In this short note we perform canonical analysis of geometrical action for Dp-brane. We also discuss tachyon condensation in case of the geometrical action for unstable D(p+1)-brane.
New extended superspaces associated with topological charge algebras of the D-brane are used to construct D-brane actions without worldvolume gauge fields. The actions are shown to be kappa-symmetric under an appropriately chosen right group action.
We show that one can construct D-branes in parafermionic and WZW theories (and their orbifolds) which have very natural geometrical interpretations, and yet are not automatically included in the standard Cardy construction of D-branes in rational conformal field theory. The relation between these theories and their T-dual description leads to an analogy between these D-branes and the familiar A-branes and B-branes of N=2 theories.
This letter aims to analyse the so-called configurational entropy in the Weyl pure geometrical thick brane model. The Weyl structure plays a prominent role in the thickness of this model. We find a set of parameters associated to the brane width where the configurational entropy exhibits critical points. Furthermore, we show, by means of this information-theoretical measure, that a stricter bound on the parameter of Weyl pure geometrical brane model arises from the CE.
A geometrical analysis is given of Dirichlet fourbrane creation, when sixbrane crosses fivebrane in M-theory. A special property of the Taub-NUT space leads to the consequence. When brane configurations are considered for four dimensional N=2 field theories, sixbrane contributes to the beta-function through the Dirac string of the Taub-NUT space.
In this short note we present analysis of the tachyon kink solution in the canonical formalism. We also find Hamiltonian for simplified system of Dp-brane and anti-Dp-brane.
We consider the geometrical engineering constructions for the N = 1 SQCD vacua recently proposed by Giveon and Kutasov. After one T-duality, the geometries with wrapped D5 branes become N = 1 brane configurations with NS branes and D4 branes. The field theories encoded by the geometries contain extra massive adjoint fields for the flavor group. After performing a flop, the geometries contain branes, antibranes and branes wrapped on non-holomorphic cycles. The various tachyon condensations between pairs of wrapped D5 branes and anti D5 branes together with deformations of the cycles give rise t…
We study the supergravity duals of supersymmetric theories arising in the world-volume of D6 branes wrapping holomorphic two-cycles and special Lagrangian three-cycles within the framework of eight dimensional gauged supergravity. When uplifted to 11d, our solutions represent M-theory on the background of, respectively, the small resolution of the conifold and a manifold with G_2 holonomy. We further discuss on the flop and other possible geometrical transitions and its implications.
We study T-duality transformations in canonical formalism for Nambu-Gotto action. Then we investigate the relation between world-sheet double Wick rotation and sequence of target space T-dualities and Wick rotation in case of fundamental string and D1-brane.
When the phase structure of the black brane in grand canonical ensemble is discussed, a new bubble phase with the same boundary data is found to exist in this structure. As such, the phase transitions among bubble, black brane and "hot flat space" are possible, therefore giving a much enriched phase structure. We argue that under some conditions, either the grand canonical ensemble itself is unstable or there are some unknown new phases.
We further investigate the $NS$5 ring background using the tachyon map. Mapping the radion fields to the rolling tachyon helps to explain the motion of a probe $Dp$-brane in this background. It turns out that the radion field becomes tachyonic when the brane is confined to one dimensional motion inside the ring. We find explicit solutions for the geometrical tachyon field that describe stable kink solutions which are similar to those of the open string tachyon. Interestingly in the case of the geometric tachyon, the dynamics is controlled by a cosine potential. In addition, we couple a constan…
We study properties of non-BPS D(p+1)-brane in the background of k NS5-branes, with one transverse direction compactified on a circle, from the point of view of Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We present the analysis of two different embedding of non-BPS D(p+1)-brane in given background and study the classical solutions of given world-volume theory. We argue for the configuration of a non-BPS D(p+1)-brane which allows us to find solutions of the equations of motion that give unified descriptions of G and U-type branes.
