We suggest a new approach to creation of general market equilibrium models involving economic agents with local and partial knowledge about the system and under different restrictions. The market equilibrium problem is then formulated as a quasi-variational inequality that enables us to establish existence results for the model in different settings. We also describe dynamic processes, which fall into information exchange schemes of the proposed market model. In particular, we propose an iterative solution method for quasi-variational inequalities, which is based on evaluations of the proper market information only in a neighborhood of the current market state without knowledge of the whole feasible set and prove its convergence.
In this paper, we introduce a split general quasi-variational inequality problem which is a natural extension of split variational inequality problem, quasi-variational and variational inequality problems in Hilbert spaces. Using projection method, we propose an iterative algorithm for the split general quasi-variational inequality problem and discuss some its special cases. Further, we discuss the convergence criteria of these iterative algorithms. The results presented in this paper generalize, unify and improve the previously known many results for the quasi-variational and variational ineq…
The main goal of this paper is to present the application of a superiorization methodology to solution of variational inequalities. Within this framework a variational inequality operator is considered as a small perturbation of a convex feasibility solver what allows to construct a simple iteration algorithm. The specific features of variational inequality problems allow to use a finite-value perturbation which may be advantageous from computational point of view. The price for simplicity and finite-value is that the algorithm provides an approximate solution of variational inequality problem…
We consider the variational inequality problem over the intersection of fixed point sets of firmly nonexpansive operators. In order to solve the problem, we present an algorithm and subsequently show the strong convergence of the generated sequence to the solution of the considered problem.
In this paper, we consider the monotone generalized variational inequality (MGVI) where the monotone operator is Lipschitz continuous. Inspired by the extragradient method and the projection contraction algorithms for monotone variational inequality (MVI), we propose a class of PGA-based Predictor-Corrector algorithms for MGVI. A significant characteristic of our algorithms for separable multi-blocks convex optimization problems is that they can be well adapted for parallel computation. Numerical simulations about different models for sparsity recovery show the wide applicability and effective…
In this paper, we study the D-gap function associated with a nonsmooth and nonmonotone variational inequality problem. We present some exact formulas for the subderivative, the regular subdifferential set, and the limiting subdifferential set of the D-gap function. By virtue of these formulas, we provide some sufficient and necessary conditions for the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz inequality property and the error bound property for the D-gap functions. As an application of our Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz inequality result and the abstract convergence result in [Attouch, et al., Convergence of descent methods …
In this note we investigate stochastic Nash equilibrium problems by means of monotone variational inequalities in probabilistic Lebesgue spaces. We apply our approach to a class of oligopolistic market equilibrium problems where the data are known through their probability distributions.
The aim of this paper is to present an extragradient method for variational inequality associated to a point-to-set vector field in Hadamard manifolds and to study its convergence properties. In order to present our method the concept of $ε$-enlargement of maximal monotone vector fields is used and its lower-semicontinuity is stablished in order to obtain the convergence of the method in this new context.
We study the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the inverse quasi-variational inequality problem. Motivated by the neural network approach to solving optimization problems such as variational inequality, monotone inclusion, and inverse variational problems, we consider a neural network associated with the inverse quasi-variational inequality problem, and establish the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the proposed network. We prove that every trajectory of the proposed neural network converges to the unique solution of the inverse quasi-variational inequality problem and that the…
This paper is concerned with the variational inequality problem (VIP) over the fixed point set of a quasi-nonexpansive operator. We propose, in particular, an algorithm which entails, at each step, projecting onto a suitably chosen half-space, and prove that the sequences it generates converge to the unique solution of the VIP. We also present an application of our result to a hierarchical optimization problem.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for solving variational inequality problems with monotone and Lipschitz-continuous mapping in Hilbert space. The iterative process is based on two well-known projection method and the hybrid (or outer approximation) method. However we do not use an extrapolation step in the projection method. The absence of one projection in our method is explained by slightly different choice of sets in hybrid method. We prove a strong convergence of the sequences generated by our method.
