Gravitational physics is arguably better understood in the presence of a negative cosmological constant than a positive one, yet there exist strong technical similarities between the two settings. These similarities can be exploited to enhance our understanding of the more speculative realm of quantum cosmology, building on robust results regarding anti-de Sitter black holes describing the thermodynamics of holographic quantum field theories. To this end, we study 4-dimensional gravitational path integrals in the presence of a negative cosmological constant, and with minisuperspace metrics. We put a special emphasis on boundary conditions and integration contours. The Hawking-Page transition is recovered and we find that below the minimum temperature required for the existence of black holes the corresponding saddle points become complex. When the asymptotic anti-de Sitter space is cut off at a finite distance, additional saddle points contribute to the partition function, albeit in a very suppressed manner. These findings have direct consequences for the no-boundary proposal in cosmology, because the anti-de Sitter calculation can be brought into one-to-one correspondence with a path integral for de Sitter space with Neumann conditions imposed at the nucleation of the universe. Our results lend support to recent implementations of the no-boundary proposal focusing on momentum conditions at the "big bang".
We develop the general reconstruction scheme in two scalar model. The quintom-like theory which may describe (different) non-singular Little Rip or de Sitter cosmology is reconstructed. (In)stability of such dark energy cosmologies as well as the flow to fixed points is studied. The stability of Little Rip universe which leads to dissolution of bound objects sometime in future indicates that no classical transition to de Sitter space occurs.
Cosmology might turn out to be the study of fluctuations around a "de Sitter equilibrium" state. In this article I review the basic ideas and the attractive features of this framework, and respond to a number common questions raised about the de Sitter equilibrium picture. I show that this framework does not suffer from the "Boltzmann Brain" problem, and relate this cosmological picture to recent work on the "clock ambiguity".
The Planck mass and the cosmological constant determine the minimum and the maximum distances in the physical universe. A relativistic theory that takes into account a fundamental distance limit $\ell$ on par with the fundamental speed limit $c$, is based on the de Sitter extension of the Lorentz symmetry. This article proposes a new de Sitter gauge theory of gravity which allows the consistent cosmological evolution of the $\ell$. The theory is locally equivalent to Dirac's scale-invariant version of general relativity, and suggests a novel non-singular extension of cosmology.
We analyze the spectrum of time observable in noncommutative cosmological model introduced in [5], defined by $(ρ, s=\frac 12)\,$ representation of the de Sitter group. We find that time has peculiar property: it is not self-adjoint, but appropriate restrictions to the space of physical states give self-adjoint extensions. Extensions have discrete spectrum with logarithmic distribution of eigenvalues, $\,t_n \sim \ell\, \log\, n$+const, where $\ell$ characterizes noncommutativity and the usual assumption is $\,\ell=\ell_{Planck}$. When calculated on physical states, radius of the universe is b…
The quantum mechanics of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes is of great recent interest because of their peculiar thermodynamic properties as well as their realization in modern dark energy cosmology which indicates the presence of a small positive cosmological constant. We study Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes and also the Kantowki-Sachs Cosmology using quantum computing. In these cases in addition to the Hamiltonian there is a Mass operator which plays an important role in describing the quantum states of the black hole and Kantowski-Sachs cosmology. We compute the spectrum of these ope…
I show that the de Sitter Equilibrium cosmology generically predicts observable levels of curvature in the Universe today. The predicted value of the curvature depends only on the ratio of the density of non-relativistic matter to energy density in cosmological constant, and the value of the curvature from the initial bubble that starts the inflation. The result is independent of the scale of inflation, the shape of the potential during inflation, and many other details of the cosmology. Future cosmological measurements of the matter density, cosmological constant and curvature will open up a …
In the framework of multidimensional $f(R)$ gravity, we study the metrics of compact extra dimensions assuming that our 4D space has the de Sitter metric. Manifolds described by such metrics could be formed at the inflationary and even higher energy scales. It is shown that in the presence of a scalar field, varying in the extra factor space $\mathbb{M}_2$, it is possible to obtain a variety of inhomogeneous metrics in $\mathbb{M}_2$. Each of these metrics leads to a certain value of the 4D cosmological constant $Λ_4$, and in particular, it is possible to obtain $Λ_4 =0$, as is confirmed by nu…
As quotient spaces, Minkowski and de Sitter are fundamental, non-gravitational spacetimes for the construction of physical theories. When general relativity is constructed on a de Sitter spacetime, the usual Riemannian structure is replaced by a more general structure called de Sitter-Cartan geometry. In the contraction limit of an infinite cosmological term, the de Sitter-Cartan spacetime reduces to a singular, flat, conformal invariant four-dimensional cone spacetime, in which our ordinary notions of time interval and space distance are absent. It is shown that such spacetime satisfies all p…
An accelerated boundary correspondence (ABC) is solved for the de Sitter moving mirror cosmology. The beta Bogoliubov coefficients reveal the particle spectrum is a Planck distribution with temperature inversely proportional to horizon radius. The quantum stress-tensor indicates a constant emission of energy flux consistent with eternal equilibrium, while the total energy carried by the particles remains finite. The curved spacetime transformation to flat spacetime with an accelerated boundary is illustrated, and also shown for Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime.
