Given a 2-manifold, a fundamental question to ask is which groups can be realized as the isometry group of a Riemannan metric of constant curvature on the manifold. In this paper, we give a nearly complete classification of such groups for infinite-genus 2-manifolds with no planar ends. Surprisingly, we show there is an uncountable class of such 2-manifolds where every countable group can be realized as an isometry group (namely, those with self-similar end spaces). We apply this result to obtain obstructions to standard group theoretic properties for the groups of homeomorphisms, diffeomorphisms, and the mapping class groups of such 2-manifolds. For example, none of these groups satisfy the Tits Alternative; are coherent; are linear; are cyclically or linearly orderable; or are residually finite. As a second application, we give an algebraic rigidity result for mapping class groups.
Let X be a proper hyperbolic geodesic metric space and let G be a closed subgroup of the isometry group Iso(X) of X. We show that if G is not amenable then its second continuous bounded cohomology group with coefficients the regular representation does not vanish. This yields some structure results for such groups.
The isometry group of a compact n-dimensional hyperbolic manifold is known to be finite. We show that for every n > 2, every finite group is realized as the full isometry group of some compact hyperbolic n-manifold. The cases n = 2 and n = 3 have been proven by Greenberg and Kojima, respectively. Our proof is non constructive: it uses counting results from subgroup growth theory and the strong approximation theorem to show that such manifolds exist.
Let $\mathcal{X}_S$ denote the class of spaces homeomorphic to two closed orientable surfaces of genus greater than one identified to each other along an essential simple closed curve in each surface. Let $\mathcal{C}_S$ denote the set of fundamental groups of spaces in $\mathcal{X}_S$. In this paper, we characterize the abstract commensurability classes within $\mathcal{C}_S$ in terms of the ratio of the Euler characteristic of the surfaces identified and the topological type of the curves identified. We prove that all groups in $\mathcal{C}_S$ are quasi-isometric by exhibiting a bilipschitz …

This paper overviews recent developments in the classification up to quasi-isometry of finitely generated groups, and more specifically of relatively hyperbolic groups.
We show that any finitely generated non-elementary Kleinian group has a co-final family of finite index normal subgroups with respect to which it has Property $τ$. As a consequence, any closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a co-final family of finite index normal subgroups for which the infimal Heegaard gradient is positive.
We construct a counterexample to the Rank versus Genus Conjecture, i.e. a closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold with rank of its fundamental group smaller than its Heegaard genus. Moreover, we show that the discrepancy between rank and Heegaard genus can be arbitrarily large for hyperbolic 3-manifolds. We also construct toroidal such examples containing hyperbolic JSJ pieces.
We show that the nearest point retraction is a uniform quasi-isometry from the Thurston metric on a hyperbolic domain in the Riemann sphere to the boundary of the convex hull of its complement. As a corollary, one obtains explicit bounds on the quasi-isometry constant of the nearest point retraction with respect to the Poincare metric when the domain is uniformly perfect. We also establish Marden and Markovic's conjecture that a hyperbolic domain is uniformly perfect if and only if the nearest point retraction is Lipschitz with respect to the Poincare metric.
We build quasi--isometry invariants of relatively hyperbolic groups which detect the hyperbolic parts of the group; these are variations of the stable dimension constructions previously introduced by the authors. We prove that, given any finite collection of finitely generated groups $\mathcal{H}$ each of which either has finite stable dimension or is non-relatively hyperbolic, there exist infinitely many quasi--isometry types of one--ended groups which are hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal{H}$. The groups are constructed using small cancellation theory over free products.
L. Paoluzzi constructed a family of compact orientable three-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds with totally geodesic boundary, which were, by construction, closely related to the three-dimensional torus. This paper gives their complete classification up to isometry, and also their isometry groups. The key tool is the so-called canonical decomposition of hyperbolic manifolds.
