We present analytical results for the Euclidean 2-point correlator of the flavor-singlet vector current evolved by the gradient flow at next-to-leading order ($O(g^2)$) in perturbatively massless QCD-like theories. We show that the evolved 2-point correlator requires multiplicative renormalization, in contrast to the nonevolved case, and confirm, in agreement with other results in the literature, that such renormalization ought to be identified with a universal renormalization of the evolved elementary fermion field in all evolved fermion-bilinear currents, whereas the gauge coupling renormalizes as usual. We explicitly derive the asymptotic solution of the Callan-Symanzik equation for the connected 2-point correlators of these evolved currents in the limit of small gradient-flow time $\sqrt{t}$, at fixed separation $|x-y|$. Incidentally, this computation determines the leading coefficient of the operator-product expansion (OPE) in the small $t$ limit for the evolved currents in terms of their local nonevolved counterpart. Our computation also implies that, in the evolved case, conservation of the vector current, hence transversality of the corresponding 2-point correlator, is no longer related to the nonrenormalization, in contrast to the nonevolved case. Indeed, for small flow time the evolved vector current is conserved up to $O(t)$ softly violating effects, despite its $t$-dependent nonvanishing anomalous dimension.
We clarify the physical origin of the difference between gauge properties of conserved currents in abelian and nonabelian theories. In the latter, but not in the former, such currents can always be written on shell as gauge invariants modulo identically conserved, superpotential, terms. For the ``isotopic" vector and the stress tensor currents of spins 1 and 2 respectively, we explain this difference by the fact that the non-abelian theories are just the self-coupled versions of the abelian ones using these currents as sources. More precisely, we indicate how the self-coupling turns the non-in…
The exact quantum $S$-matrices and conserved charges are known for affine Toda field theories(ATFTs). In this note we report on a new type of bi-linear sum rules of conserved quantities derived from these exact $S$ matrices. They exist when there is a multiplicative identity among $S$-matrices of a particular ATFT. Our results are valid for simply laced as well as non-simply laced ATFTs. We also present a few explicit examples.
In order to illustrate a recently derived covariant formalism for computing asymptotic symmetries and asymptotically conserved superpotentials in gauge theories, the case of gravity with minimally coupled scalar fields is considered and the matter contribution to the asymptotically conserved superpotentials is computed.
The exact eigenvalues of the infinite set of conserved charges on the multi-particle states in affine Toda theories are determined. This is done by constructing a free field realization of the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra in which the conserved charges are realized as derivative operators. The resulting eigenvalues are renormalization group (RG) invariant, have the correct classical limit and pass checks in first order perturbation theory. For $n=1$ one recovers the (RG invariant form of the) quantum masses of Destri and DeVega.
We study the application of our recent holographic entanglement negativity conjecture for mixed states of adjacent subsystems in conformal field theories with a conserved charge. In this context we obtain the holographic entanglement negativity for zero and finite temperature mixed state configurations in $d$-dimensional conformal field theories dual to bulk extremal and non extremal charged $AdS_{d+1}$ black holes. Our results conform to quantum information theory expectations and constitute significant consistency checks for our conjecture.
This paper deals with the problem of defining off-shell conserved charges in a set of theories known as Chern-Simons-like theories of gravity (CSLTG). The method is derived in a general way, which may find applications in a wide set of theories, and then specified to the case of Generalized minimal massive gravity (GMMG), where known results of the central charge and black hole entropy are reproduced. The results for the charges are useful to the community and can be applied to all three-dimensional gravity theories within the class of CSLTG which includes almost all of them. The given specifi…
Previously, we have developed a general method to construct invariant conserved currents and charges in gravitational theories with Lagrangians that are invariant under spacetime diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations. This approach is now generalized to the case when the local Lorentz group is replaced by an arbitrary local gauge group. The particular examples include the Maxwell and Yang-Mills fields coupled to gravity with Abelian and non-Abelian local internal symmetries, and the metric-affine gravity in which the local Lorentz spacetime group is extended to the local general li…
We consider $N=1$ supersymmetric Toda theories which admit a fermionic untwisted affine extension, i.e. the systems based on the $A(n,n)$, $D(n+1,n)$ and $B(n,n)$ superalgebras. We construct the superspace Miura trasformations which allow to determine the W-supercurrents of the conformal theories and we compute their renormalized expressions. The analysis of the renormalization and conservation of higher-spin currents is then performed for the corresponding supersymmetric massive theories. We establish the quantum integrability of these models and show that although their Lagrangian is not her…
