We examine several issues pertaining to statistical predictivity of the string theory landscape for weak scale supersymmetry (SUSY). We work within a predictive landscape wherein super-renormalizable terms scan while renormalizable terms do not. We require stringy naturalness wherein the likelihood of values for observables is proportional to their frequency within a fertile patch of landscape including the MSSM as low energy effective theory with a pocket-universe value for the weak scale nearby to its measured value in our universe. In the string theory landscape, it is reasonable that the soft terms enjoy a statistical power-law draw to large values, subject to the existence of atoms as we know them (atomic principle). We argue that gaugino masses, scalar masses and trilinear soft terms should each scan independently. In addition, the various scalars should scan independently of each other unless protected by some symmetry. The expected non-universality of scalar masses-- once regarded as an undesirable feature-- emerges as an asset within the context of the string landscape picture. In models such as heterotic compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds, where the tree-level gauge kinetic function depends only on the dilaton, then gaugino masses may scale mildly, while scalar masses and A-terms, which depend on all the moduli, may scale much more strongly leading to a landscape solution to the SUSY flavor and CP problems in spite of non-diagonal Kähler metrics. We present numerical results for Higgs and sparticle mass predictions from the landscape within the generalized mirage mediation SUSY model and discuss resulting consequences for LHC SUSY and WIMP dark matter searches.
Models of natural supersymmetry give rise to a weak scale m_{weak}~m_{W,Z,h}~ 100 GeV without any (implausible) finetuning of independent contributions to the weak scale. These models, which exhibit radiatively driven naturalness (RNS), are expected to arise from statistical analysis of the string landscape wherein large soft terms are favored, but subject to a not-too-large value of the derived weak scale in each pocket universe of the greater multiverse. The string landscape picture then predicts, using the Isajet SUSY spectra generator Isasugra, a statistical peak at m_h~ 125 GeV with spart…
We consider an explicit effective field theory example based on the Bousso-Polchinski framework with a large number N of hidden sectors contributing to supersymmetry breaking. Each contribution comes from four form quantized fluxes, multiplied by random couplings. The soft terms in the observable sector in this case become random variables, with mean values and standard deviations which are computable. We show that this setup naturally leads to a solution of the flavor problem in low-energy supersymmetry if N is sufficiently large. We investigate the consequences for flavor violating processes…
In a fertile patch of the string landscape which includes the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as the low energy effective theory, rather general arguments from Douglas suggest a power-law statistical selection of soft breaking terms (m(soft)^n where n=2n_F+n_D-1 with n_F the number of hidden sector F-SUSY breaking fields and n_D the number of D-term SUSY breaking fields). The statistical draw towards large soft terms must be tempered by requiring an appropriate breakdown of electroweak (EW) symmetry with no contributions to the weak scale larger than a factor 2-5 of its measured v…
From several points of view it is strongly suggested that the current universe is unstable and will ultimately decay to one that is exactly supersymmetric (susy). The possibility that atoms and molecules form in this future universe requires that the degenerate electron/selectron mass is non-zero and hence that electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) survives the phase transition to exact susy. However, the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and several of its extensions have no EWSB in the susy limit. Among the extended higgs models that have been discussed one stands out in this regar…
The string theory landscape of vacua solutions provides physicists with some understanding as to the magnitude of the cosmological constant. Similar reasoning can be applied to the magnitude of the soft SUSY breaking terms in supersymmetric models of particle physics: there appears to be a statistical draw towards large soft terms which is tempered by the anthropic requirement of the weak scale lying not too far from ~100 GeV. For a mild statistical draw of m_{soft}^n with n=1 (as expected from SUSY breaking due to a single F term) then the light Higgs mass is preferred at ~125 GeV while spart…
We propose a new selection criteria for predicting the most probable wavefunction of the universe that propagates on the string landscape background, by studying its dynamics from a quantum cosmology view. Previously we applied this proposal to the $SUSY$ sector of the landscape. In this work the dynamic selection criterion is applied to the investigation of the non-$SUSY$ sector. In the absence of detailed information about its structure, it is assumed that this sector has a stochastic distribution of vacua energies. The calculation of a distribution probability for the cosmological constants $…
Rather general considerations from the string theory landscape suggest a statistical preference within the multiverse for soft SUSY breaking terms as large as possible subject to a pocket universe value for the weak scale not greater than a factor of 2-5 from our measured value. Within the gravity/moduli-mediated SUSY breaking framework, the Higgs mass is pulled to m_h~ 125 GeV while first/second generation scalars are pulled to tens of TeV scale and gauginos and third generation scalars remain at the few TeV range. In this case, one then expects comparable moduli- and anomaly-mediated contrib…
We present a model for the triggering of Supernovae Ia (SN Ia) by a phase transition to exact supersymmetry (susy) in the core of a white dwarf star. The model, which accomodates the data on SN Ia and avoids the problems of the standard astrophysical accretion based picture, is based on string landscape ideas and assumes that the decay of the false broken susy vacuum is enhanced at high density. In a slowly expanding susy bubble, the conversion of pairs of fermions to pairs of degenerate scalars releases a significant amount of energy which induces fusion in the surrounding normal matter shell…
The last decade has seen the emergence of a wide range of automated calculations for supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. This guide contains a brief summary of these, with the main focus on hadron collider phenomenology, as well as a brief introduction to the so-called SUSY Les Houches Accord. See also the Les Houches Web Repository for BSM Tools: http://www.ippp.dur.ac.uk/montecarlo/BSM/
In supersymmetric models where the superpotential mu term is generated with mu<< m_{soft} (e.g. from radiative Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking or compactified string models with sequestration and stabilized moduli), and where the string landscape 1. favors soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking terms as large as possible and 2. where the anthropic condition that electroweak symmetry is properly broken with a weak scale m_{W,Z,h}~100 GeV ({\it i.e.} not too weak of weak interactions), then these combined landscape/anthropic requirements act as an attractor pulling the soft SUSY breaking terms toward…
We investigate the effects of quantum entanglement between our horizon patch and others due to the tracing out of long wavelength modes in the wavefunction of the Universe as defined on a particular model of the landscape. In this, the first of two papers devoted to this topic, we find that the SUSY breaking scale is bounded both above {\em and} below: $10^{-10} M_{\rm P}\leq M_{\rm SUSY}\leq 10^{-8} M_{\rm P}$ for $GUT$ scale inflation. The lower bound is at least five orders of magnitude larger than the expected value of this parameter and can be tested by LHC physics.
