Coincident root loci of binary forms

Coincident root loci are subvarieties of $S^d(C^2)$--the space of binary forms of degree $d$--labelled by partitions of $d$. Given a partition $λ$, let $X_λ$ be the set of forms with root multiplicity corresponding to $λ$. There is a natural action of $GL_2(C)$ on $S^d(C^2)$ and the coincident root loci are invariant under this action. We calculate their equivariant Poincaré duals generalizing formulas of Hilbert and Kirwan. Some remarks about equations defining coincident root loci

Consider the projective variety $X_λ$ of binary forms of degree $d$ whose linear factors are distributed according to the partition $λ$ of $d$. We determine minimal sets of local generators of the fiber product of $X_λ$ with its normalization, and we show that the local Jacobian matrices of this product contain the product of the identity matrix of maximal rank with a unit. We use this to fill a gap in a crucial proof in Chipalkatti's "On equations defining Coincident Root Loci". Also, we give a new description of the singular locus of $X_λ$ and a criterion for the smoothness of $X_λ$.

Estimates for zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals

We give estimates for the zero loci of Bernstein-Sato ideals. An upper bound is proved as a multivariate generalisation of the upper bound by Lichtin for the roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials. The lower bounds generalise the fact that log-canonical thresholds, small jumping numbers of multiplier ideals, and their real versions provide roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials.

Roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials of certain homogeneous polynomials with two-dimensional singular loci

For a homogeneous polynomial of $n$ variables, we present a new method to compute the roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomial supported at the origin, assuming that general hyperplane sections of the associated projective hypersurface have at most weighted homogeneous isolated singularities. Calculating the dimensions of certain $E_r$-terms of the pole order spectral sequence for a given integer $r\in[2,n]$, we can detect its degeneration at $E_r$ for certain degrees. Duality of Multiple Root Loci

The multiple root loci among univariate polynomials of degree $n$ are indexed by partitions of $n$. We study these loci and their conormal varieties. The projectively dual varieties are joins of such loci where the partitions are hooks. Our emphasis lies on equations and parametrizations that are useful for Euclidean distance optimization. We compute the ED degrees for hooks. Among the dual hypersurfaces are those that demarcate the set of binary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank.

Local systems on analytic germ complements

We prove that the cohomology jump loci of rank one local systems on the complement in a small ball of a germ of a complex analytic set are finite unions of torsion translates of subtori. This is a generalization of the classical Monodromy Theorem stating that the eigenvalues of the monodromy on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of a germ of a holomorphic function are roots of unity.