In this paper we present the generalization of Chern-Simons-like theories of gravity (CSLTG) to spin-3. We propose a Lagrangian describing the spin-3 fields coupled to Chern-Simons-like theories of gravity. Then we obtain conserved charges of these theories by using a quasi-local formalism. We find a general formula for entropy of black holes solutions of Spin-3 CSLTG. As an example, we apply our formalism to the spin-3 Generalized minimal massive gravity (GMMG) model. We analysis this model at linearized level and show that this model propagate two massive spin-2 modes and two massive spin-3 …
We study the renormalization and conservation at the quantum level of higher-spin currents in affine Toda theories with particular emphasis on the nonsimply-laced cases. For specific examples, namely the spin-3 current for the $a_3^{(2)}$ and $c_2^{(1)}$ theories, we prove conservation to all-loop order, thus establishing the existence of factorized S-matrices. For these theories, as well as the simply-laced $a_2^{(1)}$ theory, we compute one-loop corrections to the corresponding higher-spin charges and study charge conservation for the three-particle vertex function. For the $a_3^{(2)}$ theor…
We study how fermion number conservation fails in fermion number preserving regularization schemes. We show that the fermion number have to be carried by the gauge field configurations with non-zero winding number in this scheme and this fermion number is not conserved in the presence of instantons. We also consider other types of regularization scheme which have different global symmetries. In particular, we point out that the fermion number is conserved in the lattice chiral gauge theories with the Wilson-Yukawa coupling.
We study unitary conformal field theories with a unique stress tensor and at least one higher-spin conserved current in four dimensions. We prove that every such theory contains an infinite number of higher-spin conserved currents of arbitrarily high spin, and that Ward identities generated by the conserved charges of these currents suffice to completely fix the correlators of the stress tensor and the conserved currents to be equal to one of three free field theories: the free boson, the free fermion, and the free vector field. This is a generalization of the result proved in three dimensions…
The vacuum expectation values of conserved currents play an essential role in the generalized hydrodynamics of integrable quantum field theories. We use analytic continuation to extend these results for the excited state expectation values in a finite volume. Our formulas are valid for diagonally scattering theories and incorporate all finite size corrections.
The recently-developed techniques of Noether analysis of the quantum-group spacetime symmetries of some noncommutative field theories rely on the {\it ad hoc} introduction of some peculiar auxiliary transformation parameters, which appear to have no role in the structure of the quantum group. We here show that it is possible to set up the Noether analysis directly in terms of the quantum-group symmetry transformations, and we therefore establish more robustly the attribution of the conserved charges to the symmetries of interest. We also characterize the concept of "time independence" (as need…
We consider $n$-dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in higher curvature gravitational theories with $n \geq 4$, by employing the conformal completion technique. We first argue that a condition on the Ricci tensor should be supplemented to define an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime in higher curvature gravitational theories and propose an alternative definition of an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Based on that definition, we then derive a conservation law of the gravitational field and construct conserved quantities in two classes of higher curvature gravitati…
We give a detailed review of construction of conserved quantities in extended theories of gravity for asymptotically maximally symmetric spacetimes and carry out explicit computations for various solutions. Our construction is based on the Killing charge method, and a proper discussion of the conserved charges of extended gravity theories with this method requires studying the corresponding charges in Einstein's theory with or without a cosmological constant. Hence we study the ADM charges (in the asymptotically flat case but in generic viable coordinates), the AD charges (in generic Einstein …
We study the conserved charges of affine Toda field theories by making use of the conformally invariant extension of these theories. We compute the values of all charges for the single soliton solutions, and show that these are related to eigenvectors of the Cartan matrix of the finite-dimensional Lie algebra underlying the theory.
We consider a class of theories with unfree gauge symmetry, whose gauge parameters are restricted by differential equations. We demonstrate that such theories admit global conserved quantities, whose on-shell values are defined by asymptotics of the fields rather than Cauchy data. The global conserved quantities can be deduced proceeding from the equations restricting gauge parameters, and they are treated differently by two BRST complexes corresponding to a system with unfree gauge symmetry.
