We study properties of a $p-$type subcritical branching process in random environment initiated at moment zero by a vector $\mathbf{z}=\left( z_{1},..,z_{p}\right) $\ of particles of different types. Assuming that the process belongs to the class of the so-called strongly subcritical processes we show that its survival probability to moment $n$\ behaves for large $n$\ as $C(\mathbf{z})λ^{n}$\ where $λ$\ is the upper Lyapunov exponent for the product of mean matrices of the process and $C(\mathbf{z})$% \ is an explicitly given constant. We also demonstrate that the limiting conditional distribution of the number of particles given the survival of the process for a long time does not depend on the vector $\mathbf{z}$ of the number of particles initiated the process.
We show the existance of the stationary distributions of subcritical multitype Galton-Watson processes without any conditions on the mean matrix of the offspring distributions. Some additional properties of the stationary distribution are also proven.
In this short note we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the moments of the stationary distribution of a subcritical multitype Galton-Watson process with immigration.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the probability of non extinction of a weakly subcritical multitype branching process in iid random environments. Under suitable assumptions, the survival probability is of order of $ρ^n n ^{-3/2}$ for some $ρ\in (0, 1)$ to specify.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the survival probability of a multitype branching process in random environment. The class of processes we consider here corresponds, in the one-dimensional situation, to the strongly subcritical case. We also prove a conditional limit theorem describing the distribution of the number of particles in the process given its survival for a long time.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the survival probability of a multi-type branching processes in random environment. The class of processes we consider corresponds, in the one-dimensional situation, to the intermediately subcritical case. We show under rather general assumptions on the form of the offspring generating functions of particles that the probability of survival up to generation $n$ of the process initiated at moment zero by a single particle of any type is of order $λ^{n}n^{-1/2}$ for large $n,$ where $λ\in (0,1)$ is a constant specified by the Lyapunov exponent of the mean mat…
We first study the convergence of solutions of a system of F-KPP equations related to irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions with Heaviside-type initial conditions to traveling wave solutions. Then we apply this convergence result to prove that the extremal processes of irreducible multitype branching Brownian motions converges weakly to a cluster point process.
We introduce a Poissonization method to study the coalescent structure of uniform samples from branching processes. This method relies on the simple observation that a uniform sample of size $k$ taken from a random set with positive Lebesgue measure may be represented as a mixture of Poisson samples with rate $λ$ and mixing measure $k \mathrm{d} λ/ λ$. We develop a multitype analogue of this mixture representation, and use it to characterise the coalescent structure of multitype continuous-state branching processes in terms of random multitype forests. Thereafter we study the small time asympt…
By the methods of multitype branching processes in random environment counted by random characteristics we study the tail distribution of busy periods and some other characteristics of the branching type polling systems in which the service disciplines, input parameters and service time distributions are changing in a random manner.

We consider multitype branching processes arising in the study of random laminations of the disk. We classify these processes according to their subcritical or supercritical behavior and provide Kolmogorov-type estimates in the critical case corresponding to the random recursive lamination process of [1]. The proofs use the infinite dimensional Perron-Frobenius theory and quasi-stationary distributions.
For multitype branching processes with immigration evolving in a random environment and producing a final product we find the tail distribution of the size of the final product accumulated in the system for a life period. Using this result we investigate the tail distribution of the busy periods of the branching type polling systems with random service disciplines and random positive switch-over times
Motivated by tumor growth models we establish conditions for the $R-$positivity of Markov processes and positive matrices. We then apply them to obtain the asymptotic behavior of the tumors sizes in the supercritical regime.
In this paper, we provide a pathwise spine decomposition for multitype superdiffusions with non-local branching mechanisms under a martingale change of measure. As an application of this decomposition, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition (called the $L\log L$ criterion) for the limit of the fundamental martingale to be non-degenerate. This result complements the related results for superprocesses with purely local branching mechanisms and in Kyprianou and Palau (2016) for super Markov chains.
Limit behaviour of temporal and contemporaneous aggregations of independent copies of a stationary multitype Galton-Watson branching process with immigration is studied in the so-called iterated and simultaneous cases, respectively. In both cases, the limit process is a zero mean Brownian motion with the same covariance function under third order moment conditions on the branching and immigration distributions. We specialize our results for generalized integer-valued autoregressive processes and single-type Galton-Watson processes with immigration as well.
