The light-by-light (LBL) scattering with initial polarized Compton backscattered photons at the CLIC, induced by axion-like particles (ALPs), is investigated. The total cross sections are calculated, assuming CP-even coupling of the pseudoscalar ALP to photons. The 95\% C.L. exclusion region for the ALP mass $m_a$ and its coupling constant $f$ is presented. The results are compared with previously obtained CLIC bounds for the unpolarized case. It is shown that the bounds on $f$ for the polarized beams in the region $m_a = 1000 \mathrm{\ GeV} - 2000 \mathrm{\ GeV}$, with the collision energy 3000 GeV and integrated luminosity 4000 fb$^{-1}$, are on average 1.5 times stronger than the bounds for the unpolarized beams. Herewith, our CLIC bounds are stronger than all current exclusion regions for $m_a > 80$ GeV. In particular, they are more restrictive than the limits which follow from the ALP-mediated LBL scattering at the LHC.
The virtual production of axion-like particles (ALPs) in the light-by-light scattering at the CLIC collider is studied. Both differential and total cross sections are calculated, assuming interaction of the ALP with photons via CP-odd term in the Lagrangian. The 95\% C.L. exclusion regions for the ALP mass and its coupling constant are given. By comparing our results with existing collider bounds, we see that the ALP search at the CLIC has a great physics potential of searching for the ALPs, especially, in the mass region 1 TeV -- 2.4 TeV, with the collision energy $\sqrt{s} = 3000$ GeV and in…
One kind of particularly interesting pseudoscalar particles, called axion-like particles (ALPs), have rich physical phenomenology at high- and low-energy collider experiments. After discussing most of single production channels of ALP at electron-positron colliders, we investigate the possibility of detecting this kind of new particles through the W$^{+}$W$^{-}$ fusion process e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ $\rightarrow$ $\overlineν_{e}$$ν_{e}a$ $(\rightarrow γγ)$ at the CLIC. The 3$σ$ and 5$σ$ bounds on the ALP parameter space at the three energy stages of the CLIC are obtained. We find that the bounds given…
The anomalous quartic neutral couplings of the $γγγγ$ vertex in a polarized light-by-light scattering of the Compton backscattered photons at the CLIC are examined. Both differential and total cross sections are calculated for $e^+e^-$ collision energies 1500 GeV and 3000 GeV. The helicity of the initial electron beams is taken to be $\pm\,0.8$. The unpolarized and SM cross sections for the same values of helicities are also estimated. The 95\% C.L. exclusion limits on two anomalous photon couplings $ζ_1$ and $ζ_2$ are calculated. The best bounds on these couplings are found to be $6.85 \times…
We propose an experiment for measuring the effective Casimir pressure between two parallel SiC plates with aligned nuclear spins. The prospective constraints on an axion-neutron coupling constant for both hadronic and GUT axions are calculated using the process of one-axion exchange. For this purpose, a general expression for the additional pressure arising between two polarized plates due to the exchange of one axion between their constituent fermions is derived. We demonstrate that only the polarization component perpendicular to the plates contribute to the pressure. The obtained pressure c…
We investigate the prospects for discovering axion-like particles (ALPs) via a light-by-light (LBL) scattering at two colliders, the future circular collider (FCC-ee) and circular electron-positron collider (CEPC). The promising sensitivities to the effective ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ are obtained. Our numerical results show that the FCC-ee and CEPC might be more sensitive to the ALPs with mass 2 GeV $\sim$ 10 GeV than the LHC and CLIC.
