We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for open charm production in the semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering. We calculate the asymmetry in terms of the QCD collinear factorization approach for $D$ mesons at high enough $P_{h\perp}$, and find that the asymmetry is proportional to the twist-three tri-gluon correlation function in the proton. With a simple model for the tri-gluon correlation function, we estimate the asymmetry for both COMPASS and eRHIC kinematics, and discuss the possibilities of extracting the tri-gluon correlation function in these experiments.
Inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic leptoproduction offers possibilities to study details of the quark and gluon structure of the hadrons involved. In many of these experiments polarization is an essential ingredient. We also emphasize the dependence on transverse momenta of the quarks, which leads to azimuthal asymmetries in the produced hadrons.
The production of slow nucleons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off the deuteron is investigated in the region $x \gsim 0.3$ for kinematical conditions accessible at $HERA$. Within the spectator mechanism the semi-inclusive cross section exhibits a scaling property, which can be used as a model-independent test of the dominance of the spectator mechanism itself, providing in this way an interesting tool to investigate the neutron structure function. The possibility of extracting model-independent information on the neutron to proton structure function ratio from semi-inclu…
Motivated by recently observed tension between $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ calculations of very large transverse momentum dependence in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan scattering, we repeat the details of the calculation through $O\left(α_s^2\right)$ transversely differential cross section. The results confirm earlier calculations, and provide further support to the observation that tension exists with current parton distribution and fragmentation functions.
The production of slow nucleons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off the deuteron is investigated in the region $x \gsim 0.3$. It is shown that within the spectator mechanism the semi-inclusive cross section exhibits a scaling property even at moderate values of $Q^2$ ($\sim$ few $(GeV/c)^2$) accessible at present facilities, like $CEBAF$. Such a scaling property can be used as a model-independent test of the dominance of the spectator mechanism itself and provides an interesting tool to investigate the neutron structure function. The possibility of extracting model-indepen…
We calculate the multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We show that the quantum interference of multiple scattering amplitudes leads to suppression in hadron productions. At the leading power in medium length, the suppression can be approximately expressed in terms of a shift in $z$ of the fragmentation function $D(z)$, and could be therefore interpreted as the collisional energy loss. We compare our calculation with existing experimental data. We also discuss the effect of quark mass on the suppression. Our approac…
We study the transverse polarization of hyperons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, $ep\to eΛ^\uparrow X$, in the framework of the collinear twist-3 factorization. The cross section from the twist-3 distribution functions and the twist-3 quark fragmentation functions is computed in the leading order with respect to the QCD coupling constant. The constraint relations among the twist-3 FFs are taken into account to simplify the formula. The formula is relevant to large-$P_T$ hyperon production in the future Electron-Ion-Collider experiment.
Semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton scattering off few-nucleon systems is investigated assuming that virtual boson absorption occurs on a hadronic cluster which can be either a two-nucleon correlated pair or a six-quark bag. In both cases the relevance of nuclear effects on forward and backward nucleon emissions is illustrated and the differences expected in the energy distribution of the emitted nucleons are analyzed both at x>1 and x<1.
It is shown that in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of electrons off a complex nucleus A, the detection, in coincidence with the scattered electron, of a nucleus (A-1) in the ground state, as well as of a nucleon and a nucleus (A-2), also in the ground state, may provide unique information on several long standing problems, such as : i) the nature and the relevance of the final state interaction in DIS; ii) validity of the spectator mechanism in DIS; iii) the medium induced modifications of the nucleon structure function; iv) the origin of the EMC effect.
We propose new method which allows determination of the strange-sea quark spin distribution in the nucleon through measurement of various inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic electron- or muon-proton reactions. It is shown, that using combinations of inclusive data and semi-inclusive data containing neutral pions in the final state, it is possible to extract the strange-sea quark spin distribution. Similar result can be obtained for charged pions and some other hadrons also.