In this paper we present an inexact proximal point method for variational inequality problem on Hadamard manifolds and study its convergence properties. The proposed algorithm is inexact in two sense. First, each proximal subproblem is approximated by using the enlargement of the vector field in consideration and then the next iterated is obtained by solving this subproblem allowing a suitable error tolerance. As an application, we obtain an inexact proximal point method for constrained optimization problems, equilibrium problems and nonlinear optimization problems on Hadamard manifolds.
We propose a prototypical Split Inverse Problem (SIP) and a new variational problem, called the Split Variational Inequality Problem (SVIP), which is a SIP. It entails finding a solution of one inverse problem (e.g., a Variational Inequality Problem (VIP)), the image of which under a given bounded linear transformation is a solution of another inverse problem such as a VIP. We construct iterative algorithms that solve such problems, under reasonable conditions, in Hilbert space and then discuss special cases, some of which are new even in Euclidean space.
Variational inequality problems allow for capturing an expansive class of problems, including convex optimization problems, convex Nash games and economic equilibrium problems, amongst others. Yet in most practical settings, such problems are complicated by uncertainty, motivating the examination of a stochastic generalization of the variational inequality problem and its extensions in which the components of the mapping contain expectations. When the associated sets are unbounded, ascertaining existence requires having access to analytical forms of the expectations. Naturally, in practical se…
In this paper we first introduce two new financial products: stock loan and capped stock loan. Then we develop a pure variational inequality method to establish explicitly the values of these stock loans. Finally, we work out ranges of fair values of parameters associated with the loans.
The subgradient extragradient method for solving the variational inequality (VI) problem, which is introduced by Censor et al. \cite{CGR}, replaces the second projection onto the feasible set of the VI, in the extragradient method, with a subgradient projection onto some constructible half-space. Since the method has been introduced, many authors proposed extensions and modifications with applications to various problems. In this paper, we introduce a modified subgradient extragradient method by improving the stepsize of its second step. Convergence of the proposed method is proved under stand…
This paper is focused on a stochastic quasi-variational inequality (SQVI) problem with a continuous and strongly-monotone mapping over a closed and convex set where the projection onto the constraint set may not be easy to compute. We present an inexact variance reduced stochastic scheme to solve SQVI problems and analyzed its convergence rate and oracle complexity. A linear rate of convergence is obtained by progressively increasing sample-size and approximating the projection operator. Moreover, we show how a competition among blood donation organizations can be modeled as an SQVI and we pro…
This paper deals with the solving of variational inequality problem where the constrained set is given as the intersection of a number of fixed-point sets. To this end, we present an extrapolated sequential constraint method. At each iteration, the proposed method is updated based on the ideas of a hybrid conjugate gradient method used to accelerate the well-known hybrid steepest descent method, and an extrapolated cyclic cutter method for solving a common fixed point problem. We prove strong convergence of the method under some suitable assumptions of step-size sequences. We finally show the …
We consider a network of prosumers involved in peer-to-peer energy exchanges, with differentiation price preferences on the trades with their neighbors, and we analyze two market designs: (i) a centralized market, used as a benchmark, where a global market operator optimizes the flows (trades) between the nodes, local demand and flexibility activation to maximize the system overall social welfare; (ii) a distributed peer-to-peer market design where prosumers in local energy communities optimize selfishly their trades, demand, and flexibility activation. We first characterizethe solution of the…
We consider a quasi-variational inequality governed by a moving set. We employ the assumption that the movement of the set has a small Lipschitz constant. Under this requirement, we show that the quasi-variational inequality has a unique solution which depends Lipschitz-continuously on the source term. If the data of the problem is (directionally) differentiable, the solution map is directionally differentiable as well. We also study the optimal control of the quasi-variational inequality and provide necessary optimality conditions of strongly stationary type.
