Recently, a considerable literature has grown up around the theme of Graph Convolutional Network (GCN). How to effectively leverage the rich structural information in complex graphs, such as knowledge graphs with heterogeneous types of entities and relations, is a primary open challenge in the field. Most GCN methods are either restricted to graphs with a homogeneous type of edges (e.g., citation links only), or focusing on representation learning for nodes only instead of jointly propagating and updating the embeddings of both nodes and edges for target-driven objectives. This paper addresses these limitations by proposing a novel framework, namely the Knowledge Embedding based Graph Convolutional Network (KE-GCN), which combines the power of GCNs in graph-based belief propagation and the strengths of advanced knowledge embedding (a.k.a. knowledge graph embedding) methods, and goes beyond. Our theoretical analysis shows that KE-GCN offers an elegant unification of several well-known GCN methods as specific cases, with a new perspective of graph convolution. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show the advantageous performance of KE-GCN over strong baseline methods in the tasks of knowledge graph alignment and entity classification.
We consider the problem of learning efficient and inductive graph convolutional networks for text classification with a large number of examples and features. Existing state-of-the-art graph embedding based methods such as predictive text embedding (PTE) and TextGCN have shortcomings in terms of predictive performance, scalability and inductive capability. To address these limitations, we propose a heterogeneous graph convolutional network (HeteGCN) modeling approach that unites the best aspects of PTE and TextGCN together. The main idea is to learn feature embeddings and derive document embed…
Graph embedding is an important approach for graph analysis tasks such as node classification and link prediction. The goal of graph embedding is to find a low dimensional representation of graph nodes that preserves the graph information. Recent methods like Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) try to consider node attributes (if available) besides node relations and learn node embeddings for unsupervised and semi-supervised tasks on graphs. On the other hand, multi-layer graph analysis has been received attention recently. However, the existing methods for multi-layer graph embedding cannot inc…

Graph embedding, aiming to learn low-dimensional representations (aka. embeddings) of nodes, has received significant attention recently. Recent years have witnessed a surge of efforts made on static graphs, among which Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) has emerged as an effective class of models. However, these methods mainly focus on the static graph embedding. In this work, we propose an efficient dynamic graph embedding approach, Dynamic Graph Convolutional Network (DyGCN), which is an extension of GCN-based methods. We naturally generalizes the embedding propagation scheme of GCN to dynam…

Attributed graph embedding, which learns vector representations from graph topology and node features, is a challenging task for graph analysis. Recently, methods based on graph convolutional networks (GCNs) have made great progress on this task. However, existing GCN-based methods have three major drawbacks. Firstly, our experiments indicate that the entanglement of graph convolutional filters and weight matrices will harm both the performance and robustness. Secondly, we show that graph convolutional filters in these methods reveal to be special cases of generalized Laplacian smoothing filters…

Graph representation learning is a fundamental task in various applications that strives to learn low-dimensional embeddings for nodes that can preserve graph topology information. However, many existing methods focus on static graphs while ignoring evolving graph patterns. Inspired by the success of graph convolutional networks(GCNs) in static graph embedding, we propose a novel k-core based temporal graph convolutional network, the CTGCN, to learn node representations for dynamic graphs. In contrast to previous dynamic graph embedding methods, CTGCN can preserve both local connective proximi…

However, asymmetric nature of directed networks poses many challenges as how to best preserve edge directions in the embedding process. Here, we propose a novel deep asymmetric a…

Knowledge graph embedding methods learn embeddings of entities and relations in a low dimensional space which can be used for various downstream machine learning tasks such as link prediction and entity matching. Various graph convolutional network methods have been proposed which use different types of information to learn the features of entities and relations. However, these methods assign the same weight (importance) to the neighbors when aggregating the information, ignoring the role of different relations with the neighboring entities. To this end, we propose a relation-aware graph atten…

