Ultralight axions and other bosons are dark matter candidates present in many high energy physics theories beyond the Standard Model. In particular, the string axiverse postulates the existence of up to $\mathcal{O}(100)$ light scalar bosons constituting the dark sector. Considering a mixture of axions and cold dark matter, we obtain upper bounds for the axion relic density $Ω_a h^2 < 0.004$ for axions of mass $10^{-31}\;\mathrm{eV}\leq m_a \leq 10^{-26}\;\mathrm{eV}$ at 95% confidence. We also improve existing constraints by a factor of over 4.5 and 2.1 for axion masses of $10^{-25}$ eV and $10^{-32}$ eV, respectively. We use the Fourier-space galaxy clustering statistics from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) and demonstrate how galaxy surveys break important degeneracies in the axion parameter space compared to the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We test the validity of the effective field theory of large-scale structure approach to mixed ultralight axion dark matter by making our own mock galaxy catalogs and find an anisotropic ultralight axion signature in the galaxy quadrupole. We also observe an enhancement of the linear galaxy bias from 1.8 to 2.4 when allowing for 5% of the dark matter to be composed of a $10^{-28}$ eV axion in our simulations. Finally, we develop an augmented interpolation scheme allowing a fast computation of the axion contribution to the linear matter power spectrum leading to a 70% reduction of the computational cost for the full Monte Carlo Markov chains analysis.
The evolution of cosmic perturbations in a two-component ultralight axionic universe is investigated. We present the first spectral computation of perturbations in multi-component universes. A particular case composed of light extreme axions and free massive particles offers a possibility for the formation of very high-redshift massive galaxies, which are typically required to host massive early quasars. Our computation retains the information of perturbed velocities for individual axion components, opening a new avenue for setting up initial conditions for future axion dark matter simulations…
We study cosmological structure formation with ultralight axion dark matter, or "fuzzy dark matter (FDM), using a particle-mesh scheme to account for the quantum pressure arising in the Madelung formulation of the Schrödinger-Poisson equations. Subpercent-level energy conservation and correct linear behavior are demonstrated. Whereas the code gives rise to the same core-halo profiles as direct simulations of the Schrödinger equation, it does not reproduce the detailed interference patterns. In cosmological simulations with FDM initial conditions, we find a maximum relative difference of O($10\…
We consider a nonminimally coupled scalar field as a potential cold dark matter candidate. These models are natural extensions of the ultralight axion models which are based on minimally coupled scalar fields. Such ultralight scalar fields are motivated by string theory and, in particular, have been studied in the context of the axiverse scenario. For a nonminimally coupled field, the scalar-field energy density behaves as radiation at early times, which yields a bound on the coupling constant, $ξ\lesssim 10$, from the primordial nucleosynthesis theory. The first-order perturbations of the non…
The ultralight axion with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV is known as a candidate of dark matter. A peculiar feature of the ultralight axion is oscillating pressure in time, which produces oscillation of gravitational potentials. Since the solar system moves through the dark matter halo at the velocity of about $v \sim 300 \, \text{km} / \text{s} = 10^{-3}$, there exists axion wind, which looks like scalar gravitational waves for us. Hence, there is a chance to detect ultralight axion dark matter with a wide mass range by using laser interferometer detectors. We calculate the detector signal induced…
Motivated by tension between the predictions of ordinary cold dark matter (CDM) and observations at galactic scales, ultralight axionlike particles (ULALPs) with mass of the order $10^{-22}~{\rm eV}$ have been proposed as an alternative CDM candidate. We consider cold and collisionless ULALPs produced in the early Universe by the vacuum realignment mechanism and constituting most of CDM. The ULALP fluid is commonly described by classical field equations. However, we show that, like QCD axions, the ULALPs thermalize by gravitational self-interactions and form a Bose-Einstein condensate, a quant…
A scalar field $ϕ$ endowed with a trigonometric potential has been proposed to play the role of Dark Matter. A deep study of the cosmological evolution of linear perturbations, and its comparison to the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) and Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) cases (scalar field with quadratic potential), reveals an enhancement in the amplitude of the mass power spectrum for large wave numbers due to the non-linearity of the axion-like potential. For the first time, we study the scale-dependence on physical quantities such as the growth factor $D_k$, the velocity growth factor $f_k$, and $f_k σ_8$. …
We study the ultralight axion dark matter with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV in $f(R)$ gravity which might resolve the dark energy problem. In particular, we focus on the fact that the pressure of the axion field oscillating in time produces oscillations of gravitational potentials. We show that the oscillation of the gravitational potential is sensitive to the model of gravity. Remarkably, we find that the detectability of the oscillation through the gravitational wave detectors can be significantly enhanced due to the nonlinear resonance between the ultralight axion and the scalaron.
