We analyse dark matter (DM) produced somehow in space-time is charged under the hidden $U^{\prime} (1)$ gauge symmetry and interacting with Standard Model (SM) through the scale invariance breaking sector containing dilatons and dark photons (DP). We find the solutions for DM and DP in terms of observables. The DM observable is under DP field shape influence. DP is the natural mediator between DM and the SM sectors. The phenomenology of DP physics and the registration of dark photons are discussed.
We introduce an $SU(2)_X^{}$ dark sector without any fermions and then realize a non-abelian kinetic mixing between the dark $SU(2)_X^{}$ gauge fields and the standard model $SU(2)_L^{}\times U(1)_Y^{}$ gauge fields. While one of the dark gauge bosons becomes a dark photon, the others can keep stable to form a dark matter particle. The nearly degenerate masses of dark photon and dark matter could be tested if the dark photon and the dark matter are both observed in the future.
To connect the scalar field (acceleron) responsible for dark energy to neutrinos, the usual strategy is to add unnaturally light neutral singlet fermions (right-handed neutrinos) to the Standard Model. A better choice is actually a Higgs triplet, through the coupling of the acceleron to the trilinear Higgs triplet-double-doublet interaction. This hypothesis predicts an easily observable doubly-charged Higgs boson at the forthcoming Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
We study the production of ultra-light dark photons from a network of near-global, Abelian-Higgs cosmic strings. We find that dark photons produced in this way are nonrelativistic today and can make up all of the dark matter for dark photon masses as small as $m_A \sim 10^{-22} \, \mathrm{eV}$.
We present a new mechanism for producing the correct relic abundance of dark photon dark matter over a wide range of its mass, extending down to $10^{-20}\,\mathrm{eV}$. The dark matter abundance is initially stored in an axion which is misaligned from its minimum. When the axion starts oscillating, it efficiently transfers its energy into dark photons via a tachyonic instability. If the dark photon mass is within a few orders of magnitude of the axion mass, $m_{γ'}/m_a = {\cal O}(10^{-3} - 1)$, then dark photons make up the dominant form of dark matter today. We present a numerical lattice si…
We consider a generic dark photon that arises from a hidden $U(1)$ gauge symmetry imposed on right-handed neutrinos ($ν_{R}$). Such a $ν_{R}$-philic dark photon is naturally dark due to the absence of tree-level couplings to normal matter. However, loop-induced couplings to charged leptons and quarks are inevitable, provided that $ν_{R}$ mix with left-handed neutrinos via Dirac mass terms. We investigate the loop-induced couplings and find that the $ν_{R}$-philic dark photon is not inaccessibly dark, which could be of potential importance to future dark photon searches at SHiP, FASER, Belle-II…
The dark photon and the axion (or axion-like particle) are popular light particles of the hidden sector. Each of them has been actively searched for through the couplings called the vector portal and the axion portal. We introduce a new portal connecting the dark photon and the axion (axion--photon--dark photon, axion--dark photon--dark photon), which emerges in the presence of the two particles. This dark axion portal is genuinely new couplings, not just from a product of the vector portal and the axion portal, because of the internal structure of these couplings. We present a simple model th…
Radiatively decaying dark matter may be searched through investigating the photon spectrum of galaxies and galaxy clusters. We explore whether the properties of dark matter can be constrained through the study of a polarization state of emitted photons. Starting from the basic principles of quantum mechanics we show that the models of symmetric dark matter are indiscernible by the photon polarization. However, we find that the asymmetric dark matter consisted of Dirac fermions is a source of circularly polarized photons, calling for the experimental determination of the photon state.
Dark matter particles may interact with other dark matter particles via a new force mediated by a dark photon, $A^{\prime}$, which would be the dark-sector analog to the ordinary photon of electromagnetism. The dark photon can obtain a highly suppressed mixing-induced coupling to the electromagnetic current, providing a portal through which dark photons can interact with ordinary matter. This review focuses on $A^{\prime}$ scenarios that are potentially accessible to accelerator-based experiments. We summarize the existing constraints placed by such experiments on dark photons, highlight what …
An extension to the original dark photon model is proposed, by a generalization of matrix transformation with any angle θ of orthogonal rotation. Not only all the results presented by the dark photon model have been accurately reproduced, but new horizons have been opened by exploring new fields induced by this generalization, with new possibilities in the investigation and research of dark photon in particular and dark matter in general.
Motivated by the growing interest in the existence of new massive gauge bosons, we suggest that massive dark photons A0 can be a consequence of a broken new abelian symmetry U(1)'X. Such a dark symmetry U(1)'D is afterwards supposed to be associated with the conservation of the weak number W belonging to the Weakling Interacting Slim Particles U(1)'W, being a strong candidate for Hot Dark Matter. The latters correspond then to light dark photons m'A inf keV from a weak symmetry breaking scale sup 10keV.
