Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of the brain and the spinal cord, which leads to paralysis of motor functions. Patients retain their ability to blink, which can be used for communication. Here, We present an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that uses eye-blinks to communicate with the outside world, running on real-time Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. The system uses a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to find the blinking pattern, which is defined as a series of Open and Closed states. Each pattern is mapped to a collection of words that manifest the patient's intent. To investigate the best trade-off between accuracy and latency, we investigated several Convolutional Network architectures, such as ResNet, SqueezeNet, DenseNet, and InceptionV3, and evaluated their performance. We found that the InceptionV3 architecture, after hyper-parameter fine-tuning on the specific task led to the best performance with an accuracy of 99.20% and 94ms latency. This work demonstrates how the latest advances in deep learning architectures can be adapted for clinical systems that ameliorate the patient's quality of life regardless of the point-of-care.

Event cameras contain emerging, neuromorphic vision sensors that capture local light intensity changes at each pixel, generating a stream of asynchronous events. This way of acquiring visual information constitutes a departure from traditional frame based cameras and offers several significant advantages: low energy consumption, high temporal resolution, high dynamic range and low latency. Driver monitoring systems (DMS) are in-cabin safety systems designed to sense and understand a drivers physical and cognitive state. Event cameras are particularly suited to DMS due to their inherent advanta…

Driver drowsiness detection using videos/images is one of the most essential areas in today's time for driver safety. The development of deep learning techniques, notably Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), applied in computer vision applications such as drowsiness detection, has shown promising results due to the tremendous increase in technology in the recent few decades. Eyes that are closed or blinking excessively, yawning, nodding, and occlusion are all key aspects of drowsiness. In this work, we have applied four different Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) techniques on the YawDD datas…
In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks have achieved state of the art performance in various computer vision task such as classification, detection or segmentation. Traditional Bag-of-visual Words (BoWs) model is commonly generated with many steps including local feature extraction, codebook generation, and feature quantization, etc. Those steps are relatively independent with each other and are hard to be jointly optimized. Moreover, the dependency on hand-crafted local feature makes BoWs model not effective in conveying high-level semantics. These issues largely hinder the performance of BoWs model in large-scale image applications. To conquer these issues, we propose an End-to-End BoWs (E$^2$BoWs) model based on Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN)…
A wide variety of orthographic coding schemes and models of visual word identification have been developed to account for masked priming data that provide a measure of orthographic similarity between letter strings. These models tend to include hand-coded orthographic representations with single unit coding for specific forms of knowledge (e.g., units coding for a letter in a given position). Here we assess how well a range of these coding schemes and models account for the pattern of form priming effects taken from the Form Priming Project and compare these findings to results observed with 1…

Conversion of one font to another font is very useful in real life applications. In this paper, we propose a Convolutional Recurrent Generative model to solve the word level font transfer problem. Our network is able to convert the font style of any printed text images from its current font to the required font. The network is trained end-to-end for the complete word images. Thus it eliminates the necessary pre-processing steps, like character segmentations. We extend our model to conditional setting that helps to learn one-to-many mapping function. We employ a novel convolutional recurrent mo…

We develop a Deep-Text Recurrent Network (DTRN) that regards scene text reading as a sequence labelling problem. We leverage recent advances of deep convolutional neural networks to generate an ordered high-level sequence from a whole word image, avoiding the difficult character segmentation problem. Then a deep recurrent model, building on long short-term memory (LSTM), is developed to robustly recognize the generated CNN sequences, departing from most existing approaches recognising each character independently. Our model has a number of appealing properties in comparison to existing scene t…
We introduce an algorithm for word-level text spotting that is able to accurately and reliably determine the bounding regions of individual words of text "in the wild". Our system is formed by the cascade of two convolutional neural networks. The first network is fully convolutional and is in charge of detecting areas containing text. This results in a very reliable but possibly inaccurate segmentation of the input image. The second network (inspired by the popular YOLO architecture) analyzes each segment produced in the first stage, and predicts oriented rectangular regions containing individ…
In this paper, we propose to employ the convolutional neural network (CNN) for the image question answering (QA). Our proposed CNN provides an end-to-end framework with convolutional architectures for learning not only the image and question representations, but also their inter-modal interactions to produce the answer. More specifically, our model consists of three CNNs: one image CNN to encode the image content, one sentence CNN to compose the words of the question, and one multimodal convolution layer to learn their joint representation for the classification in the space of candidate answe…

