More than 30 years ago Edwards and co-authors proposed a model to describe the statistics of granular packings by an ensemble of equiprobable jammed states. Experimental tests of this model remained scarce so far. We introduce a simple system to analyze statistical properties of jammed granular ensembles to test Edwards theory. Identical spheres packed in a nearly two-dimensional geometrical confinement were studied in experiments and numerical simulations. When tapped, the system evolves towards a ground state, but due to incompatible domain structures it gets trapped. Analytical calculations reproduce relatively well our simulation results, which allows us to test Edwards theory on a coupled system of two subsystems with different properties. We find that the joint system can only be described by the Edwards theory if considered as a single system due to the constraints in the stresses. The results show counterintuitive effects as in the coupled system the change in the order parameter is opposite to what is expected from the change in the compactivity.
A theory for jammed granular materials is developed with the aid of a nonequilibrium steady-state distribution function. The approximate nonequilibrium steady-state distribution function is explicitly given in the weak dissipation regime by means of the relaxation time. The theory quantitatively agrees with the results of the molecular dynamics simulation on the critical behavior of the viscosity below the jamming point without introducing any fitting parameter.
Granular materials jam when developing a network of contact forces able to resist the applied stresses. Through numerical simulations of the dynamics of the jamming process, we show that the jamming transition does not occur when the kinetic energy vanishes. Rather, as the system jams, the kinetic energy becomes dominated by rattlers particles, that scatter withing their cages. The relaxation of the kinetic energy in the jammed configuration exhibits a double power-law decay, which we interpret in terms of the interplay between backbone and rattlers particles.
We numerically investigate the rheological properties of jammed frictionless granular materials under an oscillatory shear in terms of our simulation of the distinct element method. It is demonstrated that the constitutive relation between the shear stress and the shear strain of grains strongly depends on the amplitude and the frequency of the oscillatory shear. For a small amplitude region, the granular material behaves as a visco-elastic material characterized by the Kelvin-Voigt model, while it behaves as a yield stress liquid for a large amplitude region. We find that the rheology of grai…
In 1989, Sir Sam Edwards made the visionary proposition to treat jammed granular materials using a volume ensemble of equiprobable jammed states in analogy to thermal equilibrium statistical mechanics, despite their inherent athermal features. Since then, the statistical mechanics approach for jammed matter has garnered an extraordinary amount of attention by both theorists and experimentalists. Here, we review a systematic approach to jammed matter based on the Edwards statistical mechanical ensemble. We discuss the construction of microcanonical and canonical ensembles based on the volume fu…

Dry granular materials such as sand, gravel, pills, or agricultural grains, can become rigid when compressed or sheared. At low density, one can distort the shape of a container of granular material without encountering any resistance. Under isotropic compression, the material will reach a certain {\it jamming} density and then resist further compression. {\em Shear jamming} occurs when resistance to shear emerges in a system at a density lower than the jamming density, and the elastic properties of such states have important implications for industrial and geophysical processes. We report on …
Granular material on an inclined plane will flow like a fluid if the angle $θ$ the plane makes with the horizontal is large enough. We employ a modification of a hydrodynamic model introduced previously to describe Couette flow experiments to describe chute flow down a plane. In this geometry, our model predicts a jammed-to-flowing transition as $θ$ is increased even though it does not include solid friction, which might seem necessary to stabilize a state without flow. The transition is driven by coupling between mean and fluctuating velocity. In agreement with experiments and simulations, it…
We perform molecular dynamic (MD) simulations of frictional non-thermal particles driven by an externally applied shear stress. After the system jams following a transient flow, we probe its mechanical response in order to clarify whether the resulting solid is 'fragile'. We find the system to respond elastically and isotropically to small perturbations of the shear stress, suggesting absence of fragility. These results are interpreted in terms of the energy landscape of dissipative systems. For the same values of the control parameters, we check the behaviour of the system during a stress cyc…
The impacts of granular jets for both frictional and frictionless grains in two dimensions are numerically investigated. A dense flow with a dead zone emerges during the impact. From our two-dimensional simulation, we evaluate the equations of state and the con- stitutive equations of the flow. The asymptotic divergences of pressure and shear stress similar to the situation near the jamming transition appear for the frictionless case, while their exponents are smaller than those of the sheared granular systems, and are close to the extrapolation from the kinetic theoretical regime. In a simila…
We study the geometry of forces in some simple models for granular stackings. The information contained in geometry is complementary to that in the distribution of forces in a single inter-particle contact, which is more widely studied. We present a method which focuses on the fractal nature of the force network and find good evidence of scale invariance. The method enables us to distinguish universality classes characterized by critical exponents. Our approach can be applied to force networks in other athermal jammed systems.
