The superpotential in four-dimensional heterotic effective theories contains terms arising from holomorphic Chern-Simons invariants associated to the gauge and tangent bundles of the compactification geometry. These effects are crucial for a number of key features of the theory, including vacuum stability and moduli stabilization. Despite their importance, few tools exist in the literature to compute such effects in a given heterotic vacuum. In this work we present new techniques to explicitly determine holomorphic Chern-Simons invariants in heterotic string compactifications. The key technical ingredient in our computations are real bundle morphisms between the gauge and tangent bundles. We find that there are large classes of examples, beyond the standard embedding, where the Chern-Simons superpotential vanishes. We also provide explicit examples for non-flat bundles where it is non-vanishing and fractionally quantized, generalizing previous results for Wilson lines.
A formalism for calculating the open supermembrane contribution to the non-perturbative superpotential of moduli in heterotic M-theory is presented. This is explicitly applied to the Calabi-Yau (1,1)-moduli and the separation modulus of the end-of-the-world BPS three-branes, whose non-perturbative superpotential is computed. The role of gauge bundles on the boundaries of the open supermembranes is discussed in detail, and a topological criterion presented for the associated superpotential to be non-vanishing.
The open supermembrane contribution to the non-perturbative superpotential of bulk space five-branes in heterotic M-theory is presented. We explicitly compute the superpotential for the modulus associated with the separation of a bulk five-brane from an end-of-the-world three-brane. The gauge and kappa-invariant boundary strings of such open supermembranes are given and the role of the holomorphic vector bundle on the orbifold fixed plane boundary is discussed in detail.
The aim of this talk is to derive two constraints imposed by supersymmetry for a class of heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models with nonholomorphic superpotentials. One of these constraints relates the nonholomorphic parameters of the superpotential to the Hermitian curvature. Various special cases of this constraint have been used to establish properties of Mathai-Quillen form analogues which arise in the corresponding heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models. The other constraint was not anticipated from studies of Mathai-Quillen form analogues.
We study the superpotential for the heterotic string compactified on non-Kahler complex manifolds. We show that many of the geometrical properties of these manifolds can be understood from the proposed superpotential. In particular we give an estimate of the radial modulus of these manifolds. We also show, how the torsional constraints can be obtained from this superpotential.
We present models of heterotic compactification on Calabi-Yau threefolds and compute the non-perturbative superpotential for vector bundle moduli. The key feature of these models is that the threefolds, which are elliptically fibered over del Pezzo surfaces, have homology classes with a unique holomorphic, isolated genus-zero curve. Using the spectral cover construction, we present vector bundles for which we can explicitly calculate the Pfaffians associated with string instantons on these curves. These are shown to be non-zero, thus leading to a non-vanishing superpotential in the 4D effectiv…
Under heterotic/F-theory duality it was argued that a wide class of heterotic five-branes is mapped into the geometry of an F-theory compactification manifold. In four-dimensional compactifications this identifies a five-brane wrapped on a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a specific F-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold containing the blow-up of the five-brane curve. We argue that this duality can be reformulated by first constructing a non-Calabi-Yau heterotic threefold by blowing up the curve of the five-brane into a divisor with five-brane flux. Employing hetero…
To understand in detail the contribution of a world-sheet instanton to the superpotential in a heterotic string compactification, one has to understand the moduli dependence (bundle and complex structure moduli) of the one-loop determinants from the fluctuations, which accompany the classical exponential contribution (involving Kähler moduli) when evaluating the world-volume partition function. Here we use techniques to describe geometrically these Pfaffians for spectral bundles over rational base curves in elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds, and provide a (partially exhaustive) list o…
We consider N =1 compactifications to four dimensions of heterotic string theory in the presence of fluxes. We show that up to order O(α'^2) the associated action can be written as a sum of squares of BPS-like quantities. In this way we prove that the equations of motion are solved by backgrounds which fulfill the supersymmetry conditions and the Bianchi identities. We also argue for the expression of the related superpotential and discuss the radial modulus stabilization for a class of examples.