For a proper geodesic metric space $X$, the Morse boundary $\partial_*X$ focuses on the hyperbolic-like directions in the space $X$. It is a quasi-isometry invariant. That is, a quasi-isometry between two hyperbolic spaces induces a homeomorphism on their boundaries. In this paper, we investigate additional structures on the Morse boundary $\partial_*X$ which determine $X$ up to a quasi-isometry. We prove that, for $X$ and $Y$ proper, cocompact spaces, a homeomorphism $f$ between their Morse boundaries is induced by a quasi-isometry if and only if $f$ and $f^{-1}$ are bihölder, or quasi-symmet…
We classify the normal subgroups K of the tetrahedral group Delta=[3,5,3]^+, the even subgroup of the Coxeter group Gamma=[3,5,3], with Delta/K isomorphic to a finite simple group L_2(q). We determine their normalisers N(K) in the isometry group of hyperbolic 3-space H^3, the isometry groups N(K)/K of the associated hyperbolic 3-manifolds H^3/K, and the symmetry groups N_{Gamma}(K)/K of the icosahedral tessellations of these manifolds, giving a detailed analysis of how L_2(q) acts on these tessellations.
Bowditch's JSJ tree for splittings over 2-ended subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant for 1-ended hyperbolic groups which are not cocompact Fuchsian. Our main result gives an explicit, computable "visual" construction of this tree for certain hyperbolic right-angled Coxeter groups. As an application of our construction we identify a large class of such groups for which the JSJ tree, and hence the visual boundary, is a complete quasi-isometry invariant, and thus the quasi-isometry problem is decidable. We also give a direct proof of the fact that among the Coxeter groups we consider, the coco…
A proof that the separating curve complex of the closed genus two surface has a quasi-distance formula and is delta hyperbolic using tools of Masur and Schleimer. This answers in the affirmative a Conjecture of Schleimer.
We show that any infinite-type surface without planar ends admits arbitrarily large families of length isospectral hyperbolic structures. If the surface has infinite genus and its space of ends is self-similar, we construct an uncountable family of isospectral and quasiconformally distinct hyperbolic structures.
We investigate the rigidity of hyperbolic cone metrics on $3$-manifolds which are isometric gluing of ideal and hyper-ideal tetrahedra in hyperbolic spaces. These metrics will be called ideal and hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metrics. It is shown that a hyper-ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry by its curvature and a decorated ideal hyperbolic polyhedral metric is determined up to isometry and change of decorations by its curvature. The main tool used in the proof is the Fenchel dual of the volume function.
Some conjectures about Heegaard genera and ranks of fundamental groups of 3-manifolds are formulated, and it is shown that they imply new statements about hyperbolic volume.
We show that any parabolic generating pair of a genus-one hyperbolic 2-bridge knot group is equivalent to the upper or lower meridian pair. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of the epimorphisms from 2-bridge knot groups to genus-one hyperbolic 2-bridge knot groups.
In this article we study the spectrum of totally geodesic surfaces of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds that contain a totally geodesic surface, this spectrum determines the commensurability class. In addition, we show that any finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold has many pairs of non-isometric finite covers with identical spectra. Forgetting multiplicities, we can also construct pairs where the volume ratio is unbounded.
We prove that for every countable group G there exists a hyperbolic 3-manifold M such that the isometry group of M, the mapping class group of M, and the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group of M are isomorphic to G.
We show the existence of an infinite collection of hyperbolic knots where each of which has in its exterior meridional essential planar surfaces of arbitrarily large number of boundary components, or, equivalently, that each of these knots has essential tangle decompositions of arbitrarily large number of strings. Moreover, each of these knots has in its exterior meridional essential surfaces of any positive genus and (even) number of boundary components. That is, the compact surfaces that have a meridional essential embedding into a hyperbolic knot exterior have meridional essential embedding…
In this note we show that the expected value of the separating systole of a random surface of genus $g$ with respect to Weil-Petersson volume behaves like $2\log g $ as the genus goes to infinity. This is in strong contrast to the behavior of the expected value of the systole which, by results of Mirzakhani and Petri, is independent of genus.