Dark photons may kinetically mix with our photon and modify Maxwell's equations. We examine their impact on the Lorentz force acting on the plasma in astrophysical magnetospheres. Solving the relevant magnetohydrodynamic equations, we show that any dark photon effect is negligible. The existing bound on dark photons with a mass below $10^{-14}$ eV, coming from Pioneer 10 observations of Jupiter's magnetosphere, relies on such an effect and is thus unreliable. To rectify this, we use recent Juno analyses to isolate any dark photon-induced modification of the Jovian magnetic field and hence plac…
Dark matter could be made up of dark photons, massive but very light particles whose interactions with matter resemble those of usual photons but suppressed by a small mixing parameter. We analyze the main approaches to dark photon interactions and how they can be applied to direct detection experiments which test different ranges of masses and mixings. A new experiment based on counting dark photons from induced atomic transitions in a target material is proposed. This approach appears to be particularly appropriate for dark photon detection in the meV mass range, extending the constraints in…
A new U(1) gauge symmetry is the simplest extension of the Standard Model and has various theoretical and phenomenological motivations. In this paper, we study the cosmological constraint on the MeV scale dark photon. After the neutrino decoupling era at $T = \mathcal{O}(1)\,$MeV, the decay and annihilation of the dark photon heats up the electron and photon plasma and accordingly decreases the effective number of neutrino $N_{\mathrm{eff}}$ in the recombination era. We derive a conservative lower-limit of the dark photon mass around 8.5 MeV from the current Planck data if the mixing between t…
The dark photon is a new gauge boson which arises from an extra U'(1) gauge symmetry. In this paper, a novel dark photon production mechanism based on MeV-scale $γ$-$γ$ collider is considered: $γγ\rightarrow γA'$. With the aid of PACKAGE-X, differential cross section of $γγ\rightarrow γA'$ is obtained, as a function of the kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon$ and dark photon mass $m_{A'}$. Taking the light-by-light scattering as background, the constraints on the dark photon parameter space for different time intervals in a MeV-scale $γ$-$γ$ collider are also given.
We find the Standard Model sector (SM) interacts to Dark matter (DM) sector through the scale invariant degrees of freedom - the dilatons and Dark photons (DP). The latter have an interplay with SM via the derivatives of the scalar dilaton fields, while to DM it relates via DM current.
We present a novel study of the non-abelian vector dark matter candidate $W^\prime$ with a MeV$-$GeV low mass range, accompanied by a dark photon $A^\prime$ and a dark $Z^\prime$ of similar masses in the context of a simplified gauged two-Higgs-doublet model. The model is scrutinized by taking into account various experimental constraints including dark photon searches, electroweak precision data, relic density of dark matter together with its direct and indirect searches, mono-jet and Higgs collider physics from LHC. The viable parameter space of the model consistent with all experimental and…
We present the supernova constraints on an axion-photon-dark photon coupling, which can be the leading coupling to dark sector models and can also lead to dramatic changes to axion cosmology. We show that the supernova bound on this coupling has two unusual features. One occurs because the scattering that leads to the trapping regime converts axions and dark photons into each other. Thus, if one of the two new particles is sufficiently massive, both production and scattering become suppressed and the bounds from bulk emission and trapped (area) emission both weaken exponentially and do not int…
In the framework of hypercolor scenario of multicomponent Dark Matter, inelastic interaction of high energy photons with the Dark Matter candidates is considered. This reaction results in production of energetic leptons and neutrinos, and the Dark Matter particles also can be boosted. Total and differential cross sections have been calculated. The search of correlations between detected signals of high-energy photons and neutrinos can give an information on the Dark Matter scenario and dynamics.
An analysis of sub-MeV dark photon as dark matter is given which is achieved with two hidden sectors, one of which interacts directly with the visible sector while the second has only indirect coupling with the visible sector. The formalism for the evolution of three bath temperatures for the visible sector and the two hidden sectors is developed and utilized in solution of Boltzmann equations coupling the three sectors. We present exclusion plots where the sub-MeV dark photon can be dark matter. The analysis can be extended to a multi-temperature universe with multiple hidden sectors and mult…
We present the extended electrodynamics in the presence of the axion and dark photon. We derive the extended versions of Maxwell's equations and dark Maxwell's equations (for both massive and massless dark photons) as well as the wave equations. We discuss the implications of this extended electrodynamics including the enhanced effects in the particle conversions under the external magnetic or dark magnetic field. We also discuss the recently reported anomaly in the redshifted 21cm spectrum using the extended electrodynamics.