We compare the N=1 F-theory compactification of Donagi, Grassi and Witten with modular superpotential - and some closely related models - to dual heterotic models. We read of the F-theory spectrum from the cohomology of the fourfold and discuss on the heterotic side the gauge bundle moduli sector (including the spectral surface) and the necessary fivebranes. Then we consider the N=1 superpotential and show how a heterotic superpotential matching the F-theory computation is built up by worldsheet instantons. Finally we discuss how the original modular superpotential should be corrected by an ad…
An explicit orbifold example of the non-zero correlation functions related to the additional contribution to the induced mass term for Higgs particles at low energies is given. We verify that they form finite dimensional representations of the target space modular transformation $SL_2(Z)$. This action of the modular group is shown to be consistent with its action on the fixed points set defining the twisted fields.
We study the non-perturbative superpotential in E_8 x E_8 heterotic string theory on a non-simply connected Calabi-Yau manifold X, as well as on its simply connected covering space \tilde{X}. The superpotential is induced by the string wrapping holomorphic, isolated, genus 0 curves. According to the residue theorem of Beasley and Witten, the non-perturbative superpotential must vanish in a large class of heterotic vacua because the contributions from curves in the same homology class cancel each other. We point out, however, that in certain cases the curves treated in the residue theorem as ly…
We derive the most general flux-induced superpotential for N=1 M-theory compactifications on seven-dimensional manifolds with SU(3) structure. Imposing the appropriate boundary conditions, this result applies for heterotic M-theory. It is crucial for the latter to consider SU(3) and not G_2 group structure on the seven-dimensional internal space. For a particular background that differs from CY(3) x S^1/Z_2 only by warp factors, we investigate the flux-generated scalar potential as a function of the orbifold length. We find a positive cosmological constant minimum, however at an undesirably la…
We review the duality between heterotic and F--theory string vacua with N=1 space-time supersymmetry in eight, six and four dimensions. In particular, we discuss two chains of four-dimensional F--theory/heterotic dual string pairs, where F--theory is compactified on certain elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds, and the dual heterotic vacua are given by compactifications on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds plus the specification of the $E_8\times E_8$ gauge bundles. We show that the massless spectra of the dual pairs agree by using, for one chain of models, an index formula to count the heterotic bundle…
We study Pfaffians that appear in non-perturbative superpotential terms arising from worldsheet instantons in heterotic theories. A result by Beasley and Witten shows that these instanton contributions cancel among curves within a given homology class for Calabi-Yau manifolds that can be described as hypersurfaces or complete intersections in projective or toric ambient spaces. We provide a prescription that identifies all $\mathbb{P}^1$ curves in certain homology classes of complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds in products of projective spaces (CICYs) and cross-check our results by a com…
We consider non-perturbative superpotentials from world-sheet instantons wrapped on holomorphic genus zero curves in heterotic string theory. These superpotential contributions feature prominently in moduli stabilization and large field axion inflation, which makes their presence or absence, as well as their functional dependence on moduli, an important issue. We develop geometric methods to compute the instanton superpotentials for heterotic string theory with monad and extension bundles. Using our methods, we find a variety of examples with a non-vanishing superpotential. In view of standard…
We study the effective action of the heterotic string compactified on particular half-flat manifolds which arise in the context of mirror symmetry with NS-NS flux. We explicitly derive the superpotential and Kahler potential at lowest order in alpha' by a reduction of the bosonic action. The superpotential contains new terms depending on the Kahler moduli which originate from the intrinsic geometrical flux of the half-flat manifolds. A generalized Gukov formula, valid for all manifolds with SU(3) structure, is derived from the gravitino mass term. For the half-flat manifolds it leads to a supe…
Within the superfield formalism, we study the renormalization group improvement of the effective superpotential for the ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theory, explicitly obtain the improved effective potential and discuss the minima of the effective potential and a problem of mass generation in the theory.
The non-perturbative superpotential can be effectively calculated in $M$-theory compactification to three dimensions on a Calabi-Yau four-fold $X$. For certain $X$, the superpotential is identically zero, while for other $X$, a non-perturbative superpotential is generated. Using $F$-theory, these results carry over to certain Type IIB and heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions with $N=1$ supersymmetry. In the heterotic string case, the non-perturbative superpotential can be interpreted as coming from space-time and world-sheet instantons; in many simple cases contributions come …
We study type IIA string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and heterotic string theory compactified on Calabi-Yau threefolds times a two-torus. We derive the resulting effective theories which have two space-time dimensions and preserve four supercharges. The duality between such vacua is established at the level of the effective theory. For type IIA vacua with non-trivial Ramond-Ramond background fluxes a superpotential is generated. We show that for a specific choice of background fluxes and a fourfold which has the structure of a threefold fibred over a sphere the superpotential c…
We develop a superfield approach to the effective potential in the supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter, and, in Landau gauge, calculate the one-loop Kahlerian effective potential and give some qualitative prescriptions for the two-loop one.