We investigate the possibility of identifying an explicit pionic component of the nucleon through measurements of polarized $Δ^{++}$ baryon fragments produced in deep-inelastic leptoproduction off polarized protons, which may help to identify the physical mechanism responsible for the breaking of the Gottfried sum rule. The pion-exchange model predicts highly correlated polarizations of the $Δ^{++}$ and target proton, in marked contrast with the competing diquark fragmentation process. Measurement of asymmetries in polarized $Λ$ production may also reveal the presence of a kaon cloud in the nu…
Recent measurements of inclusive deep inelastic scattering differential cross-section in the range 1.5 \gev2\le Q^2\le 30000 \gev2 and 5\cdot 10^{-6}\le x\le 0.65 are presented. Phenomenological analyses performed from these measurements are also described.
We revisit high energy factorization for gluon mediated inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) for which we propose a new semi-classical approach that accounts systematically for the longitudinal extent of the target in contrast with the shockwave limit. In this framework, based on a partial twist expansion, we derive a factorization formula that involves a new gauge invariant unintegrated gluon distribution which depends explicitly on the Feynman $x$ variable. It is shown that both the Regge and Bjorken limits are recovered in this approach. We reproduce in particular the full one loop inc…
The non-valence spin-flavor structure of the nucleon extracted from semi-inclusive measurements of polarized deep inelastic scattering depends strongly on the transverse momentum of the detected hadrons which are used to determine the individual polarized sea distributions. This physics may explain the recent HERMES observation of a positively polarized strange sea through semi-inclusive scattering, in contrast to the negative strange sea polarization deduced from inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering.
The spin-dependent cross sections for semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon scattering are derived in the framework of collinear factorization, including the effects of masses of the target and produced hadron at finite momentum transfer squared Q^2. At leading order the cross sections factorize into products of parton distribution and fragmentation functions evaluated in terms of new, mass-dependent scaling variables. The size of the hadron mass corrections is estimated at kinematics relevant for future semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering experiments.
Multiple scattering leads to transverse momentum broadening of the struck quark in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scatterings (SIDIS). Nuclear broadening of the transverse momentum squared at the leading twist is determined by the twist-four collinear quark-gluon correlation function of the target nucleus that is in turn related to the jet transport parameter inside the nuclear medium. The twist-six contributions to the transverse momentum broadening are calculated as power corrections $\sim 1/Q^2$. Such power corrections are found to have no extra nuclear enhancement beyond the twist-four ma…
Within the framework of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics we derive transverse momentum dependent distributions describing both current and target fragmentation in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering. We present, to leading logarithmic accuracy, the corresponding crosssections describing final state hadrons on the whole phase space. Phenomenological implications and further developments are briefly discussed.
We calculate the target normal single-spin asymmetry caused by two-photon exchange in inclusive electron-nucleon scattering in the resonance region. Our analysis uses the $1/N_c$ expansion of low-energy QCD and combines $N$ and $Δ$ intermediate and final states using the contracted $SU(4)$ spin-flavor symmetry. The normal spin asymmetry obtained in leading-order accuracy in $1/N_c$ has magnitude $\sim 10^{-2}$ and different sign in $ep$ and $en$ scattering. It can be measured in electron scattering at lab energies $\sim$ 0.5-1.5 GeV and provides a clean probe of two-photon exchange dynamics.
We construct a language for identifying kinematical regions of transversely differential semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections with particular underlying partonic pictures, especially in regions of moderate to low $Q$ where sensitivity to kinematical effects outside the usual very high energy limit becomes non-trivial. The partonic pictures map to power law expansions whose leading contributions ultimately lead to well-known QCD factorization theorems. We propose methods for estimating the consistency of any particular region of overall hadronic kinematics with the kinematics…
Cut vertices, a generalization of matrix elements of local operators, are revisited, and an expansion in terms of minimally subtracted cut vertices is formulated. An extension of the formalism to deal with semi-inclusive deep inelastic processes in the target fragmentation region is explicitly constructed. The problem of factorization is discussed in detail.
We present an extraction of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions based on more than two thousands data points from several experiments for two different processes: semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs. The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). For semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, predictions for multiplicities are normalized by factors that…
We explore the role of final-state interactions (FSI) in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from the deuteron. Relating the inclusive cross section to the deuteron forward virtual Compton scattering amplitude, a general formula for the FSI contribution is derived in the generalized eikonal approximation, utilizing the diffractive nature of the effective hadron-nucleon interaction. The calculation uses a factorized model with a basis of three resonances with mass $W<2$ GeV and a continuum contribution for larger $W$ as the relevant set of effective hadron states entering the final-state intera…
Within a perturbative approach to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), we show how to extend ordinary DGLAP longitudinal evolution equations to include the radiative transverse momentum generated in the collinear branching regime. Considering Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering as a reference process, we perform such a generalization both in the current and in the target fragmentation region. These distributions are then used to predict semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering cross-sections onto the whole phase space of the detected hadron.