Recent developments in string compactifications demonstrate obstructions to the simplest constructions of low energy cosmologies with positive vacuum energy. The existence of obstacles to creating scale-separated de Sitter solutions indicates a UV/IR puzzle for embedding cosmological vacua in a unitary theory of quantum gravity. Motivated by this puzzle, we propose an embedding of positive energy Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmology within string theory. Our proposal involves confining 4D gravity on a brane which mediates the decay from a non-supersymmetric false AdS5 vacuum to a true…
We present exact non-singular bounce solutions of general relativity in the presence of a positive cosmological constant and an electromagnetic field, without any exotic matter. The solutions are distinguished by being spatially inhomogeneous in one direction, while they can also contain non-trivial electromagnetic field lines. The inhomogeneity may be substantial, for instance, there can be one bounce in one region of the universe and two bounces elsewhere. Since the bounces are followed by a phase of accelerated expansion, the metrics described here also permit the study of (geodesically com…
Einstein's theory of General Relativity is the benchmark example for empirical success and mathematical elegance in theoretical physics. However, in spite of being the most successfully tested theory in physics, there are strong theoretical and observational arguments for why General Relativity should fail. It is not a question of if, but rather a question of where and when! I start by recounting the tremendous success in observational cosmology over the past three decades, that has led to the era of precision cosmology. I will then summarize the pathologies in Einstein's theory of gravity, as…
Motivated by the lack of consensus on whether or not de Sitter (dS) lies in the Swampland, we use a recently developed braneworld construction and known Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua to compute an explicit effective dS cosmology in three dimensions. We consider a non-perturbative AdS$_4$ vacuum decaying to another lower AdS$_4$ vacuum via bubble-nucleation. We also consider the more speculative case where a dS$_4$ decay to a Minkowski$_4$. The Israel junction conditions are solved across the bubble and we obtain the Friedmann equations from which the cosmological constants can be read off, in the…
We consider the de Sitter cosmology deformed by the presence of a thermal bath of radiation and/or time-dependent moduli fields. Depending on the parameters, either a first or second order phase transition can occur. In the first case, an instanton allows a double analytic continuation. It induces a probability to enter the inflationary evolution by tunnel effect from another cosmological solution. The latter starts with a big bang and, in the case the transition does not occur, ends with a big crunch. A temperature duality exchanges the two cosmological branches. In the limit where the pure d…
We study conditions for the existence of asymptotic observables in cosmology. With the exception of de Sitter space, the thermal properties of accelerating universes permit arbitrarily long observations, and guarantee the production of accessible states of arbitrarily large entropy. This suggests that some asymptotic observables may exist, despite the presence of an event horizon. Comparison with decelerating universes shows surprising similarities: Neither type suffers from the limitations encountered in de Sitter space, such as thermalization and boundedness of entropy. However, we argue tha…
We propose to embed de Sitter space into five dimensional anti-de Sitter space to compute some physical quantities of interest, using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The static de Sitter can be considered as the conformal structure of the boundary of the hyperbolic AdS5 with a horizon, thus energy as well as entropy can be computed. The global dS can be embedded into a half-global AdS5, and the dS entropy can be regarded as entanglement entropy in this case. Finally, the inflationary dS can also be regarded as the boundary of AdS5, and this can be extended to include general cosmology with a posit…