In this paper, we consider a dynamic viscoelastic contact problem with friction and wear, and describe it as a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. We formulate the previous problem as a hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality by employing the variational method. We adopt the Rothe method to show the existence and uniqueness of weak solution for the hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality under mild conditions. We also give a fully discrete scheme for solving the hyperbolic quasi-variational inequality and obtain error estimates for the fully discrete scheme.
Neural networks have become ubiquitous tools for solving signal and image processing problems, and they often outperform standard approaches. Nevertheless, training neural networks is a challenging task in many applications. The prevalent training procedure consists of minimizing highly non-convex objectives based on data sets of huge dimension. In this context, current methodologies are not guaranteed to produce global solutions. We present an alternative approach which foregoes the optimization framework and adopts a variational inequality formalism. The associated algorithm guarantees conve…
In this paper, we introduce and study a new extragradient iterative process for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of an infinite family of nonexpansive mappings and the set of solutions of a variational inequality for an inverse strongly monotone mapping in a real Hilbert space. Also, we prove that under quite mild conditions the iterative sequence defined by our new extragradient method converges strongly to a solution of the fixed point problem for an infinite family of nonexpansive mappings and the classical variational inequality problem. In addition, utilizing this resul…
In this paper, we study the strong convergence of two Mann-type inertial extragradient algorithms, which are devised with a new step size, for solving a variational inequality problem with a monotone and Lipschitz continuous operator in real Hilbert spaces. Strong convergence theorems for our algorithms are proved without the prior knowledge of the Lipschitz constant of the operator. Finally, we provide some numerical experiments to illustrate the performances of the proposed algorithms and provide a comparison with related ones.
We consider an optimal control problem governed by an elliptic variational inequality of the second kind. The problem is discretized by linear finite elements for the state and a variational discrete approach for the control. Based on a quadratic growth condition we derive nearly optimal a priori error estimates. Moreover, we establish second order sufficient optimality conditions that ensure a quadratic growth condition. These conditions are rather restrictive, but allow us to construct a one-dimensional locally optimal solution with reduced regularity, which serves as an exact solution for n…
We consider a stochastic variational inequality (SVI) problem with a continuous and monotone mapping over a closed and convex set. In strongly monotone regimes, we present a variable sample-size averaging scheme (VS-Ave) that achieves a linear rate with an optimal oracle complexity. In addition, the iteration complexity is shown to display a muted dependence on the condition number compared with standard variance-reduced projection schemes. To contend with merely monotone maps, we develop amongst the first proximal-point algorithms with variable sample-sizes (PPAWSS), where increasingly accura…
In this paper, we study variational inequality problems (VIPs) with involved mappings and feasible sets characterized by polynomial functions (namely, polynomial VIPs). We propose a numerical algorithm for computing solutions to polynomial VIPs based on Lagrange multiplier expressions and the Moment-SOS hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations. We also extend our approach to finding more or even all solutions to polynomial VIPs. We show that the method proposed in this paper can find solutions or detect the nonexistence of solutions within finitely many steps, under some general assumptions. In a…
Building up on classical linear formulations, we posit that a broad class of problems in signal synthesis and in signal recovery are reducible to the basic task of finding a point in a closed convex subset of a Hilbert space that satisfies a number of nonlinear equations involving firmly nonexpansive operators. We investigate this formalism in the case when, due to inaccurate modeling or perturbations, the nonlinear equations are inconsistent. A relaxed formulation of the original problem is proposed in the form of a variational inequality. The properties of the relaxed problem are investigate…
We introduce a new extragradient iterative process, motivated and inspired by [S. H. Khan, A Picard-Mann Hybrid Iterative Process, Fixed Point Theory and Applications, doi:10.1186/1687-1812-2013-69], for finding a common element of the set of fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping and the set of solutions of a variational inequality for an inverse strongly monotone mapping in a Hilbert space. Using this process, we prove a weak convergence theorem for the class of nonexpansive mappings in Hilbert spaces. Finally, as an application, we give some theorems by using resolvent operator and strictly…
We study nested variational inequalities, which are variational inequalities whose feasible set is the solution set of another variational inequality. We present a projected averaging Tikhonov algorithm requiring the weakest conditions in the literature to guarantee the convergence to solutions of the nested variational inequality. Specifically, we only need monotonicity of the upper- and the lower-level variational inequalities. Also, we provide the first complexity analysis for nested variational inequalities considering optimality of both the upper- and lower-level.