A polarized gamma ray emission spread over a sufficiently wide energy band from a strongly magnetized astrophysical object like gamma ray bursts (GRBs) offers an opportunity to test the hypothesis of invisible axion. The axionic induced dichroism of gamma rays at different energies should cause a misalignment of the polarization plane for higher energy events relative to that one for lower energies events resulting in the loss of statistics needed to form a pattern of the polarization signal to be recognized in a detector. According to this, any evidence of polarized gamma rays coming from an …
Non-relativistic QCD axions or axion-like particles are among the most popular candidates for cold Dark Matter (DM) in the universe. We proposed to detect axion-like DM, using linearly polarized pulsar light as a probe. Because of birefringence effect potentially caused by an oscillating galactic axion DM background, when pulsar light travels across the galaxy, its linear polarization angle may vary with time. With a soliton+NFW galactic DM density profile, we show that this strategy can potentially probe an axion-photon coupling as small as $\sim 10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}$ for axion mass $m_a \sim …
We have estimated the sensitivity to the anomalous couplings of the $γγγZ$ vertex in the $γγ\rightarrowγZ$ scattering of the Compton backscattered photons at the CLIC. Both polarized and unpolarized collisions at the $e^+e^-$ energies 1500 GeV and 3000 GeV are addressed, and anomalous contributions to helicity amplitudes are derived. The differential and total cross sections are calculated. We have obtained 95\% C.L. exclusion limits on the anomalous quartic gauge couplings (QGCs). They are compared with corresponding bounds derived for the $γγγZ$ couplings via $γZ$ production at the LHC. The …
A polarized gamma ray emission spread over a sufficiently wide energy band from a strongly magnetized astrophysical object like gamma ray bursts (GRBs) offers an opportunity to test the hypothesis of axion like particles (ALPs). Based on evidences of polarized gamma ray emission detected in several gamma ray bursts we estimated the level of ALPs induced dichroism, which could take place in the magnetized fireball environment of a GRB. This allows to estimate the sensitivity of polarization measurements of GRBs to the ALP-photon coupling. This sensitivity $\gag\le 2.2\cdot 10^{-11} {\rm GeV^{-1…
We revisit the cosmological constraints on resonant and non-resonant conversion of photons to axions in the cosmological magnetic fields. We find that the constraints on photon-axion coupling and primordial magnetic fields are much weaker than previously claimed for low mass axion like particles with masses $m_{\rm a} \lesssim 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$. In particular we find that the axion mass range $10^{-14}\,\text{eV} \le m_{\rm a} \le 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$ is not excluded by the CMB data contrary to the previous claims. We also examine the photon-axion conversion in the Galactic …
We propose using interferometry of circularly polarized light as a mechanism by which to test for axion dark matter. These interferometers differ from standard interferometers only by the addition of a few quarter waveplates to preserve the polarization of light upon reflection. We show that using current technology, interferometers can probe new regions of axion parameter space up to a couple orders of magnitude beyond current constraints.
We report a new limit on a possible short range spin-dependent interaction from the precise measurement of the ratio of Larmor precession frequencies of stored ultracold neutrons and $^{199}$Hg atoms confined in the same volume. The measurement was performed in a $\sim$1$μ$ T vertical magnetic holding field with the apparatus searching for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute. A possible coupling between freely precessing polarized neutron spins and unpolarized nucleons of the wall material can be investigated by searching for a tiny change of the pr…
In [1], we demonstrated that the structure function $g_1(x_B,Q^2)$ measured in polarized deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) is dominated by the triangle anomaly in both the Bjorken limit of large $Q^2$ and the Regge limit of small $x_B$. In the worldline formulation of quantum field theory, the triangle anomaly arises from the imaginary part of the worldline effective action. We show explicitly how a Wess-Zumino-Witten term coupling the topological charge density to a primordial isosinglet ${\bar η}$ arises in this framework. We demonstrate the fundamental role played by this contribution both …
We have examined the anomalous electromagnetic moments of the tau lepton in the processes $e^{-}γ\to ν_eτ\barν_τ$ ($γ$ is the Compton backscattering photon) and $e^{-}e^{+} \to e^{-}γ^* e^{+} \to ν_{e}τ\barν_τe^+$ ($γ^*$ is the Weizsacker-Williams photon) with unpolarized and polarized electron beams at the CLIC. We have obtained 95$\%$ confidence level bounds on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments for various values of the integrated luminosity and center-of-mass energy. Improved constraints of the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments have been obtained compared to th…