We show how the SL(5) duality in M-theory is explained from a canonical analysis of M2-brane mechanics. Diffeomorphism constraints for a M2-brane coupled to supergravity background in d=4 are reformulated in a SL(5) covariant form, in which spatial diffeomorphism constraints are recast into a SL(5) vector and the generalized metric in the Hamiltonian constraint is quartic in the SL(5) generalized vielbein. The Hamiltonian for a M2 brane has the SL(5) duality symmetry in a background dependent gauge.
We consider type IIB superstring theory with embedded $D5$-brane and choose boundary conditions which preserve half of the initial supersymmetry. In the canonical approach that we use, boundary conditions are treated as canonical constraints. The effective theory, obtained from the initial one on the solution of boundary conditions, has the form of the type I superstring theory with embedded $D5$-brane. We obtain the expressions for $D5$-brane background fields of type I theory in terms of the $D5$-brane background fields of type IIB theory. We show that beside known $Ω$ even fields, they cont…
The self-duality of Dirichlet $3$-brane action under the $SL(2,R)$ duality transformation of type IIB superstring theory is shown in the Hamiltonian form of the path integral for the partition function by performing the direct integration with respect to the boundary gauge field. Through the integration in the phase space the canonical momentum conjugate to the boundary gauge field can be effectively replaced by the dual gauge field.
This is a companion paper of our previous work [1] where we studied the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat black $p$-branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions $D$ in a canonical ensemble. In this work we study the thermodynamics and phase structure of the same in a grand canonical ensemble. Since the boundary data in two cases are different (for the grand canonical ensemble boundary potential is fixed instead of the charge as in canonical ensemble) the stability analysis and the phase structure in the two cases are quite different. In particular, we find that there exis…
In the literatures, several types of thick smooth brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5-dimensional space time have been presented. The Weyl geometry is a non-Riemannian modification of 5-dimensional Kaluza--Klein (KK) theory. All these thick brane solutions preserve 4-dimensional Poincaré invariance, and some of them break $Z_2$--symmetry along the extra dimension. In this paper, we study localization of various matter fields on these pure geometrical thick branes, which also localize the graviton. We present the shape of the potential of the corresponding Schr$\mathrm{\d…
We show that the SL(2,R) duality symmetry of type IIB superstring theory can be formulated as the canonical transformation interchanging momenta and magnetic degrees of freedom associated to the abelian world-volume gauge field of the D-3-brane. D-strings are shown to be connected under the corresponding transformation in the world-sheet to the (m,n) family of string solutions of type IIB supergravity constructed by Schwarz. For the type IIA superstring the D-2-brane is mapped under the three dimensional world-volume electric-magnetic duality to the dimensional reduction of the membrane of M-t…
In this paper, we investigate the localization of a five-dimensional vector field on a pure geometrical thick brane. In previous work, it was shown that a free massless vector field cannot be localized on such thick brane. Hence we introduce the interaction between the vector field and the background scalar field. Two types of couplings are constructed as examples. We get a typical volcano potential for the first type of coupling and a finite square-well-like potential for the second one. Both of the two types of couplings ensure that the vector zero mode can be localized on the pure geometric…
A complete analysis of the canonical structure for a gauge fixed PST bosonic five brane action is performed. This canonical formulation is quadratic in the dependence on the antisymmetric field and it has second class constraints. We remove the second class constraints and a master canonical action with only first class constraints is proposed. The nilpotent BRST charge and its BRST invariant effective theory is constructed. The construction does not assume the existence of the inverse of the induced metric. Singular configurations are then physical ones. We obtain the physical Hamiltonian of …
It is found that a necessary completion of phase structure of D-dimensional charged black p-brane ($p > 0$) in a cavity requires two additional thermodynamical phases, the so-called "bubble of nothing" and/or the extremal brane, in canonical ensemble. This finding resolves the puzzle about the missing phases which are needed for the underlying phase diagram when $\tilde d = D - p - 3 \leq 2$ and gives a new (bubble) phase which can become globally stable when $\tilde d > 2$. An analog of Hawking-Page transition is also found among other new phase transitions, giving a complete phase structure …
We find Wess-Zumino actions for kappa invariant IIB D-branes in the explicit form. A simple and compact expression is obtained by the grace of spinor variables which are defined as power series of differential forms. Once explicit form of the Wess-Zumino actions is determined, global supersymmetry (SUSY) charges and constraint equations including local supersymmetry (kappa) generators can be determined. The SUSY algebra and the central charges are also calculated explicitly.