This paper continues earlier work and is concerned with the inverse problem of parameter identification in variational inequalities of the second kind that does not only treat the parameter linked to a bilinear form, but importantly also the parameter linked to a nonlinear non-smooth function. The optimization approach in the earlier work on the inverse problem using the output-least squares formulation involves the variational inequality of the second kind as constraint. Here we use regularization technics of nondifferentiable optimization, regularize the nonsmooth part in the variational ine…
In this paper, we introduce a class of variational inequalities, where the involved function is the sum of an arbitrary given vector and a homogeneous polynomial defined by a tensor; and we call it the tensor variational inequality (TVI). The TVI is a natural extension of the affine variational inequality and the tensor complementarity problem. We show that a class of multi-person noncooperative games can be formulated as a TVI. In particular, we investigate the global uniqueness and solvability of the TVI. To this end, we first introduce two classes of structured tensors and discuss some rela…
Motivated by problems arising in decentralized control problems and non-cooperative Nash games, we consider a class of strongly monotone Cartesian variational inequality (VI) problems, where the mappings either contain expectations or their evaluations are corrupted by error. Such complications are captured under the umbrella of Cartesian stochastic variational inequality problems and we consider solving such problems via stochastic approximation (SA) schemes. Specifically, we propose a scheme wherein the steplength sequence is derived by a rule that depends on problem parameters such as monot…
The stochastic variational inequality problem (SVIP) is an equilibrium model that includes random variables and has been widely applied in various fields such as economics and engineering. Expected residual minimization (ERM) is an established model for obtaining a reasonable solution for the SVIP, and its objective function is an expected value of a suitable merit function for the SVIP. However, the ERM is restricted to the case where the distribution is known in advance. We extend the ERM to ensure the attainment of robust solutions for the SVIP under the uncertainty distribution (the extend…

We propose stochastic variance reduced algorithms for solving convex-concave saddle point problems, monotone variational inequalities, and monotone inclusions. Our framework applies to extragradient, forward-backward-forward, and forward-reflected-backward methods both in Euclidean and Bregman setups. All proposed methods converge in the same setting as their deterministic counterparts and they either match or improve the best-known complexities for solving structured min-max problems. Our results reinforce the correspondence between variance reduction in variational inequalities and minimizat…
This paper is concerned with dynamic user equilibrium (DUE) with elastic travel demand (E-DUE). We present and prove a variational inequality (VI) formulation of E-DUE using measure-theoretic argument. Moreover, existence of the E-DUE is formally established with a version of Brouwer's fixed point theorem in a properly defined Hilbert space. The existence proof requires the effective delay operator to be continuous, a regularity condition also needed to ensure the existence of DUE with fixed demand (Han et al., 2013c). Our proof does not invoke the a priori upper bound of the departure rates (…
In this paper, we introduce and study a stochastic differential variational inequality (SDVI) which consists of a stochastic differential equation and a stochastic variational inequality. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for SDVI by using the iteration method and Gronwall's inequality. Moreover, we show the convergence of Euler scheme for solving SDVI under some mild conditions. Finally, we apply the obtained results to solve the electrical circuits with diodes and the collapse of the bridge problems in stochastic environment.
In this paper, we study a new variant of Moreau's sweeping process with velocity constraint. Based on an adapted version of Moreau's catching-up algorithm, we show the well-posedness (in the sense existence and uniqueness) of this problem in a general framework. We show the equivalence between this implicit sweeping process and a quasistatic evolution variational inequality. It is well known that the variational formulations of many mechanical problems with unilateral contact and friction lead to an evolution variational inequality. As an application, we reformulate the quasistatic antiplane f…
