A scalar field $ϕ$ endowed with a trigonometric potential has been proposed to play the role of Dark Matter. A deep study of the cosmological evolution of linear perturbations, and its comparison to the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) cases (scalar field with quadratic potential), reveals an enhancement in the amplitude of the mass power spectrum for large wave numbers due to the non-linearity of the axion-like potential. For the first time, we study the scale-dependence on physical quantities such as the growth factor $D_k$, the velocity growth factor $f_k$, and $f_k σ_8$. We found that for $z<10$, all these quantities recover the CDM evolution, whereas for high redshift there is a clear distinction between each model (FDM case, and axion-like potential) depending on the wavenumber $k$ and on the decay parameter of the axion-like potential as well. A semi-analytical Halo Mass Function is also revisited, finding a suppression of the number of low mass halos, as in the FDM case, but with a small increment in the amplitude of the variance and halo mass function due to the non-linearity of the axion-like potential. Finally, we present constraints on the axion mass and the axion decay parameter by using data of the Planck Collaboration 2018 and Lyman-$α$ forest.
The evolution of cosmic perturbations in a two-component ultralight axionic universe is investigated. We present the first spectral computation of perturbations in multi-component universes. A particular case composed of light extreme axions and free massive particles offers a possibility for the formation of very high-redshift massive galaxies, which are typically required to host massive early quasars. Our computation retains the information of perturbed velocities for individual axion components, opening a new avenue for setting up initial conditions for future axion dark matter simulations…
Ultralight axions and other bosons are dark matter candidates present in many high energy physics theories beyond the Standard Model. In particular, the string axiverse postulates the existence of up to $\mathcal{O}(100)$ light scalar bosons constituting the dark sector. Considering a mixture of axions and cold dark matter, we obtain upper bounds for the axion relic density $Ω_a h^2 < 0.004$ for axions of mass $10^{-31}\;\mathrm{eV}\leq m_a \leq 10^{-26}\;\mathrm{eV}$ at 95% confidence. We also improve existing constraints by a factor of over 4.5 and 2.1 for axion masses of $10^{-25}$ eV and $…
We consider a nonminimally coupled scalar field as a potential cold dark matter candidate. These models are natural extensions of the ultralight axion models which are based on minimally coupled scalar fields. Such ultralight scalar fields are motivated by string theory and, in particular, have been studied in the context of the axiverse scenario. For a nonminimally coupled field, the scalar-field energy density behaves as radiation at early times, which yields a bound on the coupling constant, $ξ\lesssim 10$, from the primordial nucleosynthesis theory. The first-order perturbations of the non…
The existence of ultralight axion (ULA) with mass $\mathcal{O}( 10^{-26}\text{eV})$ is not favored by the CMB observations in the standard $Λ$CDM model. We show that the inclusion of early dark energy (EDE) will lift the CMB-lockdown on such ULA, and possibly other forms of dark matter beyond cold dark matter. By performing Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis, it is found that, as opposed to $Λ$CDM, the AdS-EDE cosmology (with an Anti-de Sitter phase around recombination) now allows the existence of axion with mass $10^{-26}$ eV and predicts $6\%$ of the matter in our Universe to be such ULA, wh…
A number of proposed and ongoing experiments search for axion dark matter with a mass nearing the limit set by small scale structure (${\cal O} ( 10 ^{ - 21 } {\rm eV} ) $). We consider the late universe cosmology of these models, showing that requiring the axion to have a matter-power spectrum that matches that of cold dark matter constrains the magnitude of the axion couplings to the visible sector. Comparing these limits to current and future experimental efforts, we find that many searches require axions with an abnormally large coupling to Standard Model fields, independently of how the a…
Ultralight axions are theoretically interesting and phenomenologically rich dark sector candidates, but they are difficult to track across cosmological timescales because of their fast oscillations. We resolve this problem by developing a novel method to evolve them efficiently and accurately. We first construct an exact effective fluid which at late times matches the axion but which evolves in a simple way. We then approximate this evolution with a carefully chosen equation of state and sound speed. With our scheme we find that we can obtain subpercent accuracy for the linear theory suppressi…