In string theory with flux compactifications, anthropic selection for structure formation from a discretuum of vacuum energy values provides at present our only understanding of the tiny yet positive value of the cosmological constant. We apply similar reasoning to a toy model of the multiverse restricted to vacua with the MSSM as the low energy effective theory. Here, one expects a statistical selection favoring large soft SUSY breaking terms leading to a derived value of the weak scale in each pocket universe (with appropriate electroweak symmetry breaking) which differs from the weak scale …
A vast array of (metastable) vacuum solutions arise from string compactifications, each leading to different 4-d laws of physics. The space of these solutions, known as the string landscape, allows for an environmental solution to the cosmological constant problem. We examine the possibility of an environmental solution to the gauge hierarchy problem. We argue that the landscape favors softly broken supersymmetric models over particle physics models containing quadratic divergences, such as the Standard Model. We present a scheme for computing relative probabilities for supersymmetric models t…
We provide an anthropic reason that the supersymmetry breaking scale is much higher than the electroweak scale as indicated by the null result of collider experiments and observed 125 GeV Higgs boson. We focus on a new inflation model as a typical low-scale inflation model that may be expected in the string landscape. In this model, the R-symmetry is broken at the minimum of the inflaton potential and its breaking scale is related to the reheating temperature. Once we admit that the anthropic principle requires thermal leptogenesis, we obtain a lower bound on gravitino mass, which is related t…
String landscape ideas and the observation of a positive vacuum energy in the current universe suggest that there could be a future transition to an exactly supersymmetric world. Atomic and molecular binding in this susy background probably require that electroweak symmetry breaking survives the transition. Among several susy higgs models that have been discussed, one stands out in this regard. Thus, the higgs structure that is revealed at the LHC could have strong consequences for the type of bulk matter that may arise in a future susy universe.
The notion of stringy naturalness-- that an observable O_2 is more natural than O_1 if more (phenomenologically acceptable) vacua solutions lead to O_2 rather than O_1-- is examined within the context of the Standard Model (SM) and various SUSY extensions: CMSSM/mSUGRA, high-scale SUSY and radiatively-driven natural SUSY (RNS). Rather general arguments from string theory suggest a (possibly mild) statistical draw towards vacua with large soft SUSY breaking terms. These vacua must be tempered by an anthropic veto of non-standard vacua or vacua with too large a value of the weak scale m(weak). W…
In this mini-review, we summarize a variety of findings pertaining to consequences of the landscape of string theory for supersymmetry (SUSY) phenomenology. The idea is to adopt the MSSM as the most parsimonious 4-d low energy EFT after string compactification but where the scale of SUSY breaking is as yet undetermined. A power-law landscape draw to large soft terms is tempered by the requirement that the derived value of the weak scale lie within the anthropic window of Agrawal {\it et al.} (ABDS). Such a set-up predicts a light Higgs mass m_h~ 125 GeV with sparticles generally beyond LHC bou…
The statistics of the supersymmetry breaking scale in the string landscape has been extensively studied in the past finding either a power-law behaviour induced by uniform distributions of F-terms or a logarithmic distribution motivated by dynamical supersymmetry breaking. These studies focused mainly on type IIB flux compactifications but did not systematically incorporate the Kähler moduli. In this paper we point out that the inclusion of the Kähler moduli is crucial to understand the distribution of the supersymmetry breaking scale in the landscape since in general one obtains unstable vacu…
We argue that in the simplest version of the KKLT model, the maximal value of the Hubble constant during inflation cannot exceed the present value of the gravitino mass, H< m_{3/2}. This may have important implications for string cosmology and for the scale of the SUSY breaking in this model. If one wants to have inflation on high energy scale, one must develop phenomenological models with an extremely large gravitino mass. On the other hand, if one insists that the gravitino mass should be O(1 TeV), one will need to develop models with a very low scale of inflation. We show, however, that one…
The recent measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment a_μ\equiv (g-2)_μ/2 by the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment sharpens an earlier discrepancy between theory and the BNL E821 experiment. We examine the predicted Δa_μ\equiv a_μ(exp)-a_μ(th) in the context of supersymmetry with low electroweak naturalness (restricting to models which give a plausible explanation for the magnitude of the weak scale). A global analysis including LHC Higgs mass and sparticle search limits points to interpretation within the normal scalar mass hierarchy (NSMH) SUSY model wherein first/second generation matter …