Recent studies show that there is tension between the de Sitter swampland conjectures proposed by Obeid, et al. and inflationary cosmology. In this paper, we consider an alternative to inflation, `tachyacoustic' cosmology, in light of swampland conjectures. In tachyacoustic models, primordial perturbations are generated by a period of superluminal sound speed instead of accelerating expansion. We show that realizations of tachyacoustic Lagrangians can be consistent with the de Sitter swampland conjectures, and therefore can in principle be consistent with a UV-complete theory. We derive a gene…
Braneworld cosmology for a domain wall embedded in the charged (Anti)-de Sitter-Schwarzschildblack hole of the five--dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-Maxwell theory is considered. The effective Friedmann equation for the brane is derived by introducing the necessary surface counterterms required for a well-defined variational principlein the Gauss--Bonnet theory and for the finiteness of the bulk space. The asymptotic dynamics of the brane cosmology is determined and it is found that solutions with vanishingly small spatial volume are unphysical. The finiteness of the bulk action is related t…
We review O$(d,d)$ Covariant String Cosmology to all orders in $α'$ in the presence of matter and study its solutions. We show that the perturbative analysis for a constant dilaton in the absence of a dilatonic charge does not lead to a time-independet equation of state. Meanwhile, the non-perturbative equations of motion allow de Sitter solutions in the String frame parametrized by the equation of state and the dilatonic charge. Among this set of solutions, we show that a cosmological constant equation of state implies a de Sitter solution both in String and Einstein frames while a winding eq…
Horndeski models with a de Sitter critical point for any kind of material content may provide a mechanism to alleviate the cosmological constant problem. Moreover, they could allow us to understand the current accelerated expansion of the universe as the result of the dynamical approach to the critical point when it is an attractor. We show that this critical point is indeed an attractor for the shift- symmetric subfamily of models with these characteristics. We study the cosmological scenario that results when considering radiation and matter content, and conclude that their background dynami…
This work applies the formalism developed in our earlier paper to de Sitter space. After exactly solving the relevant Heisenberg equations of motion we give a detailed discussion of the subtleties associated with defining physical states and the emergence of the classical theory. This computation provides the striking result that quantum corrections to this long wavelength limit of gravity eliminate the problem of the big crunch. We also show that the same corrections lead to possibly measureable effects on the CMB radiation. Finally, for the sake of completeness we discuss the special case, $…
We consider higher derivative gravity lagrangians in 3 and 4 dimensions, which admit simple c-theorems, including upto six derivative curvature invariants. Following a suggestion by Myers, these lagrangians are restricted such that the fluctuations around (anti) de Sitter spaces have second order linearized equations of motion. We study c-theorems both in the context of AdS/CFT and cosmology. In the context of cosmology, the monotonic function is the entropy defined on the apparent horizon through Wald's formula. Exact black hole solutions which are asymptotically (anti) de Sitter are presente…
We perform a minisuperspace analysis of an information-theoretic nonlinear Wheeler-deWitt (WDW) equation for de Sitter universes. The nonlinear WDW equation, which is in the form of a difference-differential equation, is transformed into a pure difference equation for the probability density by using the current conservation constraint. In the present study we observe some new features not seen in our previous approximate investigation, such as a nonzero minimum and maximum allowable size to the quantum universe: An examination of the effective classical dynamics supports the interpretation of…
We sketch a particularly simple and compelling version of D-brane cosmology. Inspired by the semi-phenomenological Randall--Sundrum models, and their cosmological generalizations, we develop a variant that contains a single (3+1)-dimensional D-brane which is located on the boundary of a single bulk (4+1)-dimensional region. The D-brane boundary is itself to be interpreted as our visible universe, with ordinary matter (planets, stars, galaxies) being trapped on this D-brane by string theory effects. The (4+1)-dimensional bulk is, in its simplest implementation, adS_{4+1}, anti-de Sitter space. …