Link prediction is an important and frequently studied task that contributes to an understanding of the structure of knowledge graphs (KGs) in statistical relational learning. Inspired by the success of graph convolutional networks (GCN) in modeling graph data, we propose a unified GCN framework, named TransGCN, to address this task, in which relation and entity embeddings are learned simultaneously. To handle heterogeneous relations in KGs, we introduce a novel way of representing heterogeneous neighborhood by introducing transformation assumptions on the relationship between the subject, the…

Knowledge graph embedding involves learning representations of entities -- the vertices of the graph -- and relations -- the edges of the graph -- such that the resulting representations encode the known factual information represented by the knowledge graph and can be used in the inference of new relations. We show that knowledge graph embedding is naturally expressed in the topological and categorical language of \textit{cellular sheaves}: a knowledge graph embedding can be described as an approximate global section of an appropriate \textit{knowledge sheaf} over the graph, with consistency …

Interference between pharmacological substances can cause serious medical injuries. Correctly predicting so-called drug-drug interactions (DDI) does not only reduce these cases but can also result in a reduction of drug development cost. Presently, most drug-related knowledge is the result of clinical evaluations and post-marketing surveillance; resulting in a limited amount of information. Existing data-driven prediction approaches for DDIs typically rely on a single source of information, while using information from multiple sources would help improve predictions. Ontology-based approaches for predicting gene-disease associations include the more classical semantic similarity methods and more recently knowledge graph embeddings. While semantic similarity is typically restricted to hierarchical relations within the ontology, knowledge graph embeddings consider their full breadth. However, embeddings are produced over a single graph and complex tasks such as gene-disease association may require additional ontologies. We investigate the impact of employing richer semantic representations that are based on more than one ontology, able to represent both gene…
We study the problem of explaining link predictions in the Knowledge Graph Embedding (KGE) models. Learning knowledge graph embedding from an existing knowledge graph is very important to knowledge graph completion. For a fact $(h,r,t)$ with the head entity $h$ having a relation $r$ with the tail entity $t$, the current approaches aim to learn low dimensional representations $(\mathbf{h},\mathbf{r},\mathbf{t})$, each of which corresponds to the elements in $(h, r, t)$, respectively. As $(\mathbf{h},\mathbf{r},\mathbf{t})$ is learned from the existing facts within a knowledge graph, these representations can not be used to detect unknown facts (if the entities or relations never occur in the…

Entity Resolution (ER) is a constitutional part for integrating different knowledge graphs in order to identify entities referring to the same real-world object. A promising approach is the use of graph embeddings for ER in order to determine the similarity of entities based on the similarity of their graph neighborhood. The similarity computations for such embeddings translates to calculating the distance between them in the embedding space which is comparatively simple. However, previous work has shown that the use of graph embeddings alone is not sufficient to achieve high ER quality. We th…

Recent advances in neural networks have solved common graph problems such as link prediction, node classification, node clustering, node recommendation by developing embeddings of entities and relations into vector spaces. Graph embeddings encode the structural information present in a graph. The encoded embeddings then can be used to predict the missing links in a graph. However, obtaining the optimal embeddings for a graph can be a computationally challenging task specially in an embedded system. Knowledge graph completion (a.k.a.~link prediction), i.e.,~the task of inferring missing information from knowledge graphs, is a widely used task in many applications, such as product recommendation and question answering. The state-of-the-art approaches of knowledge graph embeddings and/or rule mining and reasoning are data-driven and, thus, solely based on the information the input knowledge graph contains. This leads to unsatisfactory prediction results which make such solutions inapplicable to crucial domains such as healthcare. To further enhance the accuracy of knowledge graph completion…

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in methods that use distributed (neural) representations to represent and reason about semantic knowledge for robotics applications. However, while robots often observe previously unknown concepts, these representations typically assume that all concepts are known a priori, and incorporating new information requires all concepts to be learned afresh. Our work relaxes this limiting assumption of existing representations and tackles the incremental knowledge graph embedding problem by leveraging the principles of a range of continual learning methods.…
