Galactic outflows are known to consist of several gas phases, however, so far the connection between these multiple phases has been investigated little and only in a few objects. In this paper, we analyse MUSE/VLT data of 26 local (U)LIRGs and study their ionised and neutral atomic phases. We also include objects from the literature to obtain a total sample of 31 galaxies with spatially resolved multi-phase outflow information. We find that the ionized phase of the outflows has on average an electron density three times higher than the disc ($n_{\rm e, disc}$ $\sim$ 145 cm$^{-3}$ vs $n_{\rm e, outflow}$ $\sim$ 500 cm$^{-3}$), suggesting that cloud compression in the outflow is more important that cloud dissipation. We find that the difference in extinction between outflow and disc correlates with the outflow gas mass. Together with the analysis of the outflow velocities, this suggests that at least some of the outflows are associated with the ejection of dusty clouds from the disc. This may support models where radiation pressure on dust contributes to driving galactic outflows. The presence of dust in outflows is relevant for potential formation of molecules inside them. We combine our data with millimetre data to investigate the molecular phase. We find that the molecular phase accounts for more than 60 $\%$ of the total mass outflow rate in most objects and this fraction is higher in AGN-dominated systems. The neutral atomic phase contributes of the order of 10 $\%$, while the ionized phase is negligible. The ionized-to-molecular mass outflow rate declines slightly with AGN luminosity, although with a large scatter.
Observations and simulations show that outflows in active galactic nuclei (AGN) contain gas in different phases. To understand their true impact on galaxy evolution, we advocate consistent and unbiased investigation of these multiphase winds in large AGN samples.
We report on quasar outflow properties revealed by analyzing more than 60 composite outflow spectra built from $\sim 60\,000$ CIV absorption troughs in the SDSS-III/BOSS DR12QBAL catalog. We assess the dependences of the equivalent widths of many outflow metal absorption features on outflow velocity, trough width and position, and quasar magnitude and redshift. The evolution of the equivalent widths of the OVI and NV lines with outflow velocity correlates with that of the mean absorption-line width, the outflow electron density, and the strength of lines arising from collisionally-excited meta…
We perform Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Monte-Carlo radiative transfer calculations on a suite of $2500$ models of multiphase, outflowing media, which are characterized by $14$ parameters. We focus on the Ly$α$ spectra emerging from these media, and investigate which properties are dominant in shaping the emerging Ly$α$ profile. Multiphase models give rise to a wide variety of emerging spectra, including single, double and triple peaked spectra. We find that the dominant parameters in shaping the spectra include (i) the cloud covering factor, $f_c$, in agreement with earlier studies, and (ii) the tempera…
Galactic outflows are ubiquitously observed in star-forming disk galaxies and are critical for galaxy formation. Supernovae (SNe) play the key role in driving the outflows, but there is no consensus as to how much energy, mass and metal they can launch out of the disk. We perform 3D, high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations to study SNe-driven outflows from stratified media. Assuming SN rate scales with gas surface density $Σ_{\rm{gas}}$ as in the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, we find the mass loading factor, $η_m$, defined as the mass outflow flux divided by the star formation surface dens…
We present results from a comprehensive study of ultrafast outflows (UFOs) detected in a sample of fourteen quasars, twelve of which are gravitationally lensed, in a redshift range of 1.41-3.91, near the peak of the AGN and star formation activity. New XMM-Newton observations are presented for six of them which were selected to be lensed and contain a narrow absorption line (NAL) in their UV spectra. Another lensed quasar was added to the sample, albeit already studied, because it was not searched for UFOs. The remaining seven quasars of our sample are known to contain UFOs. The main goals of …
Large scale outflows in star-forming galaxies are observed to be ubiquitous, and are a key aspect of theoretical modeling of galactic evolution in a cosmological context, the focus of the SMAUG (Simulating Multiscale Astrophysics to Understand Galaxies) project. Gas blown out from galactic disks, similar to gas within galaxies, consists of multiple phases with large contrasts of density, temperature, and other properties. To study multiphase outflows as emergent phenomena, we run a suite of ~pc-resolution local galactic disk simulations using the TIGRESS framework. Explicit modeling of the int…

