We present an information geometric analysis of both entropic speeds and entropy production rates arising from geodesic evolution on manifolds parametrized by pure quantum states. In particular, we employ pure states that emerge as outputs of suitably chosen su(2; C) time-dependent Hamiltonian operators that characterize analog quantum search algorithms of specific types. The su(2; C) Hamiltonian models under consideration are specified by external time-dependent magnetic fields within which spin-1/2 test particles are immersed. The positive definite Riemannian metrization of the parameter manifold is furnished by the Fisher information function. The Fisher information function is evaluated along parametrized squared probability amplitudes obtained from the temporal evolution of these spin-1/2 test particles. A minimum action approach is then utilized to induce the transfer of the quantum system from its initial state to its final state on the parameter manifold over a finite temporal interval. We demonstrate in an explicit manner that the minimal (that is, optimum) path corresponds to the shortest (that is, geodesic) path between the initial and final states. Furthermore, we show that the minimal path serves also to minimize the total entropy production occurring during the transfer of states. Finally, upon evaluating the entropic speed as well as the total entropy production along optimal transfer paths within several scenarios of physical interest in analog quantum searching algorithms, we demonstrate in a transparent quantitative manner a correspondence between a faster transfer and a higher rate of entropy production. We therefore conclude that higher entropic speed is associated with lower entropic efficiency within the context of quantum state transfer.
Hastings disproved additivity conjecture for minimum output entropy by using random unitary channels. In this note, we employ his approach to show that minimum output $p-$Rényi entropy is non-additive for $p\in(0,p_0)\cup(1-p_0,1)$ where $p_0\approx 0.2855$.
Discovery of quantized electric conductance by the group of van Wees in 1988 was a major breakthrough in physics. Later, the group of Schwab has proven the existence of quantized thermal conductance. Advancing one step further, we present that quantized entropy current can be interpreted and it ease the description of a transferred quantized energy package. This might yield a universal transport behavior of the microscopic world. During the transfer of a single energy quantum, $h ν$ between two neighboring domains the minimum entropy increment is calculated. Furthermore, the possible existence…
We give a direct proof of the additivity of the minimum output entropy of a particular quantum channel which breaks the multiplicativity conjecture. This yields additivity of the classical capacity of this channel, a result obtained by a different method by Matsumoto and Yura [quant-ph/0306009]. Our proof relies heavily upon certain concavity properties of the output entropy which are of independent interest.
We introduce a model of non-Gaussian quantum channel that stems from the combination of two physically relevant processes occurring in open quantum systems, namely amplitude damping and dephasing. For it we find input states approaching zero output entropy, while respecting the input energy constraint. These states fully exploit the infinite dimensionality of the Hilbert space. Upon truncation of the latter, the minimum output entropy remains finite and optimal input states for such a case are conjectured thanks to numerical evidences.
The von Neumann entropy at the output of a bosonic channel with thermal noise is analyzed. Coherent-state inputs are conjectured to minimize this output entropy. Physical and mathematical evidence in support of the conjecture is provided. A stronger conjecture--that output states resulting from coherent-state inputs majorize the output states from other inputs--is also discussed.
We introduce two additive invariants of output quantum channels. If the value of one these invariants is less than 1 then the logarithm of the inverse of its value is a positive lower bound for the regularized minimum entropy of an output quantum channel. We give a few examples in which one of these invariants is less than 1. We also study the special cases where the above both invariants are equal to 1.
In the context of many-fermion systems, "correlation" refers to the inadequacy of an independent-particle model. Using "free" states as archetypes of our independent-particle model, we have proposed a measure of correlation that we called "nonfreeness" [Int. J. Quant. Inf. 5, 815 (2007)]. The nonfreeness of a many-fermion state was defined to be its entropy relative to the unique free state with the same 1-matrix. In this article, we prove that the nonfreeness of a state is the minimum of its entropy relative to all free states. We also extend the definition of nonfreeness to many-boson states…
We study subadditivity of the minimum output entropy ($H_{min}$) of quantum multiple access channels (MACs). We provide an example of violation of the additivity theorem for $H_{min}$ known in classical information theory. Our result is based on a fundamental property of $MACs$ i.e. independence of each sender. The channels used in the example can be constructed explicitly. On the basis of subadditivity of $H_{min}$ we also provide an example of extremal superadditivity (super activation) of the classical capacity region of MACs.