Dynamical mechanisms to generate an ultralight axion of mass $\sim 10^{-21}-10^{-22}$ eV in supergravity and strings are discussed. An ultralight particle of this mass provides a candidate for dark matter that may play a role for cosmology at scales $10\, {\rm kpc}$ or less. An effective operator approach for the axion mass provides a general framework for models of ultralight axions, and in one case recovers the scale $10^{-21}-10^{-22}$ eV as the electroweak scale times the square of the hierarchy with an $O(1)$ Wilson coefficient. We discuss several classes of models realizing this framewor…
The existence of ultralight axion (ULA) with mass $\mathcal{O}( 10^{-26}\text{eV})$ is not favored by the CMB observations in the standard $Λ$CDM model. We show that the inclusion of early dark energy (EDE) will lift the CMB-lockdown on such ULA, and possibly other forms of dark matter beyond cold dark matter. By performing Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis, it is found that, as opposed to $Λ$CDM, the AdS-EDE cosmology (with an Anti-de Sitter phase around recombination) now allows the existence of axion with mass $10^{-26}$ eV and predicts $6\%$ of the matter in our Universe to be such ULA, wh…
Nonlinearities in a realistic axion field potential may play an important role in the cosmological dynamics. In this paper we use the Boltzmann code CLASS to solve the background and linear perturbations evolution of an axion field and contrast our results with those of CDM and the free axion case. We conclude that there is a slight delay in the onset of the axion field oscillations when nonlinearities in the axion potential are taken into account. Besides, we identify a tachyonic instability of linear modes resulting in the presence of a bump in the power spectrum at small scales. Some commen…
A number of proposed and ongoing experiments search for axion dark matter with a mass nearing the limit set by small scale structure (${\cal O} ( 10 ^{ - 21 } {\rm eV} ) $). We consider the late universe cosmology of these models, showing that requiring the axion to have a matter-power spectrum that matches that of cold dark matter constrains the magnitude of the axion couplings to the visible sector. Comparing these limits to current and future experimental efforts, we find that many searches require axions with an abnormally large coupling to Standard Model fields, independently of how the a…
Many models of high energy physics suggest that the cosmological dark sector consists of not just one, but a spectrum of ultralight scalar particles with logarithmically distributed masses. To study the potential signatures of low concentrations of ultralight axion (also known as fuzzy) dark matter, we modify Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) by distinguishing between trajectories of different dark matter species. We further adapt LPT to include the effects of a quantum pressure, which is necessary to generate correct initial conditions for ultralight axion simulations. Based on LPT, our mo…
Ultralight axions are theoretically interesting and phenomenologically rich dark sector candidates, but they are difficult to track across cosmological timescales because of their fast oscillations. We resolve this problem by developing a novel method to evolve them efficiently and accurately. We first construct an exact effective fluid which at late times matches the axion but which evolves in a simple way. We then approximate this evolution with a carefully chosen equation of state and sound speed. With our scheme we find that we can obtain subpercent accuracy for the linear theory suppressi…
We derive oscillating gravitational potential caused by an ultralight axion as the cosmic dark matter, assuming the Compton wavelength smaller than the horizon scale. A new oscillatory term is found which dominates the previously known one on scales larger than the quantum Jeans-scale. In the context of linear perturbations in cosmology this new term might be more relevant in future observation. Both the quantum stress in density perturbation and the quantum oscillation of the gravitational potential are derived in the zero-shear gauge. We show that the axion fluid in relativistic analysis is …

An ultralight axion around $10^{-23}$ eV is known as a viable dark matter candidate. A distinguished feature of such a dark matter is the oscillating pressure which produces the oscillation of the gravitational potential with frequency in the nano-Hz range. Recently, Khmelnitsky and Rubakov pointed out that this time dependent potential induces the pulse arrival residual and could be observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) experiment. In this paper, we study the detectability of the oscillating pressure of the axion in the framework of $f(R)$ theory, and show that the amplitude of the gra…