The Chern-Simons-like theories of gravity (CSLTG) are formulated at first order formalism. In this formalism, the derivation of the entropy of a black hole on bifurcation surface, as a quasi-local conserved charge is problematic. In this paper we overcome to these problems by considering the concept of total variation and the Lorentz-Lie derivative. We firstly find an expression for the ADT conserved current in the context of the CSLTG which is based on the concept of the Killing vector fields. Then, we generalize it to be conserved for all diffeomorphism generators. Thus, we can extract an of…
We study the constraints imposed by the existence of a single higher spin conserved current on a three dimensional conformal field theory. A single higher spin conserved current implies the existence of an infinite number of higher spin conserved currents. The correlation functions of the stress tensor and the conserved currents are then shown to be equal to those of a free field theory. Namely a theory of N free bosons or free fermions. This is an extension of the Coleman-Mandula theorem to CFT's, which do not have a conventional S matrix. We also briefly discuss the case where the higher spi…
Mass and other conserved Noether charges are discussed for solutions of gravity theories with locally Anti-de Sitter asymptotics in 2n dimensions. The action is supplemented with a boundary term whose purpose is to guarantee that it reaches an extremum on the classical solutions, provided the spacetime is locally AdS at the boundary. It is also shown that if spacetime is locally AdS at spatial infinity, the conserved charges are finite and properly normalized without requiring subtraction of a reference background. In this approach, Noether charges associated to Lorentz and diffeomorphism inva…
We discuss conservation laws for gravity theories invariant under general coordinate and local Lorentz transformations. We demonstrate the possibility to formulate these conservation laws in many covariant and noncovariant(ly looking) ways. An interesting mathematical fact underlies such a diversity: there is a certain ambiguity in a definition of the (Lorentz-) covariant generalization of the usual Lie derivative. Using this freedom, we develop a general approach to construction of invariant conserved currents generated by an arbitrary vector field on the spacetime. This is done in any dimens…
We compute current correlators of the CP^{N-1} field theory in 2+1 dimensions, both at the critical point and in the phase with spontaneously broken SU(N) symmetry. Universal constants are obtained to next-to-leading order in the 1/N expansion. Implications are noted for quantum critical points of antiferromagnets, and their vicinity.
In general relativity, the notion of mass and other conserved quantities at spatial infinity can be defined in a natural way via the Hamiltonian framework: Each conserved quantity is associated with an asymptotic symmetry and the value of the conserved quantity is defined to be the value of the Hamiltonian which generates the canonical transformation on phase space corresponding to this symmetry. However, such an approach cannot be employed to define `conserved quantities' in a situation where symplectic current can be radiated away (such as occurs at null infinity in general relativity) becau…
Restricting the covariant gravitational phase spaces to the manifold of parametrized families of solutions, the mass, angular momenta, entropies, and electric charges can be calculated by a single and simple method. In this method, which has been called "solution phase space method," conserved charges are unambiguous and regular. Moreover, assuming the generators of the charges to be exact symmetries, entropies and other conserved charges can be calculated on almost arbitrary surfaces, not necessarily horizons or asymptotics. Hence, the first law of thermodynamics would be a local identity rel…
We investigate the extension of a holographic construction for the entanglement negativity of two disjoint subsystems in proximity to $CFT_d$s with a conserved charge dual to bulk $AdS_{d+1}$ geometries. The construction involves a specific algebraic sum of the areas of bulk co-dimension two static minimal surfaces homologous to certain appropriate combinations of the subsystems in question. In this connection we compute the holographic entanglement negativity for two disjoint subsystems in proximity, with long rectangular strip geometries in $CFT_d$s dual to bulk non extremal and extremal RN-…
We extend the Abbott-Deser-Tekin procedure of defining conserved quantities of asymptotically constant-curvature spacetimes, and give an analogous expression for the conserved charges of geometries that are solutions of quadratic curvature gravity models in generic D-dimensions and that have arbitrary asymptotes possessing at least one Killing isometry. We show that the resulting charge expression correctly reduces to its counterpart when the background is taken to be a space of constant curvature and, moreover, is background gauge invariant. As applications, we compute and comment on the ener…
Motivated by the recent work on critical gravity theories in dimensions D>3, we reexamine the results in [arXiv:hep-th/0501044], where the conformal mass definition of Ashtekar, Magnon and Das (AMD) for asymptotically AdS space-times was generalized to incorporate curvature squared terms. The results in [arXiv:hep-th/0501044] appear to contradict the findings in critical gravity, where, using the methods of Deser and Tekin, black holes were shown to have zero mass. We show that after correcting an error in [arXiv:hep-th/0501044], the AMD approach actually produces results in complete agreement…