We examine an approach to cosmology, known as Well-Tempering, that allows for a de Sitter phase whose expansion is independent of the cosmological constant. Starting from a generic scalar-tensor theory compatible with the recent gravitational wave observation, we impose the Well-Tempering conditions and derive a system that is capable of tuning away the cosmological constant within a sub-class of Horndeski theory, where the scalar has a canonical kinetic term and a general potential. This scenario improves upon the Fab-Four approach by allowing a standard fluid-cosmology before entering the de…
We employ Riesz's fractional derivative into the Wheeler--DeWitt equation for a closed de Sitter geometry and obtain the no-boundary and tunneling wavefunctions. From the corresponding probability distributions, the event horizon of the nucleated universe can be a fractal surface with dimensions between $2\leq D<3$. Concretely, the tunneling wavefunction favors fractal dimensions less than $2.5$ and an accelerated power-law phase. Differently, the no-boundary proposal conveys fractal dimensions close to $3$, with the universe instead entering a decelerated phase. Subsequently, we extend our di…
Constructing an explicit compactification yielding a metastable de Sitter (dS) vacuum in a UV consistent string theory is an incredibly difficult open problem. Motivated by this issue, as well as the conjecture that all non-supersymmetric AdS vacua must decay, we discuss the alternative possibility of realizing an effective four-dimensional dS cosmology on a codimension-one bubble wall separating two AdS$_5$ vacua. The construction further elaborates on the scenario of arXiv:1807.01570, where the aforementioned cosmology arises due to a non-perturbative decay and is embedded in a five-dimensio…
The creation of 4d de Sitter (inflationary) boundary gluing two d5 de Sitter bulks on the classical as well as on quantum level (with account of brane QFT via corresponding trace anomaly induced effective action) is discussed. Quantum effects decrease the classical de Sitter brane radius or create new de Sitter brane with even smaller radius. It is important that brane CFT may be chosen to be dual to one of 5d de Sitter bulks, making the explicit relation of de Sitter brane-world with dS/CFT correspondence. In this way, the localization of gravity on the brane is shown. Moving (time-dependent)…
We observe that the large $N$ world sheet RG in $c=1$ matrix model, formulated in hep-th/0310106, hep-th/0311177, with $N^2$ quantum mechanical degrees of freedom at small compactification radius is capable of capturing dimensional mutation. This manifests in deforming the familiar $AdS_2$ quantum mechanics in the minisuperspace Wheeler-de Witt (WdW) cosmology of the 2D quantum gravity, obtained by the large $N$ RG with $N$ quantum mechanical degrees of freedom only, to a modified WdW cosmology describing tunneling to an inflationary de Sitter vacuum and its evolution. The scale fluctuation pl…
A discussion of inhomogeneity is indispensable to understand quantum cosmology, even if one uses the dynamics of homogeneous geometries as a first approximation. While a full quantization of inhomogeneous gravity is not available, a broad framework of effective field theory provides important ingredients for quantum cosmology. Such a setting also allows one to take into account lessons from the Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) scenario. Based on several new ingredients, this article presents conditions on various parameters and mathematical constructions that appear in minisuperspace models…
We aim to study rolling tachyon cosmological solutions in de Sitter gravity. The solutions are taken to be flat FRW type and these are not time-reversal symmetric. We find that cosmological constant of our universe has to be fine-tuned at the level of the action itself, as in KKLT string compactification. The rolling tachyon can give rise to required inflation with suitable choice of the initial conditions which include nonvanishing Hubble constant. We also determine an upper bound on the volume of the compactification manifold.