Axion particles can form macroscopic condensates, whose size can be galactic in scale for models with very small axion masses $m\sim10^{-22}$ eV, and which are sometimes referred to under the name of Fuzzy Dark Matter. Many analyses of these condensates are done in the non-interacting limit, due to the weakness of the self-interaction coupling of axions. We investigate here how certain results change upon inclusion of these interactions, finding a decreased maximum mass and a modified mass-radius relationship. Further, these condensates are, in general, unstable to decay through number-changin…
The geodetic and frame-dragging effects are the direct consequences of the spacetime curvature near Earth which can be probed from the Gravity probe B (GP-B) satellite. The satellite result matches quite well with Einstein's general relativistic result. The gyroscope of the satellite which measures the spacetime curvature near Earth contains lots of electrons and nucleons. Ultralight axions, vector gauge bosons, and unparticles can interact with these electrons and nucleons through different spin-dependent and spin-independent operators and change the drift rate of the gyroscope. Some of these…
We present a complete halo model for mixed dark matter composed of cold dark matter (CDM) and ultralight axion-like particles (ULAs). Our model treats ULAs as a biased tracer of CDM, in analogy to treatments of massive neutrinos and neutral hydrogen. The model accounts for clustering of ULAs around CDM host halos, and fully models the cross correlations of both components. The model inputs include the ULA Jeans scale, and soliton density profile. Our model can be used to predict the matter power spectrum, $P(k)$, on non-linear scales for sub-populations of ULAs across the mass range $10^{-33}\…
Ultralight axion-like particles are well-motivated dark matter candidates that are the target of numerous direct detection efforts. In the vicinity of the Solar System, such particles can be treated as oscillating scalar fields. The velocity dispersion of the Milky Way determines a coherence time of about 10^6 oscillations, beyond which the amplitude of the axion field fluctuates stochastically. Any analysis of data from an axion direct detection experiment must carefully account for this stochastic behavior to properly interpret the results. This is especially true for experiments sensitive t…
If ultralight $(\ll$ eV), bosonic dark matter couples to right handed neutrinos, active neutrino masses and mixing angles depend on the ambient dark matter density. When the neutrino Majorana mass, induced by the dark matter background, is small compared to the Dirac mass, neutrinos are "pseudo-Dirac" fermions that undergo oscillations between nearly degenerate active and sterile states. We present a complete cosmological history for such a scenario and find severe limits from a variety of terrestrial and cosmological observables. For scalar masses in the "fuzzy" dark matter regime ($\sim 10^{…
In the context of structure formation with ultralight axion dark matter, we offer an alternative explanation for the mass relation of solitonic cores and their host halos observed in numerical simulations. Our argument is based entirely on the mass gain that occurs during major mergers of binary cores and largely independent of the initial core-halo mass relation assigned to hosts that have just collapsed. We find a relation between the halo mass $M_h$ and corresponding core mass $M_c$, $M_c\propto M_h^{2β-1}$, where $(1-β)$ is the core mass loss fraction. Following the evolution of core masse…
Gravitational lensing time delays offer an avenue to measure the Hubble parameter $H_0$, with some analyses suggesting a tension with early-type probes of $H_0$. The lensing measurements must mitigate systematic uncertainties due to the mass modelling of lens galaxies. In particular, a core component in the lens density profile would form an approximate local mass sheet degeneracy and could bias $H_0$ in the right direction to solve the lensing tension. We consider ultralight dark matter as a possible mechanism to generate such galactic cores. We show that cores of roughly the required propert…
Ultralight axions (ULAs) are promising dark matter candidates that can have a distinct impact on the formation and evolution of structure on nonlinear scales relative to the cold, collisionless dark matter (CDM) paradigm. However, most studies of structure formation in ULA models do not include the effects of self-interactions, which are expected to arise generically. Here, we study how the tidal evolution of solitons is affected by ULA self-interaction strength and sign. Specifically, using the pseudospectral solver UltraDark.jl, we simulate the tidal disruption of self-interacting solitonic …