By considering the $x$-dependence of $π^+$, $π^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$, $Λ$, $\barΛ$, $p$, $\bar{p}$ hadron productions in charged lepton semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off nuclear target (using Fe as an example) and deuteron D target, % at $Q^2=5$ GeV$^2$, we find that $(\barΛ^A/Λ^A)/(\barΛ^D/Λ^D)$ and $({\bar{p}}^A/{p}^A)/({\bar{p}}^A/p^A)$ are ideal to figure out the nuclear sea content, which is predicted to be different by different models accounting for the nuclear EMC effect.
We derive mass corrections for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons from nucleons using a collinear factorization framework which incorporates the initial state mass of the target nucleon and the final state mass of the produced hadron. The formalism is constructed specifically to ensure that physical kinematic thresholds for the semi-inclusive process are explicitly respected. A systematic study of the kinematic dependencies of the mass corrections to semi-inclusive cross sections reveals that these are even larger than for inclusive structure functions, especially at very smal…
We present a method for extraction of detailed information on polarized quark densities from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering l+N -> l+h+X, in both LO and NLO QCD without any assumptions about fragmentation functions and polarized sea densities. The only symmetries utilised are charge conjugation and isotopic spin invariance of strong interactions.
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. The result is used for making predictions for the Sivers effect in the Drell-Yan process.
We explore the effects of the resummation of large logarithmic perturbative corrections to double-longitudinal spin asymmetries for inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering in fixed-target experiments. We find that the asymmetries are overall rather robust with respect to the inclusion of the resummed higher-order terms. Significant effects are observed at fairly high values of x, where resummation tends to decrease the spin asymmetries. This effect turns out to be more pronounced for semi-inclusive scattering. We also investigate the potential impact of resummation on the extrac…
The measurements of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in deep-inelastic scattering $ep$ collisions at HERA are compared with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics from the CTEQ and MRST fitting groups, employing a range of theoretical schemes. The differences in the theoretical predictions are discussed and the theoretical uncertainties investigated.
New polarized fragmentation functions are introduced and justified, in addition to those conventional ones assumed to be independent of the helicity of the parent parton. It is demonstrated that due to our present ignorance concerning these new parton-spin dependent leading-twist fragmentation functions, it is impossible to utilize current experiments on spin-dependent semi-inclusive deep inelastic lepton nucleon scattering to disentangle the separate polarized parton distributions.
Miraculously, target mass corrections for inclusive deep inelastic scattering can be calculated exactly. On the contrary, there does not exist a consistent derivation of kinematic hadron mass corrections for semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). Recently this has become of topical interest, since there is a significant difference between the measured HERMES and COMPASS pion and kaon multiplicities, which cannot be explained as a consequence of evolution in $Q^2$, and it has been suggested that the difference can be understood if kinematic hadron mass corrections are taken into acco…
The contribution of lepton and photon pair production in ep-scattering to the cross section of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering ep-> e'p'X has been calculated. The numerical results showed a large contribution of this processes at $ϕ_h=180^o$, in a good agreement with preliminary experimental data.
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process is considered. A theoretical procedure is proposed allowing the direct extraction from the SIDIS data of the first moments of the polarized valence distributions and of the first moment difference of the light sea quark polarized distributions in the next to leading QCD order. The validity of the procedure is confirmed by the respective simulations.
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a nucleus A with detection of a slow nucleus (A-1) in the ground or low excitation states, i.e. the process A(e,e'(A-1))X, can provide useful information on the origin of the EMC effect and the mechanisms of hadronization. The theoretical description of the process is reviewed and the results of several calculations on few-body systems and complex nuclei are presented.
Following recent progresses in the understanding of high-energy scattering in QCD, we derive the first phenomenological consequences of Pomeron loops, in the context of both inclusive and diffractive deep inelastic scattering. In particular, we discuss diffusive scaling, a new scaling law that emerges for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of $Q^2,$ well above the proton saturation momentum.