By extending the breadth first search algorithm to any d-type critical or subcritical irreducible branching forest, we show that such forests may be encoded through d independent, integer valued, d-dimensional random walks. An application of this coding together with a multivariate extension of the Ballot Theorem which is proved here, allow us to give an explicit form of the law of the total progeny, jointly with the number of subtrees of each type, in terms of the offspring distribution of the branching process. We then apply these results to some enumeration formulas of multitype forests wit…
The forest of mutations associated to a multitype branching forest is obtained by merging together all vertices of its clusters and by preserving connections between them. We first show that the forest of mutations of any mulitype branching forest is itself a branching forest. Then we give its progeny distribution and describe some of its crucial properties in terms the initial progeny distribution. We also obtain the limiting behaviour of the number of mutations both when the total number of individuals tends to infinity and when the number of roots tends to infinity. The continuous time case…
In a multitype branching process, it is assumed that immigrants arrive according to a nonhomogeneous Poisson or a generalized Polya process (both processes are formulated as a nonhomogeneous birth process with an appropriate choice of transition intensities). We show that the renormalized numbers of objects of the various types alive at time $t$ for supercritical, critical, and subcritical cases jointly converge in distribution under those two different arrival processes. Furthermore, some transient moment analysis when there are only two types of particles is provided. AMS 2000 subject classi…
Motivated by the stochastic Lotka-Volterra model, we introduce discrete-state interacting multitype branching processes. We show that they can be obtained as the sum of a multidimensional random walk with a Lamperti-type change proportional to the population size; and a multidimensional Poisson process with a time-change proportional to the pairwise interactions. We define the analogous continuous-state process as the unique strong solution of a multidimensional SDE. We prove that the scaling limits of the discrete-state process correspond to its continuous counterpart. In addition, we show th…
A multitype continuous-state branching process (MCSBP) ${\rm Z}=({\rm Z}_{t})_{t\geq 0}$, is a Markov process with values in $[0,\infty)^{d}$ that satisfies the branching property. Its distribution is characterised by its branching mechanism, that is the data of $d$ Laplace exponents of $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued spectrally positive Lévy processes, each one having $d-1$ increasing components. We give an expression of the probability for a MCSBP to tend to 0 at infinity in term of its branching mechanism. Then we prove that this extinction holds at a finite time if and only if some condition bearing…
Using the annealed approach we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the survival probability of a critical multitype branching process evolving in i.i.d. random environment. We show under rather general assumptions on the form of the offspring generating functions of particles that the probability of survival up to generation $n$ of the process initiated at moment zero by a single particle of type $i$ is equivalent to $c_{i}n^{-1/2}$ for large $n,$ where $c_{i}$ is a positive constant. Earlier such asymptotic representation was known only for the case of the fractional linear offspring gener…
In this paper, we provide a construction of the so-called backbone decomposition for multitype supercritical superprocesses. While backbone decompositions are fairly well-known for both continuous-state branching processes and superprocesses in the one-type case, so far no such decompositions or even description of prolific genealogies have been given for the multitype cases. Here we focus on superprocesses, but by turning the movement off, we get the prolific backbone decomposition for multitype continuous-state branching processes as an easy consequence of our results.
We consider a multitype branching process with immigration in a random environment introduced by Key in [Ann. Probab. 15 (1987) 344--353]. It was shown by Key that, under the assumptions made in [Ann. Probab. 15 (1987) 344--353], the branching process is subcritical in the sense that it converges to a proper limit law. We complement this result by a strong law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the partial sums of the process. In addition, we study the asymptotic behavior of oscillations of the branching process, that is, of the random segments between successive times when the e…
In this paper, we first form a method to calculate the probability generating function of the total progeny of multitype branching process. As examples, we calculate probability generating function of the total progeny of the multitype branching processes within random walk which could stay at its position and (2-1) random walk. Consequently, we could give the probability generating functions and the distributions of the hitting time of corresponding random walks.