The non-perturbative superpotential generated by a heterotic superstring wrapped once around a genus-zero holomorphic curve is proportional to the Pfaffian involving the determinant of a Dirac operator on this curve. We show that the space of zero modes of this Dirac operator is the kernel of a linear mapping that is dependent on the associated vector bundle moduli. By explicitly computing the determinant of this map, one can deduce whether or not the dimension of the space of zero modes vanishes. It is shown that this information is sufficient to completely determine the Pfaffian and, hence, …
We dimensionally reduce the ten dimensional heterotic action on spacetimes of the form ${\cal M}_{(2,1)}\times Y$, where ${\cal M}_{(2,1)}$ is three dimensional maximally symmetric Anti de Sitter or Minkowski space, and $Y$ is a compact seven dimensional manifold with $G_2$ structure. In doing so, we derive the real superpotential functional of the corresponding three dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ theory. We confirm that extrema of this functional precisely correspond to supersymmetric heterotic compactifications on manifolds of $G_2$ structure. We make some comments on the role of the superpotenti…
We consider finite deformations of the Hull--Strominger system. Starting from the heterotic superpotential, we identify complex coordinates on the off-shell parameter space. Expanding the superpotential around a supersymmetric vacuum leads to a third-order Maurer--Cartan equation that controls the moduli. The resulting complex effective action generalises that of both Kodaira--Spencer and holomorphic Chern--Simons theory. The supersymmetric locus of this action is described by an $L_3$ algebra.
For supersymmetric heterotic string compactifications on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a vector bundle $V$ the world-sheet superpotential $W$ is a sum of contributions from isolated rational curves $\C$ in $X$; the individual contribution is given by an exponential in the Kähler class of the curve times a prefactor given essentially by the Pfaffian which depends on the moduli of $V$ and the complex structure moduli of $X$. Solutions of $DW=0$ (or even of $DW=W=0$) can arise either by nontrivial cancellations between the individual terms in the summation over all contributing curves o…
We study to what extent Wilson lines in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications lead to non-trivial H-flux via Chern-Simons terms. Wilson lines are basic ingredients for Standard Model constructions but their induced H-flux may affect the consistency of the leading order background geometry and of the two-dimensional worldsheet theory. Moreover H-flux in heterotic compactifications would play an important role for moduli stabilization and could strongly constrain the supersymmetry breaking scale. We show how to compute H-flux and the corresponding superpotential, given an explicit complete inte…
We show that fractional flux from Wilson lines can stabilize the moduli of heterotic string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. We observe that the Wilson lines used in GUT symmetry breaking naturally induce a fractional flux. When combined with a hidden-sector gaugino condensate, this generates a potential for the complex structure moduli, Kahler moduli, and dilaton. This potential has a supersymmetric AdS minimum at moderately weak coupling and large volume. Notably, the necessary ingredients for this construction are often present in realistic models. We explore the type IIA dual ph…
In the framework of orbifold compactifications of heterotic and type II orientifolds, we study effective N = 1 supergravity potentials arising from fluxes and gaugino condensates. These string solutions display a broad phenomenology which we analyze using the method of N = 4 supergravity gaugings. We give examples in type II and heterotic compactifications of combined fluxes and condensates leading to vacua with naturally small supersymmetry breaking scale controlled by the condensate, cases where the supersymmetry breaking scale is specified by the fluxes even in the presence of a condensate …
We describe a class of 4d N=1 compactifications of the $SO(32)$ heterotic/type I string theory which are destabilized by nonperturbatively generated superpotentials. In the type I description, the destabilizing superpotential is generated by a one instanton effect or gaugino condensation in a nonperturbative $SU(2)$ gauge group. The dual, heterotic description involves destabilization due to worldsheet instanton or $\it half$ worldsheet instanton effects in the two cases. A genericity argument suggests that a (global) supersymmetry-breaking model of Intriligator and Thomas might be typical in …
We propose a new "Hamiltonian inspired" covariant formula to define (without harmful ambiguities) the superpotential and the physical charges associated to a gauge symmetry. The criterion requires the variation of the Noether current not to contain any derivative terms in $\partial_μδ\f$. The examples of Yang-Mills (in its first order formulation) and 3-dimensional Chern-Simons theories are revisited and the corresponding charge algebras (with their central extensions in the Chern-Simons case) are computed in a straightforward way. We then generalize the previous results to any (2n+1)-dimensio…