We have searched for axion-like resonance states by colliding optical photons in a focused laser field (creation beam) by adding another laser field (inducing beam) for stimulation of the resonance decays, where frequency-converted signal photons can be created as a result of stimulated photon-photon scattering via exchanges of axion-like resonances. A quasi-parallel collision system (QPS) in such a focused field allows access to the sub-eV mass range of resonance particles. In past searches in QPS, for simplicity, we interpreted the scattering rate based on an analytically calculable symmetri…
Searches for the axion and axionlike particles may hold the key to unlocking some of the deepest puzzles about our universe, such as dark matter and dark energy. Here we use the recently demonstrated spin-based amplifier to constrain such hypothetical particles within the well-motivated ``axion window'' (1 $μ$eV-1 meV) through searching for an exotic spin-spin interaction between polarized electron and neutron spins. The key ingredient is the use of hyperpolarized long-lived $^{129}$Xe nuclear spins as an amplifier for the pseudomagnetic field generated by the exotic interaction. Using such a …
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken global symmetries in high-energy extensions of the Standard Model (SM). This makes them a prime target for future experiments aiming to discover new physics which addresses some of the open questions of the SM. While future high-precision experiments can discover ALPs with masses well below the GeV scale, heavier ALPs can be searched for at future high-energy lepton and hadron colliders. We discuss the reach of the different proposed colliders, focusing on resonant ALP production, ALP production in the decay …
The observation of a non-vanishing rotation of linear polarized laser light after passage through a strong magnetic field by the PVLAS collaboration has renewed the interest in light particles coupled to photons. Axions are a species of such particles that is theoretically well motivated. However, the relation between coupling and mass predicted by standard axion models conflicts with the PVLAS observation. Moreover, light particles with a coupling to photons of the strength required to explain PVLAS face trouble from astrophysical bounds. We discuss models that can avoid these bounds. Finally…
Axions and axion-like particles may couple to nuclear spins like a weak oscillating effective magnetic field, the "axion wind." Existing proposals for detecting the axion wind sourced by dark matter exploit analogies to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and aim to detect the small transverse field generated when the axion wind resonantly tips the precessing spins in a polarized sample of material. We describe a new proposal using the homogeneous precession domain (HPD) of superfluid helium-3 as the detection medium, where the effect of the axion wind is a small shift in the precession frequency…
We obtain bounds on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the $t$-quark from a future high-energy and high-luminosity linear electron positron collider, such as the CLIC, with unpolarized and polarized electron beams which are a powerful tool to determine new physics. We consider the processes $γe^- \to \bar t bν_e$ ($γ$ is the Compton backscattering photon) and $e^+e^- \to e^-γ^* e^+ \to \bar t bν_e e^+$ ($γ^*$ is the Weizsacker-Williams photon) which are one of the most important sources of single top quark production. For the systematic uncertainties of $δ_{sys}=0\%,\hspace{…
Axion-like particles are dark matter candidates motivated by the Peccei-Quinn mechanism and also occur in effective field theories where their masses and photon couplings are independent. We estimate the dispersion of circularly polarized photons in a background of oscillating axion-like particles (ALPs) with the standard $g_{aγ}\,a\,F_{μν}\tilde F^{μν}/4$ coupling to photons. This leads to birefringence or rotation of linear polarization by ALP dark matter. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) birefringence limits $Δα\lesssim (1.0)^\circ$ enable us to constrain the axion-photon coupling $g_{aγ} …

We have investigated the anomalous quartic couplings defined by the dimension-8 operators in semileptonic decay channel of the $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow ν_{e} W^{-} W^{+} \barν_{e}$ process for unpolarized and polarized electron (positron) beam at the Compact Linear Collider. We give the $95\%$ confidence level bounds on anomalous $\frac{f_{S0}}{Λ^{4}}$, $\frac{f_{S1}}{Λ^{4}}$ and $\frac{f_{T0}}{Λ^{4}}$ couplings for various values of the integrated luminosities and center-of-mass energies. The best sensitivities obtained on anomalous $\frac{f_{S0}}{Λ^{4}}$, $\frac{f_{S1}}{Λ^{4}}$ and $\frac{f_{T…
