We introduce RPM-Net, a deep learning-based approach which simultaneously infers movable parts and hallucinates their motions from a single, un-segmented, and possibly partial, 3D point cloud shape. RPM-Net is a novel Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), composed of an encoder-decoder pair with interleaved Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) components, which together predict a temporal sequence of pointwise displacements for the input point cloud. At the same time, the displacements allow the network to learn movable parts, resulting in a motion-based shape segmentation. Recursive applications of RPM-Net on the obtained parts can predict finer-level part motions, resulting in a hierarchical object segmentation. Furthermore, we develop a separate network to estimate part mobilities, e.g., per-part motion parameters, from the segmented motion sequence. Both networks learn deep predictive models from a training set that exemplifies a variety of mobilities for diverse objects. We show results of simultaneous motion and part predictions from synthetic and real scans of 3D objects exhibiting a variety of part mobilities, possibly involving multiple movable parts.
Iterative Closest Point (ICP) solves the rigid point cloud registration problem iteratively in two steps: (1) make hard assignments of spatially closest point correspondences, and then (2) find the least-squares rigid transformation. The hard assignments of closest point correspondences based on spatial distances are sensitive to the initial rigid transformation and noisy/outlier points, which often cause ICP to converge to wrong local minima. In this paper, we propose the RPM-Net -- a less sensitive to initialization and more robust deep learning-based approach for rigid point cloud registrat…
In this paper, we introduce a self-supervised approach for video object segmentation without human labeled data.Specifically, we present Robust Pixel-level Matching Net-works (RPM-Net), a novel deep architecture that matches pixels between adjacent frames, using only color information from unlabeled videos for training. Technically, RPM-Net can be separated in two main modules. The embed-ding module first projects input images into high dimensional embedding space. Then the matching module with deformable convolution layers matches pixels between reference and target frames based on the embedd…

Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPMs) are frequently used in evaluating human's visual reasoning ability. Researchers have made considerable efforts in developing systems to automatically solve the RPM problem, often through a black-box end-to-end convolutional neural network for both visual recognition and logical reasoning tasks. Based on the two intrinsic natures of RPM problem, visual recognition and logical reasoning, we propose a Two-stage Rule-Induction Visual Reasoner (TRIVR), which consists of a perception module and a reasoning module, to tackle the challenges of real-world visual reco…
Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) have been widely used for Intelligence Quotient (IQ) test of humans. In this paper, we aim to solve RPM with neural networks in both supervised and unsupervised manners. First, we investigate strategies to reduce over-fitting in supervised learning. We suggest the use of a neural network with deep layers and pre-training on large-scale datasets to improve model generalization. Experiments on the RAVEN dataset show that the overall accuracy of our supervised approach surpasses human-level performance. Second, as an intelligent agent requires to automatically l…
As a step towards improving the abstract reasoning capability of machines, we aim to solve Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) with neural networks, since solving RPM puzzles is highly correlated with human intelligence. Unlike previous methods that use auxiliary annotations or assume hidden rules to produce appropriate feature representation, we only use the ground truth answer of each question for model learning, aiming for an intelligent agent to have a strong learning capability with a small amount of supervision. Based on the RPM problem formulation, the correct answer filled into the miss…
Abstract reasoning refers to the ability to analyze information, discover rules at an intangible level, and solve problems in innovative ways. Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM) test is typically used to examine the capability of abstract reasoning. The subject is asked to identify the correct choice from the answer set to fill the missing panel at the bottom right of RPM (e.g., a 3$\times$3 matrix), following the underlying rules inside the matrix. Recent studies, taking advantage of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), have achieved encouraging progress to accomplish the RPM test. However, …

Identifying driving styles is the task of analyzing the behavior of drivers in order to capture variations that will serve to discriminate different drivers from each other. This task has become a prerequisite for a variety of applications, including usage-based insurance, driver coaching, driver action prediction, and even in designing autonomous vehicles; because driving style encodes essential information needed by these applications. In this paper, we present a deep-neural-network architecture, we term D-CRNN, for building high-fidelity representations for driving style, that combine the p…

Full attention, which generates an attention value per element of the input feature maps, has been successfully demonstrated to be beneficial in visual tasks. In this work, we propose a fully attentional network, termed {\it channel recurrent attention network}, for the task of video pedestrian retrieval. The main attention unit, \textit{channel recurrent attention}, identifies attention maps at the frame level by jointly leveraging spatial and channel patterns via a recurrent neural network. This channel recurrent attention is designed to build a global receptive field by recurrently receivin…

We propose a convolutional recurrent neural network, with Winner-Take-All dropout for high dimensional unsupervised feature learning in multi-dimensional time series. We apply the proposedmethod for object recognition with temporal context in videos and obtain better results than comparable methods in the literature, including the Deep Predictive Coding Networks previously proposed by Chalasani and Principe. Our contributions can be summarized as a scalable reinterpretation of the Deep Predictive Coding Networks trained end-to-end with backpropagation through time, an extension of the previousl…

Gatys et al. (2015) showed that optimizing pixels to match features in a convolutional network with respect reference image features is a way to render images of high visual quality. We show that unrolling this gradient-based optimization yields a recurrent computation that creates images by incrementally adding onto a visual "canvas". We propose a recurrent generative model inspired by this view, and show that it can be trained using adversarial training to generate very good image samples. We also propose a way to quantitatively compare adversarial networks by having the generators and discr…