In this paper, we discuss the new hard pole contribution to the $P_{h\perp}$-weighted single-transverse spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. We perform the complete next-to-leading order calculation of the $P_{h\perp}$-weighted cross section and show that the new hard pole contribution is required in order to obtain the complete evolution equation for the Qiu-Sterman function derived by different approaches.
We demonstrate a factorization formula for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with hadrons in the current fragmentation region detected at low transverse momentum. To facilitate the factorization, we introduce the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions and fragmentation functions with gauge links slightly off the light-cone, and with soft-gluon radiations subtracted. We verify the factorization to one-loop order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and argue that it is valid to all orders in perturbation theory.
The analysis of semi-inclusive data from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons off polarized protons and deuterons by the SMC is presented. The resulting charged hadron asymmetries are used to determine polarized valence and sea quark distributions and their contributions to the nucleon spin. In addition, a new approach to derive inclusive asymmetries is discussed.
In the context of both inclusive and diffractive deep inelastic scattering, we derive the first phenomenological consequences of the inclusion of Pomeron loops in the QCD evolution equations towards high energy. We discuss the transition between the well-known geometric scaling regime and the new diffusive scaling, that emerges for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of Q^2, well above the proton saturation momentum.
We study the beam single spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering in at order 1/Q. There are two competing contributions: the leading order transverse momentum dependent parton distribution $h_1^\perp(x,k_\perp)$ convoluted with chiral-odd fragmentation function $\hat e(z)$, and the chiral-odd distribution function $e(x)$ convoluted with Collins fragmentation function $H_1^\perp(z,k'_\perp)$. We estimate this asymmetry and compare with the experimental measurements from CLAS and HERMES collaborations.
We discuss resummation of large logarithmic terms that appear in the cross-section of semi-inclusive DIS in the case when the final-state hadron follows the direction of the incoming electroweak vector boson in the c.m. frame of the vector boson and the initial-state proton.
We calculate $g_{1T}$ and $h_{1L}^\perp$, two of the eight leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), in the light-cone quark-diquark model. The new TMDs can be measured through semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We present predictions of the single and double spin asymmetries related to $g_{1T}$ and $h_{1L}^\perp$ in SIDIS at HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab kinematics respectively.
A study of inclusive production of single hadrons with finite transverse momentum in neutral current deep-inelastic scattering has been carried out. Cross sections have been calculated using perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics at next-to-leading order and compared to HERA data. Predictions for light charged hadron production data were also calculated for large values of Q^2 to show the possible effects of the Z-boson exchange.
The Sivers function is extracted from HERMES data on single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering. Our analysis use a simple Gaussian model for the distribution of transverse parton momenta, together with the flavor dependence given by the leading 1/Nc approximation and a neglect of the Sivers antiquark distribution. We find that within the errors of the data these approximations are sufficient.
In the current region of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, most events are accompanied by intensive radiation of soft and collinear partons which cannot be reliably described at any fixed order of perturbative QCD. In this paper, a resummation formalism that describes such multiple parton radiation is compared to the HERA data on semi-inclusive DIS, including the distributions of energy flow and charged particle multiplicity. We show that the resummation of multiple parton radiation improves the agreement between the theory and the data. We make some suggestions on further experimental…
We calculate, in a model, the beam spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive jet production in deep inelastic scattering. This twist-3, $T$-odd observable is non-zero due to final state strong interactions. With reasonable choices for the parameters, one finds an asymmetry of several percent, about the size seen experimentally. We present the result both as an explicit asymmetry calculation and as a model calculation of the new transverse-momentum dependent distribution function $g^\perp$.
We analyse the role of partonic transverse motion in unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes. Imposing appropriate kinematical conditions, we find some constraints which fix an upper limit to the range of allowed kt values and lead to interesting results, particularly for some observables like the <cos phi_h> azimuthal modulation of the unpolarized SIDIS cross section and the average transverse momentum of the final, detected hadron.
We study the cross section for one-particle inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the nucleon for low transverse momentum of the detected hadron. We decompose the cross section in terms of structure functions and calculate them at tree level in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Our results are complete in the one-photon exchange approximation at leading and first subleading twist accuracy, with both beam and target polarization.