A variant of quantum electrodynamics coupled to a dark photon through a kinetic mixing is studied. The analogous of the light-light diagram becomes the conversion process $γ'γ' \to γγ$ and an expression for the differential cross section is estimated. For high energies beams, as in LHC, this differential cross section could be measurable and its magnitude would be typically similar to the total cross section of neutrinos, {\it i.e.} $\sim 10^{-50}\,{\text{m}}^2$.
Rare leptonic kaon and pion decays $K^+(π^+) \to μ^+\, ν_μ\, e^+ e^-$ can be used to probe a dark photon of mass ${\cal O}(10)$~MeV, with the background coming from the mediation of a virtual photon. This is most relevant for the 16.7-MeV dark photon proposed to explain a 6.8$σ$ anomaly recently observed in $^8$Be transitions by the Atomki Collaboration. We evaluate the reach of future experiments for different scenarios of how the dark photon couples with the standard model particles, and show that a great portion of the preferred 16.7-MeV dark photon parameter space can be decisively probed.…
We provide updates to the limits on solar emission of dark photons, or more generally any light vector particle coupled to the electron vector current. The recent 2019 and 2020 electronic recoil data from XENON1T now provides more stringent constraints on these models than stellar energy loss in the sub-keV mass region. We also show that solar emission of dark photons does not provide a good fit to the recent XENON1T excess in the 2-5 keV energy bins. In contrast, the absorption of 2-4 keV mass dark photons that saturate the local dark matter mass density does provide a good fit to the excess,…
If fermionic dark matter (DM) is stabilized by dark $U(1)$ gauge symmetry that is spontaneously broken into its subgroup $Z_2$, the particle contents of the model becomes very rich: DM and excited DM, both of them are Majorana fermions, as well as two dark force mediators, dark photon and dark Higgs boson are naturally present due to the underlying dark gauge symmetry. In this paper, we study the DM bound state formation processes within this scenario, assuming both dark photon and dark Higgs are light mediators and including the effects of excited DM. The Goldstone boson contributions to the …
We analyse confining gauge theories where the 750 GeV di-photon resonance is a composite techni-pion that undergoes anomalous decays into SM vectors. These scenarios naturally contain accidentally stable techni-pions Dark Matter candidates. The di-photon resonance can acquire a larger width by decaying into Dark Matter through the CP-violating $θ$-term of the new gauge theory reproducing the cosmological Dark Matter density as thermal relic.
Dark Matter (DM), arising from an Inert Higgs Doublet, may either be light, below the $W$ mass, or heavy, above about 525 GeV. While the light region may soon be excluded, the heavy region is known to be very difficult to probe with either Direct Detection (DD) experiments or the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We show that adding a second Inert Higgs Doublet helps to make the heavy DM region accessible to both DD and the LHC, by either increasing its couplings to the observed Higgs boson, or lowering its mass to $360 \gev \lesssim m_{DM}$, or both.
Operating with the recently proposed model of hidden sector of the Universe, based on the idea of photonic portal, we consider a new possible astrophysical process of weak photoproduction of sterile scalars from the cold dark matter consisting of sterile Dirac fermions. Subsequently, these scalars weakly decay into secondary couples of photons. Then, primary photons, if energetic enough and interacting in sufficiently dense dark-matter configurations, may form secondary-photon cascades appearing as a new astrophysical phenomenon. Primary photons, probing the cold dark matter, may come e.g. fro…
The LHC lifetime frontier will probe dark sector in near future, and the visible decay searches at fixed-target experiments have been exploring dark sector. Composite asymmetric dark matter with dark photon portal is a promising framework explaining the coincidence problem between dark matter and visible matter. Dark strong dynamics provides rich structure in the dark sector: the lightest dark nucleon is the dark matter, while strong annihilation into dark pions depletes the symmetric components of the dark matter. Dark photons alleviate cosmological problems. Meanwhile, dark photons make dark…
The search for a dark photon produced at $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders which subsequently decays into inelastic dark matter particles, is discussed. The heavier dark matter decays into a pair of visible charged particles and a lighter dark matter particle after traveling some distance. The visible decay products can be recorded by a dark matter detector made of emulsions and gas detectors, placed near the main $e^{+}e^{-}$ detector. This setup can not only explore new parameter regions not reached before, but also re-open some regions thought to be excluded by previous experimental data. The physics …
Extra dimensions provide a unique tool for building new physics models. Here we extend the kinetic mixing/dark photon mediator scenario for the case of complex scalar dark matter interacting with the Standard Model to 5-D. We assume that the inverse size of the new, flat extra dimension is $\sim 10 - 1000$ MeV, the mass range of interest in numerous current experiments, and discuss the resulting phenomenology. Here we see that 5-D constructions can be used to soften some of the possible tuning issues which are sometimes encountered in the corresponding 4-D models.