The $α'$-complete cosmology developed by Hohm and Zwiebach classifies the ${\rm O}(d,d;{\mathbb R})$ invariant theories involving metric, $b$-field and dilaton that only depend on time, to all orders in $α'$. Some of these theories feature non-perturbative isotropic de Sitter vacua in the string frame, generated by the infinite number of higher-derivatives of ${\rm O}(d,d;{\mathbb R})$ multiplets. Extending the isotropic ansatz, we construct stable and unstable non-perturbative de Sitter solutions in the string and Einstein frames. The generalized equations of motion admit new solutions, inclu…
This PhD thesis is devoted to the study of supersymmetry preserving background solutions of N=2 supergravity in 4 dimensions. The main contents are divided into three major parts, briefly summarized as follows. Part I deals with analysis of maximally supersymmetric configurations. Part II discusses BPS black holes with Minkowski and anti-de Sitter (AdS) asymptotics. The main topics in part III are superalgebras, BPS bounds and conserved charges for asymptotically flat or AdS spacetimes. Most of the chapters are based on previously published results with the exception of chapter 10 in part III,…
Using the dS/QFT correspondence in the context of inflation allows for the study of interesting, otherwise inaccessible physics. In particular, by studying inflation via its dual field theory at the boundary of the de Sitter space, it may be possible to study a regime of strongly coupled gravity at early times. The purpose of this work is to completely express cosmological observables in terms of the free parameters of a dual field theory and to compare them with CMB data. In this way, constraints on the observational parameters constrains the validity of the strongly coupled inflation picture…
Demanding $O(d,d)$-duality covariance, Hohm and Zwiebach have written down the action for the most general cosmology involving the metric, $b$-field and dilaton, to all orders in $α'$ in the string frame. Remarkably, for an FRW metric-dilaton ansatz the equations of motion turn out to be quite simple, except for the presence of an unknown function of a single variable. If this unknown function satisfies some simple properties, it allows de Sitter solutions in the string frame. In this note, we write down the Einstein frame analogues of these equations, and make some observations that make the …
A scalar-tensor model with Gauss-Bonnet and non-minimal kinetic couplings is considered, in which ghost modes are eliminated via a Lagrange multiplier constraint. A reconstruction procedure is deviced for the scalar potential and Lagrange multiplier, valid for any given cosmological scenario. In particular, inflationary and dark energy cosmologies of different types (power-law, Little-Rip, de Sitter, quasi de Sitter) are reconstructed in such models. It is shown that, for various choices of the kinetic coupling terms, it is possible to obtain a viable inflationary phenomenology compatible with…
We review results about the development and asymptotic nature of singularities in `brane-bulk' systems. These arise for warped metrics obeying the 5-dimensional Einstein equations with fluid-like sources, and including a brane 4-metric that is either Minkowski or de Sitter or Anti-de Sitter. We characterize all singular Minkowski brane solutions, and look for regular solutions with nonzero curvature. We briefly comment on matching solutions, energy conditions and finite Planck mass criteria for admissibility, and we briefly discuss the connection of these results to ambient theory.
We have studied scalar potentials V of gauged N=8,4,2 supergravities in d=4. Extrema of these potentials may correspond to de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua. All de Sitter extrema that we have studied correspond to unstable maximum/saddle points with negative curvature |V''|=2V for the fields canonically normalized at the extremum. This is equivalent to the relation |m^2| =|R|/2 = 6H^2 for the tachyonic mass m, the curvature scalar R, and the Hubble constant H. This prevents the use of de Sitter extrema for slow-roll inflation in the early universe, which would require |V''| \ll V …
We propose an effective model for an exponentially expanding universe in the brane-world scenario. The setup consists of a 5D black hole and a brane close to the black hole horizon. In case the brane acquires a specific configuration, which we deduce from stability arguments, the induced metric outside the black hole horizon on the brane becomes de Sitter in static coordinates. Studying the Einstein equations perturbatively we find the effective gravity on the brane at this level and derive the 4D gravitational constant. Considering a homogeneous and isotropic fluid in the corresponding FLRW c…
A large number of models have been analyzed in loop quantum cosmology, using mainly minisuperspace constructions and perturbations. At the same time, general physics principles from effective field theory and covariance have often been ignored. A consistent introduction of these ingredients requires substantial modifications of existing scenarios. As a consequence, none of the broader claims made mainly by the Ashtekar school --- such as the genericness of bounces with astonishingly semiclassical dynamics, robustness with respect to quantization ambiguities, the realization of covariance, and …