Multiphase Gas Nature in the Sub-parsec Region of the Active Galactic Nuclei. III. Eddington Ratio Dependence on the Structures of Dusty and Dust-free Outflows
Galactic outflows produced by stellar feedback are known to be multiphase in nature. Both observations and simulations indicate that the material within several kpc of galactic disk mid-planes consists of warm clouds embedded within a hot wind. A theoretical understanding of the outflow phenomenon, including both winds and fountain flows, requires study of the interactions among thermal phases. We develop a method to quantify these interactions via measurements of mass, momentum, and energy flux exchanges using temporally and spatially averaged quantities and conservation laws. We apply this m…
Galactic outflows commonly contain multiphase gas, and its physical origin requires explanation. Using the CGOLS (Cholla Galactic OutfLow Simulations) suite of high-resolution isolated galaxy models, we demonstrate the viability of rapid radiative cooling as a source of fast-moving ($v \sim 1000$ km/s), cool ($10^4$ K) gas observed in absorption line studies of outflows around some star-forming galaxies. By varying the mass-loading and geometry of the simulated winds, we identify a region of parameter space that leads to cool gas in outflows. In particular, when using an analytically-motivated…
Using a set of high resolution hydrodynamical simulations run with the Cholla code, we investigate how mass and momentum couple to the multiphase components of galactic winds. The simulations model the interaction between a hot wind driven by supernova explosions and a cooler, denser cloud of interstellar or circumgalactic media. By resolving scales of $Δx<0.1$ pc over $>100$ pc distances our calculations capture how the cloud disruption leads to a distribution of densities and temperatures in the resulting multiphase outflow, and quantify the mass and momentum associated with each phase. We f…
Mass outflow rates and loading factors are typically used to infer the quenching potential of galactic-scale outflows. However, these generally rely on observations of a single gas phase which can severely underestimate the total ejected gas mass. To address this, we use observations of high mass ($\geqslant$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$), normal star-forming galaxies at $z\sim$0 from the MaNGA, xCOLD GASS, xGASS and ALFALFA surveys and a stacking of NaD, H$α$, CO(1-0) and HI 21cm tracers with the aim of placing constraints on an average, total mass outflow rate and loading factor. We find detections …
Observations of emission lines in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) often find fast (~1000 km s^-1) outflows extending to kiloparsec scales, seen in ionised, neutral atomic and molecular gas. In this work we present radiative transfer calculations of emission lines in hydrodynamic simulations of AGN outflows driven by a hot wind bubble, including non-equilibrium chemistry, to explore how these lines trace the physical properties of the multiphase outflow. We find that the hot bubble compresses the line-emitting gas, resulting in higher pressures than in the ambient ISM or that would be produced by …
We use Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) observations of the inner 3.5$\times$3.5 kpc$^2$ of the radio galaxy Cygnus A to map the gas excitation and kinematics at a spatial resolution of 200 pc. The emission of the ionised gas shows a biconical morphology, with half-opening angle of 45$^\circ$ and oriented along the position angle of the radio jet. Coronal line emission is seen within the cone, up to 1.75 kpc from the nucleus, with higher ionisation gas observed in the easterly side. The H$_2$ and [Fe II] emission lines are consistent with excitation by the central AGN, w…
Gas blown away from galactic disks by supernova (SN) feedback plays a key role in galaxy evolution. We investigate outflows utilizing the solar neighborhood model of our high-resolution, local galactic disk simulation suite, TIGRESS. In our numerical implementation, star formation and SN feedback are self-consistently treated and well resolved in the multiphase, turbulent, magnetized interstellar medium. Bursts of star formation produce spatially and temporally correlated SNe that drive strong outflows, consisting of hot (T>5x10^5K) winds and warm (5050K < T < 2x10^4K) fountains. The hot gas a…
