Dark matter particles, even if they are electrically neutral, could interact with the Standard Model particles via their electromagnetic multipole moments. In this paper, we focus on the electromagnetic properties of the complex vector dark matter candidate, which can be described by means of seven form factors. We calculate the differential scattering cross-section with nuclei due to the interactions of the dark matter and nuclear multipole moments, and we derive upper limits on the former from the non-observation of dark matter signals in direct detection experiments. We also present a model where the dark matter particle is a gauge boson of a dark $SU(2)$ symmetry, and which contains heavy new fermions, charged both under the dark $SU(2)$ symmetry and under the electromagnetic $U(1)$ symmetry. The new fermions induce at the one loop level electromagnetic multipole moments, which could lead to detectable signals in direct detection experiments.
In a set of two papers, we propose to study an old-standing problem, namely the electromagnetic interaction for particles of arbitrary spin. Based on the assumption that light-cone helicity at tree level and $Q^2=0$ should be conserved non-trivially by the electromagnetic interaction, we are able to derive \emph{all} the natural electromagnetic moments for a pointlike particle of \emph{any} spin. In this first paper, we propose a transparent decomposition of the electromagnetic current in terms of covariant vertex functions. We also define in a general way the electromagnetic multipole form fa…
We derive model independent, non-perturbative supersymmetric sum rules for the magnetic and electric multipole moments of any theory with N=1 supersymmetry. We find that in any irreducible N=1 supermultiplet the diagonal matrix elements of the l-multipole moments are completely fixed in terms of their off-diagonal matrix elements and the diagonal (l-1)-multipole moments.
We investigate the three-dimensional~(3D) and two-dimensional~(2D) charge distributions of a spin-one particle in terms of the multipole expansion. On account of the geometrical difference between 2D and 3D spaces, projecting the 3D electric distribution to the 2D one in the Breit frame brings about the influence of the quadrupole distribution upon the monopole one. Thus, the 2D charge distribution becomes spin-dependent. This effect should be sorted out from the relativistic effects arising from the Lorentz boost. We first provide the connections between the 2D and 3D distributions in the Bre…
We study multipole decompositions of the electromagnetic currents of spin-1/2, 1, and 3/2 particles described in terms of Lagrangians designed to reproduce representation specific wave equations which are second order in the momenta and which emerge within the recently elaborated Poincaré covariant projector method. We calculate the electric multipoles of the above spins for the spinor, the four-vector, and the four-vector--spinor representations, attend to the most general non-Lagrangian spin-3/2 currents which are allowed by Lorentz invariance to be of third order in the momenta and construc…
We calculate the electromagnetic multipole moments of the $P_c^+(4380)$ pentaquark by modeling it as the diquark-diquark-antiquark and $\bar D^*Σ_c$ molecular state with quantum numbers $J^P = \frac{3}{2}^-$. In particular, the magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of this particle are extracted in the framework of light-cone QCD sum rule. The values of the electromagnetic multipole moments obtained via two pictures differ substantially from each other, which can be used to pin down the underlying structure of $P_c^+(4380)$. The comparison of any future experimenta…
We calculate the charge quadrupole and magnetic octupole moments of baryons using a group theoretical approach based on broken SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry. The latter is an approximate symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian which becomes exact in the large color N_c limit. Spin-flavor symmetry breaking is induced by one-, two-, and three-quark terms in the electromagnetic current operator. Two- and three-quark currents provide the leading contributions for higher multipole moments, despite being of higher order in an 1/N_c expansion. Our formalism leads to relations between N --> N* transition multipol…
We investigate photoproduction of charged $ρ$ off the nucleon using $ρ(770)+π(140)$ Regge pole exchanges by considering the $ρ$-meson electromagnetic multipole moments. The significance of the Ward identity at the $γρρ$ vertex is emphasized for current conservation in the process. Given $π$ exchange with the well-known coupling constants for $γπρ$ and $πNN$, we analyze the role of the $ρ$ exchange in the $γp\to ρ^+n$ and $γn\toρ^-p$ processes without model-dependences except for the magnetic moment $μ_{ρ^\pm}=\pm2.01$ and electric quadrupole moment ${\cal Q}_{ρ^\pm}=\pm0.027$ fm$^2$ taken from…
The electromagnetic multipole moments of the open-flavor $Z_{\bar cq}$ states are investigated by assuming a diquark-antidiquark picture for their internal structure and quantum numbers $J^{PC} = 1^{+-}$ for their spin-parity. In particular, their magnetic and quadrupole moments are extracted in the framework of light-cone QCD sum rule by the help of the photon distribution amplitudes. The electromagnetic multipole moments of the open-flavor $Z_{\bar cq}$ states are important dynamical observables, which encode valuable information on their underlying structure. The results obtained for the ma…
We investigate the electromagnetic properties of possible charm-strange pentaquarks in the framework of the light-cone QCD sum rule using the photon distribution amplitudes. In particular, by calculating the corresponding electromagnetic form factors defining the radiative transitions under consideration we estimate the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the pentaquark systems of a charm, an anti-strange and three light quarks. We observe that the values of magnetic dipole moments are considerably large, however, the quadrupole moments are very small. Any future measurements of…
The charmonium spectrum is calculated with two nonrelativistic quark models, the linear potential model and the screened potential model. Using the obtained wavefunctions, we evaluate the electromagnetic transitions of charmonium states up to $4S$ multiplet. The higher multipole contributions are included by a multipole expansion of the electromagnetic interactions. Our results are in reasonable agreement with the measurements. As conventional charmonium states, the radiative decay properties of the newly observed charmonium-like states, such as $X(3823)$, $X(3872)$, $X(4140/4274)$, are discus…
We briefly review the progress and problems in the electromagnetic production of KLambda on the nucleon. The problem of the data discrepancy in this channel as well as the corresponding physics consequence are highlighted. We also discuss the effect of the new beam-recoil polarization data Cx and Cz on our analysis. For this purpose we use the isobar model Kaon-Maid and a recent multipoles model that can describe recent experimental data. We also present a new multipoles model for the KSigma channels to complete our analysis.
