, i.e., the fidelity of the gate, minimized over all input states. Conventionally, the minimum fidelity is estimated by first accurately reconstructing the full gate process matrix using the experimental procedure of quantum process tomography (QPT). Then, a numerical minimization is carried out to find the minimum fidelity. QPT is, however, well kn…
Remarkable experimental advances in quantum computing are exemplified by recent announcements of impressive average gate fidelities exceeding 99.9% for single-qubit gates and 99% for two-qubit gates. Although these high numbers engender optimism that fault-tolerant quantum computing is within reach, the connection of average gate fidelity with fault-tolerance requirements is not direct. Here we use reported average gate fidelity to determine an upper bound on the quantum-gate error rate, which is the appropriate metric for assessing progress towards fault-tolerant quantum computation, and we d…
High-fidelity two-qubits gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design a extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighbor qubit via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating center qubit and one near-neighbor qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking (SPB) and cross e…
We discuss a protected quantum computation process based on a hexagon Josephson junction array. Qubits are encoded in the punctured array, which is topologically protected. The degeneracy is related to the number of holes. The topological degeneracy is lightly shifted by tuning the flux through specific hexagons. We also show how to perform single qubit operation and basic quantum gate operations in this system.
Superconducting circuits with coupler architecture receive considerable attention due to their advantages in tunability and scalability. Although single-qubit gates with low error have been achieved, high-fidelity two-qubit gates in coupler architecture are still challenging. This paper pays special attention to examining the gate error sources and primarily concentrates on the related physical mechanism of ZZ parasitic couplings using a systematic effective Hamiltonian approach. Benefiting from the effective Hamiltonian, we provide simple and straightforward insight into the ZZ parasitic coup…
We obtain a simple formula for the average gate fidelity of a linear map acting on qudits. It is given in terms of minimal sets of pure state preparations alone, which may be interesting from the experimental point of view. These preparations can be seen as the outcomes of certain minimal positive operator valued measures. The connection of our results with these generalized measurements is briefly discussed.
Realizing the theoretical promise of quantum computers will require overcoming decoherence. Here we demonstrate numerically that high fidelity quantum gates are possible within a framework of quantum dynamical decoupling. Orders of magnitude improvement in the fidelities of a universal set of quantum gates, relative to unprotected evolution, is achieved over a broad range of system-environment coupling strengths, using recursively constructed (concatenated) dynamical decoupling pulse sequences.
We implement a two-qubit logic gate between a $^{43}\mathrm{Ca}^+\,$ hyperfine qubit and a $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}^+\,$ Zeeman qubit. For this pair of ion species, the S--P optical transitions are close enough that a single laser of wavelength $402\,\mathrm{nm}$ can be used to drive the gate, but sufficiently well separated to give good spectral isolation and low photon scattering errors. We characterize the gate by full randomized benchmarking, gate set tomography and Bell state analysis. The latter method gives a fidelity of $99.8(1)\%$, comparable to that of the best same-species gates and consis…
Geometric gates that use the global property of the geometric phase is believed to be a powerful tool to realize fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, for singlet-triplet qubits in semiconductor quantum dot, the low Rabi frequency of the microwave control leads to overly long gating time, and thus the constructing geometric gate suffers more from the decoherence effect. Here we investigate the key issue of whether the fast geometric gate can be realized for singlet-triplet qubits without introducing an extra microwave-driven pulse, while maintaining the high-fidelity gate operation at t…
We discuss a simple architecture for a quantum Toffoli gate implemented using three trapped ions. The gate, which in principle can be implemented with a single laser-induced operation, is effective under rather general conditions and is strikingly robust (within any experimentally realistic range of values) against dephasing, heating and random fluctuations of the Hamiltonian parameters. We provide a full characterization of the unitary and noise-affected gate using three-qubit quantum process tomography.