We present an extension of the Courant bracket to the ones for Dp-branes by analyzing Hamiltonians and local superalgebras. Contrast to the basis of the bracket for a fundamental string which consists of the momentum and the winding modes, the ones for Dp-branes contain higher rank R-R coupling tensors. We show that the R-R gauge transformation rules are obtained by these Courant brackets for Dp-branes where the Dirac-Born-Infeld gauge field and the "two-vierbein field" play an essential role. Canonical analysis of the worldvolume theories naturally gives the basis of the brackets and the targ…
In this paper we consider a geometrical Yukawa coupling as a solution to the problem of gauge field localization. We show that upon dimensional reduction the vector field component of the field is localized but the scalar component ($A_5$) is not. We show this for any smooth version of the Randall-Sundrum model. The covariant version of the model with geometrical coupling simplify the generalization to smooth versions generated by topological defects. This kind of model has been considered some time ago, but there it has been introduced two free parameters in order to get a localized solution …
We study the thermodynamics and phase structure of asymptotically flat non-dilatonic as well as dilatonic black branes in a cavity in arbitrary dimensions ($D$). We consider the canonical ensemble and so the charge inside the cavity and the temperature at the wall are fixed. We analyze the stability of the black brane equilibrium states and derive the phase structures. For the zero charge case we find an analog of Hawking-Page phase transition for these black branes in arbitrary dimensions. When the charge is non-zero, we find that below a critical value of the charge, the phase diagram has a …
We consider N=1 dualities in four dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories as a geometrical realization of wrapping D 6-branes around 3-cycles of Calabi-Yau threefolds in type IIA string theory. By extending the recent work of Ooguri and Vafa to the case of $SU, SO and Sp$ gauge groups with additional fields together with defining fields, we give simple geometrical descriptions of the interrelation between the electric theory and its magnetic dual in terms of the configuration of D 6-branes wrapped 3-cycles.
We review the geometrical approach to the description of the dynamics of super-p-branes, Dirichlet branes and the M5-brane, which is based on a generalization of the elements of surface theory to the description of the embedding of supersurfaces into target superspaces. Being manifestly supersymmetric in both, the superworldvolume of the brane and the target superspace, this approach unifies the Neveu-Schwarz-Ramond and the Green-Schwarz formulation and provides the fermionic kappa-symmetry of the Green-Schwarz-type superbrane actions with a clear geometrical meaning of standard worldvolume lo…
The action for the D=10 type II Dirichlet super-p-branes, which has been obtained recently, is reconstructed in a more geometrical form involving Lorentz harmonic variables. This new (Lorentz-harmonic) formulation possesses kappa-symmetry in an irreducible form and is used as a basis for applying a generalized action principle that provides the superfield equations of motion and clarifies the geometrical nature of the kappa-symmetry of these models. The case of a Dirichlet super-3-brane is considered in detail.