We address quantum estimation in situations where one has at disposal data from the measurement of an incomplete set of observables and some a priori information on the state itself. By expressing the a priori information in terms of a bias toward a given state the problem may be faced by minimizing the quantum relative entropy (Kullback entropy) with the constraint of reproducing the data. We exploit the resulting minimum Kullback entropy principle for the estimation of a quantum state from the measurement of a single observable, either from the sole mean value or from the complete probabilit…
A longstanding open problem in quantum information theory is to find the classical capacity of an optical communication link, modeled as a Gaussian bosonic channel. It has been conjectured that this capacity is achieved by a random coding of coherent states using an isotropic Gaussian distribution in phase space. We show that proving a Gaussian minimum entropy conjecture for a quantum-limited amplifier is actually sufficient to confirm this capacity conjecture, and we provide a strong argument towards this proof by exploiting a connection between quantum entanglement and majorization theory.
We show that the minimum output entropy for all single-mode Gaussian channels is additive and is attained for Gaussian inputs. This allows the derivation of the channel capacity for a number of Gaussian channels, including that of the channel with linear loss, thermal noise, and linear amplification.
We consider a line with noise in the simplest case. Loss does not add noise. Amplification via phase insensitive amplifiers do add noise. A lower bound of this capacity is the quantum analog to the Shannon capacity of a linear channel with additive white Gaussian noise, namely the difference of the Von Neumann entropy of the signal plus noise at the output of the line and the entropy of the noise alone. We show that this expression is indeed the capacity for the case of an amplifier with infinitesimal gain $G = 1+ε$, and for a cascade of an amplifier with arbitrary gain and a large loss, such …
Hastings recently reported a randomized construction of channels violating the minimum output entropy additivity conjecture. Here we revisit his argument, presenting a simplified proof. In particular, we do not resort to the exact probability distribution of the Schmidt coefficients of a random bipartite pure state, as in the original proof, but rather derive the necessary large deviation bounds by a concentration of measure argument. Furthermore, we prove non-additivity for the overwhelming majority of channels consisting of a Haar random isometry followed by partial trace over the environmen…
Previous work on the classical information capacities of bosonic channels has established the capacity of the single-user pure-loss channel, bounded the capacity of the single-user thermal-noise channel, and bounded the capacity region of the multiple-access channel. The latter is a multi-user scenario in which several transmitters seek to simultaneously and independently communicate to a single receiver. We study the capacity region of the bosonic broadcast channel, in which a single transmitter seeks to simultaneously and independently communicate to two different receivers. It is known that…
We present an information geometric characterization of quantum driving schemes specified by su(2;C) time-dependent Hamiltonians in terms of both complexity and efficiency concepts. By employing a minimum action principle, the optimum path connecting initial and final states on the manifold in finite-time is the geodesic path between the two states. In particular, the total entropy production that occurs during the transfer is minimized along these optimum paths. For each optimum path that emerges from the given quantum driving scheme, we evaluate the so-called information geometric complexity…
Complementing recent progress on the additivity conjecture of quantum information theory, showing that the minimum output p-Renyi entropies of channels are not generally additive for p>1, we demonstrate here by a careful random selection argument that also at p=0, and consequently for sufficiently small p, there exist counterexamples. An explicit construction of two channels from 4 to 3 dimensions is given, which have non-multiplicative minimum output rank; for this pair of channels, numerics strongly suggest that the p-Renyi entropy is non-additive for all p < 0.11. We conjecture however that…
We introduce a new form for the bosonic channel minimal output entropy conjecture, namely that among states with equal input entropy, the thermal states are the ones that have slightest increase in entropy when sent through a infinitesimal thermalizing channel. We then detail a strategy to prove the conjecture through variational techniques. This would lead to the calculation of the classical capacity of a communication channel subject to thermal noise. Our strategy detects input thermal ensembles as possible solutions for the optimal encoding of the channel, lending support to the conjecture.…
We show how to determine the maximum and minimum possible values of one measure of entropy for a given value of another measure of entropy. These maximum and minimum values are obtained for two standard forms of probability distribution (or quantum state) independent of the entropy measures, provided the entropy measures satisfy a concavity/convexity relation. These results may be applied to entropies for classical probability distributions, entropies of mixed quantum states and measures of entanglement for pure states.
We show that the minimum von-Neumann entropy output of a quantum channel is locally additive. Hasting's counterexample for the additivity conjecture, makes this result quite surprising. In particular, it indicates that the non-additivity of the minimum entropy output is a global effect of quantum channels.
It is known that the additivity conjecture of Holevo capacity, output minimum entoropy, and the entanglement of formation (EoF), are equivalent with each other. Among them, the output minimum entropy is simplest, and hence many researchers are focusing on this quantity. Here, we suggest yet another entanglement measure, whose strong superadditivity and additivity are equivalent to the additivity of the quantities mentioned above. This quantity is as simple as the output minimum entropy, and in existing proofs of additivity conjecture of the output minimum entropy for the specific examples, the…
We present an information geometric analysis of entropic speeds and entropy production rates in geodesic evolution on manifolds of parametrized quantum states. These pure states emerge as outputs of suitable su(2; C) time-dependent Hamiltonian operators used to describe distinct types of analog quantum search schemes. The Riemannian metrization on the manifold is specified by the Fisher information evaluated along the parametrized squared probability amplitudes obtained from analysis of the temporal quantum mechanical evolution of a spin-1/2 particle in an external time-dependent magnetic fiel…
The minimum entropy output is computed for rotationally invariant quantum channels acting on spin-1/2 and spin-1 systems. For the case of two parallel such channels and initial entangled (singlet) state the entropy of the output is higher then the doubled minimal entropy output of the single channel. This gives a certain moral support to the additivity hypothesis. Another related simple function of the channel (minimum entropy gain) is shown to be additive in general.