Recently Kaloper, Kleban and Martin reexamined the McVittie solution and argued, contrary to a very widely held belief, that the solution contains a black hole in an expanding universe. Here we corroborate their main conclusion but go on to examine, in some detail, a specific solution that asymptotes to the $Λ$CDM cosmology. We show that part of the boundary of the solution contains the inner bifurcation two - sphere of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter spacetime and so both the black and white hole horizons together form a partial boundary of this McVittie solution. We go on to show that the null…
We consider a brane generated by a scalar field domain wall configuration in 4+1 dimensions, interpolating, in most cases, between two vacua of the field. We study the cosmology of such a system in the cases where the effective four-dimensional brane metric is de Sitter or anti de Sitter, including a discussion of the bulk coordinate singularities present in the de-Sitter case. We demonstrate that a scalar field kink configuration can support a brane with dS$_4$ cosmology, despite the presence of coordinate singularities in the metric. We examine the trapping of fermion fields on the domain wa…
We explore the dynamic dS/CFT correspondence using the moving domain wall(brane) approach in the brane cosmology. The bulk spacetimes are given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black hole and the topological-de Sitter (TdS) solutions. We consider the embeddings of (Euclidean) moving domain walls into the (Euclidean) de Sitter spaces. The TdS solution is better to describe the static dS/CFT correspondence than the SdS black hole, while in the dynamic dS/CFT correspondence the SdS solution provides situation better than that of the TdS solution. However, we do not find a desirable cosmologic…
We extend the mimetic cosmology to models containing gauge invariant $p$-forms. The $0$-form case reproduces the well-known results of the mimetic dark matter, the $1$-form corresponds to the gauge field mimetic model while the $2$-form model is the Hodge dual of the $0$-form model in $4$ spacetime dimensions. We study the cosmological applications of the new gauge field mimetic model and show that it generates an energy density component which mimics the roles of spatial curvature. In the presence of the Maxwell term, the model also supports the flat, open and closed de Sitter-like cosmologic…
We present the graviton propagator for an infinite derivative, $D$-dimensional, non-local action, up to quadratic order in curvature around a Minkowski background, and discuss the conditions required for this class of gravity theory to be ghost-free. We then study the gravitational entropy for de-Sitter and Anti-de Sitter backgrounds, before comparing with a recently derived result for a Schwarzschild blackhole, generalised to arbitrary $D$-dimensions, whereby the entropy is given simply by the area law. A novel approach of decomposing the entropy into its $(r, t)$ and spherical components is …
We present a calculation of the zeta function and of the functional determinant for a Laplace-type differential operator, corresponding to a scalar field in a higher dimensional de Sitter brane background, which consists of a higher dimensional anti-de Sitter bulk spacetime bounded by a de Sitter section, representing a brane. Contrary to the existing examples, which all make use of conformal transformations, we evaluate the zeta function working directly with the higher dimensional wave operator. We also consider a generic mass term and coupling to curvature, generalizing previous results. Th…
In this paper we construct the 5D uplift of 4D gravitational waves in de Sitter cosmology for the brane world scenario based on a nucleated bubble in AdS5. This makes it possible to generalize the connection between the dark bubbles and Vilenkin's quantum cosmology to include gravitational perturbations. We also use the uplift to explain the interpretation of the apparently negative energy contributions in the 4D Einstein equations, which distinguish the dark bubble scenario from Randall-Sundrum.
We elaborate on the cosmological implications of the recently established non-perturbative $O(D,D$)-symmetric approach. Following the $α'$-complete Friedmann equations, we provide a qualitative description of the dynamics of anisotropy perturbations. We find that the spacetime stability depends on the sign of the generalized dilaton time derivative. We consider isotropic limits and find possible mechanism for pre-big bang cosmology, governed by the value of cosmological constant.
We investigate observational constraints on the Brans-Dicke cosmological model using observational data coming from distant supernovae type Ia, the Hubble function $H(z)$ measurements, information coming from the Alcock-Paczy{ń}ski test, and baryon acoustic oscillations. Our analysis is based on the modified Friedmann function resulting form dynamical investigations of Brans-Dicke cosmology in the vicinity of a de Sitter state. The qualitative theory of dynamical systems enables us to obtain three different behaviors in the vicinity of this state. We find for a linear approach to the de Sitter…
String theory contains sources like orientifold planes that support higher derivative interactions. These interactions make possible static flux compactifications which are forbidden in supergravity. They can also lead to violations of the strong energy condition (SEC) which is needed for an accelerating universe. We examine how large a violation is possible in the context of the heterotic string compactified to four dimensions. We find that de Sitter solutions are still not possible but that classically forbidden anti-de Sitter solutions are possible.