We report high-fidelity laser-beam-induced quantum logic gates on magnetic-field-insensitive qubits comprised of hyperfine states in $^{9}$Be$^+$ ions with a memory coherence time of more than 1 s. We demonstrate single-qubit gates with error per gate of $3.8(1)\times 10^{-5}$. By creating a Bell state with a deterministic two-qubit gate, we deduce a gate error of $8(4)\times10^{-4}$. We characterize the errors in our implementation and discuss methods to further reduce imperfections towards values that are compatible with fault-tolerant processing at realistic overhead.
We propose a scheme to implement high-fidelity conditional phase gates on pair of trapped ions immersed in a two-dimensional Coulomb crystal, using interaction mediated by all axial modes without side-band addressing. We show through numerical calculations that only local modes can be excited to achieve entangling gates through shaping the laser beams, so that the complexity of the quantum gate does not increase with the size of the system. These results suggest a promising approach for realization of large scale fault-tolerant quantum computation in two dimensional traps architecture.
We study how entanglement among the register qubits affects the gate fidelity in the one-way quantum computation if a measurement is inaccurate. We derive an inequality which shows that the mean gate fidelity is upper bounded by a decreasing function of the magnitude of the error of the measurement and the amount of the entanglement between the measured qubit and other register qubits. The consequence of this inequality is that, for a given amount of entanglement, which is theoretically calculated once the algorithm is fixed, we can estimate from this inequality how small the magnitude of the …
Two or three dimensional Paul traps can confine a large number of ions forming a Wigner crystal, which would provide an ideal architecture for scalable quantum computation except for the micromotion, an issue that is widely believed to be the killer for high fidelity quantum gates. Surprisingly, here we show that the micromotion is not an obstacle at all for design of high fidelity quantum gates, even though the magnitude of the micromotion is significantly beyond the requirement of the Lamb-Dicke condition. Through exact solution of the quantum Mathieu equations, we demonstrate the principle …
With a resonant amplitude-modulation field on two Rydberg atoms, we propose a Rydberg antiblockade (RAB) regime, where the Rabi oscillation between collective ground and excited states is induced. A controlled-Z gate can be yielded through a Rabi cycle. Further, several common issues of the RAB gates are solved by modifying the parameter relation. The gate fidelity and the gate robustness against the control error are enhanced with a shaped pulse. The requirement of control precision of the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction strength is relaxed. In addition, the atomic excitation is restrained and th…
Geometric phases are robust against certain types of local noises, and thus provide a promising way towards high-fidelity quantum gates. However, comparing with the dynamical ones, previous implementations of nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates usually require longer evolution time, due to the needed longer evolution path. Here, we propose a scheme to realize nonadiabatic geometric quantum gates with short paths based on simple pulse control techniques, instead of deliberated pulse control in previous investigations, which can thus further suppress the influence from the environment induced n…
The fidelity of the gate operation and the coherence time of neutral atoms trapped in an optical dipole trap are figures of merit for the applications. The motion of the trapped atom is one of the key factors which influence the gate fidelity and coherence time. The motion has been considered as a classical oscillator in analyzing the influence. Here we treat the motion of the atom as a quantum oscillator. The population on the vibrational states of the atom are considered in analyzing the gate fidelity and decoherence. We show that the fidelity of a coherent rotation gate is dramatically limi…
In this article we investigate the dynamics of a single negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy center (NV-) coupled to the spin of the nucleus of a 15-nitrogen atom and show that high fidelity gate operations are possible without the need for complicated composite pulse sequences. These operations include both the electron and nuclear spin rotations, as well as an entangling gate between them. These are experimentally realizable gates with current technology of sufficiently high fidelities that they can be used to build graph states for quantum information processing tasks.
A quantum computer that can be constructed based on a superconducting nanocircuits has previously been proposed. We examine the effect of background charge fluctuations on a coupled Josephson charge qubit system used in such a computer. In previous work, the background charge fluctuations were found to be an important dephasing channel for a single Josephson qubit. We investigate the effect of fluctuations in the bias at the charge degeneracy point of a Josephson charge qubit system. Evaluated quantities are gate fidelity and diagonal elements of the qubit's density matrix. The fluctuation lea…
