Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a challenging problem that needs advanced solutions than using handcrafted features to achieve a desirable performance. Deep learning has been proposed as a solution to obtain more accurate HAR systems being robust against noise. In this paper, we introduce ARC-Net and propose the utilization of capsules to fuse the information from multiple inertial measurement units (IMUs) to predict the activity performed by the subject. We hypothesize that this network will be able to tune out the unnecessary information and will be able to make more accurate decisions through the iterative mechanism embedded in capsule networks. We provide heatmaps of the priors, learned by the network, to visualize the utilization of each of the data sources by the trained network. By using the proposed network, we were able to increase the accuracy of the state-of-the-art approaches by 2%. Furthermore, we investigate the directionality of the confusion matrices of our results and discuss the specificity of the activities based on the provided data.

This paper presents Capsule GAN, a Generative adversarial network using Capsule Network not only in the discriminator but also in the generator. Recently, Generative adversarial networks (GANs) has been intensively studied. However, generating images by GANs is difficult. Therefore, GANs sometimes generate poor quality images. These GANs use convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, CNNs have the defect that the relational information between features of the image may be lost. Capsule Network, proposed by Hinton in 2017, overcomes the defect of CNNs. Capsule GAN reported previously uses C…

In this paper we introduce a new inductive bias for capsule networks and call networks that use this prior $γ$-capsule networks. Our inductive bias that is inspired by TE neurons of the inferior temporal cortex increases the adversarial robustness and the explainability of capsule networks. A theoretical framework with formal definitions of $γ$-capsule networks and metrics for evaluation are also provided. Under our framework we show that common capsule networks do not necessarily make use of this inductive bias. For this reason we introduce a novel routing algorithm and use a different traini…

We first formalize neural networks in a mathematical definition, give their directed graph representations, and prove a generation theorem about the induced networks of connected directed acyclic graphs. Then, using the concept of capsule to extend neural networks, we set up a capsule-unified framework for deep learning, including a mathematical definition of capsules, an induced model for capsule networks and a universal backpropag…

This approach focuses on implementing a robust routing scheme, which can deliver improved results using little overhead. We per…
In this paper, we propose Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architectures that use Capsule Networks for image-synthesis. Based on the principal of positional-equivariance of features, Capsule Network's ability to encode spatial relationships between the features of the image helps it become a more powerful critic in comparison to Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) used in current architectures for image synthesis. Our proposed GAN architectures learn the data manifold much faster and therefore, synthesize visually accurate images in significantly lesser number of training samples and trai…
A recently proposed method in deep learning groups multiple neurons to capsules such that each capsule represents an object or part of an object. Routing algorithms route the output of capsules from lower-level layers to upper-level layers. In this paper, we prove that state-of-the-art routing procedures decrease the expressivity of capsule networks. More precisely, it is shown that EM-routing and routing-by-agreement prevent capsule networks from distinguishing inputs and their negative counterpart. Therefore, only symmetric functions can be expressed by capsule networks, and it can be conclu…

The purpose of this study is to predict EUR/USD stock behavior using Capsule Network on finance texts and Candlestick images. One of the m…
Capsule network has shown various advantages over convolutional neural network (CNN). It keeps more precise spatial information than CNN and uses equivariance instead of invariance during inference and highly potential to be a new effective tool for visual tasks. However, the current capsule networks have incompatible performance with CNN when facing datasets with background and complex target objects and are lacking in universal and efficient regularization method. We analyze a main reason of the incompatible performance as the conflict between information sensitiveness of capsule network and…
We propose an interpretable Capsule Network, iCaps, for image classification. A capsule is a group of neurons nested inside each layer, and the one in the last layer is called a class capsule, which is a vector whose norm indicates a predicted probability for the class. Using the class capsule, existing Capsule Networks already provide some level of interpretability. However, there are two limitations which degrade its interpretability: 1) the class capsule also includes classification-irrelevant information, and 2) entities represented by the class capsule overlap. In this work, we address th…

Text classification systems based on contextual embeddings are not viable options for many of the low resource languages. On the other hand, recently introduced capsule networks have shown performance in par with these text classification models. Thus, they could be considered as a viable alternative for text classification for languages that do not have pre-trained contextual embedding models. However, current capsule networks depend upon spatial patterns without considering the sequential features of the text. They are also sub-optimal in capturing the context-level information in longer seq…

Unsupervised learning of compact and relevant state representations has been proved very useful at solving complex reinforcement learning tasks. Capsule network (CapsNet) was introduced as an enhancement over convolutional neural networks, supplementing the latter's invariance properties with equivariance through pose estimation. CapsNet achieved a very decent performance with a shallow architecture and a significant reduction in parameters count. However, the width of the first layer in CapsNet is still contributing to a significant number of its parameters and the shallowness may be limiting the representational power of the capsules. This project considers Capsule Networks, a recently introduced machine learning model that has shown promising results regarding generalization and preservation of spatial information with few parameters. In this project, we propose two distinct ways in which the routing procedure can be learned like any other network parameter.
Capsules are the multidimensional analogue to scalar neurons in neural networks, and because they are multidimensional, much more complex routing schemes can be used to pass information forward through the network than what can be used in traditional neural networks. This work treats capsules as collections of neurons in a fully connected neural network, where sub-networks connecting capsules are weighted according to the routing coefficients determined by routing by agreement. An energy function is designed to reflect this model, and it follows that capsule networks with dynamic routing can b…
