We study the long-time behavior of localized solutions to linear or semilinear parabolic equations in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $n \ge 2$, assuming that the diffusion matrix depends on the space variable $x$ and has a finite limit along any ray as $|x| \to \infty$. Under suitable smallness conditions in the nonlinear case, we prove convergence to a self-similar solution whose profile is entirely determined by the asymptotic diffusion matrix. Examples are given which show that the profile can be a rather general Gaussian-like function, and that the approach to the self-similar solution can be arbitrarily slow depending on the continuity and coercivity properties of the asymptotic matrix. The proof of our results relies on appropriate energy estimates for the diffusion equation in self-similar variables. The new ingredient consists in estimating not only the difference $w$ between the solution and the self-similar profile, but also an antiderivative $W$ obtained by solving a linear elliptic problem which involves $w$ as a source term. Hence, a good part of our analysis is devoted to the study of linear elliptic equations whose coefficients are homogeneous of degree zero.
We prove nonexistence of nonconstant global minimizers with limit at infinity of the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in the whole $R^N$, where $f\in C^1(R)$ is a general nonlinearity and $N\geq 1$ is any dimension. As a corollary of this result, we establish nonexistence of nonconstant bounded radial global minimizers of the previous equation.
We consider the 3D Pauli operator with nonconstant magnetic field B of constant direction, perturbed by a symmetric matrix-valued electric potential V whose coefficients decay fast enough at infinity. We investigate the low-energy asymptotics of the corresponding spectral shift function. As a corollary, for generic negative V, we obtain a generalized Levinson formula, relating the low-energy asymptotics of the eigenvalue counting function and of the scattering phase of the perturbed operator.
In this article we study the existence, continuation and bifurcation from infinity of nonconstant solutions for a nonlinear Neumann problem. We apply the Leray-Schauder degree and the degree for SO(2)-equivariant gradient operators defined by the second author.
We devote this paper to study semi-stable nonconstant radial solutions of $S_k(D^2u) = w(|x|)g(u)$ on the Euclidean space $R^n$. We establish pointwise estimates and necessary conditions for the existence of such solutions (not necessarily bounded) for this equation. For bounded solutions we estimate their asymptotic behavior at infinity. All the estimates are given in terms of the spatial dimension $n$, the values of $k$ and the behavior at infinity of the growth rate function of $w$.
In a previous paper(2021), the author studied the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady-states to the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. As a result, he proved that the asymptotic behavior can be characterized by a limiting system that consists of a semilinear elliptic equation and an integral constraint. This paper studies the set of solutions of the limiting system. The first main result gives sufficient conditions for the existence/nonexistence of nonconstant solutions to the limiting system by a topological approach…
In this paper, we will study harmonic functions on the complete and incomplete spaces with nonnegative Ricci curvature which exhibit inhomogeneous collapsing behaviors at infinity. The main result states that any nonconstant harmonic function on such spaces yields a definite exponential growth rate which depends explicitly on the geometric data at infinity.
We prove that the energy over balls of entire, nonconstant, bounded solutions to the vector Allen-Cahn equation grows faster than $(\ln R)^k R^{n-2}$, for any $k>0$, as the volume $R^n$ of the ball tends to infinity. This improves the growth rate of order $R^{n-2}$ that follows from the general weak monotonicity formula. Moreover, our estimate can be considered as an approximation to the corresponding rate of order $R^{n-1}$ that is known to hold in the scalar case.
We are concerned with the following semi-linear polyharmonic equation with integral constraint \begin{align} \left\{\begin{array}{rl} &(-Δ)^pu=u^γ_+ ~~ \mbox{ in }{\mathbb{R}^n},\\ \nonumber &\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}u_+^γdx<+\infty, \end{array}\right. \end{align} where $n>2p$, $p\geq2$ and $p\in\mathbb{Z}$. We obtain for $γ\in(1,\frac{n}{n-2p})$ that any nonconstant solution satisfying certain growth at infinity is radial symmetric about some point in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and monotone decreasing in the radial direction. In the case $p=2$, the same results are established for more general exponent $γ\in…

This paper deals with the Cauchy problem for the Hardy-Hénon equation (and its fractional analogue). Local well-posedness for initial data in the class of continuous functions with slow decay at infinity is investigated. Small data (in critical weak-Lebesgue space) global well-posedness is obtained in $C_{b}([0,\infty);L^{q_c,\infty}(\RR^{n}))$. As a direct consequence, global existence for data in strong critical Lebesgue $L^{q_c}(\RR^{n})$ follows under a smallness condition while uniqueness is unconditional. Besides, we prove the existence of self-similar solutions and examine the long time…
In this article, we continue our investigation into the unique continuation properties of real-valued solutions to elliptic equations in the plane. More precisely, we make another step towards proving a quantitative version of Landis' conjecture by establishing unique continuation at infinity estimates for solutions to equations of the form $- Δu + V u = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $V = V_+ - V_-$, $V_+ \in L^\infty$, and $V_-$ is a non-trivial function that exhibits exponential decay at infinity. The main tool in the proof of this theorem is an order of vanishing estimate in combination with …

The question is studied whether weak solutions of linear partial integrodifferential equations approach a constant spatial profile after rescaling, as time goes to infinity. The possible limits and corresponding scaling functions are identified and are shown to actually occur. The limiting equations are fractional diffusion equations which are known to have self-similar fundamental solutions. For an important special case, is is shown that the asymptotic profile is Gaussian and convergence holds in $L^2$, that is, solutions behave like fundamental solutions of the heat equation to leading orde…
Fundamental global similarity solutions of the standard form u_\g(x,t)=t^{-\a_\g} f_\g(y), with the rescaled variable y= x/{t^{\b_\g}}, \b_\g= \frac {1-n \a_\g}{10}, where \a_\g>0 are real nonlinear eigenvalues (\g is a multiindex in R^N) of the tenth-order thin film equation (TFE-10) u_{t} = \nabla \cdot(|u|^{n} \n \D^4 u) in R^N \times R_+, n>0, are studied. The present paper continues the study began by the authors in the previous paper P. Alvarez-Caudevilla, J.D.Evans, and V.A. Galaktionov, The Cauchy problem for a tenth-order thin film equation I. Bifurcation of self-similar oscillatory f…

We study radial solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation $Δu+f(u)=0$ under rather general growth conditions on $f$. We construct a radial singular solution and study the intersection number between the singular solution and a regular solution. An application to bifurcation problems of elliptic Dirichlet problems is given. To this end, we derive a certain limit equation from the original equation at infinity, using a generalized similarity transformation. Through a generalized Cole-Hopf transformation, all the limit equations can be reduced into two typical cases, i.e., $Δu+u^p=0$ and $Δu+…
We study the long-time asymptotics of solutions of the uniformly parabolic equation \[ u_t + F(D^2u) = 0 \quad {in} \R^n\times \R_+, \] for a positively homogeneous operator $F$, subject to the initial condition $u(x,0) = g(x)$, under the assumption that $g$ does not change sign and possesses sufficient decay at infinity. We prove the existence of a unique positive solution $Φ^+$ and negative solution $Φ^-$, which satisfy the self-similarity relations \[ Φ^\pm (x,t) = λ^{α^\pm} Φ^\pm (λ^{1/2} x, λt). \] We prove that the rescaled limit of the solution of the Cauchy problem with nonnegative (no…