Possible extensions of the standard model of elementary particle physics suggest the existence of particles with small, unquantized electric charge. Photon initiated pair production of millicharged fermions in an external magnetic field would manifest itself as a vacuum magnetic dichroism. We show that laser polarization experiments searching for this effect yield, in the mass range below 0.1 eV, much stronger constraints on millicharged fermions than previously considered laboratory searches. Vacuum magnetic birefringence originating from virtual pair production gives a slightly better constr…
Hypothetical oscillations of probe photons into axion-like particles might be revealed by exploiting the strong fields of high-intensity laser pulses. Considering an arbitrary plane-wave background, we determine the polarization tensor induced by the quantum fluctuations of the axion field and use it to calculate how the polarimetric properties of an initially linear-polarized probe beam are modified. We find that various experimental setups based on contemporary facilities and instrumentation might lead to new exclusion bounds on the parameter space of these particle candidates. The impact of…
Axion-like particles are a broad class of dark matter candidates which are expected to behave as a coherent, classical field with a weak coupling to photons. Research into the detectability of these particles with laser interferometers has recently revealed a number of promising experimental designs. Inspired by these ideas, we propose the Axion Detection with Birefringent Cavities (ADBC) experiment, a new axion interferometry concept using a cavity that exhibits birefringence between its two, linearly polarized laser eigenmodes. This experimental concept overcomes several limitations of the d…
Oscillations of photons into axion-like particles in a high-intensity laser field are investigated. Nonlinear QED effects are considered through the low energy behavior of the vacuum polarization tensor, which is derived from the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in the one-loop and weak field approximations. The expressions obtained in this framework are applied to the configuration in which the strong background field is a circularly polarized monochromatic plane wave. The outcomes of this analysis reveal that, in the regime of low energy-momentum transfer, the axion field induces a chiral-like bi…
The mixing of photons with axion-like particles (ALPs) in the large-scale magnetic field $B$ changes the polarization angle of a linearly polarized photon beam from active galactic nuclei in radio galaxies as it propagates over cosmological distances. Using available ultraviolet polarization data concerning these sources we derive a new bound on the product of the photon-ALP coupling $g_{aγ}$ times $B$. We find $g_{aγ} B \lesssim 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$ nG for ultralight ALPs with $m_a \lesssim 10^{-15}$ eV. We compare our new bound with the ones present in the literature and we comment about pos…
The propagation of a probe electromagnetic field through a counterpropagating strong plane wave is investigated. The effects of the electromagnetic field-(pseudo)scalar axion field interaction and of the self-interaction of the electromagnetic field mediated by virtual electron-positron pairs in the effective Lagrangian approach are included. First, we show that if the strong field is circularly polarized, contrary to the leading-order nonlinear QED effects, the axion-photon interaction induces a chiral-like birefringence and a dichroism in the vacuum. The latter effect is explained by evoking…
An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it …

Axion dark matter differentiates the phase velocities of the circular-polarized photons. In this Letter, a scheme to measure the phase difference by using a linear optical cavity is proposed. If the scheme is applied to the Fabry-Pérot arm of Advanced LIGO-like (Cosmic-Explorer-like) gravitational wave detector, the potential sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling constant, $g_{\text{a}γ}$, reaches $g_{\text{a}γ} \simeq 8\times10^{-13}$ GeV$^{-1}\, (4 \times 10^{-14}$ GeV$^{-1})$ at the axion mass $m \simeq 3\times 10^{-13}$ eV ($2\times10^{-15}$ eV) and remains at around this sensitivity fo…
For the first time, the production of a massive dark photon (DP) in the $γe^-$ scattering at the future lepton colliders ILC, CLIC, and CEPC is examined. The invisible decay mode of the DP is addressed. We have studied both the unpolarized scattering and the collision of the Compton backscattered photons with the polarized electron. The missing energy distributions are shown. We have considered the wide range 10 GeV -- 1000 GeV of the DP mass $m_{A'}$. The excluded regions at the 95\% C.L. in the plane $(\varepsilon, m_{A'})$, where $\varepsilon$ is the kinetic mixing parameter, are obtained.
