We consider the persistence probability for the integrated fractional Brownian motion and the fractionally integrated Brownian motion with parameter $H,$ respectively. For the integrated fractional Brownian motion, we discuss a conjecture of Molchan and Khokhlov and determine the asymptotic behavior of the persistence exponent as $H\to 0$ and $H\to 1,$ which is in accordance with the conjecture. For the fractionally integrated Brownian motion, also called Riemann-Liouville process, we find the asymptotic behavior of the persistence exponent as $H\to 0$.
The problem is a log-asymptotics of the probability that the Integrated fractional Brownian motion of index 0<H<1 does not exceed a fixed level during long time. For the growing time interval (0,T) the hypothetical log-asymptotics is (H(H-1)+o(1))Log T. In support of the hypothesis, we update our earlier estimates of the probability and give analytical proofs.
In this paper we consider the persistence properties of random processes in Brownian scenery, which are examples of non-Markovian and non-Gaussian processes. More precisely we study the asymptotic behaviour for large $T$, of the probability $P[ \sup\_{t\in[0,T]} Δ\_t \leq 1] $ where $Δ\_t = \int\_{\mathbb{R}} L\_t(x) \, dW(x).$ Here $W={W(x); x\in\mathbb{R}}$ is a two-sided standard real Brownian motion and ${L\_t(x); x\in\mathbb{R},t\geq 0}$ is the local time of some self-similar random process $Y$, independent from the process $W$. We thus generalize the results of \cite{BFFN} where the incr…
We consider various problems related to the persistence probability of fractional Brownian motion (FBM), which is the probability that the FBM $X$ stays below a certain level until time $T$. Recently, Oshanin et al. study a physical model where persistence properties of FBM are shown to be related to scaling properties of a quantity $J_N$, called steady-state current. It turns out that for this analysis it is important to determine persistence probabilities of FBM with a moving boundary. We show that one can add a boundary of logarithmic order to a FBM without changing the polynomial rate of d…
The fractional Brownian motion of index $0 < H < 1$, H-FBM, with d-dimensional time is considered on an expanding set TG, where G is a bounded convex domain that contains 0 at its boundary. The main result: if 0 is a point of smoothness of the boundary, then the log-asymptotics of probability that H-FBM does not exceed a fixed positive level in TG is $(H - d + o(1)) \log T$, $T\to\infty$. Some generalizations of this result to isotropic but not self-similar Gaussian processes with stationary increments are also considered.
We study the persistence probability for some two-sided discrete-time Gaussian sequences that are discrete-time analogs of fractional Brownian motion and integrated fractional Brownian motion, respectively. Our results extend the corresponding ones in continuous-time in [Molchan, Commun. Math. Phys., 1999] and [Molchen, J. Stat. Phys., 2017] to a wide class of discrete-time processes.
We consider the one-sided exit problem for (fractionally) integrated random walks and Lévy processes. We prove that the rate of decrease of the non-exit probability -- the so-called survival exponent -- is universal in this class of processes. In particular, the survival exponent can be inferred from the (fractionally) integrated Brownian motion. This, in particular, extends Sinai's result on the survival exponent for the integrated simple random walk to general random walks with some finite exponential moment. Further, we prove existence and monotonicity of the survival exponent of fractional…
We consider the sum of two self-similar centred Gaussian processes with different self-similarity indices. Under non-negativity assumptions of covariance functions and some further minor conditions, we show that the asymptotic behaviour of the persistence probability of the sum is the same as for the single process with the greater self-similarity index. In particular, this covers the mixed fractional Brownian motion introduced in Cheridito (2001) and shows that the corresponding persistence probability decays asymptotically polynomially with persistence exponent $1-\max(1/2,H),$ where $H$ is …
We obtain invariance principles for a wide class of fractionally integrated nonlinear processes. The limiting distributions are shown to be fractional Brownian motions. Under very mild conditions, we extend earlier ones on long memory linear processes to a more general setting. The invariance principles are applied to the popular R/S and KPSS tests.
We compute the persistence exponent of the integral of a stable Lévy process in terms of its self-similarity and positivity parameters. This solves a problem raised by Z. Shi (2003). Along the way, we investigate the law of the stable process L evaluated at the first time its integral X hits zero, when the bivariate process (X,L) starts from a coordinate axis. This extends classical formulae by McKean (1963) and Gor'kov (1975) for integrated Brownian motion.