Detecting the cosmic rays, in particular gamma-ray, coming from the dark matter annihilation or decay is an indirect way to survey the nature of the dark matter. In the commutative space-time, the annihilation of the dark matter candidates (WIMPs) to photons proceeds through loop corrections. However, it is possible for WIMPs as well as the other standard model singlet particles to couple with photons directly in the noncommutative space-time. In this paper, we study two-photon annihilation of singlet WIMPs in the noncommutative space-time. If the noncommutative interactions are relevant to th…
Dark photons are massive abelian gauge bosons that interact with ordinary photons via a kinetic mixing with the hypercharge field strength tensor. This theory is probed by a variety of different experiments and limits are set on a combination of the dark photon mass and kinetic mixing parameter. These limits can however be strongly modified by the presence of additional heavy degrees of freedom. Using the framework of dark effective field theory, we study how robust are the current experimental bounds when these new states are present. We focus in particular on the possible existence of a dark…
We analyse how dark matter (DM) can be produced in the early universe, working in the framework of a hidden sector charged under a U(1)' gauge symmetry and interacting with the Standard Model through kinetic mixing. Depending on the masses of the dark matter particle and of the dark photon, as well as on the hidden U(1)' gauge coupling and the kinetic mixing parameter, we classify all the distinct regimes along which the observed dark matter relic density can be accounted for. We find that 9 regimes are potentially operative to produce the DM particles and this along 5 distinct dynamical mecha…
Asymmetric dark matter (ADM) is an attractive framework relating the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe to the dark matter density. A composite particle in a new strong dynamics is a promising candidate for ADM as the strong dynamics naturally explains the ADM mass in the GeV range. Its large annihilation cross section due to the strong dynamics leaves the asymmetric component to be dominant over the symmetric component. In such composite ADM scenarios, the dark sector has a relatively large entropy density in the early Universe. The large dark sector entropy results in the overclosure …
The mixing of photons with light pseudoscalars in the presence of external electromagnetic fields has been used extensively to search for axion-like-particles. A similar effect for dark photon propagating states is usually not considered due to the Landau-Yang theorem. We point out that mixing between photon and dark photon propagating states in background electromagnetic fields can indeed occur, in non-linear QED, through a four-photon vertex by integrating out the electron box diagram. Starting from the Schwinger Lagrangian, we derive the equations of motion for dark photons interacting with…
Particles in a hidden sector can potentially acquire a small electric charge through their interaction with the Standard Model and can consequently be observed as millicharged particles. We systematically compute the production of millicharged scalar, fermion and vector boson particles in collisions of polarized photons. The presented calculation is model independent and is based purely on the assumptions of electromagnetic gauge invariance and unitarity. Polarization observables are evaluated and analyzed for each spin case. We show that the photon polarization asymmetries are a useful tool f…
The simplest Higgs-portal dark matter model is studied in the light of dark matter self-interacting effects on the formation of large scale structures. We show the direct detection limits on the resonant and large mass regions. Finally, we also compare these limits with those at the LHC and Xenon 1T experiments.
We present a new mechanism to produce the dark photon ($γ'$) in the early universe with a help of the axion ($a$) using a recently proposed dark axion portal. The dark photon, a light gauge boson in the dark sector, can be a relic dark matter if its lifetime is long enough. The main process we consider is a variant of the Primakoff process $f a \to f γ'$ mediated by a photon, which is possible with the axion--photon--dark photon coupling. The axion is thermalized in the early universe because of the strong interaction and it can contribute to the non-thermal dark photon production through the …
We examine the resonant conversion of axion-like particle (ALP) or dark photon to the electromagnetic photon in the early Universe, which takes place due to the ALP-photon-dark photon oscillations in background dark photon gauge fields. It is noted that the corresponding conversion probability can have an unusual spectral feature which allows strong conversion at low frequency domain, but has negligible conversion at high frequencies above certain critical frequency which is determined by the ALP coupling to dark photon and the strength of background dark photon gauge field. We apply this sche…
Despite growing interest and extensive effort to search for ultralight dark matter in the form of a hypothetical dark photon, how it fits into a consistent cosmology is unclear. Several dark photon dark matter production mechanisms proposed previously are known to have limitations, at least in certain mass regimes of experimental interest. In this letter, we explore a novel mechanism, where a coherently oscillating axion-like field can efficiently transfer its energy density to a dark photon field via a tachyonic instability. The residual axion relic is subsequently depleted via couplings to t…
Dark photon as an ultralight dark matter candidate can interact with the Standard Model particles via kinetic mixing. We propose to search for the ultralight dark photon dark matter using radio telescopes with solar observations. The dark photon dark matter can efficiently convert into photons in the outermost region of the solar atmosphere, the solar corona, where the plasma mass of photons is close to the dark photon rest mass. Due to the strong resonant conversion and benefiting from the short distance between the Sun and the Earth, the radio telescopes can lead the dark photon search sensi…
