We develop a general formalism for the magnetic oscillations (MO) in two dimensional (2D) systems. We consider general 2D Landau levels, which may depend on other variable or indices, besides the perpendicular magnetic field. In the ground state, we obtain expressions for the MO phase and amplitude. From this we use a Fourier expansion to write the MO, with the first term being a sawtooth oscillation. We also consider the effects of finite temperature, impurities or lattice imperfections, assuming a general broadening of the Landau levels. We develop two methods for describing these damping effects in the MO. One in terms of the occupancy of the Landau levels, the other in terms of reduction factors, which results in a generalization of the Lifshits-Kosevich (LK) formula. We show that the first approach is particularly useful at very low damping, when only the states close to the Fermi energy are excited. In contrast, the LK formula may be more convenient at higher damping, when only few terms are needed in its harmonic expansion. We compare different damping situations, showing how the MO are broadened in each case. The general formulation presented allows to relate the properties of the MO with those of the 2D systems.
Quantitative understanding of magnetic vortex oscillations driven by spin-polarized out-of-plane dc current: Analytical and micromagnetic numerical study
We investigate the diffusive magnetotransport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas residing in a wrinkled nanostructure. The curved geometry of the nanostructure renders an effective inhomogeneous magnetic field which, in turns, yields Weiss oscillations. Since the relative strength of the effective inhomogeneous magnetic field can be tailored by changing the direction of the externally applied magnetic field, these Weiss oscillations exhibit a strong directional dependence. For large external magnetic fields we also find an anisotropic positive magnetoresistance.
Investigating Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in high magnetic fields, we experimentally infer the electronic band structure of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the ionic-liquid gated amorphous (a)-LaAlO$_3$/KTaO$_3$ interface. The angular dependence of SdH oscillations indicates a 2D confinement of a majority of electrons at the interface. However, additional SdH oscillations with an angle-independent frequency observed at high tilt angles indicate the coexistence of 3D charge carriers extending deep into the KTaO$_3$. The SdH oscillations measured in magnetic fields perp…
Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations are directly observed in undoped antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4. With increasing magnetic fields, the oscillation period decreases gradually in the magnetic transition from canted antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism and then saturates in high magnetic fields, indicating the field-induced evolution of the band structure. From the analysis of the high-field oscillations, a nontrivial Berry phase and a small effective mass are extracted, in agreement with the predicted Weyl semimetal phase in ferromagnetic MnBi2Te4. Furthermore, rotating the magne…
We review the physics of magnetic quantum oscillations in quasi-one dimensional conductors with an open Fermi surface, in the presence of modulated order. We emphasize the difference between situations where a modulation couples states on the same side of the Fermi surface and a modulation couples states on opposite sides of the Fermi surface. We also consider cases where several modulations coexist, which may lead to a complex reorganization of the Fermi surface. The interplay between nesting effects and magnetic breakdown is discussed. The experimental situation is reviewed.
We have performed magnetotransport measurements in CeTe$_{3}$ thin films down to $0.2~{\rm K}$. It is known that CeTe$_{3}$ has two magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1} \approx 3~{\rm K}$ and $T_{\rm N2} \approx 1~{\rm K}$. A clear Shubnikov-de-Haas (SdH) oscillation was observed at $4~{\rm K}$, demonstrating the strong two-dimensional nature in this material. Below $T_{\rm N2}$, the SdH oscillation has two frequencies, indicating that the Fermi surface could be slightly modulated due to the second magnetic transition. We also observed a magnetic hysteresis in the SdH oscillation below $T_{\rm …
Magnetic oscillation is a generic property of electronic conductors under magnetic fields and widely appreciated as a useful probe of their electronic band structure, i.e., the Fermi surface geometry. However, the usage of the strong static magnetic field makes the measurement insensitive to the magnetic order of the target material. That is, the magnetic order is anyhow turned into a forced ferromagnetic one. Here we theoretically propose an experimental method of measuring the magnetic oscillation in a magnetic-order-resolved way by using the azimuthal cylindrical vector (CV) beam, an exampl…