We present constraints on the molecular outflows in a sample of five Hyper-Luminous Infrared Galaxies using Herschel observations of the OH doublet at 119 μm. We have detected the OH doublet in three cases: one purely in emission and two purely in absorption. The observed emission profile has a significant blueshifted wing suggesting the possibility of tracing an outflow. Out of the two absorption profiles, one seems to be consistent with the systemic velocity while the other clearly indicates the presence of a molecular outflow whose maximum velocity is about ~1500 km/s. Our analysis shows th…
Photoionization modeling of certain low-ionization broad absorption lines in quasars implies very compact (Delta R~0.01 pc), galaxy-scale (R kpc) absorbers blueshifted by several 1000 km s^-1. While these are likely signatures of quasar outflows, the lifetimes of such compact absorbers are too short for them to be direct ejecta from a nuclear wind. Instead, I argue that the absorbing clouds must be transient and created in situ. Following arguments detailed by Faucher-Giguere, Quataert, & Murray (2011), I show that a model in which the cool absorbers form in radiative shocks arising when a qua…
Galactic outflows have density, temperature, and velocity variations at least as large as that of the multiphase, turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) from which they originate. We have conducted a suite of parsec-resolution numerical simulations using the TIGRESS framework, in which outflows emerge as a consequence of interaction between supernovae (SNe) and the star-forming ISM. The outflowing gas is characterized by two distinct thermal phases, cool (T<10^4 K) and hot (T>10^6 K), with most mass carried by the cool phase and most energy and newly-injected metals carried by the hot phase. Both…

The Chevalier & Clegg (1985) spherical wind is widely used to model galactic outflows. Efforts are underway to understand the production of multiphase gas in such outflows. Since the important scales for the multiphase gas are very small compared to the size of the wind, it is very useful to have a local model of the cold gas interacting with a volume-filling expanding wind. In this note we explicitly derive the governing hydrodynamic equations in such a local box for the first time. We highlight that the expansion in a wind occurs only in the transverse direction, and this results in anisotro…

Substantial evidence in the last few decades suggests that outflows from supermassive black holes (SMBH) may play a significant role in the evolution of galaxies.Large-scale outflows known as warm absorbers (WA) and fast disk winds known as ultra-fast outflows (UFO) are commonly found in the spectra of many Seyfert galaxies and quasars, and a correlation has been suggested between them. Recent detections of low ionization and low column density outflows, but with a high velocity comparable to UFOs, challenge such initial possible correlations. Observations of UFOs in AGN indicate that their en…
Outflows and feedback are key ingredients of galaxy evolution. Evidence for an outflow arising from the Galactic center (GC) has recently been discovered at different wavelength. We show that the X-ray, radio, and infrared emissions are deeply interconnected, affecting one another and forming coherent features on scales of hundreds of parsecs, therefore indicating a common physical link associated with the GC outflow. We debate the location of the northern chimney and suggest that it might be located on the front side of the GC because of a significant tilt of the chimneys toward us. We report…

We present UV to NIR spectroscopic observations of the quasar J0015+1842 and its proximate molecular absorber at z=2.631. The [OIII] emission line of the quasar is composed of a broad (FWHM~1600 km/s), spatially-unresolved component, blueshifted by ~600 km/s from a narrow, spatially-resolved component (FWHM~650 km/s). The wide, blueshifted, unresolved component is consistent with the presence of outflowing gas in the nuclear region. The narrow component can be further decomposed into a blue and a red blob with velocity width of several hundred km/s each, seen ~5 pkpc on opposite spatial locati…

We investigate the presence of extended ionized outflows in 18 luminous type 2 AGNs (11 quasars and 7 high luminosity Seyfert 2s) at 0.3<z<0.6 based on VLT-FORS2 spectroscopy. We infer typical lower limits on the radial sizes of the outflows R>=severalx100 pc and upper limits R<1-2 kpc. Our results are inconsistent with related studies which suggest that large scale R~several-15 kpc are ubiquitous in QSO2. We study the possible causes of discrepancy and propose that seeing smearing is the cause of the large inferred sizes. The implications in our understanding of the feedback phenomenon are im…