The pants graph has proved to be influential in understanding 3-manifolds concretely. This stems from a quasi-isometry between the pants graph and the Teichmüller space with the Weil-Petersson metric. Currently, all estimates on the quasi-isometry constants are dependent on the surface in an undiscovered way. This paper starts effectivising some constants which begins the understanding how relevant constants change based on the surface. We do this by studying the hyperbolicity constant of the pants graph for the five-punctured sphere and the twice punctured torus. The hyperbolicity constant of…
We analyze the orbifolds that can be obtained as quotients of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a Heegaard splitting of genus two by their orientation preserving isometry groups. The genus two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are exactly the hyperbolic 2-fold branched coverings of 3-bridge links. If the 3-bridge link is a knot, we prove that the underlying topological space of the quotient orbifold is either the 3-sphere or a lens space and we describe the combinatorial setting of the singular set for each possible isometry group. In the case of 3-bridge links with two or three components, the situation …
Given a CAT(0) cube complex X, we show that if Aut(X) $\neq$ Isom(X) then there exists a full subcomplex of X which decomposes as a product with $\mathbb{R}^n$. As applications, we prove that if X is $δ$-hyperbolic, cocompact and 1-ended, then Aut(X) $=$ Isom(X) unless X is quasi-isometric to $\mathbb{H}^2$, and extend the rank-rigidity result of Caprace-Sageev to any lattice $ Γ\leq$ Isom(X).
Let $M_g$ be the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper, we show that for any $ε>0$, as genus $g$ goes to infinity, a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the first eigenvalue $λ_1(X)>\frac{3}{16}-ε$. As an application, we also show that a generic surface $X\in M_g$ satisfies that the diameter $\mathrm{diam}(X)<(4+ε)\ln(g)$ for large genus.
An L-space is a rational homology 3-sphere with minimal Heegaard Floer homology. We give the first examples of hyperbolic L-spaces with no symmetries. In particular, unlike all previously known L-spaces, these manifolds are not double branched covers of links in S^3. We prove the existence of infinitely many such examples (in several distinct families) using a mix of hyperbolic geometry, Floer theory, and verified computer calculations. Of independent interest is our technique for using interval arithmetic to certify symmetry groups and non-existence of isometries of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifo…
We present a new description of the genus 3 Arnoux--Yoccoz translation surface in terms of its Delaunay polygons and show that, up to affine equivalence, it belongs to two families of surfaces whose isometry groups include the dihedral group of the square.
In this paper it is proved that relative hyperbolicity is an invariant of quasi-isometry. As a byproduct of the arguments, simplified definitions of relative hyperbolicity are obtained. In particular we obtain a new definition very similar to the one of hyperbolicity, relying on the existence for every quasi-geodesic triangle of a central left coset of peripheral subgroup.
This is a survey of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups, i.e., discrete isometry groups of the hyperbolic n-space for n greater than 3. Our main emphasis is on the topological and geometric aspects of higher-dimensional Kleinian groups and their contrast with the discrete groups of isometry of the hyperbolic 3-space.
We study the length statistics of the components of a random multicurve on a surface of genus $g \geq 2$. For each fixed genus, the existence of such statistics follows from the work of M.~Mirzakhani, F.~Arana-Herrera and M.~Liu. We prove that as the genus $g$ tends to infinity the statistics converge in law to the Poisson--Dirichlet distribution of parameter $θ=1/2$. In particular, as the genus tends to infinity the mean length of the three longest components converge respectively to $75.8\%$, $17.1\%$ and $4.9\%$ of the total length.
We study the geometry of nonrelatively hyperbolic groups. Generalizing a result of Schwartz, any quasi-isometric image of a non-relatively hyperbolic space in a relatively hyperbolic space is contained in a bounded neighborhood of a single peripheral subgroup. This implies that a group being relatively hyperbolic with nonrelatively hyperbolic peripheral subgroups is a quasi-isometry invariant. As an application, Artin groups are relatively hyperbolic if and only if freely decomposable. We also introduce a new quasi-isometry invariant of metric spaces called metrically thick, which is sufficien…
We consider the relationship between hyperbolic cone-manifold structures on surfaces, and algebraic representations of the fundamental group into a group of isometries. A hyperbolic cone-manifold structure on a surface, with all interior cone angles being integer multiples of $2π$, determines a holonomy representation of the fundamental group. We ask, conversely, when a representation of the fundamental group is the holonomy of a hyperbolic cone-manifold structure. In this paper we build upon previous work with punctured tori to prove results for higher genus surfaces. Our techniques construct…
Two groups have a common model geometry if they act properly and cocompactly by isometries on the same proper geodesic metric space. The Milnor-Schwarz lemma implies that groups with a common model geometry are quasi-isometric; however, the converse is false in general. We consider free products of uniform lattices in isometry groups of rank-1 symmetric spaces and prove, within each quasi-isometry class, residually finite groups that have a common model geometry are abstractly commensurable. Our result gives the first examples of hyperbolic groups that are quasi-isometric but do not virtually …
In this paper, we describe all the hyperbolic 24-cell 4-manifolds with exactly one cusp. There are four of these manifolds up to isometry. These manifolds are the first examples of one-cusped hyperbolic 4-manifolds of minimum volume.
