In this paper, we investigate the proof complexity of a wide range of substructural systems. For any proof system $\mathbf{P}$ at least as strong as Full Lambek calculus, $\mathbf{FL}$, and polynomially simulated by the extended Frege system for some infinite branching super-intuitionistic logic, we present an exponential lower bound on the proof lengths. More precisely, we will provide a sequence of $\mathbf{P}$-provable formulas $\{A_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ such that the length of the shortest $\mathbf{P}$-proof for $A_n$ is exponential in the length of $A_n$. The lower bound also extends to the number of proof-lines (proof-lengths) in any Frege system (extended Frege system) for a logic between $\mathsf{FL}$ and any infinite branching super-intuitionistic logic. We will also prove a similar result for the proof systems and logics extending Visser's basic propositional calculus $\mathbf{BPC}$ and its logic $\mathsf{BPC}$, respectively. Finally, in the classical substructural setting, we will establish an exponential lower bound on the number of proof-lines in any proof system polynomially simulated by the cut-free version of $\mathbf{CFL_{ew}}$.
We briefly examine the modal formulae that can be derived in Multiplicative Additive Linear Logic (MALL) and some extensions by using Tarksi's extensional modal operators. We also breifly compare this with a substructural form of the modal logic K.
We present a substructural epistemic logic, based on Boolean BI, in which the epistemic modalities are parametrized on agents' local resources. The new modalities can be seen as generalizations of the usual epistemic modalities. The logic combines Boolean BI's resource semantics --- we introduce BI and its resource semantics at some length --- with epistemic agency. We illustrate the use of the logic in systems modelling by discussing some examples about access control, including semaphores, using resource tokens. We also give a labelled tableaux calculus and establish soundness and completene…
We investigate the non-elementary computational complexity of a family of substructural logics without contraction. With the aid of the technique pioneered by Lazić and Schmitz (2015), we show that the deducibility problem for full Lambek calculus with exchange and weakening ($\mathbf{FL}_{\mathbf{ew}}$) is not in Elementary (i.e., the class of decision problems that can be decided in time bounded by an elementary recursive function), but is in PR (i.e., the class of decision problems that can be decided in time bounded by a primitive recursive function). More precisely, we show that this prob…
We present a uniform method of density elimination for several semilinear substructural logics. Especially, the density elimination for the involutive uninorm logic IUL is proved. Then the standard completeness of IUL follows as a lemma by virtue of previous work by Metcalfe and Montagna.
In this paper, three semilinear substructural logics ULw, IULw and HpsUL*w are constructed. Then the completeness of ULw and IULw with respect to classes of finite UL and IUL-algebras, respectively, is proved. Algebraically, non-integral ULw and IULw-algebras have the finite embeddability property, which gives a characterization for finite UL and IUL-algebras. Furthermore, the standard completeness of ULw, IULw and HpsUL*w is proved, which shows that they are substructural fuzzy logics.
In an article dating back in 1992, Kosta Došen initiated a project of modal translations in substructural logics, aiming at generalizing the well-known Gödel-McKinsey-Tarski translation of intuitionistic logic into {\bf S4}. Došen's translation worked well for (variants of) {\bf BCI} and stronger systems ({\bf BCW}, {\bf BCK}), but not for systems below {\bf BCI}. Dropping structural rules results in logic systems without distribution. In this article, we show, via translation, that every substructural (indeed, every non-distributive) logic is a fragment of a corresponding sorted, residuated (…
In this paper we study some fragments without implications of the (Hilbert) full Lambek logic $\mathbf{HFL}$ and also some fragments without implications of some of the substructural extensions of that logic. To do this, we perform an algebraic analysis of the Gentzen systems defined by the substructural calculi $\FL_σ$. Such systems are extensions of the full Lambek calculus $\FL$ with the rules codified by a subsequence, $σ$, of the sequence $e w_l w_r c$; where $e$ stands for \emph{exchange}, $w_l$ for \emph{left weakening}, $w_r$ for \emph{right weakening}, and $c$ for \emph{contraction}. …
A theorem of alternatives provides a reduction of validity in a substructural logic to validity in its multiplicative fragment. Notable examples include a theorem of Arnon Avron that reduces the validity of a disjunction of multiplicative formulas in the R-mingle logic RM to the validity of a linear combination of these formulas, and Gordan's theorem for solutions of linear systems over the real numbers, that yields an analogous reduction for validity in Abelian logic A. In this paper, general conditions are provided for axiomatic extensions of involutive uninorm logic without additive constan…
We introduce a sequent calculus FL' for non-commutative substructural logic. It has at most one formula on the right side of sequent, and excludes three structural inference rules, i.e. contraction, weakening and exchange. (FL' is based on our investigations of the Gentzen-style natural deduction for non-commutative substructural logics.) FL' has the same proof strength as the standard sequent calculus FL (Full Lambek), which is the basic sequent calculus for all other substructural logics. For the standard FL, we use Ono's formulation. Although FL' and the standard FL are equivalent, there is…