For the exploration of the phase diagram of QCD, effective Polyakov loop theories derived from lattice QCD provide a valuable tool in the heavy quark mass regime. In practice, the evaluation of these theories is complicated by the appearance of long-range and multipoint interaction terms. On the other hand, it is well known that for theories with such kind of interactions mean field approximations can be expected to yield reliable results. Here, we apply this framework to the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition and results are compared to the literature. This treatment can also b…
A construction of conservation laws and conserved quantities for perturbations in arbitrary metric theories of gravity is developed. In an arbitrary field theory, with the use of incorporating an auxiliary metric into the initial Lagrangian covariantized Noether identities are carried out. Identically conserved currents with corresponding superpotentials are united into a family. Such a generalized formalism of the covariantized identities gives a natural basis for constructing conserved quantities for perturbations. A new family of conserved currents and correspondent superpotentials for pert…
We present a simple formula for all the conserved charges of soliton theories, evaluated on the solutions belonging to the orbit of the vacuum under the group of dressing transformations. For pedagogical reasons we perform the explicit calculations for the case of the sine-Gordon model, taken as a prototype of soliton theories. We show that the energy and momentum are boundary terms for all the solutions on the orbit of the vacuum. That orbit includes practically all the solutions of physical interest, namely solitons, multi-solitons, breathers, and combinations of solitons and breathers. The …
QCD with a finite baryon chemical potential, despite its importance, is not well understood because the standard lattice QCD simulation is not applicable due to the sign problem. Although sign-free QCD-like theories have been studied intensively, relation to QCD with a finite baryon chemical potential was not clear until recently. In this talk we explain the large-Nc equivalences between QCD and various QCD-like theories, which lead us to a unified viewpoint for QCD with baryon and isospin chemical potentials, SO(2Nc) and Sp(2Nc) gauge theories. In particular two-flavor QCD with the baryon che…
We argue that the whole or the part of the phase diagrams of QCD and QCD-like theories should be universal in the large-N_c limit through the orbifold equivalence. The whole phase diagrams, including the chiral phase transitions and the BEC-BCS crossover regions, are identical between SU(N_c) QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. Outside the BEC-BCS crossover region in these theories, the phase diagrams are also identical to that of SU(N_c) QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We give examples of the universal…
We consider an extension of Lipatov's conjecture about the deep relation between amplitudes in the high-energy limit of QCD and XXX Heisenberg chains with non-compact spins.
We show the universality of phase diagrams in QCD and QCD-like theories through the large-N_c equivalence. The whole phase diagrams are identical between QCD at finite isospin chemical potential and SO(2N_c) and Sp(2N_c) gauge theories at finite baryon chemical potential. In the chiral limit, they are also identical to that of QCD at finite chiral chemical potential. Outside the pion or diquark condensed phase in these theories, the universality of phase diagrams is applicable to QCD at finite baryon chemical potential. We further argue that the universality may work approximately even for N_c…
It has been recently discovered that the $\text{T}\bar{\text{T}}$ deformation is closely-related to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. At classical level, the introduction of this perturbation induces an interaction between the stress-energy tensor and space-time and the deformed EoMs can be mapped, through a field-dependent change of coordinates, onto the corresponding undeformed ones. The effect of this perturbation on the quantum spectrum is non-perturbatively described by an inhomogeneous Burgers equation. In this paper, we point out that there exist infinite families of models where the geometry …
We consistently couple simple continuum field theories with fracton excitations to curved spacetime backgrounds. We consider homogeneous and isotropic fracton field theories, with a conserved $U(1)$ charge and dipole moment. Coupling to background fields allows us to consistently define a stress-energy tensor for these theories and obtain the respective Ward identities. Along the way, we find evidence for a mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly in the symmetric tensor gauge theory which naturally couples to conserved dipoles. Our results generalise to systems with arbitrarily higher conserved mome…
In this paper, we investigate the conserved charges of generally diffeomorphism invariant gravity theories with a wide variety of matter fields, particularly of the theories with multiple scalar fields and $p$-form potentials, in the context of the off-shell generalized Abbott-Deser-Tekin (ADT) formalism. We first construct a new off-shell ADT current that consists of the terms for the variation of a Killing vector and expressions of the field equations as well as the Lie derivative of a surface term with respect to the Killing vector within the framework of generally diffeomorphism invariant …
Decay amplitudes for mesons in two-dimensional QCD are discussed. We show that in spite of an infinite number of conserved charges, particle production is not entirely suppressed. This phenomenon is explained in terms of quantum corrections to the combined algebra of higher-conserved and spectrum-generating currents. We predict the qualitative form of particle production probabilities and verify that they are in agreement with numerical data. We also discuss four-dimensional self-dual Yang-Mills theory in the light of our results.