In this paper, we study a class of heterotic Landau-Ginzburg models. We show that the action can be written as a sum of BRST-exact and non-exact terms. The non-exact terms involve the pullback of the complexified Kahler form to the worldsheet and terms arising from the superpotential, which is a Grassmann-odd holomorphic function of the superfields. We then demonstrate that the action is invariant on-shell under supersymmetry transformations up to a total derivative. Finally, we extend the analysis to the case in which the superpotential is not holomorphic. In this case, we find that supersymm…
We review our present understanding of heterotic compactifications on non-Kahler complex manifolds with torsion. Most of these manifolds can be obtained by duality chasing a consistent F-theory compactification in the presence of fluxes. We show that the duality map generically leads to non-Kahler spaces on the heterotic side, although under some special conditions we recover Kahler compactifications. The dynamics of the heterotic theory is governed by a new superpotential and minimizing this superpotential reproduces all the torsional constraints. This superpotential also fixes most of the mo…
We formulate a generic three-dimensional superfield higher-derivative gauge theory coupled to the matter, which, in certain cases reduces to the three-dimensional scalar super-QED, or supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons or Chern-Simons theories with matter. For this theory, we explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential.
In this paper we consider Type I string theory compactified on a Z_7 orbifold. The model has N=1 supersymmetry, a U(4) \otimes U(4) \otimes U(4) \otimes SO(8) gauge group, and chiral matter. There are only D9-branes (for which we discuss tadpole cancellation conditions) in this model corresponding to a perturbative heterotic description in a certain region of the moduli space. We construct the heterotic dual, match the perturbative type I and heterotic tree-level massless spectra via giving certain scalars appropriate vevs, and point out the crucial role of the perturbative superpotential (on …
We study the four-dimensional effective theory arising from ten-dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on manifolds with torsion. In particular, given the heterotic superpotential appropriately corrected at $\mathcal{O}(α')$ to account for the Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation mechanism, we investigate properties of four-dimensional Minkowski vacua of this theory. Considering the restrictions arising from F-terms and D-terms we identify the infinitesimal massless moduli space of the theory. We show that it agrees with the results that have recently been obtained from a ten-dimensiona…
We discuss the physics of zero modes of ED3/M5 instantons at strong coupling from three different viewpoints. Motivated by an anomaly inflow argument, we give a prescription for describing neutral instanton modes in terms of string junctions, unifying the language with that used for charged modes. We proceed to discuss the physics of charged modes as we move between different points in the moduli space of F-theory compactified on K3. In particular, we show how, in going from the E6^3 point to the SO(8)^4 point, the structure of SO(8) zero modes arises from a non-trivial mixing of massless 27's…
We present a method for explicitly computing the non-perturbative superpotentials associated with the vector bundle moduli in heterotic superstrings and M-theory. This method is applicable to any stable, holomorphic vector bundle over an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold. For specificity, the vector bundle moduli superpotential, for a vector bundle with structure group G=SU(3), generated by a heterotic superstring wrapped once over an isolated curve in a Calabi-Yau threefold with base B=F1, is explicitly calculated. Its locus of critical points is discussed. Superpotentials of vector b…
Using the superfield formalism and implementing the canonical noncommutativity, the Kahlerian effective superpotential is evaluated in the three-dimensional noncommutative supersymmetric Chern--Simons-matter model at the two-loop order. The computation of the Kahlerian effective superpotential is enough to determine whether the model can exhibit spontaneous (super) symmetry breaking. It is shown that the model possesses a spontaneous gauge symmetry broken phase, generating masses for the scalar and gauge superfields at the two-loop order. Just as for the commutative version, in the noncommutat…
We investigate the dynamics of space-time filling five-branes wrapped on curves in heterotic and orientifold Calabi-Yau compactifications. We first study the leading N=1 scalar potential on the infinite deformation space of the brane-curve around a supersymmetric configuration. The higher order potential is also determined by a brane superpotential which we compute for a subset of light deformations. We argue that these deformations map to new complex structure deformations of a non-Calabi-Yau manifold which is obtained by blowing up the brane-curve into a four-cycle and by replacing the brane…