It is well known that charged black $Dp$ branes of type II string theory share a universal phase structure of van der Waals$-$Maxwell liquid-gas type except $D5$ and $D6$ branes. Interestingly, the phase structure of $D5$ and $D6$ branes can be changed to the universal form with the inclusion of particular delocalized charged lower-dimensional branes. For $D5$ branes one needs to introduce delocalized $D1$ branes, and for $D6$ branes, one needs to introduce delocalized $D0$ branes to obtain the universal structure. In a previous paper [J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 04} (2013) 100] Lu with Wei stud…
We show that a system of parallel D3 branes near a conifold singularity can be mapped onto an intersecting configuration of orthogonal branes in type IIA string theory. Using this brane configuration, we analyze the Higgs moduli space of the associated field theory. The dimension of the Higgs moduli space is computed from a geometrical analysis of the conifold singularity. Our results provide evidence for an extended s-rule. In addition, a discrepancy between the prediction of the brane configuration and the result obtained from a geometrical anaysis is noted. This discrepancy is traced back t…
We investigate the dynamics of a pair of coincident D5 branes in the background of $k$ NS5 branes. It has been proposed by Kutasov that the system with a single probing D-brane moving radially in this background is dual to the tachyonic DBI action for a non-BPS Dp brane. We extend this proposal to the non-abelian case and find that the duality still holds provided one promotes the radial direction to a matrix valued field associated with a non-abelian geometric tachyon and a particular parametrization for the transverse scalar fields is chosen. The equations of motion of a pair of coincident D…
We present a geometrical inspired study of the dynamics of $Dp$-branes. We focus on the usual nonpolynomial Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the worldvolume swept out by the brane in its evolution in general background spacetimes. We emphasize the form of the resulting equations of motion which are quite simple and resemble Newton's second law, complemented with a conservation law for a worldvolume bicurrent. We take a closer look at the classical Hamiltonian analysis which is supported by the ADM framework of general relativity. The constraints and their algebra are identified as well as the geom…
There exists a dramatic difference in phase structure between charged black Dp-branes with $p < 5$ and charged black D5 or D6 branes. In [1], we found that the phase structure of charged black D5 system can be changed qualitatively to that of charged black Dp with $p < 5$ by adding the delocalized D1 branes but the similar change does not happen for the charged black D6 system through adding the delocalized D2 branes (Note that both D1/D5 and D2/D6 belong to the same type of D(p - 4)/Dp system). Adding the delocalized D4 branes to the black D6 branes doesn't work, either. In this paper, we con…
The explicit form of the Wess-Zumino term of the PST super 5-brane Lagrangian in 11 dimensions is obtained. A complete canonical analysis for a gauge fixed PST super 5-brane action reveals the expected mixture of first and second class constraints. The canonical Hamiltonian is quadratic in the antisymmetric gauge field. Finally, we find the light cone gauge Hamiltonian for the theory and its stability properties are commented.
We consider the generation of thick brane configurations in a pure geometric Weyl integrable 5D space time which constitutes a non-Riemannian generalization of Kaluza-Klein (KK) theory. In this framework, we show how 4D gravity can be localized on a scalar thick brane which does not necessarily respect reflection symmetry, generalizing in this way several previous models based on the Randall-Sundrum (RS) system and avoiding both, the restriction to orbifold geometries and the introduction of the branes in the action by hand. We first obtain a thick brane solution that preserves 4D Poincar'e in…
We present the study of the dynamics of the geometrical tachyon field on an unstable D3-brane in the background of a bulk tachyon field of a D3-brane solution of Type-0 string theory. We find that the geometrical tachyon potential is modified by a function of the bulk tachyon and inflation occurs at weak string coupling, where the bulk tachyon condenses, near the top of the geometrical tachyon potential. We also find a late accelerating phase when the bulk tachyon asymptotes to zero and the geometrical tachyon field reaches the minimum of the potential.
Following hep-th/0305177, we write the boundary state of half S-brane in bosonic string theory as a grand canonical partition function of a unitary matrix model. From this representation, it follows that the annulus amplitude can be written as a grand canonical partition function of a unitary two-matrix model. We also show that the contribution of the exponentially growing couplings to the timelike oscillators can be resummed in a certain annulus amplitude.