Axion-like fields are naturally generated by a mechanism of anomaly cancellation of one or more anomalous gauge abelian symmetries at the Planck scale, emerging as duals of a two-form from the massless bosonic sector of string theory. This suggests an analogy of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation, at field theory level, which results in one or more Stueckelberg pseudoscalars. In the case of a single Stueckelberg pseudoscalar $b$, vacuum misalignments at phase transitions in the early Universe at the GUT scale provide a small mass - due to instanton suppression of the periodic …
Axion is one of the most popular candidates of the cosmological dark matter. Recent studies considering the misalignment production of axions suggest some benchmark axion mass ranges near $m_a \sim 20$ $μ$eV. For such axion mass, the spontaneous decay of axions can give photons in radio band frequency $ν\sim 1-3$ GHz, which can be detected by radio telescopes. In this article, we show that using radio data of galaxy clusters would be excellent to constrain axion dark matter. Specifically, by using radio data of the Bullet cluster (1E 0657-55.8), we find that the upper limit of the axion-photon…
It has been suggested that the internal dynamics of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) can be used to test whether or not ultralight axions with $m_a\sim 10^{-22}\text{eV}$ are a preferred dark matter candidate. However, comparisons to theoretical predictions tend to be inconclusive for the simple reason that while most cosmological models consider only dark matter, one observes only baryons. Here we use realistic kinematic mock data catalogs of Milky Way dSph's to show that the "mass-anisotropy degeneracy" in the Jeans equations leads to biased bounds on the axion mass in galaxies with unknown…
Ultralight-axion (ULA) dark matter is one of the possible solutions to resolve small-scale problems, especially the core-cusp problem. This is because ULA dark matter can create a central soliton core in all dark matter haloes stemmed from the quantum pressure against gravity below the de Broglie wavelength, which becomes manifest on astrophysical scales with axion mass range $\sim10^{-22}$ eV. In this work, we apply our non-spherical dynamical models to the kinematic data of eight classical dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) to obtain more reliable and realistic limits on ULA particle mass. This is mo…
Cosmological mechanisms that yield ultralight dark matter are insensitive to the intrinsic parity of a bosonic dark matter candidate, but that same quantity plays a crucial role in a direct detection experiment. The modification of electrodynamics in the presence of ultralight axion-like dark matter is well-known and has been used to realize sensitive probes of such sub-eV mass-scale dark matter, and analogous studies exist for hidden-photon dark matter as well. Here we reframe the modification of electrodynamics for ultralight dark matter of positive intrinsic parity, with a focus on the scal…
Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) are exceptionally sensitive detectors in the frequency band $\text{nHz} \lesssim f \lesssim μ\text{Hz}$. Ultralight dark matter (ULDM), with mass in the range $10^{-23}\,\text{eV} \lesssim m_ϕ\lesssim 10^{-20}\,\text{eV}$, is one class of DM models known to generate signals in this frequency window. While purely gravitational signatures of ULDM have been studied previously, in this work we consider two signals in PTAs which arise in presence of direct couplings between ULDM and ordinary matter. These couplings induce variations in fundamental constants, i.e., partic…
The highly populated, low-energy excitations of a scalar field of mass $m_a\sim 10^{-22}\,\textrm{eV}$ can represent the full dark matter content of the universe and alleviate some tensions in the standard cosmological scenario on small-scales. This {\it fuzzy dark matter} component is commonly assumed to arise as the consequence of a new axion-like particle in the matter sector, yet for simplicity it is usually modeled in terms of a simple free quadratic field. In this paper we consider how the cosmological constraints are modified when the effects of an instanton potential and temperature-de…
Ultralight scalar dark matter with mass at or below the eV scale and pressure from repulsive self-interaction could form a Bose-Einstein condensate in the early Universe and maybe in galaxies as well. It has been suggested to be a possible solution to the cusp/core problem or even to explain MOND phenomenology. In this paper, I initiate a study of possible self-interactions of ultralight scalar dark matter from the particle physics point of view. To protect its mass, the scalar dark matter is identified as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB). Quite a few pNGB models with different potentials…
