Geometric symmetry induces symmetries of function spaces, and the latter yields a clue to global analysis via representation theory. In this note we summarize recent developments on the general theory about how geometric conditions affect representation theoretic properties on function spaces, with focus on multiplicities and spectrum.

We study three fundamental topics in the representation theory of disconnected algebraic groups whose identity component is reductive: (i) the classification of irreducible representations; (ii) the existence and properties of Weyl and dual Weyl modules; and (iii) the decomposition map relating representations in characteristic $0$ and those in characteristic $p$ (for groups defined over discrete valuation rings). For each of these topics, we obtain natural generalizations of the well-known results for connected reductive groups.
Let G_R be a real reductive Lie group acting on a manifold M. M.Kashiwara and W.Schmid in [KaSchm] constructed representations of G_R using sheaves and quasi-G_R-equivariant D-modules on M. We present a new method for classifying naturally reductive homogeneous spaces -- i.\,e.~homogeneous Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection with skew torsion that has parallel torsion \emph{and} curvature. This method is based on a deeper understanding of the holonomy algebra of connections with parallel skew torsion on Riemannian manifolds and the interplay of such a connection with the geometric structure on the given Riemannian manifold. We introduce a class of perverse sheaves on a partial flag manifold of a connected reductive group G defined over a finite field which are equivariant under the action of the group of rational points of G. The definition of this class is similar to the definition of parabolic character sheaves.
In an earlier paper by Kazhdan and the author, a map from the set of unipotent classes in a reductive connected group over C to the conjugacy classes in the Weyl group was defined. Here we present some experimental evidence for a possibly alternative definition of that map in terms of the pieces in certain partitions of the flag manifold.

The paper is a survey of recent results in geometric representation theory describing group actions which induce multiplicity-free representations in the spaces of holomorphic functions. For connected compact Lie groups of automorphisms of Stein manifolds we characterize such actions in terms of antiholomorphic involutions. Some proofs are given and some results are new. Let a complex algebraic reductive group $\bf G$ act on a complex algebraic manifold $\bf X$. For a $\bf G$-invariant subvariety $Ξ$ of the nilpotent cone $\mathcal{N}(\mathfrak{g}^*)\subset \mathfrak{g}^*$ we define a notion of $Ξ$-symplectic complexity of $\bf X$. This notion generalizes the notion of complexity defined in [Vin86]. We prove several properties of this notion, and relate it to the notion of $Ξ$-complexity defined in [AG] motivated by its relation with representation theory.
We study the action of a real-reductive group $G=K\exp(\lie{p})$ on real-analytic submanifold $X$ of a Kähler manifold $Z$. We suppose that the action of $G$ extends holomorphically to an action of the complexified group $G^\mbb{C}$ such that the action of a maximal Hamiltonian subgroup is Hamiltonian. The moment map $μ$ induces a gradient map $μ_\lie{p}\colon X\to\lie{p}$. We show that $μ_\lie{p}$ almost separates the $K$--orbits if and only if a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$ has an open orbit. This generalizes Brion's characterization of spherical Kähler manifolds with moment maps.

We prove a formula for the Drinfeld-Gaitsgory functor for the dg-category of K-equivariant sheaves on the flag manifold of G in terms of the Matsuki duality functor. We study a large class of Poisson manifolds, derived from Manin triples, for which we construct explicit partitions into regular Poisson submanifolds by intersecting certain group orbits. Let Y=G/L be a flag manifold for a reductive G and K a maximal compact subgroup of G. We define an equivariant differential operator on G/(L cap K) playing the role of an equivariant Dolbeault Laplacian when restricted to the complex manifold G/L, using a distribution transverse to the fibers and satisfying the Hormander condition. We prove here that this operator is not maximal hypoelliptic when G=U(p,q).
For a pair of reductive groups $G \supset G'$, we prove a geometric criterion for the space $Sh(λ, ν)$ of Shintani functions to be finite-dimensional in the Archimedean case. Let a connected reductive group G act on the smooth connected variety X. The cotangent bundle of X is a Hamiltonian G-variety. We show that its "total moment map" has connected fibers. This is an expanded version of section 6 of my paper dg-ga/9712010 on Weyl groups of Hamiltonian manifolds.
The theory of flat Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and flat affine manifolds is closely connected to the topic of prehomogeneous affine representations of Lie groups. In this article, we exhibit several aspects of this correspondence. At the heart of our presentation is a development of the theory of characteristic classes and characters of prehomogeneous affine representations. We give applications concerning flat affine, as well as Pseudo-Riemannian and symplectic affine flat manifolds.
