Event shape observables have been widely used for precision QCD studies at various lepton and hadron colliders. We present the most accurate calculation of the transverse-energy-energy correlation event shape variable in deep-inelastic scattering. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory the cross section is factorized as the convolution of the hard function, beam function, jet function and soft function in the back-to-back limit. A close connection to TMD factorization is established, as the beam function when combined with part of the soft function is identical to the conventional TMD parton distribution function, and the jet function is the second moment of the TMD fragmentation function matching coefficient. We validate our framework by comparing the obtained LO and NLO leading singular distributions to the full QCD calculations in the back-to-back limit. We report the resummed transverse-energy-energy correlation distributions up to N$^3$LL accuracy matched with the NLO cross section for the production of a lepton and two jets. Our work provides a new way to precisely study TMD physics at the future Electron-Ion Collider.
Partonic Transverse Motion in Unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering Processes
We survey the current phenomenological status of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at moderate hard scales and in the limit of very large transverse momentum. As the transverse momentum becomes comparable to or larger than the overall hard scale, the differential cross sections should be calculable with fixed order pQCD methods, while small transverse momentum (TMD factorization) approximations should eventually break down. We find large disagreement between HERMES and COMPASS data and fixed order calculations done with modern parton densities, even in regions of kinematics where such c…
We present an extraction of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions based on more than two thousands data points from several experiments for two different processes: semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs. The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). For semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, predictions for multiplicities are normalized by factors that…
Proposal for measuring new transverse momentum dependent parton distributions $g_{1T}$ and $h_{1L}^\perp$ through semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering
A survey is given on the new 2- and 3-loop results for the heavy flavor contributions to deep-inelastic scattering in the unpolarized and the polarized case. We also discuss related new mathematical aspects applied in these calculations.
We consider semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan events within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. Based on the simultaneous fit of multiple data points, we extract the unpolarized TMD distributions and the non-perturbative evolution kernel. The high quality of the fit confirms a complete universality of TMD non-perturbative distributions. The extraction is supplemented by phenomenological analyses of various parts of the TMD factorization, such as sensitivity to non-perturbative parameterizations, perturbative orders, collinear distributions, correlati…
Motivated by recently observed tension between $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.
We study the lepton-jet correlation in deep inelastic scattering. We perform one-loop calculations for the spin averaged and transverse spin dependent differential cross sections depending on the total transverse momentum of the final state lepton and the jet. The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism is applied to describe the relevant observables. To show the physics reach of this process, we perform a phenomenological study for HERA kinematics and comment on an ongoing analysis of experimental data. In addition, we highlight the potential of this process to constrain s…
We study the transverse polarization of hyperons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $ep\to eΛ^\uparrow X$, in the framework of the collinear twist-3 factorization. The cross section from the twist-3 distribution functions and the twist-3 quark fragmentation functions is computed in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. The constraint relations among the twist-3 FFs are taken into account to simplify the formula. The formula is relevant to large-$P_T$ hyperon production in the future Electron-Ion-Collider experiment.
In this paper we propose to investigate the transverse single spin asymmetry in the inelastic $J/Ψ$ photoproduction in $p^\uparrow p$ and $p^\uparrow A$ collisions at RHIC energies. At leading order this process probes the gluon Sivers function. We predict large values for the cross sections, which indicates that its experimental analysis is, in principle, feasible. The rapidity dependence of the single spin asymmetry is presented. We obtain that the asymmetry is strongly dependent on the model used for the gluon Sivers function and that it can be probed by the analysis of the $J/Ψ$ production…