The implications of conformal invariance, as relevant in quantum field theories at a renormalisation group fixed point, are analysed with particular reference to results for correlation functions involving conserved currents and the energy momentum tensor. Ward identities resulting from conformal invariance are discussed. Explicit expressions for two and three point functions, which are essentially determined by conformal invariance, are obtained. As special cases we consider the three point functions for two vector and an axial current in four dimensions, which realises the usual anomaly simp…
A Lagrangian approach is proposed and developed to study defects within affine Toda field theories. In particular, a suitable Lax pair is constructed together with examples of conserved charges. It is found that only those models based on $a_r^{(1)}$ data appear to allow defects preserving integrability. Surprisingly, despite the explicit breaking of Lorentz and translation invariance, modified forms of both energy and momentum are conserved. Some, but apparently not all, of the higher spin conserved charges are also preserved after the addition of contributions from the defect. This fact is i…
We show that the Painlevé test is useful not only for probing (non-)integrability but also for finding the values of spins of conserved currents (W currents) in Toda field theories (TFTs). In the case of the TFTs based on simple Lie algebras the locations of resonances are shown to give precisely the spins of conserved W currents. We apply this test to TFTs based on strictly hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras and show that there exist no resonances other than that at n=2, which corresponds to the energy-momentum tensor, indicating their non-integrability. We also check by direct calculation that th…
We exploit the potential and power of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral supervariables to derive the proper (anti-)BRST symmetries for the reparameterization invariant one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) toy models of the free relativistic particle as well as free spinning (i.e. supersymmetric) relativistic particle within the framework of (anti-)chiral supervariable approach to BRST formalism. Despite the (anti-)chiral super expansions of the (anti-)chiral supervariables, we observe that the (anti-)BRST charges, for the above toy models, tur…
We note that S-matrix/conserved charge identities in affine Toda field theories of the type recently noted by Khastgir can be put on a more systematic footing. This makes use of a result first found by Ravanini, Tateo and Valleriani for theories based on the simply-laced Lie algebras (A,D and E) which we extend to the nonsimply-laced case. We also present the generalisation to nonsimply-laced cases of the observation - for simply-laced situations - that the conserved charges form components of the eigenvectors of the Cartan matrix.
The dynamics with an infrared stable fixed point in the conformal window in QCD like theories with a relatively large number of fermion flavors is reviewed. The emphasis is on the description of a clear signature for the conformal window, which in particular can be useful for lattice computer simulations of these gauge theories.
We consider the general higher derivative field theories of derived type. At free level, the wave operator of derived-type theory is a polynomial of the order $n\geq 2$ of another operator $W$ which is of the lower order. Every symmetry of $W$ gives rise to the series of independent higher order symmetries of the field equations of derived system. In its turn, these symmetries give rise to the series of independent conserved quantities. In particular, the translation invariance of operator $W$ results in the series of conserved tensors of the derived theory. The series involves $n$ independent…
In these lectures I review some basic examples of how the concepts of universality and scaling can be used to study aspects of the chiral and the deconfinement transition, if not in QCD directly but in QCD-like theories. As an example for flavor dynamics I discuss a quark-hadron model to describe the phase diagram of two-color QCD with the functional renormalization group. Universal aspects of deconfinement are illustrated mainly in the 2+1 dimensional SU(N) gauge theories with second order transition where many exact results from spin models can be exploited.
In this paper we study the near horizon symmetry algebra of the non-extremal black hole solutions of the Chern-Simons-like theories of gravity, which are stationary but are not necessarily spherically symmetric. We define the extended off-shell ADT current which is an extension of the generalized ADT current. We use the extended off-shell ADT current to define quasi-local conserved charges such that they are conserved for Killing vectors and asymptotically Killing vectors which depend on dynamical fields of the considered theory. We apply this formalism to the Generalized Minimal Massive Gravi…
Given a conserved and traceless energy-momentum tensor and a conformal Killing vector, one obtains a conserved current. We generalise this construction to superconformal theories in three, four, five and six dimensions with various amounts of supersymmetry by working in the appropriate superspaces.
Explicit expressions are constructed for a locally conserved vector current associated with a continuous internal symmetry and for energy-momentum and angular-momentum density tensors associated with the Poincaré group in field theories with higher-order derivatives and in non-local field theories. An example of non-local charged scalar field equations with broken C and CPT symmetries is considered. For this case, we find simple analytical expressions for the conserved currents.