We consider the angular power spectrum in a finite universe with different boundary conditions and perform a fit to the CMB, LSS and supernova data. A finite universe could be the consequence of a holographic constraint, giving rise to an effective IR cutoff at the future event horizon. In such a model there is a cosmic duality relating the dark energy equation of state and the power spectrum, which shows a suppression and oscillatory behaviour that is found to describe the low l features extremely well. However, much of the discussion here will also apply if we actually live inside an expandi…
Magnetic dipole moment form factor, $G_M^{(2)}(Q^2)$, describing the radial excitation of decuplet baryons to octet baryons electromagnetic transitions as well as the ratios, $R_{SM} = -\frac{1}{4 m_2^2} \sqrt{4 m_2^2 Q^2 + (m_2^2 - Q^2 -m_1^2)^2} \frac{G_C^{(2)}(Q^2)}{G_M^{(2)}(Q^2)}$ and $R_{EM} = -\frac{G_E^{(2)}(Q^2)}{G_M^{(2)}(Q^2)}$ are calculated in the framework of light-cone sum rules. We also estimate the degree of the violation of U-spin symmetry. The obtained results for the multipole form factors can be useful in searching the properties of radially excited baryon states.
We investigate a possible connection between the suppression of the power at low multipoles in the CMB spectrum and the late time acceleration. We show that, assuming a cosmic IR/UV duality between the UV cutoff and a global infrared cutoff given by the size of the future event horizon, the equation of state of the dark energy can be related to the apparent cutoff in the CMB spectrum. The present limits on the equation of state of dark energy are shown to imply an IR cutoff in the CMB multipole interval of 9>l>8.5.
We examine the hadronic interactions of quarkonia, focusing on the decays psi(2s)->psi pi pi and upsilon(2s)-> upsilon pi pi. The leading gluonic operators in the multipole expansion are matched onto the chiral lagrangian with the coefficients fit to available data, both at tree-level and loop-level in the chiral expansion. A comparison is made with naive expectations loosely based on the large-$N_c$ limit of QCD in an effort to determine the reliability of this limit for other observables, such as the binding of $\ps$ to nuclei. Crossing symmetry is used to estimate the cross-section for inel…
The electromagnetic transition moments of the $SU(3)$-flavor baryon octet to decuplet are examined within a lattice simulation of quenched QCD. The magnetic transition moment for the $N \; γ\to Δ$ channel is found to be in agreement with recent experimental analyses. The lattice results indicate $μ_{p Δ} / μ_p = 0.88(15)$. In terms of the Particle Data Group convention, $f_{M1} = 0.231(41)$ GeV${}^{-1/2}$ for $p \; γ\to Δ^+$ transitions. Lattice predictions for the hyperon $M1$ transition moments agree with those of a simple quark model. However the manner in which the quarks contribute to the…
The annihilation of dark matter particles in the halo of galaxies may end up into gamma rays, which travel almost unperturbed till to their detection at Earth. This annihilation signal can exhibit an anisotropic behavior quantified by the angular power spectrum, whose properties strongly depend on the dark matter distribution and its clumpiness. We use high resolution pure dark matter N-body simulations to quantify the contribution of different components (main halo and satellites) to the global signal as a function of the analytical profile adopted to describe the numerical results. We find t…
The charged wave packets with non-Gaussian spatial profiles are shown to possess intrinsic multipole moments. The magnetic dipole moment and the electric quadrupole moment are found for a wide class of the packets, including the vortex electrons with orbital angular momentum $\ell$, the Airy beams, the so-called Schrödinger's cat states, and their generalizations. For the packets with no phase vortices, the electric quadrupole moment is shown to grow quadratically with the packet's width, $|Q_{αβ}| \sim e\cdot σ_{\perp}^2$, while it is also $|\ell|$ times enhanced for the vortex beams. For ava…
We consider dark matter which have non-zero electromagnetic form factors like electric/magnetic dipole moments and anapole moment for fermionic dark matter and Rayleigh form factor for scalar dark matter. We consider dark matter mass $m_χ> \cal{ O}({\rm MeV})$ and put constraints on their mass and electromagnetic couplings from CMB and LSS observations. Fermionic dark matter with non-zero electromagnetic form factors can annihilate to $e^+ e^-$ and scalar dark matter can annihilate to $2γ$ at the time of recombination and distort the CMB. We analyze dark matter with multipole moments with Plan…