In the first part of the thesis, we revisit the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnisky axion model in light of the recent Higgs LHC results and electroweak precision data. This model is an extension of the two-Higgs-doublet model incorporating a PQ symmetry which leads to a physically acceptable axion. For generic values of the couplings, the model reproduces the minimal Standard Model, with a massless axion and all the other degrees of freedom at a very high scale. However, in some scenarios, the extra Higgses could be relatively light. We use the oblique corrections, in particular $Δρ$, to constr…
Axion remains the most convincing solution to the strong-CP problem and a well-motivated dark matter candidate, causing the search for axions and axion-like particles(ALPs) to attract attention continually. The exchange of such particles may cause anomalous spin-dependent forces, inspiring many laboratory ALP searching experiments based on the detection of macroscopic monopole-dipole interactions between polarized electrons/nucleons and unpolarized nucleons. Since there is no exact proof of the existence of these interactions, to detect them is still of great significance. In the present paper…
The hypothetical axion and axion-like particles, feebly coupled with photon, have not yet been found in any experiment. With the improvement of laser technique, much stronger but shorter quasi-static electric and magnetic fields can be created in laboratory using laser-plasma interaction, compared to the fields of large magnets, to help the search of axion. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of ALPs exploration using planarly or cylindrically symmetric laser-plasma fields as background and an x-ray free-electron laser as probe. Both the probe and the background fields are polarized su…
Axion dark matter differentiates the phase velocities of the circular-polarized photons. In Phys.Rev.Lett. 123 (2019) no.11, 111301, we have proposed a scheme to measure the phase difference by using a linear optical cavity. If the scheme is applied to the Fabry-Pérot arm of Advanced LIGO-like (Cosmic-Explorer-like) gravitational wave detector, the potential sensitivity to the axion-photon coupling constant, $g_{\text{a}γ}$, reaches $g_{\text{a}γ} \simeq 8\times10^{-13} \text{GeV}^{-1}\, (4 \times 10^{-14}\text{GeV}^{-1})$ at the axion mass $m \simeq 3\times 10^{-13}$ eV ($2\times10^{-15}$ eV)…
We report on the first results of the Noble and Alkali Spin Detectors for Ultralight Coherent darK matter (NASDUCK) collaboration. We search for the interactions of Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) with atomic spins using an earth-based precision quantum detector as it traverses through the galactic dark matter halo. The detector is composed of spin-polarized xenon gas which can coherently interact with a background ALP dark matter field and an in-situ rubidium Floquet optical-magnetometer. Conducting a five months-long search, we derive new constraints on ALP-proton and ALP-neutron interactions in…
Future $c$-$τ$ factories are natural places to study extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) with new long-lived feebly interacting particles light enough to be produced in electron-positron collisions. We investigate prospects of these machines in exploring such extensions emphasizing the role of polarized beams in getting rid of the SM irreducible background for the missing energy signature. We illustrate this on example of $c$-$τ$ project in Novosibirsk, where the electron beam is designed to be polarized to achieve much higher sensitivity to hadronic resonances and $τ$-le…

We propose using the upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) ground based experiments to detect the signal of ALPs (Axion like particles) interacting with magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. The conversion between CMB photons and ALPs in the presence of the cluster magnetic field can cause a polarized spectral distortion in the CMB around a galaxy cluster. The strength of the signal depends upon the redshift of the galaxy cluster and will exhibit a distinctive spatial profile around it depending upon the structure of electron density and magnetic field. This distortion produces a different …

Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) are pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with spontaneously broken global $U(1)$ symmetries. Such particles can have lepton-flavor-violating (LFV) couplings to the SM charged leptons. LFV ALPs provide the possibility to address some of the SM long-lasting problems. We investigate the sensitivity of a future muon collider suggested by the Muon Accelerator Program (MAP) to the production of LFV ALPs in the ALP mass range $m_a\leq1$ MeV. ALPs are assumed to be produced through the LFV decay $τ\ra\ell a$ ($\ell=e,μ$) of one of the tau leptons produced in the muon-an…
Ultra-light bosons such as axions or axion-like particles (ALPs), are promising candidates to solve the dark matter problem. A unique way to detect such ALPs is to search for the periodic oscillation feature of the position angles of linearly polarized photons emitted from the regions where ALP dark matter forms a solitonic core. In this work, we use the high-resolution polarimetric measurements of the radiation near the super-massive black hole (SMBH) in the center of the Milky Way, i.e., Sagittarius A$^\star$ (Sgr A$^\star$), by a sub-array of the Event Horizon Telescope to search for the ul…
In this letter we show that the dichroism and ellipticity induced on a linear polarized light beam by the presence of a magnetic field in vacuum can be explained in the framework of the de Broglie's fusion model of a photon. In this model it is assumed that the usual photon is the spin 1 state of a particle-antiparticle bound state of two spin 1/2 fermions. The other S=0 state is referred to as the \emph{second} photon. On the other hand, since no charged particle neither particles having an electric dipole are considered, no effect is predicted in the presence of electric fields and this mode…