Let M and N be n-dimensional connected orientable finite-volume hyperbolic manifolds with geodesic boundary, and let f be a given isomorphism between the fundamental groups of M and N. We study the problem whether there exists an isometry between M and N which induces f. We show that this is always the case if the dimension of M and N is at least four, while in the three-dimensional case the existence of an isometry inducing f is proved under some (necessary) additional conditions on f. Such conditions are trivially satisfied if the boundaries of M and N are both compact.
We show that if M is a complete, finite-volume, hyperbolic 3-manifold having exactly one cusp, and if H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 6, then M has volume greater than 5.06. We also show that if M is a closed, orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold such that H_1(M;Z_2) has dimension at least 4, and if the image of the cup product map in H^2(M;Z_2) has dimension at most 1, then M has volume greater than 3.08. The proofs of these geometric results involve new topological results relating the Heegaard genus of a closed Haken manifold M to the Euler characteristic of the kishkes (i.e guts) of the comp…
We investigate the geometry of $π_1$-injective surfaces in closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. First we prove that for any $e>0$, if the manifold $M$ has sufficiently large systole $\sys_1(M)$, the genus of any such surface in $M$ is bounded below by $\exp((1/2-e)\sys_1(M))$. Using this result we show, in particular, that for congruence covers $M_i\to M$ of a compact arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold we have: (a) the minimal genus of $π_1$-injective surfaces satisfies $\log \sysg(M_i) \gtrsim (1/3)\log\vol(M_i)$; (b) there exist such sequences with the ratio Heegard genus$(M_i)/\sysg(M_i) \gtrsim \v…
This paper shows that every Gromov hyperbolic group can be described by a finite subdivision rule acting on the 3-sphere. This gives a boundary-like sequence of increasingly refined finite cell complexes which carry all quasi-isometry information about the group. This extends a result from Cannon and Swenson in 1998 that hyperbolic groups can be described by a recursive sequence of overlapping coverings by possibly wild sets, and demonstrates the existence of non-cubulated groups that can be represented by subdivision rules.
We show that the number of isometry classes of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that bound geometrically grows at least super-exponentially with their volume, both in the arithmetic and non-arithmetic settings.
Let W be a compact hyperbolic n-manifold with totally geodesic boundary. We prove that if n>3 then the holonomy representation of pi_1 (W) into the isometry group of hyperbolic n-space is infinitesimally rigid.
We study uniformly random maps with a single face, genus $g$, and size $n$, as $n,g\rightarrow \infty$ with $g = o(n)$, in continuation of several previous works on the geometric properties of "high genus maps". We calculate the number of short simple cycles, and we show convergence of their lengths (after a well-chosen rescaling of the graph distance) to a Poisson process, which happens to be exactly the same as the limit law obtained by Mirzakhani and Petri (2019) when they studied simple closed geodesics on random hyperbolic surfaces under the Weil-Petersson measure as $g\rightarrow \infty$…
We obtain the exact values of the systoles of these hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ with cyclic symmetries of the maximum order and the next maximum order. Precisely: for genus $g$ hyperbolic surface with order $4g+2$ cyclic symmetry, the systole is $2\mathrm{arccosh} (1+\cos \fracπ{2g+1}+\cos \frac{2π}{2g+1})$ when $g\ge 7$, and for genus $g$ hyperbolic surface with order $4g$ cyclic symmetry, the systole is $2\mathrm{arccosh} (1+2\cos \fracπ{2g})$ when $g\ge4$.