A quantum state of an electron influences its electromagnetic field. If a spatial profile of the electron wave packet is not Gaussian, the particle may acquire additional intrinsic multipole moments, which alter its field, especially at small distances. Here the fields of a vortex electron with orbital angular momentum $\ell$ are obtained in a form of a multipole expansion with an electric quadrupole term kept by using the generalized (non-paraxial) Laguerre-Gaussian beams. The quadrupole contribution arises beyond a paraxial approximation, is linearly enhanced for highly twisted packets with …
Dark matter in the form of particles from a hidden mirror sector has recently been proposed as an explanation for the DAMA annual modulation signal. Here one assumes that there exists a small mixing between photons and mirror photons. We show that dark matter with this property can also be detected in electromagnetic field penetration experiments. Such experiments can be used to measure the speed and direction of the dark matter halo wind, the local density, the temperature, and the strength of the photon-mirror photon mixing interaction. An additional result would be a significant improvement…
The introduction of Dark Matter-neutrino interactions modifies the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular power spectrum at all scales, thus affecting the reconstruction of the cosmological parameters. Such interactions can lead to a slight increase of the value of $H_0$ and a slight decrease of $σ_8$, which can help reduce somewhat the tension between the CMB and lensing or Cepheids datasets. Here we show that it is impossible to solve both tensions simultaneously. While the 2015 Planck temperature and low multipole polarisation data combined with the Cepheids datasets prefer large values …
We constrain deviations of the form $T\propto (1+z)^{1+ε}$ from the standard redshift-temperature relation, corresponding to modifying distance duality as $D_L=(1+z)^{2(1+ε)} D_A$. We consider a consistent model, in which both the background and perturbation equations are changed. For this purpose, we introduce a species of dark radiation particles to which photon energy density is transferred, and assume $ε\ge0$. The Planck 2015 release high multipole temperature plus low multipole data give the limit $ε<4.5\times 10^{-3}$ at 95% C.L. The main obstacle to improving this CMB-only result is str…
Dark matter candidates with electromagnetic dipole moments can arise as dark baryons in gauge-mediated or technicolor models. These dark matter candidates interact with nuclei in direct detection experiments mainly through magnetic and/or electric dipole moments. The scattering cross sections depend on the nuclear magnetic moments and nuclear charge and have an infrared enhancement compared with typical WIMP constant contact interactions, leading to distinctive nuclear recoil energy spectra. These characteristics result in an enhanced signal for the DAMA experiment compared with the CDMS or XE…
A neutral dark matter particle may possess an electric dipole moment (EDM) or a magnetic dipole moment (MDM), so that its scattering with nuclei is governed by electromagnetic interactions. If the moments are associated with relevant operators of dimension-5, they may be detectable in direct search experiments. We calculate complete expressions of the scattering cross sections and the recoil energy spectra for dark matter with these attributes. We also provide useful formulae pertinent to dark matter that interacts via an electric charge form factor (CFF) which is related to the charge radius …
Current constraints on energy injection in the form of energetic particles before the epoch of recombination using CMB spectral distortions assume that all energy goes into $y$ and $μ$-type distortions. We revisit these constraints with exact calculations of the spectral distortions by evolving the electromagnetic cascades. The actual spectral distortion differs in shape and amplitude from the $y$-type distortion and depends on the energy and nature of injected particles. The constraints on the energy injection processes such as dark matter decay can be relaxed by as much as a factor of 5.
The hypothetical massive dark photon ($γ'$) which has kinetic mixing with the SM photon can decay electromagnetically to $e^+e^-$ pairs if its mass $m$ exceeds $2m_e$ and otherwise into three SM photons. These decays yield cosmological and supernovae associated signatures. We briefly discuss these signatures, particularly in connection with the supernova SN1987A and delineate the extra constraints that may then arise on the mass and mixing parameter of the dark photon. In particular, we find that for dark photon mass $m_{γ'}$ in the 5-20 MeV range, arguments based on supernova 1987A observatio…