We present the Shannon entropy as an indicator of spatial resolution for morphology of resonance mode pattern in dielectric micro cavity. We obtain two types of optimized mesh point for the minimum and maximum sizes, respectively. The critical mesh point for the minimum size is determined by the barely identifiable quantum number through chi square test whereas the saturation of difference of the Shannon entropy corresponds to the maximum size. We can also show that the critical mesh point increases as the (real) wave number of eigenvalue trajectory increases and estimate the proportional cons…
Information-theoretic aspects of quantum inseparability of mixed states are investigated in terms of the $α$-entropy inequalities and teleportation fidelity. Inseparability of mixed states is defined and a complete characterization of the inseparable $2\times2$ systems with maximally disordered subsystems is presented within the Hilbert-Schmidt space formalism. A connection between teleportation and negative conditional $α$-entropy is also emphasized.
We present a constructive example of violation of additivity of minimum output Rényi entropy for each p>2. The example is provided by antisymmetric subspace of a suitable dimension. We discuss possibility of extension of the result to go beyond p>2 and obtain additivity for p=0 for a class of entanglement breaking channels.
The minimum Kullback entropy principle (mKE) is a useful tool to estimate quantum states and operations from incomplete data and prior information. In general, the solution of a mKE problem is analytically challenging and an approximate solution has been proposed and employed in different context. Recently, the form and a way to compute the exact solution for finite dimensional systems has been found, and a question naturally arises on whether the approximate solution could be an effective substitute for the exact solution, and in which regimes this substitution can be performed. Here, we prov…
We consider sequences of random quantum channels defined using the Stinespring formula with Haar-distributed random orthogonal matrices. For any fixed sequence of input states, we study the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution of the outputs through tensor powers of random channels. We show that the input states achieving minimum output entropy are tensor products of maximally entangled states (Bell states) when the tensor power is even. This phenomenon is completely different from the one for random quantum channels constructed from Haar-distributed random unitary matrices, which leads us to fo…
We propose a general framework for solving quantum state estimation problems using the minimum relative entropy criterion. A convex optimization approach allows us to decide the feasibility of the problem given the data and, whenever necessary, to relax the constraints in order to allow for a physically admissible solution. Building on these results, the variational analysis can be completed ensuring existence and uniqueness of the optimum. The latter can then be computed by standard, efficient standard algorithms for convex optimization, without resorting to approximate methods or restrictive…

We show that the minimum Renyi entropy output of a quantum channel is locally additive for Renyi parameter alpha>1. While our work extends the results of [10] (in which local additivity was proven for alpha=1), it is based on several new techniques that incorporate the multiplicative nature of p-norms, in contrast to the additivity property of the von-Neumann entropy. Our results demonstrate that the counterexamples to the Renyi additivity conjectures exhibit global effects of quantum channels. Interestingly, the approach presented here can not be extended to Renyi entropies with parameter alp…
The relative entropy of a correlated state and an uncorrelated reference state is a reasonable measure for the degree of correlations. A key question is however which uncorrelated state to compare to. The relative entropy becomes minimal for the uncorrelated reference state that has the same one-particle density matrix as the correlated state. Hence, this particular measure, coined nonfreeness, is unique and reasonable. We demonstrate that for relevant physical situations, such as finite temperatures or a correlation enhanced orbital splitting, other choices of the uncorrelated state, even edu…
We show that the (normalized) symmetric Laplacian of a simple graph can be obtained from the partial trace over a pure bipartite quantum state that resides in a bipartite Hilbert space (one part corresponding to the vertices, the other corresponding to the edges). This suggests an interpretation of the symmetric Laplacian's Von Neumann entropy as a measure of bipartite entanglement present between the two parts of the state. We then study extreme values for a connected graph's generalized Rényi-$p$ entropy. Specifically, we show that (1) the complete graph achieves maximum entropy, (2) the $2$…
Given an arbitrary quantum state ($σ$), we obtain an explicit construction of a state $ρ^*_\varepsilon(σ)$ (resp. $ρ_{*,\varepsilon}(σ)$) which has the maximum (resp. minimum) entropy among all states which lie in a specified neighbourhood ($\varepsilon$-ball) of $σ$. Computing the entropy of these states leads to a local strengthening of the continuity bound of the von Neumann entropy, i.e., the Audenaert-Fannes inequality. Our bound is local in the sense that it depends on the spectrum of $σ$. The states $ρ^*_\varepsilon(σ)$ and $ρ_{*,\varepsilon}(σ)$ depend only on the geometry of the $\var…