As part of our program to identify host galaxies of known z=2-3 MgII absorbers with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), we discovered a compact group giving rise to a z=2.431 DLA with ultra-strong MgII absorption in quasar field J234628+124859. The group consists of four star-forming galaxies within 8-28 kpc and $v\sim40-340$ km s$^{-1}$ of each other, where tidal streams are weakly visible in deep HST imaging. The group geometric centre is D=25 kpc from the quasar (D=20-40 kpc for each galaxy). Galaxy G1 dominates the group ($1.66L_{\ast}$, ${\rm SFR}_{\rm FUV}=11.6$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) whi…
We report ALMA and SMA observations of the luminous infrared merger NGC 3256, the most luminous galaxy within z=0.01. Both of the two merger nuclei separated by 5" (0.8 kpc) on the sky have a compact concentration of molecular gas, i.e., nuclear disks with Sigma_mol > 10^3 Msun pc^-2. The one at the northern nucleus is face-on while the southern nuclear disk is almost edge-on. The northern nucleus is more massive and has molecular arcs and spiral arms around. The high-velocity molecular gas previously found in the system is resolved to two molecular outflows associated with each of the two nuc…
We present new spectroscopic observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 2 ($z \sim$ 3.1). We observed extended Ly$α$ emission in three distinct regions, where the highest Ly$α$ surface brightness (SB) center is far away from the known continuum sources. We searched through the MOSFIRE slits that cover the high Ly$α$ SB regions, but were unable to detect any significant nebular emission near the highest SB center. We further mapped the flux ratio of the blue peak to the red peak and found it is anti-correlated with Ly$α$ SB with a power-law index of $\sim$ -0.4. We used radiative transfer models wi…
We present the detection and morphological characterization of hot molecular gas outflows in nearby ultra-luminous infrared galaxies, using the near-IR integral-field spectrograph SINFONI on the VLT. We detect outflows observed in the 2.12 micron H$_{2}$ 1-0 S(1) line for three out of four ULIRGs analyzed; IRAS 12112+0305, 14348-1447, and 22491-1808. The outflows are mapped on scales of 0.7-1.6 kpc, show typical outflow velocities of 300-500 km/s, and appear to originate from the nuclear region. The outflows comprise hot molecular gas masses of ~6-8x10$^3$ M(sun). Assuming a hot-to-cold molecu…
We present new upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) HI 21-cm observations of the ultra-luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 10565+2448, previously reported to show blueshifted, broad, and shallow HI absorption indicating an outflow. Our higher spatial resolution observations have localised this blueshifted outflow, which is $\sim$ 1.36 kpc southwest of the radio centre and has a blueshifted velocity of $\sim 148\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$ and a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim 581\,\rm km\,s^{-1}$. The spatial extent and kinematic properties of the HI outflow are consistent with the previ…
We present ALMA rest-frame 230 GHz continuum and CO(2-1) line observations of the nearby Compton-thick Seyfert galaxy ESO428-G14, with angular resolution 0.7 arcsec (78 pc). We detect CO(2-1) emission from spiral arms and a circum-nuclear ring with 200 pc radius, and from a transverse gas lane with size of $\sim100$ pc, which crosses the nucleus and connects the two portions the circumnuclear ring. The molecular gas in the host galaxy is distributed in a rotating disk with intrinsic circular velocity $v_{rot}=135$ km/s, inclination $i=57$ deg, and dynamical mass $M_{dyn }=5\times 10^9~\rm M_{\…
Many studies have considered the roles of clouds, outflows, and turbulence in producing the broad emission and absorption lines in the spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, these are often treated as separate or even competing models. Here, we consider the possibility that AGN clouds are condensations formed within the thermally unstable zones of outflows and then compare the typical sizes of such condensations with the injection scale $k_0^{-1} \sim L_0$ of turbulence, where $L_0$ is assumed to be the scale height of a representative global outflow model. We find that for broad l…