Canonical forms are given for the nilpotent BRS operator $\d$ and the covariant `loop space' derivative ${\cal D}_{\m}$ for the p-brane fields for all odd p. The defining characteristic of ${\cal D}_{\m}$ is that it is a functional derivative operator which generalizes the ordinary functional derivative and also commutes with $\d$. Methods of construction for the canonical forms are discussed.
We define different non-relativistic limit of p-brane with the help of canonical form of the p-brane action. We discuss properties of these actions and their symmetries.
A mechanism to find different Weyl invariant p-branes and Dp-branes actions is explained. Our procedure clarifies the Weyl invariance for such systems. Besides, by considering gravity-dilaton effective action in higher dimensions we also derive a Weyl invariant action for p-branes. We argue that this derivation provides a geometrical scenario for the Weyl invariance of p-branes. Our considerations can be extended to the case of super-p-branes.
For the kappa-symmetric super IIA D-brane action by the canonical approach we construct an equivalent effective action which is characterized by an auxiliary scalar field. By analyzing the canonical equations of motion for the kappa-symmetry-gauge-fixed action we find a suitable conformal-like covariant gauge fixing of reparametrization symmetry to obtain a simplified effective action where the non-linear square root structure is removed. We discuss how the two effective actions are connected.
We study the dynamics of a D3-brane moving in the background of a bulk tachyon field of a D3-brane solution of Type-0 string theory. We show that the dynamics on the probe D3-brane can be described by a geometrical tachyon field rolling down its potential which is modified by a function of the bulk tachyon and inflation occurs at weak string coupling, where the bulk tachyon condenses, near the top of the geometrical tachyon potential. We also find a late accelerating phase when the bulk tachyon asymptotes to zero which in the geometrical tachyon picture corresponds to the minimum of the geomet…
The open string on the plane-wave limit of $dS_n\times S^n $ with constant $B_2$ and dilaton background fields is canonically quantized. This entails solving the classical equations of motion for the string, computing the symplectic form, and defining from its inverse the canonical commutation relations. Canonical quantization is proved to be perfectly suited for this task, since the symplectic form is unambiguously defined and non-singular. The string position and the string momentum operators are shown to satisfy equal-time canonical commutation relations. Noticeably the string position oper…
We study the canonical quantization of a bosonic string in presence of N twist fields. This generalizes the quantization of the twisted string in two ways: the in and out states are not necessarily twisted and the number of twist fields N can be bigger than 2. In order to quantize the theory we need to find the normal modes. Then we need to define a product between two modes which is conserved. Because of this we need to use the Klein-Gordon product and to separate the string coordinate into the classical and the quantum part. The quantum part has different boundary conditions than the origina…
We study the world volume action of fractional Dp-branes of type IIA string theory compactified on the orbifold T^4/Z_2. The geometric relation between these branes and wrapped branes is investigated using conformal techniques. In particular we examine in detail various scattering amplitudes and find that the leading low-energy interactions are consistent with the boundary action derived geometrically.
We discuss the covariant formulation of local field theories described by the Companion Lagrangian associated with p-branes. The covariantisation is shown to be useful for clarifying the geometrical meaning of the field equations and also their relation to the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of the standard Dirac-Born-Infeld theory.
We compute the Euclidean actions of a $d$-dimensional charged rotating black brane both in the canonical and the grand-canonical ensemble through the use of the counterterms renormalization method, and show that the logarithmic divergencies associated with the Weyl anomalies and matter field vanish. We obtain a Smarr-type formula for the mass as a function of the entropy, the angular momenta, and the electric charge, and show that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Using the conserved quantities and the Euclidean actions, we calculate the thermodynamics potentials of the…
Geometrical coupling in a co-dimensional one Randall-Sundrum scenario (RS) is used to study resonances of $p-$form fields. The resonances are calculated using the transfer matrix method. The model studied consider the standard RS with delta-like branes, and branes generated by kinks and domain-wall as well. The parameters are changed to control the thickness of the smooth brane. With this a very interesting pattern is found for the resonances. The geometrical coupling does not generate resonances for the reduced $p-$form in all cases considered.