An algebraic proof is presented for the finite strong standard completeness of involutive uninorm logic with fixed point. The result may provide a first step towards settling the open standard completeness problem for involutive uninorm logic posed in [G. Metcalfe, F. Montagna: Substructural fuzzy logics, J. Symb. Logic, 72, 834-864 (2007)].
The logic of bunched implications (BI) is a substructural logic that forms the backbone of separation logic, the much studied logic for reasoning about heap-manipulating programs. Although the proof theory and metatheory of BI are mathematically involved, the formalization of important metatheoretical results is still incipient. In this paper we present a self-contained formalized, in the Coq proof assistant, proof of a central metatheoretical property of BI: cut elimination for its sequent calculus. The presented proof is *semantic*, in the sense that is obtained by interpreting sequents in a…
We develop a Gentzen-style proof theory for super-Belnap logics (extensions of the four-valued Dunn-Belnap logic), expanding on an approach initiated by Pynko. We show that just like substructural logics may be understood proof-theoretically as logics which relax the structural rules of classical logic but keep its logical rules as well as the rules of Identity and Cut, super-Belnap logics may be seen as logics which relax Identity and Cut but keep the logical rules as well as the structural rules of classical logic. A generalization of the cut elimination theorem for classical propositional l…
The present paper aims at establishing formal connections between correspondence phenomena, well known from the area of modal logic, and the theory of display calculi, originated by Belnap. These connections have been seminally observed and exploited by Marcus Kracht, in the context of his characterization of the modal axioms (which he calls primitive formulas) which can be effectively transformed into `analytic' structural rules of display calculi. In this context, a rule is `analytic' if adding it to a display calculus preserves Belnap's cut-elimination theorem. In recent years, the state-of…

The present paper provides an analysis of the existing proof systems for dynamic epistemic logic from the viewpoint of proof-theoretic semantics. Dynamic epistemic logic is one of the best known members of a family of logical systems which have been successfully applied to diverse scientific disciplines, but the proof theoretic treatment of which presents many difficulties. After an illustration of the proof-theoretic semantic principles most relevant to the treatment of logical connectives, we turn to illustrating the main features of display calculi, a proof-theoretic paradigm which has been…
We present a sequent-style proof system for provability logic GL that admits so-called circular proofs. For these proofs, the graph underlying a proof is not a finite tree but is allowed to contain cycles. As an application, we establish Lindon interpolation for GL syntactically.
Analytic proof calculi are introduced for box and diamond fragments of basic modal fuzzy logics that combine the Kripke semantics of modal logic K with the many-valued semantics of Gödel logic. The calculi are used to establish completeness and complexity results for these fragments.
This paper develops an algorithmic-based approach for proving inductive properties of propositional sequent systems such as admissibility, invertibility, cut-elimination, and identity expansion. Although undecidable in general, these structural properties are crucial in proof theory because they can reduce the proof-search effort and further be used as scaffolding for obtaining other meta-results such as consistency. The algorithms -- which take advantage of the rewriting logic meta-logical framework, and use rewrite- and narrowing-based reasoning -- are explained in detail and illustrated wit…
We give a procedure for counting the number of different proofs of a formula in various sorts of propositional logic. This number is either an integer (that may be 0 if the formula is not provable) or infinite.
In 1933, Gödel considered two modal approaches to describing provability. One captured formal provability and resulted in the logic GL and Solovay's Completeness Theorem. The other was based on the modal logic S4 and led to Artemov's Logic of Proofs LP. In this paper, we study introduced by the author logic GLA, which is a fusion of GL and LP in the union of their languages. GLA is supplied with a Kripke-style semantics and the corresponding completeness theorem. Soundness and completeness of GLA with respect to the arithmetical provability semantics is established.

We associate to every proof structure in multiplicative linear logic an ideal which represents the logical content of the proof as polynomial equations. We show how cut-elimination in multiplicative proof nets corresponds to instances of the Buchberger algorithm for computing Gröbner bases in elimination theory.
In this paper we present a tableau proof system for first order logic of proofs FOLP. We show that the tableau system is sound and complete with respect to Mkrtychev models of FOLP.
Following G. Mints(Kluwer 2000 and draft 2013), we present terminating and bicomplete proof searches in multi-succedent sequent calculi for intuitionistic propositional logic, fragments of intuitionistic predicate logic and full intuitionistic predicate logic in the spirit of Schuette's schema.
We present a sequent calculus for the Grzegorczyk modal logic Grz allowing cyclic and other non-well-founded proofs and obtain the cut-elimination theorem for it by constructing a continuous cut-elimination mapping acting on these proofs. As an application, we establish the Lyndon interpolation property for the logic Grz proof-theoretically.
We develop a semantics for logics of imperfect information with respect to general models. Then we build a proof system and prove its soundness and completeness with respect to this semantics.
We present a simpler way than usual to deduce the completeness theorem for the second-oder classical logic from the first-order one. We also extend our method to the case of second-order intuitionistic logic.
We present a sequent calculus for the modal Grzegorczyk logic Grz allowing non-well-founded proofs and obtain the cut-elimination theorem for it by constructing a continuous cut-elimination mapping acting on these proofs.
We present a sequent calculus for the weak Grzegorczyk logic Go allowing non-well-founded proofs and obtain the cut-elimination theorem for it by constructing a continuous cut-elimination mapping acting on these proofs.
By a pure logical framework we mean a framework which does not rely on any particular formal calculus. For example, Metamath is an instance of a pure logical framework. Another example is the Russell system (https://github.com/dmitry-vlasov/russell). In this paper, we describe the proof search algorithm used in Russell. The algorithm is proved to be correct and complete, i.e. it gives only valid proofs and any valid proof can be found (up to a substitution) by the proposed algorithm.
Proof-theoretic methods are developed for subsystems of Johansson's logic obtained by extending the positive fragment of intuitionistic logic with weak negations. These methods are exploited to establish properties of the logical systems. In particular, cut-free complete sequent calculi are introduced and used to provide a proof of the fact that the systems satisfy the Craig interpolation property. Alternative versions of the calculi are later obtained by means of an appropriate loop-checking history mechanism. Termination of the new calculi is proved, and used to conclude that the considered …
We introduce proper display calculi for basic monotonic modal logic, the conditional logic CK and a number of their axiomatic extensions. These calculi are sound, complete, conservative and enjoy cut elimination and subformula property. Our proposal applies the multi-type methodology in the design of display calculi, starting from a semantic analysis based on the translation from monotonic modal logic to normal bi-modal logic.