This is an extended version of our short report hep-th/0603001, where a holographic interpretation of entanglement entropy in conformal field theories is proposed from AdS/CFT correspondence. In addition to a concise review of relevant recent progresses of entanglement entropy and details omitted in the earlier letter, this paper includes the following several new results : We give a more direct derivation of our claim which relates the entanglement entropy with the minimal area surfaces in the AdS_3/CFT_2 case as well as some further discussions on higher dimensional cases. Also the relation …

In a previous paper, we proved that the limit of the collection of possible eigenvalues of output states of a random quantum channel is a deterministic, compact set K_{k,t}. We also showed that the set K_{k,t} is obtained, up to an intersection, as the unit ball of the dual of a free compression norm. In this paper, we identify the maximum of l^p norms on the set K_{k,t} and prove that the maximum is attained on a vector of shape (a,b,...,b) where a > b. In particular, we compute the precise limit value of the minimum output entropy of a single random quantum channel. As a corollary, we show t…
Optical channels, such as fibers or free-space links, are ubiquitous in today's telecommunication networks. They rely on the electromagnetic field associated with photons to carry information from one point to another in space. As a result, a complete physical model of these channels must necessarily take quantum effects into account in order to determine their ultimate performances. Specifically, Gaussian photonic (or bosonic) quantum channels have been extensively studied over the past decades given their importance for practical purposes. In spite of this, a longstanding conjecture on the o…
We investigate minimum output (Rényi) entropy of qubit channels and unital quantum channels. We obtain an exact formula for the minimum output entropy of qubit channels, and bounds for unital quantum channels. Interestingly, our bounds depend only on the operator norm of the matrix representation of the channels on the space of trace-less Hermitian operators. Moreover, since these bounds respect tensor products, we get bounds for the capacity of unital quantum channels, which is saturated by the Werner-Holevo channel. Furthermore, we construct an orthonormal basis, besides the Gell-Mann basis,…
Determining the ultimate classical information carrying capacity of electromagnetic waves requires quantum-mechanical analysis to properly account for the bosonic nature of these waves. Recent work has established capacity theorems for bosonic single-user, broadcast, and wiretap channels, under the presumption of two minimum output entropy conjectures. Despite considerable accumulated evidence that supports the validity of these conjectures, they have yet to be proven. Here we show that the preceding minimum output entropy conjectures are simple consequences of an Entropy Photon-Number Inequal…
We prove two new fundamental uncertainty relations with quantum memory for the Wehrl entropy. The first relation applies to the bipartite memory scenario. It determines the minimum conditional Wehrl entropy among all the quantum states with a given conditional von Neumann entropy and proves that this minimum is asymptotically achieved by a suitable sequence of quantum Gaussian states. The second relation applies to the tripartite memory scenario. It determines the minimum of the sum of the Wehrl entropy of a quantum state conditioned on the first memory quantum system with the Wehrl entropy of…
In this article, we explore properties of pseudo entropy [1] in quantum field theories and spin systems from several approaches. Pseudo entropy is a generalization of entanglement entropy such that it depends on both an initial and final state and has a clear gravity dual via the AdS/CFT. We numerically analyze a class of free scalar field theories and the XY spin model. This reveals the basic properties of pseudo entropy in many-body systems, namely, the area law behavior, the saturation behavior, and the non-positivity of difference between the pseudo entropy and averaged entanglement entrop…
For all 1 < p < 2, we demonstrate the existence of quantum channels with non-multiplicative maximal p-norms. Equivalently, the minimum output Renyi entropy of order p of a quantum channel is not additive for all 1 < p < 2. The violations found are large. As p approaches 1, the minimum output Renyi entropy of order p for a product channel need not be significantly greater than the minimum output entropy of its individual factors. Since p=1 corresponds to the von Neumann entropy, these counterexamples demonstrate that if the additivity conjecture of quantum information theory is true, it cannot …
A definition for the entanglement entropy in a gauge theory was given recently in arXiv:1501.02593. Working on a spatial lattice, it involves embedding the physical state in an extended Hilbert space obtained by taking the tensor product of the Hilbert space of states on each link of the lattice. This extended Hilbert space admits a tensor product decomposition by definition and allows a density matrix and entanglement entropy for the set of links of interest to be defined. Here, we continue the study of this extended Hilbert space definition with particular emphasis on the case of Non-Abelian…