Imaging observations of IRAS 17527-2439 are obtained in the near-IR JHK photometric bands and in a narrow-band filter centred at the wavelength of the H_2 1-0 S(1) line. The continuum-subtracted H_2 image is used to identify outflows. The data obtained in this study are used in conjunction with Spitzer, AKARI, and IRAS data. A parsec-scale bipolar outflow is discovered in our H_2 line image, which is supported by the detection in the archival Spitzer images. The H_2 image exhibits signs of precession of the main jet and shows tentative evidence for a second outflow. These suggest the possibili…
We report on the determination of electron densities, and their impact on the outflow masses and rates, measured in the central few hundred parsecs of 11 local luminous active galaxies. We show that the peak of the integrated line emission in the AGN is significantly offset from the systemic velocity as traced by the stellar absorption features, indicating that the profiles are dominated by outflow. In contrast, matched inactive galaxies are characterised by a systemic peak and weaker outflow wing. We present three independent estimates of the electron density in these AGN, discussing the meri…
We present new observations of Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) Blob 1 (LAB1) in the SSA22 protocluster region ($z$ = 3.09) using the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) and the Keck Multi-object Spectrometer for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE). By applying matched filtering to the KCWI datacube, we have created a narrow-band Ly$α$ image and identified several prominent features. By comparing the spatial distributions and intensities of Ly$α$ and H$β$, we find that recombination of photo-ionized HI gas followed by resonant scattering is sufficient to explain all the observed Ly$α$/H$β$ ratios. We further decode the…
In order to construct a sample of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, with infrared luminosity, $L_{\rm IR} > 10^{12}$ L$_{\odot}$) at 0.5 < z < 1, we are conducting an optical follow-up program for bright 90-$μ$m FIR sources with a faint optical (i < 20) counterpart selected in the AKARI Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) Bright Source catalog (Ver.2). AKARI-FIS-V2 J0916248+073034, identified as a ULIRG at z = 0.49 in the spectroscopic follow-up observation, indicates signatures of an extremely strong outflow in its emission line profiles. Its [OIII] 5007Å emission line shows FWHM of 1830 km s…
Recent observations of Seyfert galaxies indicate that low power, misaligned jets can undergo significant interaction with the gas in the galactic disc and may be able to drive large-scale, multiphase outflows. We apply our novel sub-grid model for Blandford-Znajek jets to simulations of the central regions of Seyferts, in which a black hole is embedded in a dense, sub-kpc circumnuclear disc (CND) and surrounded by a dilute circumgalactic medium (CGM). We find that the variability of the accretion flow is highly sensitive both to the jet power and to the CND thermodynamics and, ultimately, is d…
BOSS-EUVLG1 is the most ultraviolet (UV) and Ly$α$ luminous galaxy detected so far in the Universe, going through a very active starburst phase, and forming stars at a rate (SFR) of 955 $\pm$ 118 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We report the detection of a broad H$α$ component carrying 25% of the total H$α$ flux. The broad H$α$ line traces a fast and massive ionized gas outflow characterized by a total mass, $\log(M_{out}[M_{\odot}]),$ of 7.94 $\pm$ 0.15, an outflowing velocity (V$_{out}$) of 573 $\pm$ 151 km s$^{-1}$, and an outflowing mass rate ($\dot{M}_{out}$) of 44 $\pm$ 20 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. …
We introduce the Stars and MUltiphase Gas in GaLaxiEs -- SMUGGLE model, an explicit and comprehensive stellar feedback model for the moving-mesh code arepo. This novel sub-resolution model resolves the multiphase gas structure of the interstellar medium and self-consistently generates gaseous outflows. The model implements crucial aspects of stellar feedback including photoionization, radiation pressure, energy and momentum injection from stellar winds and from supernovae. We explore this model in high-resolution isolated simulations of Milky Way-like disc galaxies. Stellar feedback regulates …
Combining large-area optical quasar surveys with the new far-infrared Herschel-ATLAS Data Release 1, we search for an observational signature associated with the minority of quasars possessing bright far-infrared (FIR) luminosities. We find that FIR-bright quasars show broad CIV emission line blueshifts in excess of that expected from the optical luminosity alone, indicating particularly powerful nuclear outflows. The quasars show no signs of having redder optical colours than the general ensemble of optically-selected quasars, ruling out differences in line-of-sight dust within the host galax…