We study a discrete time multitype branching random walk on a finite space with finite set of types. Particles follow a Markov chain on the spatial space whereas offspring distributions are given by a random field that is fixed throughout the evolution of the particles. Our main interest lies in the averaged (annealed) expectation of the population size, and its long-time asymptotics. We first derive, for fixed time, a formula for the expected population size with fixed offspring distributions, which is reminiscent of a Feynman-Kac formula. We choose Weibull-type distributions with parameter $…
A multitype Dawson-Watanabe process is conditioned, in subcritical and critical cases, on non-extinction in the remote future. On every finite time interval, its distribution is absolutely continuous with respect to the law of the unconditioned process. A martingale problem characterization is also given. Several results on the long time behavior of the conditioned mass process|the conditioned multitype Feller branching diffusion are then proved. The general case is first considered, where the mutation matrix which models the interaction between the types, is irreducible. Several two-type mode…
This paper gives conditions for the rightmost particle in the $n$th generation of a multitype branching random walk to have a speed, in the sense that its location divided by n converges to a constant as n goes to infinity. Furthermore, a formula for the speed is obtained in terms of the reproduction laws. The case where the collection of types is irreducible was treated long ago. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of the number in the nth generation to the right of na is obtained. The initial motive for considering the reducible case was results for a deterministic spatial population model …
In this paper we establish a weak and a strong law of large numbers for supercritical superprocesses with general non-local branching mechanisms. Our results complement earlier results obtained for superprocesses with only local branching. Several interesting examples are developed, including multitype continuous-state branching processes, multitype superdiffusions and superprocesses with discontinuous spatial motions and non-decomposable branching mechanisms.
A particular continuous-time multitype branching process is considered, it is the continuous-time embedding of a discrete-time process which is very popular in theoretical computer science: the m-ary search tree (m is an integer). There is a well-known phase transition: when m \leq 26, the asymptotic behavior of the process is Gaussian, but for m \geq 27 it is no more Gaussian and a limit W of a complex-valued martingale arises. Thanks to the branching property it appears as a solution of a smoothing equation of the type Z = e^{-λT}(Z(1) + ... + Z(m)), where λ \in C, the Z(k) are independent c…
We obtain a bijection between some set of multidimensional sequences and this of $d$-type plane forests which is based on the breadth first search algorithm. This coding sequence is related to the sequence of population sizes indexed by the generations, through a Lamperti type transformation. The same transformation in then obtained in continuous time for multitype branching processes with discrete values. We show that any such process can be obtained from a $d^2$ dimensional compound Poisson process time changed by some integral functional. Our proof bears on the discretisation of branching f…
We consider a critical branching particle system in $\R^d$, composed of individuals of a finite number of types $i\in\{1,...,K\}$. Each individual of type $i$ moves independently according to a symmetric $α_i$-stable motion. We assume that the particle lifetimes and offspring distributions are type-dependent. Under the usual independence assumptions in branching systems, we prove extinction theorems in the following cases: (1) all the particle lifetimes have finite mean, or (2) there is a type whose lifetime distribution has heavy tail, and the other lifetimes have finite mean. We get a more c…

Let $A$ be a primitive matrix and let $λ$ be its Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue. We give formulas expressing the associated normalized Perron-Frobenius eigenvector as a simple functional of a multitype Galton-Watson process whose mean matrix is $A$, as well as of a multitype branching process with mean matrix $e^{(A-I)t}$. These formulas are generalizations of the classical formula for the invariant probability measure of a Markov chain.
We study the distribution of ages in the mean field forest fire model introduced by Ráth and Tóth. This model is an evolving random graph whose dynamics combine Erdős-Rényi edge-addition with a Poisson rain of lightning strikes. All edges in a connected component are deleted when any of its vertices is struck by lightning. We consider the asymptotic regime of lightning rates for which the model displays self-organized criticality. The age of a vertex increases at unit rate, but it is reset to zero at each burning time. We show that the empirical age distribution converges as a process to a det…
This paper considers the relative frequencies of distinct types of individuals in multitype branching processes. We prove that the frequencies are asymptotically multivariate normal when the initial number of ancestors is large and the time of observation is fixed. The result is valid for any branching process with a finite number of types; the only assumption required is that of independent individual evolutions. The problem under consideration is motivated by applications in the area of cell biology. Specifically, the reported limiting results are of advantage in cell kinetics studies where …
For a discrete time multitype supercritical Galton-Watson process $(Z_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ and corresponding genealogical tree $\mathbb{T}$, we associate a new discrete time process $(Z_n^Φ)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ such that, for each $n\in \mathbb{N}$, the contribution of each individual $u\in\mathbb{T}$ to $Z_n^Φ$ is determined by a (random) characteristic $Φ$ evaluated at the age of $u$ at time $n$. In other words, $Z_n^Φ$ is obtained by summing over all $u\in \mathbb{T}$ the corresponding contributions $Φ_u$, where $(Φ_u)_{u\in \mathbb{T}}$ are i.i.d. copies of $Φ$. Such processes are known in …