We examine the cosmological evolution of ultralight axionlike (ULA) scalar fields with potentials of the form $V(ϕ) = m^2 f^2[1 - \cos(ϕ/f)]^n$, with particular emphasis on the deviation in their behavior from the corresponding small$-ϕ$ power-law approximations to these potentials: $V(ϕ) \propto ϕ^{2n}$. We show that in the slow-roll regime, when $\dot ϕ^2/2 \ll V(ϕ)$, the full ULA potentials yield a more interesting range of possibilities for quintessence than do the corresponding power law approximations. For rapidly oscillating scalar fields, we derive the equation of state parameter and o…
We derive oscillating gravitational potential caused by an ultralight axion as the cosmic dark matter, assuming the Compton wavelength smaller than the horizon scale. A new oscillatory term is found which dominates the previously known one on scales larger than the quantum Jeans-scale. In the context of linear perturbations in cosmology this new term might be more relevant in future observation. Both the quantum stress in density perturbation and the quantum oscillation of the gravitational potential are derived in the zero-shear gauge. We show that the axion fluid in relativistic analysis is …

The geodetic and frame-dragging effects are the direct consequences of the spacetime curvature near Earth which can be probed from the Gravity probe B (GP-B) satellite. The satellite result matches quite well with Einstein's general relativistic result. The gyroscope of the satellite which measures the spacetime curvature near Earth contains lots of electrons and nucleons. Ultralight axions, vector gauge bosons, and unparticles can interact with these electrons and nucleons through different spin-dependent and spin-independent operators and change the drift rate of the gyroscope. Some of these…
We present a complete halo model for mixed dark matter composed of cold dark matter (CDM) and ultralight axion-like particles (ULAs). Our model treats ULAs as a biased tracer of CDM, in analogy to treatments of massive neutrinos and neutral hydrogen. The model accounts for clustering of ULAs around CDM host halos, and fully models the cross correlations of both components. The model inputs include the ULA Jeans scale, and soliton density profile. Our model can be used to predict the matter power spectrum, $P(k)$, on non-linear scales for sub-populations of ULAs across the mass range $10^{-33}\…
Ultralight axion-like particles are well-motivated dark matter candidates that are the target of numerous direct detection efforts. In the vicinity of the Solar System, such particles can be treated as oscillating scalar fields. The velocity dispersion of the Milky Way determines a coherence time of about 10^6 oscillations, beyond which the amplitude of the axion field fluctuates stochastically. Any analysis of data from an axion direct detection experiment must carefully account for this stochastic behavior to properly interpret the results. This is especially true for experiments sensitive t…
Gravitational lensing time delays offer an avenue to measure the Hubble parameter $H_0$, with some analyses suggesting a tension with early-type probes of $H_0$. The lensing measurements must mitigate systematic uncertainties due to the mass modelling of lens galaxies. In particular, a core component in the lens density profile would form an approximate local mass sheet degeneracy and could bias $H_0$ in the right direction to solve the lensing tension. We consider ultralight dark matter as a possible mechanism to generate such galactic cores. We show that cores of roughly the required propert…
Ultralight axions (ULAs) are promising dark matter candidates that can have a distinct impact on the formation and evolution of structure on nonlinear scales relative to the cold, collisionless dark matter (CDM) paradigm. However, most studies of structure formation in ULA models do not include the effects of self-interactions, which are expected to arise generically. Here, we study how the tidal evolution of solitons is affected by ULA self-interaction strength and sign. Specifically, using the pseudospectral solver UltraDark.jl, we simulate the tidal disruption of self-interacting solitonic …

Cosmological mechanisms that yield ultralight dark matter are insensitive to the intrinsic parity of a bosonic dark matter candidate, but that same quantity plays a crucial role in a direct detection experiment. The modification of electrodynamics in the presence of ultralight axion-like dark matter is well-known and has been used to realize sensitive probes of such sub-eV mass-scale dark matter, and analogous studies exist for hidden-photon dark matter as well. Here we reframe the modification of electrodynamics for ultralight dark matter of positive intrinsic parity, with a focus on the scal…