We first investigate the attractor solution associated with Assisted Inflation in Heterotic M-Theory to see if it is stable. By perturbing the solutions we find a solitary stable fixed point with the general path through phase space dependent upon the Calabi-Yau data and the number of five-branes. We then go on to examine the effect of including non-perturbative corrections to the inflaton potential arising from boundary-brane instantons as well as higher order brane interaction terms. The result is that Assisted Inflation is only possible if we allow fine tuning of the superpotential, and tha…
In this paper we study the Nielsen identity for the supersymmetric Chern-Simons-matter model in the superfield formalism, in three spacetime dimensions. The Nielsen identity is essential to understand the gauge invariance of the symmetry breaking mechanism, and it is calculated by using the BRST invariance of the model. We discuss the technical difficulties in applying this identity to the complete effective superpotential, but we show how we can study in detail the gauge independence of one part of the effective superpotential, $K_{eff}$. We calculate the renormalization group functions of th…
By studying the previously known holographic N=4 supersymmetric renormalization group flow(Gowdigere-Warner) in four dimensions, we find the mass deformed Chern-Simons matter theory which has N=4 supersymmetry by adding the four mass terms among eight adjoint fields. The geometric superpotential from the eleven dimensions is found and provides the M2-brane probe analysis. As second example, we consider known holographic N=8 supersymmetric renormalization group flow(Pope-Warner) in four dimensions. The eight mass terms are added and similar geometric superpotential is obtained.
In this work, we investigate the consequences of the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE) in the determination of the effective superpotential and the study of Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) in an N = 1 supersymmetric theory including an Abelian Chern-Simons superfield coupled to N scalar superfields in (2+1) dimensional spacetime. The classical Lagrangian presents scale invariance, which is broken by radiative corrections to the effective superpotential. We calculate the effective superpotential up to two-loops by using the RGE and the beta functions and anomalous dimensions known in the l…
We use a D-instanton or physical gauge approach to re-derive the heterotic string worldsheet instanton contribution to the superpotential in Calabi-Yau compactification. We derive an analogous formula for worldsheet instanton corrections to the moduli space metric in heterotic string or Type I compactification on a K3 surface. In addition, we give a global analysis of the phase of the worldsheet path integral of the heterotic string, showing precisely how the B-field must be interpreted.
A major problem in discussing heterotic string models is the stabilisation of the many vector bundle moduli via the superpotential generated by world-sheet instantons. In arXiv:1110.6315 we have discussed the method to make a discrete twist in a large and much discussed class of vector bundles such that the generation number gets new contributions (which can be tuned suitably) and at the same time the space of bundle moduli of the new, twisted bundle is a proper subspace (where the 'new', non-generic twist class exists) of the original bundle moduli space; one thus gets a model, closely relate…
We study the large $N$ phase diagram of an asymptotically free UV completion of $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory coupled to a single massive fundamental scalar multiplet with a quartic superpotential coupling. We compute the effective superpotential at small gauge coupling $λ\equiv N/k$, and combine this with previous results in the literature to obtain the full phase diagram in this regime. We find that tuning the UV parameters allows us to reach various phases and fixed points of Chern-Simons theory that were recently discovered using large $N$ techniques, as well…
All the linear alpha-prime corrections, however excluding the gravitational Chern-Simons correction, are studied in the toroidally compactified critical Heterotic string theory. These corrections are computed to the entropy for a BPS static spherical four dimensional dyonic black hole which represents a wrapped fundamental string carrying arbitrary winding and momentum charges along one cycle in the presence of KK-monopole and H-monopole charges associated to another cycle. It is verified that after the inclusion of the gravitational Chern-Simons corrections [hep-th/0608182], all the linear al…
Nilpotency of the pure spinor BRST operator in a curved background implies superspace equations of motion for the background. By computing one-loop corrections to nilpotency for the heterotic sigma model, the Yang-Mills Chern-Simons corrections to the background are derived.