We study the thermodynamic stability of charged black holes in gauged supergravity theories in D=5, D=4 and D=7. We find explicitly the location of the Hawking-Page phase transition between charged black holes and the pure anti-de Sitter space-time, both in the grand-canonical ensemble, where electric potentials are held fixed, and in the canonical ensemble, where total charges are held fixed. We also find the explicit local thermodynamic stability constraints for black holes with one non-zero charge. In the grand-canonical ensemble, there is in general a region of phase space where neither th…
The understanding of the fermionic sector of the worldvolume D-brane dynamics on a general background with fluxes is crucial in several branches of string theory, like for example the study of nonperturbative effects or the construction of realistic models living on D-branes. In this paper we derive a new simple Dirac-like form for the bilinear fermionic action for any Dp-brane in any supergravity background, which generalizes the usual Dirac action valid in absence of fluxes. A nonzero world-volume field strength deforms the usual Dirac operator in the action to a generalized non-canonical on…
We find Carroll non-BPS Dp-brane action by performing Carroll limit of a canonical form of unstable Dp-brane action. We analyze different Carroll limits and discuss solutions of the equations of motion of Carroll non-BPS Dp-brane at the tachyon vacuum.
We present a supersymmetric action functional for the coupled system of an open fundamental superstring and super-D0-branes attached to (identified with) the string endpoints. As a preliminary step the geometrical actions for a free super-D0-brane and a free type IIA superstring have been built. The pure bosonic limits of the action for the coupled system and of the equations of motion are discussed in some detail.
We analyse the moduli spaces of superconformal field theories (SCFTs). For N=2 we find an enhanced moduli space which in geometrical terms corresponds to tori with two independent complex structures. To explain the precise relation with the moduli space of SCFTs on K3 surfaces as described by Aspinwall and Morrison, we discuss some subtleties with the precise interpretation of the N=2 and N=4 moduli spaces. We also explain why in some cases the SYZ-description of mirror symmetry as fibrewise T-duality seems to break down. Using gluing matrices we give an algebraic description of D-branes and c…
In this paper, the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) brane model is confronted by current cosmic observational data sets from geometrical and dynamical perspectives. On the geometrical side, the recent released Union2 $557$ of type Ia supernovae (SN Ia), the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) from Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Degree Galaxy Redshift Survey (transverse and radial to line-of-sight data points), the cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurement given by the seven-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations (shift parameters $R$, $l_a(z_\ast)$ and redshift at the last…
One possibility for identifying the inflaton in the framework of string theory is that it is a $D$-brane modulus. This option involves a specific, non-canonical form of the kinetic energy -- the Dirac-Born-Infeld action. This note investigates the applicability of the slow roll approximation in inflationary models of this type. To this end the slow roll expansion of Liddle, Parsons and Barrow is derived for the case of the DBI action. The resulting slow roll conditions augment the standard ones valid in the case of canonical kinetic terms. It is also shown that in DBI models inflation does not…
The appearance of inner brane structure is an interesting issue in domain wall {brane model}. Because such structure usually leads to quasilocalized modes of various kinds of bulk fields. In this paper, we construct a domain wall brane model by using a scalar field $ϕ$, which couples to its kinetic term. The inner brane structure emerges as the scalar-kinetic coupling increases. With such brane structure, we show that it is possible to obtain gravity resonant modes in both tensor and scalar sectors. The number of the resonant modes depends on the vacuum expectation value of $ϕ$ and the form of…
The low energy excitation of the rotating D3-branes is thermodynamically stable up to a critical angular momentum density. This indicates that there is a corresponding phase transition of the ${\cal N}$=4 large $N$ super Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature. On the side of supergravity, we investigate the phase transition in the grand canonical ensemble and canonical ensemble. Some critical exponents of thermodynamic quantities are calculated. They obey the static scaling laws. Using the scaling laws related to the correlation length, we get the critical exponents of the correlation functio…