Fractional Brownian motion, a Gaussian non-Markovian self-similar process with stationary long-correlated increments, has been identified to give rise to the anomalous diffusion behavior in a great variety of physical systems. The correlation and diffusion properties of this random motion are fully characterized by its index of self-similarity, or the Hurst exponent. However, recent single particle tracking experiments in biological cells revealed highly complicated anomalous diffusion phenomena that can not be attributed to a class of self-similar random processes. Inspired by these observati…
We establish an exact formula relating the survival probability for certain Lévy flights (viz. asymmetric $α$-stable processes where $α= 1/2$) with the survival probability for the order statistics of the running maxima of two independent Brownian particles. This formula allows us to show that the persistence exponent $δ$ in the latter, non Markovian case is simply related to the persistence exponent $θ$ in the former, Markovian case via: $δ=θ/2$. Thus, our formula reveals a link between two recently explored families of anomalous exponents: one exhibiting continuous deviations from Sparre-And…
The (fractional) Brownian sheet is a simplest example of a Gaussian random field X whose covariance is the tensor product of a finite number (d) of nonnegative correlation functions of self-similar Gaussian processes. Let Y be the homogeneous Gaussian field obtained by applying to X the Lamperti transform, which involves the exponential change of time and the amplitude normalization to have unit variance. Under some assumptions, we prove the existence of the persistence exponents for both fields, X and Y, and find the relation between them. The exponent for X is the limit of ln1/P{X(t)<1, t in…
We study the persistence probability for processes with stationary increments. Our results apply to a number of examples: sums of stationary correlated random variables whose scaling limit is fractional Brownian motion, random walks in random sceneries, random processes in Brownian scenery, and the Matheron-de Marsily model in Z^2 with random orientations of the horizontal layers. Using a new approach, strongly related to the study of the range, we obtain an upper bound of optimal order in the general case and improved lower bounds (compared to previous literature) for many processes.
We study the scaling limit of a branching random walk in static random environment in dimension $d=1,2$ and show that it is given by a super-Brownian motion in a white noise potential. In dimension $1$ we characterize the limit as the unique weak solution to the stochastic PDE: \[\partial_t μ= (Δ{+} ξ) μ{+} \sqrt{2νμ} \tildeξ\] for independent space white noise $ξ$ and space-time white noise $\tildeξ$. In dimension $2$ the study requires paracontrolled theory and the limit process is described via a martingale problem. In both dimensions we prove persistence of this rough version of the super-…
We show that $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)=(c_X+o(1))T^{-(1-H)}$, where $\ell_X$ is the local time measure at $0$ of any recurrent $H$-self-similar real-valued process $X$ with stationary increments that admits a sufficiently regular local time and $c_X$ is some constant depending only on $X$. A special case is the Gaussian setting, i.e. when the underlying process is fractional Brownian motion, in which our result settles a conjecture by Molchan [Commun. Math. Phys. 205, 97-111 (1999)] who obtained the upper bound $1-H$ on the decay exponent of $\mathbb{P} ( \ell_X(0,T] \leq 1)$. Our appr…
We study the persistence exponent for the first passage time of a random walk below the trajectory of another random walk. More precisely, let $\{B_n\}$ and $\{W_n\}$ be two centered, weakly dependent random walks. We establish that $\mathbb{P}(\forall_{n\leq N} B_n \geq W_n|W) = N^{-γ+ o(1)}$ for a non-random $γ\geq 1/2$. In the classical setting, $W_n \equiv 0$, it is well-known that $γ= 1/2$. We prove that for any non-trivial $W$ one has $γ>1/2$ and the exponent $γ$ depends only on $\text{Var}(B_1)/\text{Var}(W_1)$. Our result holds also in the continuous setting, when $B$ and $W$ are indep…
We propose a new algorithm to generate a fractional Brownian motion, with a given Hurst parameter, 1/2<H<1 using the correlated Bernoulli random variables with parameter p; having a certain density. This density is constructed using the link between the correlation of multivariate Gaussian random variables and the correlation of their dichotomized binary variables and the relation between the correlation coefficient and the persistence parameter. We prove that the normalized sum of trajectories of this proposed random walk yields a Gaussian process whose scaling limit is the desired fractional…
We study records generated by Brownian particles in one dimension. Specifically, we investigate an ordinary random walk and define the record as the maximal position of the walk. We compare the record of an individual random walk with the mean record, obtained as an average over infinitely many realizations. We term the walk "superior" if the record is always above average, and conversely, the walk is said to be "inferior" if the record is always below average. We find that the fraction of superior walks, S, decays algebraically with time, S ~ t^(-beta), in the limit t --> infty, and that the …
Many real-world systems are well-modeled by Brownian particles subject to gradient dynamics plus noise arising, e.g., from the thermal fluctuations of a heat bath. Of central importance to many applications in physics and biology (e.g., molecular motors) is the net steady-state particle current or "flux" enabled by the noise and an additional driving force. However, this flux cannot usually be calculated analytically. Motivated by this, we investigate the steady-state flux generated by a nondegenerate diffusion process on a general compact manifold; such fluxes are essentially equivalent to th…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior as time goes to infinity of Hawkes processes whose regression kernel has $L^1$ norm close to one and power law tail of the form $x^{-(1+α)}$, with $α\in(0,1)$. We in particular prove that when $α\in(1/2,1)$, after suitable rescaling, their law converges to that of a kind of integrated fractional Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, with associated Hurst parameter $H=α-1/2$. This result is in contrast to the case of a regression kernel with light tail, where a classical Brownian CIR process is obtained at the limit. Interestingly, it shows that persistence properti…