In this paper we study the spectrum of BPS operators/states in N=2 superconformal U(N) Chern-Simons-matter theories with adjoint chiral matter fields, with and without superpotential. The superconformal indices and conjectures on the full supersymmetric spectrum of the theories in the large N limit with up to two adjoint matter fields are presented. Our results suggest that some of these theories may have supergravity duals at strong coupling, while some others may be dual to higher spin theories of gravity at strong coupling. For the N=2 theory with no superpotential, we study the renormaliza…
We studied the Dynamical Symmetry Breaking (DSB) mechanism in a supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in $\left(2+1\right)$ dimensions coupled to $N$ matter superfields in the superfield formalism. For this purpose, we developed a mechanism to calculate the effective superpotencial $K_{\mathrm{eff}}\left(σ_{\mathrm{cl}},α\right)$, where $σ_{\mathrm{cl}}$ is a background superfield, and $α$ a gauge-fixing parameter that is introduced in the quantization process. The possible dependence of the effective potential on the gauge parameter have been studied in the context of quantum field theory. We de…
We show that certain superpotential and Kahler potential couplings of N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with branes or bundles can be computed from Hodge theory and mirror symmetry. This applies to F-theory on a Calabi-Yau four-fold and three-fold compactifications of type II and heterotic strings with branes. The heterotic case includes a class of bundles on elliptic manifolds constructed by Friedmann, Morgan and Witten. Mirror symmetry of the four-fold computes non-perturbative corrections to mirror symmetry on the three-folds, including D-instanton corrections. We also propose a physical…
A revision of the torodial Kaluza-Klein compactification of the massless sector of the E(8)xE(8) heterotic string is given. Under the solvable Lie algebra gauge the dynamics of the O(p,q)/(O(p)xO(q)) symmetric space sigma model which is coupled to a dilaton, N abelian gauge fields and the Chern-Simons type field strength is studied in a general formalism. The results are used to derive the bosonic matter field equations of the massless sector of the D-dimensional compactified E(8)xE(8) heterotic string.
We study superpotentials from worldsheet instantons in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications for vector bundles constructed from line bundle sums, monads and extensions. Within a certain class of manifolds and for certain second homology classes, we derive simple necessary conditions for a non-vanishing instanton superpotential. These show that non-vanishing instanton superpotentials are rare and require a specific pattern for the bundle construction. For the class of monad and extension bundles with this pattern, we derive a sufficient criterion for non-vanishing instanton superpotentials ba…
We explore the dynamics of three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry and matter in the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group. Realizing the gauge theories of interest in a setup of threebranes and fivebranes in type IIB string theory we argue for a Seiberg duality that relates Chern-Simons theories with non-trivial superpotentials.
We consider D-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with 8 supercharges (D<6,$~\mathcal{N}=8$) in the framework of harmonic superspaces. The effective Abelian low-energy action for D=5 contains the free and Chern-Simons terms. Effective $\mathcal{N}=8$ superfield actions for D<4 can be written in terms of the superpotentials satisfying the superfield constraints and (6-D)-dimensional Laplace equations. The role of alternative harmonic structures is discussed.
These notes provide a detailed account of the universal structure of superpotentials defining a large class of superconformal Chern-Simons theories with matter, many of which appear as the low-energy descriptions of multiple M2-brane configurations. The amount of superconformal symmetry in the Chern-Simons-matter theory determines the minimum amount of global symmetry that the associated quartic superpotential must realise, which in turn restricts the matter superfield representations. Our analysis clarifies the necessary representation-theoretic data which guarantees a particular amount of su…
In this paper we analyze the structure of supersymmetric vacua in compactifications of the heterotic string on certain manifolds with SU(3) structure. We first study the effective theories obtained from compactifications on half-flat manifolds and show that solutions which stabilise the moduli at acceptable values are hard to find. We then derive the effective theories associated with compactification on generalised half-flat manifolds. It is shown that these effective theories are consistent with four-dimensional N=1 supergravity and that the superpotential can be obtained by a Gukov-Vafa-Wit…
Models of interactions of D-dimensional hypermultiplets and supersymmetric gauge multiplets with $\mathcal{N}=8$ supercharges $(D{\leq} 6)$ can be formulated in the framework of harmonic superspaces. The effective Coulomb low-energy action for D=5 includes the free and Chern-Simons terms. We consider also the non-Abelian superfield D=5 Chern-Simons action. The biharmonic $D=3,\mathcal{N}=8$ superspace is introduced for a description of l and r supermultiplets and the mirror symmetry. The D=2,(4,4) gauge theory and hypermultiplet interactions are considered in the triharmonic superspace. Constr…