This work proposes a simple instance retrieval pipeline based on encoding the convolutional features of CNN using the bag of words aggregation scheme (BoW). Assigning each local array of activations in a convolutional layer to a visual word produces an \textit{assignment map}, a compact representation that relates regions of an image with a visual word. We use the assignment map for fast spatial reranking, obtaining object localizations that are used for query expansion. We demonstrate the suitability of the BoW representation based on local CNN features for instance retrieval, achieving compe…
While the Transformer architecture has become the de-facto standard for natural language processing tasks, its applications to computer vision remain limited. In vision, attention is either applied in conjunction with convolutional networks, or used to replace certain components of convolutional networks while keeping their overall structure in place. We show that this reliance on CNNs is not necessary and a pure transformer applied directly to sequences of image patches can perform very well on image classification tasks. When pre-trained on large amounts of data and transferred to multiple m…

Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the electrical brain activity in real-time by using sensors placed on the scalp. Artifacts, due to eye movements and blink, muscular/cardiac activity and generic electrical disturbances, have to be recognized and eliminated to allow a correct interpretation of the useful brain signals (UBS) of EEG. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is effective to split the signal into independent components (ICs) whose re-projections on 2D scalp topographies (images), also called topoplots, allow to recognize/separate artifacts and by UBS. Until now, IC topoplot analys…

Convolutional kernels are basic and vital components of deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). In this paper, we equip convolutional kernels with shape attributes to generate the deep Irregular Convolutional Neural Networks (ICNN). Compared to traditional CNN applying regular convolutional kernels like ${3\times3}$, our approach trains irregular kernel shapes to better fit the geometric variations of input features. In other words, shapes are learnable parameters in addition to weights. The kernel shapes and weights are learned simultaneously during end-to-end training with the standard bac…

We consider referring image segmentation. It is a problem at the intersection of computer vision and natural language understanding. Given an input image and a referring expression in the form of a natural language sentence, the goal is to segment the object of interest in the image referred by the linguistic query. To this end, we propose a dual convolutional LSTM (ConvLSTM) network to tackle this problem. Our model consists of an encoder network and a decoder network, where ConvLSTM is used in both encoder and decoder networks to capture spatial and sequential information. The encoder networ…
In this paper, we propose multimodal convolutional neural networks (m-CNNs) for matching image and sentence. Our m-CNN provides an end-to-end framework with convolutional architectures to exploit image representation, word composition, and the matching relations between the two modalities. More specifically, it consists of one image CNN encoding the image content, and one matching CNN learning the joint representation of image and sentence. The matching CNN composes words to different semantic fragments and learns the inter-modal relations between image and the composed fragments at different …

We first show that the proposed architecture goes beyond state-of-the-art on closed-set word identification, by attaining …
We propose an end-to-end deep learning architecture for word-level visual speech recognition. The system is a combination of spatiotemporal convolutional, residual and bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory networks. We train and evaluate it on the Lipreading In-The-Wild benchmark, a challenging database of 500-size target-words consisting of 1.28sec video excerpts from BBC TV broadcasts. The proposed network attains word accuracy equal to 83.0, yielding 6.8 absolute improvement over the current state-of-the-art, without using information about word boundaries during training or testing.

Spatial pooling is an important step in computer vision systems like Convolutional Neural Networks or the Bag-of-Words method. The spatial pooling purpose is to combine neighbouring descriptors to obtain a single descriptor for a given region (local or global). The resultant combined vector must be as discriminant as possible, in other words, must contain relevant information, while removing irrelevant and confusing details. Maximum and average are the most common aggregation functions used in the pooling step. To improve the aggregation of relevant information without degrading their discrimi…

Lip-reading has attracted a lot of research attention lately thanks to advances in deep learning. The current state-of-the-art model for recognition of isolated words in-the-wild consists of a residual network and Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BGRU) layers. In this work, we address the limitations of this model and we propose changes which further improve its performance. Firstly, the BGRU layers are replaced with Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN). Secondly, we greatly simplify the training procedure, which allows us to train the model in one single stage. Thirdly, we show that the c…
Convolutional Neural Networks have made their mark in various fields of computer vision in recent years. They have achieved state-of-the-art performance in the field of document analysis as well. However, CNNs require a large amount of annotated training data and, hence, great manual effort. In our approach, we introduce a method to drastically reduce the manual annotation effort while retaining the high performance of a CNN for word spotting in handwritten documents. The model is learned with weak supervision using a combination of synthetically generated training data and a small subset of t…
This paper focuses on tackling the problem of temporal language localization in videos, which aims to identify the start and end points of a moment described by a natural language sentence in an untrimmed video. However, it is non-trivial since it requires not only the comprehensive understanding of the video and sentence query, but also the accurate semantic correspondence capture between them. Existing efforts are mainly centered on exploring the sequential relation among video clips and query words to reason the video and sentence query, neglecting the other intra-modal relations (e.g., sem…