Deep Learning networks have established themselves as providing state of art performance for semantic segmentation. These techniques are widely applied specifically to medical detection, segmentation and classification. The advent of the U-Net based architecture has become particularly popular for this application. In this paper we present the Dense Recurrent Residual Convolutional Neural Network(Dense R2U CNN) which is a synthesis of Recurrent CNN, Residual Network and Dense Convolutional Network based on the U-Net model architecture. The residual unit helps training deeper network, while the…
There is lots of scientific work about object detection in images. For many applications like for example autonomous driving the actual data on which classification has to be done are videos. This work compares different methods, especially those which use Recurrent Neural Networks to detect objects in videos. We differ between feature-based methods, which feed feature maps of different frames into the recurrent units, box-level methods, which feed bounding boxes with class probabilities into the recurrent units and methods which use flow networks. This study indicates common outcomes of the c…
Traditional Recurrent Neural Networks assume vectorized data as inputs. However many data from modern science and technology come in certain structures such as tensorial time series data. To apply the recurrent neural networks for this type of data, a vectorisation process is necessary, while such a vectorisation leads to the loss of the precise information of the spatial or longitudinal dimensions. In addition, such a vectorized data is not an optimum solution for learning the representation of the longitudinal data. In this paper, we propose a new variant of tensorial neural networks which d…
Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with Long Short-Term memory cells currently hold the best known results in unconstrained handwriting recognition. We show that their performance can be greatly improved using dropout - a recently proposed regularization method for deep architectures. While previous works showed that dropout gave superior performance in the context of convolutional networks, it had never been applied to RNNs. In our approach, dropout is carefully used in the network so that it does not affect the recurrent connections, hence the power of RNNs in modeling sequence is preserved. E…

Recurrent Networks are one of the most powerful and promising artificial neural network algorithms to processing the sequential data such as natural languages, sound, time series data. Unlike traditional feed-forward network, Recurrent Network has a inherent feed back loop that allows to store the temporal context information and pass the state of information to the entire sequences of the events. This helps to achieve the state of art performance in many important tasks such as language modeling, stock market prediction, image captioning, speech recognition, machine translation and object tra…
Convolutional-deconvolution networks can be adopted to perform end-to-end saliency detection. But, they do not work well with objects of multiple scales. To overcome such a limitation, in this work, we propose a recurrent attentional convolutional-deconvolution network (RACDNN). Using spatial transformer and recurrent network units, RACDNN is able to iteratively attend to selected image sub-regions to perform saliency refinement progressively. Besides tackling the scale problem, RACDNN can also learn context-aware features from past iterations to enhance saliency refinement in future iteration…

Dynamical systems can be modelled by partial differential equations and numerical computations are used everywhere in science and engineering. In this work, we investigate the performance of recurrent and convolutional deep neural network architectures to predict the surface waves. The system is governed by the Saint-Venant equations. We improve on the long-term prediction over previous methods while keeping the inference time at a fraction of numerical simulations. We also show that convolutional networks perform at least as well as recurrent networks in this task. Finally, we assess the gene…

In this paper, we propose a deep neural network architecture for object recognition based on recurrent neural networks. The proposed network, called ReNet, replaces the ubiquitous convolution+pooling layer of the deep convolutional neural network with four recurrent neural networks that sweep horizontally and vertically in both directions across the image. We evaluate the proposed ReNet on three widely-used benchmark datasets; MNIST, CIFAR-10 and SVHN. The result suggests that ReNet is a viable alternative to the deep convolutional neural network, and that further investigation is needed.
A group of persons can be analyzed at various semantic levels such as individual actions, their interactions, and the activity of the entire group. In this paper, we propose a structural recurrent neural network (SRNN) that uses a series of interconnected RNNs to jointly capture the actions of individuals, their interactions, as well as the group activity. While previous structural recurrent neural networks assumed that the number of nodes and edges is constant, we use a grid pooling layer to address the fact that the number of individuals in a group can vary. We evaluate two variants of the s…
Real-time classification of Electromyography signals is the most challenging part of controlling a prosthetic hand. Achieving a high classification accuracy of EMG signals in a short delay time is still challenging. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are artificial neural network architectures that are appropriate for sequential data such as EMG. In this paper, after extracting features from a hybrid time-frequency domain (discrete Wavelet transform), we utilize a set of recurrent neural network-based architectures to increase the classification accuracy and reduce the prediction delay time. The…
Knowledge distillation compacts deep networks by letting a small student network learn from a large teacher network. The accuracy of knowledge distillation recently benefited from adding residual layers. We propose to reduce the size of the student network even further by recasting multiple residual layers in the teacher network into a single recurrent student layer. We propose three variants of adding recurrent connections into the student network, and show experimentally on CIFAR-10, Scenes and MiniPlaces, that we can reduce the number of parameters at little loss in accuracy.

In this paper, we present an approach for Recurrent Iterative Gating called RIGNet. The core elements of RIGNet involve recurrent connections that control the flow of information in neural networks in a top-down manner, and different variants on the core structure are considered. The iterative nature of this mechanism allows for gating to spread in both spatial extent and feature space. This is revealed to be a powerful mechanism with broad compatibility with common existing networks. Analysis shows how gating interacts with different network characteristics, and we also show that more shallow…
