This work is dedicated to providing a detailed account of the flow dynamics in the closure region of an internal ship air cavity. A geometrically simple multiwave test cavity is considered, and a simulation of the flow is conducted using large-eddy simulation coupled with an algebraic Volume of Fluid interface capturing method. Results reveal that the flow in the closure region is highly unsteady and turbulent. The main cause of this is established to be the pressure gradient occurring due to the stagnation of the flow on the beach wall of the cavity. The pressure gradient leads to a steep incline in the mean location of the air-water interface, which, in turn, leads to the flow separating from it and forming a recirculation zone, in which air and water are mixed. The separated flow becomes turbulent, which further facilitates the mixing and entrainment of air. Swarms of air bubbles leak periodically. Upstream of the closure region, the phase and length of the wave are found to be well-predicted using existing approximations based on linear flow theory. However, for the corresponding prediction of the amplitude of the wave the agreement is worse, with the estimates under-predicting the simulation results.
Cartesian-grid methods with Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) are ideally suited for simulating the breaking of waves, the formation of spray, and the entrainment of air around ships. As a result of the cartesian-grid formulation, minimal input is required to describe the ships geometry. A surface panelization of the ship hull is used as input to automatically generate a three-dimensional model. No three-dimensional gridding is required. The AMR portion of the numerical algorithm automatically clusters grid points near the ship in regions where wave breaking, spray formation, and air entrainment …
The air entrainment due to the turbulence in a free surface boundary layer shear flow created by a horizontally moving vertical surface-piercing wall is studied through experiments and direct numerical simulations. In the experiments, a laboratory-scale device was built that utilizes a surface-piercing stainless steel belt that travels in a loop around two vertical rollers, with one length of the belt between the rollers acting as a horizontally-moving flat wall. To complement the experiments, Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of the two-phase boundary layer problem were carried out with the …
Flows around a wedge-shaped bow are simulated with the aim of investigating the wave breaking mechanism and small scale features of ship bow waves. This fluid dynamics video shows the plunging wave breaking process around the wedge including the thin water sheet formation, overturning sheet with surface disturbance, fingering and breaking up into spray, plunging and splashing, and air entrainment.
A data-driven closure modeling based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) temporal modes is used to obtain stable and accurate reduced order models (ROMs) of unsteady compressible flows. Model reduction is obtained via Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin projection of the non-conservative compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The latter approach is implemented using the least-squares Petrov-Galerkin (LSPG) technique and the present methodology allows pre-computation of both Galerkin and LSPG coefficients. Closure is performed by adding linear and non-linear coefficients to the original ROMs and m…

A circular disc impacting on a water surface creates a remarkably vigorous jet. Upon impact an axisymmetric air cavity forms and eventually pinches off in a single point halfway down the cavity. Immediately after closure two fast sharp-pointed jets are observed shooting up- and downwards from the closure location, which by then has turned into a stagnation point surrounded by a locally hyperbolic flow pattern. This flow, however, is {\it not} the mechanism feeding the two jets. Using high-speed imaging and numerical simulations we show that jetting is fed by the local flow around the base of t…
Presumed probability density function (PDF) and transported PDF methods are commonly applied to model the turbulence chemistry interaction in turbulent reacting flows. However, little focus has been given to the turbulence chemistry interaction PDF closure for flame-wall interaction. In this study, a quasi-DNS of a turbulent premixed, stoichiometric methane-air flame ignited in a fully developed turbulent channel flow undergoing side-wall quenching is investigated. The objective of this study is twofold. First, the joint PDF of the progress variable and enthalpy that needs to be accounted for …
A novel volume of fluid model (VoF) called explicit volume diffusion (EVD) is developed for the simulation of interfacial flows, including those with turbulence and primary spray atomisation. The EVD model is derived by volume averaging the VoF equations over a physically-defined length scale. This introduces unclosed sub-volume flux, sub-volume stress and volume averaged surface tension force. Sub-volume fluctuations arise due to both turbulent motions and other interface dynamics which can, in general, occur in both laminar and turbulent flows. Both of these types of fluctuations are attenua…