We shortly review the various methods suggested for determining the transversity function. Among such methods, we consider especially those based on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In the framework of this kind of reactions, we propose to measure a double spin asymmetry, using a transversely polarized proton target and a longitudinally polarized lepton beam, and fixing the direction of the final pion. Under particular conditions, the asymmetry is sensitive to the transversity function.
We report on a recently completed, first calculation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections for heavy flavor contributions to the inclusive structure function $g_1$ in longitudinally polarized deep-inelastic scattering. All results are derived with largely analytical methods and retain the full dependence on the heavy quark's mass. As a first phenomenological application, inclusive charm production at a future electron-ion collider and its sensitivity to the polarized gluon distribution is studied. Theoretical uncertainties due to the residual dependence on unphysical factorization …
We present the details of a new factorized approach to semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering which treats QED and QCD radiation on equal footing, and provides a systematically improvable approximation to the extraction of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. We demonstrate how the QED contributions can be well approximated by collinear factorization, and illustrate the application of the factorized approach to QED radiation in inclusive scattering. For semi-inclusive processes, we show how radiation effects prevent a well-defined "photon-nucleon" frame, forcing one to use a t…
We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We consider cross sections for various combinations of the polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the process $ep\to eπX$ for the typical kinematics in the COMPASS experiment. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the cor…
The $T$-odd distribution functions contributing to transversity properties of the nucleon and their role in fueling nontrivial contributions to azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering are investigated. We use a dynamical model to evaluate these quantities in terms of HERMES kinematics.
We highlight the principal results of a computation in the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory (CGC EFT) of the next-to-leading order (NLO) impact factor for inclusive photon+dijet production at Bjorken $x_{\rm Bj} \ll 1$ in deeply inelastic electron-nucleus (e+A DIS) collisions. When combined with extant results for next-to-leading log $x_{\rm Bj}$ JIMWLK renormalization group (RG) evolution of gauge invariant two-point ("dipole") and four-point ("quadrupole") correlators of light-like Wilson lines, the inclusive photon+dijet e+A DIS cross-section can be determined to $\sim 10$\% ac…
We present results for leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering due to naively time-reversal odd transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions from the light-cone constituent quark model. We carefully discuss the range of applicability of the model, especially with regard to positivity constraints and evolution effects. We find good agreement with available experimental data from COMPASS and HERMES, and present predictions to be tested in forthcoming experiments at Jefferson Lab.
Inspired by a recent study of Iancu, Mueller and Triantafyllopoulos [1] and earlier papers by Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff [2,3], we propose semi-inclusive diffractive deep inelastic scattering (SIDDIS) to investigate the gluon tomography in the nucleon and nuclei at small-$x$. The relevant diffractive quark and gluon parton distribution functions (DPDF) can be computed in terms of the color dipole S-matrices in the fundamental and adjoint representations, respectively. Novel correlations from the gluon tomography in the dipole S-matrix can be experimentally studied through the DPDFs in these pr…
We consider semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan events within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. Based on the simultaneous fit of multiple data points, we extract the unpolarized TMD distributions and the non-perturbative evolution kernel. The high quality of the fit confirms a complete universality of TMD non-perturbative distributions. The extraction is supplemented by phenomenological analyses of various parts of the TMD factorization, such as sensitivity to non-perturbative parameterizations, perturbative orders, collinear distributions, correlati…
We present a first attempt at a global fit of unpolarized quark transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions from available data on semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan and $Z$ boson production processes. This analysis is performed in the low transverse momentum region, at leading order in perturbative QCD and with the inclusion of energy scale evolution effects at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.
We calculate and analize the ${\cal{O}}(α_s)$ one-particle inclusive cross section in polarized deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering, using dimensional regularization and the HVBM prescription for $γ_5$. We discuss the factorization of all the collinear singularities related to the process, particularly those which are absorbed in the redefinition of the spin dependent analogue of the recently introduced fracture functions. This is done in the usual $\overline{MS}$ scheme and in another one, called $\overline{MS_p}$, which factorizes soft contributions and guarantees the axial current (non)…