A granular-matter model is exactly solved, where disks of two sizes and weights in alternating sequence are confined to a narrow channel. The axis of the channel is horizontal and its plane vertical. Disk sizes and channel width are such that under jamming no disks remain loose and all disks touch one wall. Jammed microstates are characterized via statistically interacting particles constructed out of two-disk tiles. Jammed macrostates depend on measures of expansion work, gravitational potential energy, and intensity of random agitations before jamming. The dependence of configurational entro…
Formulating a statistical mechanics for granular matter remains a significant challenge, in part, due to the difficulty associated with a complete characterization of the systems under study. We present a fully characterized model of a granular material consisting of $N$ two-dimensional, frictionless, hard discs, confined between hard walls, including a complete enumeration of all possible jammed structures. We show the properties of the jammed packings are independent of the distribution of defects within the system and that all the packings are isostatic. This suggests the assumption of equa…
Force chains, which are quasi-linear self-organised structures carrying large stresses, are ubiquitous in jammed amorphous materials, such as granular materials, foams, emulsions or even assemblies of cells. Predicting where they will form upon mechanical deformation is crucial in order to describe the physical properties of such materials, but remains an open question. Here we demonstrate that graph neural networks (GNN) can accurately infer the location of these force chains in frictionless materials from the local structure prior to deformation, without receiving any information about the i…
Cooperative jump motions are studied for mutually interacting particles in a one-dimensional periodic potential. The diffusion constant for the cooperative motion in systems including a small number of particles is numerically calculated and it is compared with theoretical estimates. We find that the size distribution of the cooperative jump motions obeys an exponential law in a large system.
Devising a statistical mechanics framework for jammed granular materials is a challenging task as those systems do not share some important properties required to characterize them with statistical thermodynamics tools. In a recent paper [Asenjo et al. PRL, 2014], a new definition of a granular entropy, that puts the protocol used to generate the packings at its roots, has been proposed. Following up these results, it is shown that the protocol used in [Asenjo et al. PRL, 2014] can be recast as a canonical ensemble with a particular value of the temperature. Signature of gaussianity for large …
Granular packings of hard discs are investigated by means of contact dynamics which is an appropriate technique to explore the allowed force-realizations in the space of contact forces. Configurations are generated for given values of the friction coefficient, and then an ensemble of equilibrium forces is found for fixed contacts. We study the force fluctuations within this ensemble. In the limit of zero friction the fluctuations vanish in accordance with the isostaticity of the packing. The magnitude of the fluctuations has a non-monotonous friction dependence. The increase for small friction…
Disks of two sizes and weights in alternating sequence are confined to a long and narrow channel. The axis of the channel is horizontal and its plane vertical. The channel is closed off by pistons that freeze jammed microstates out of loose disk configurations subject to moderate pressure, gravity, and random agitations. Disk sizes and channel width are such that under jamming no disk remains loose and all disks touch one wall. We present exact results for the characterization of jammed macrostates including volume and entropy. The rigorous analysis divides the disk sequences of jammed microst…
In the late 1980s, Sam Edwards proposed a possible statistical-mechanical framework to describe the properties of disordered granular materials. A key assumption underlying the theory was that all jammed packings are equally likely. In the intervening years it has never been possible to test this bold hypothesis directly. Here we present simulations that provide direct evidence that at the unjamming point, all packings of soft repulsive particles are equally likely, even though generically, jammed packings are not. Typically, jammed granular systems are observed precisely at the unjamming poin…
We present a model of traffic flow, with rules that describe the behaviour of automated vehicles in an open system. We show first of all that the fundamental diagram of this system collapses to a point, where states of free and jammed traffic can coexist in phase space. This leads us to consider separately the roles of average velocities and densities as better descriptors of the actual state of the traffic. Next, we observe that the transition between free and jammed traffic as a function of the braking parameter R is different for high and low initial densities, in the steady state; it turns…
We study a model of bacterial dynamics where two interacting random walkers perform run-and-tumble motion on a one-dimensional lattice under mutual exclusion and find an exact expression for the probability distribution in the steady state. This stationary distribution has a rich structure comprising three components: a jammed component, where the particles are adjacent and block each other; an attractive component, where the probability distribution for the distance between particles decays exponentially; and an extended component in which the distance between particles is uniformly distribut…
We study the effect of mergers in the force chain model describing the stress profile in static granular materials. Combining numerical and analytical calculations we show that granular materials do not generally behave in an elastic-like manner, however they may under specific conditions, which are elaborated. Non-elastic behavior resulting from the non-linearity of the full force chain model is discussed.

We study a model of interacting run-and-tumble random walkers operating under mutual hardcore exclusion on a one-dimensional lattice with periodic boundary conditions. We incorporate a finite, Poisson-distributed, tumble duration so that a particle remains stationary whilst tumbling, thus generalising the persistent random walker model. We present the exact solution for the nonequilibrium stationary state of this system in the case of two random walkers. We find this to be characterised by two lengthscales, one arising from the jamming of approaching particles, and the other from one particle …