For supercritical multitype branching processes in continuous time, we investigate the evolution of types along those lineages that survive up to some time t. We establish almost-sure convergence theorems for both time and population averages of ancestral types (conditioned on non-extinction), and identify the mutation process describing the type evolution along typical lineages. An important tool is a representation of the family tree in terms of a suitable size-biased tree with trunk. As a by-product, this representation allows a `conceptual proof' (in the sense of Kurtz, Lyons, Pemantle, Pe…
We provide a simple forest model to encode the genealogical structure of a multitype Galton-Watson process with immigration. We provide two encodings of these forests by stochastic processes. We show, under appropriate conditions, the depth-first encodings of each particular type converge to a solution to a system of stochastic integral equations involving height processes perturbed by functionals of their local times. The forest picture allows us to extend the Ray-Knight theorem and show that local time of the solution to the system of equations form a multitype continuous state branching pro…
A homogeneous mass-fragmentation, as it has been defined in \cite{RFC}, describes the evolution of the collection of masses of fragments of an object which breaks down into pieces as time passes. Here, we show that this model can be enriched by considering also the types of the fragments, where a type may represent, for instance, a geometrical shape, and can take finitely many values. In this setting, the dynamics of a randomly tagged fragment play a crucial role in the analysis of the fragmentation. They are determined by a Markov additive process whose distribution depends explicitly on the …
By decomposing the random walk path, we construct a multitype branching process with immigration in random environment for corresponding random walk with bounded jumps in random environment. Then we give two applications of the branching structure. Firstly, we specify the explicit invariant density by a method different with the one used in Brémont [3] and reprove the law of large numbers of the random walk by a method known as the environment viewed from particles". Secondly, the branching structure enables us to prove a stable limit law, generalizing the result of Kesten-Kozlov-Spitzer [11] …
We consider a two-type reducible branching Brownian motion, defined as a particle system on the real line in which particles of two types move according to independent Brownian motion and create offspring at constant rate. Particles of type $1$ can give birth to particles of types $1$ and $2$, but particles of type $2$ only give birth to descendants of type $2$. Under some specific conditions, Biggins (2012) shows that this process exhibit an anomalous spreading behaviour: the rightmost particle at time $t$ is much further than the expected position for the rightmost particle in a branching Br…
This note gives an exponential tail approximation for the extinction time of a subcritical multitype branching process arising from the SIR epidemic model on a random graph with given degrees, where the type corresponds to the vertex degree. As a corollary we obtain a Gumbel limit law for the extinction time, when beginning with a large population. Our contribution is to allow countably many types (this corresponds to unbounded degrees in the random graph epidemic model, as the number of vertices tends to infinity). We only require a second moment for the offspring-type distribution featuring …
We consider a branching stable process with positive jumps, i.e. a continuous-time branching process in which the particles evolve independently as stable L{é}vy processes with positive jumps. Assuming the branching mechanism is critical or subcritical, we compute the asymptotics of the maximum location ever reached by a particle of the process.
Intermediately subcritical branching processes in random environment are at the borderline between two subcritical regimes and exhibit a particularly rich behavior. In this paper, we prove a functional limit theorem for these processes. It is discussed together with two other recently proved limit theorems for the intermediately subcritical case and illustrated by several computer simulations.
Conditioning a multitype Galton-Watson process to stay alive into the indefinite future leads to what is known as its associated $Q$-process. We show that the same holds true if the process is conditioned to reach a positive threshold or a non-absorbing state. We also demonstrate that the stationary measure of the $Q$-process, obtained by construction as two successive limits (first by delaying the extinction in the original process and next by considering the long-time behavior of the obtained $Q$-process), is as a matter of fact a double limit. Finally, we prove that conditioning a multitype…
Lower and upper bounds for the cumulative distribution function (cdf) of the time to extinction in a subcritical two-sex branching process are derived. A recursive procedure for approximating this cdf is also utilized. The results are illustrated with some simulations.
We consider branching process evolving in i.i.d. random environment. It is assumed that the process is intermediately subcritical. We investigate the initial stage of the evolution of the process given its survival for a long time.
We consider a subcritical Galton--Watson tree conditioned on having $n$ vertices with outdegree in a fixed set $Ω$. Under mild regularity assumptions we prove various limits related to the maximal offspring of a vertex as $n$ tends to infinity.
We consider the subcritical contact branching random walk on Zd in continuous time with the arbitrary number of offspring and with immigration. We prove the existence of the steady state (statistical equilibrium).