Spacetime supersymmetry is widely believed to play an important role in most fundamental theories of physics, and is usually invoked in order to address problems of naturalness. In this paper, we examine the question of whether supersymmetry itself is ``natural'' (i.e., likely to exist as a fundamental component of nature at high energy scales). Our approach to answering this question is based on a statistical examination of the heterotic string landscape, and our conclusion is that supersymmetry is an exceedingly rare phenomenon. We also find that the likelihood of supersymmetry appearing at …
Rather general considerations of the string theory landscape imply a mild statistical draw towards large soft SUSY breaking terms tempered by the requirement of proper electroweak symmetry breaking where SUSY contributions to the weak scale are not too far from m(weak)~ 100 GeV. Such a picture leads to the prediction that m_h~ 125 GeV while most sparticles are beyond current LHC reach. Here we explore the possibility that the magnitude of the Peccei-Quinn (PQ) scale f_a is also set by string landscape considerations within the framework of a compelling SUSY axion model. First, we examine the c…
A scan of soft SUSY breaking parameters within the string theory landscape with the MSSM assumed as the low energy effective field theory -- using a power-law draw to large soft terms coupled with an anthropic selection of a derived weak scale to be within a factor four of our measured value -- predicts a peak probability of m_h~125 GeV with sparticles masses typically beyond the reach of LHC Run 2. Such multiverse simulations usually assume a fixed value of the SUSY conserving superpotential mu parameter to be within the assumed anthropic range, mu<~ 350 GeV. However, depending on the assumed…
We construct models in which the SM Higgs mass scans in a landscape. This is achieved by coupling the SM to a monodromy axion field through Minkowski 3-forms. The Higgs mass scans with steps given by delta(m_H^2)= eta mu f, where mu and f are the axion mass and periodicity respectively, and eta measures the coupling of the Higgs to the associated 3-form. The observed Higgs mass scale could then be selected on anthropic grounds. The monodromy axion may have a mass mu in a very wide range depending on the value of eta, and the axion periodity f. For eta=1 and f = 10^10 GeV, one has 10^{-3}eV < m…
The observation in the universe of a small but positive vacuum energy strongly suggests, in the string landscape picture, that there will ultimately be a phase transition to an exactly supersymmetric universe. This ground state or "true vacuum" of the universe could be similar to the minimal supersymmetric standard model with all the susy breaking parameters set to zero. Alternatively, it might be similar to the prominent superstring theories with nine flat space dimensions or to the supersymmetric anti-deSitter model that seems to be equivalent to a conformal field theory. We propose that the…
The methodology of the heterotic mini-landscape attempts to zero in on phenomenologically viable corners of the string landscape where the effective low energy theory is the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with localized grand unification. The gaugino mass pattern is that of mirage-mediation. The magnitudes of various SM Yukawa couplings point to a picture where scalar soft SUSY breaking terms are related to the geography of fields in the compactified dimensions. Higgs fields and third generation scalars extend to the bulk and occur in split multiplets with TeV scale soft masses. First a…
We examine production and decay of heavy neutral SUSY Higgs bosons pp-> H,\ A -> τ\barτ within the hMSSM and compare against a perhaps more plausible natural supersymmetry scenario dubbed m_h^{125}({\rm nat}) which allows for a natural explanation for m_{weak}\simeq m_{W,Z,h}\sim 100 GeV while maintaining m_h\simeq 125 GeV. We evaluate signal against various Standard Model backgrounds from γ,Z ->τ\barτ, t\bar{t} and vector boson pair production VV. We combine the transverse mass method for back-to-back (BtB) taus along with the ditau mass peak m_{ττ} method for acollinear taus as our signal ch…
The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly Coupled Free Fermionic Heterotic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented are systematic extensions of the well-known NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin, Ellis) set of basis vectors, which have been shown to produce phenomenologically realistic models. Statistics related to the number of U(1)'s, gauge group factors, non-Abelian singlets, ST SUSYs, as well as the gauge groups the…
Predictions for the scale of SUSY breaking from the string landscape go back at least a decade to the work of Denef and Douglas on the statistics of flux vacua. The assumption that an assortment of SUSY breaking F and D terms are present in the hidden sector, and their values are uniformly distributed in the landscape of D=4, N=1 effective supergravity models, leads to the expectation that the landscape pulls towards large values of soft terms favored by a power law behavior P(m(soft))~ m(soft)^n. On the other hand, similar to Weinberg's prediction of the cosmological constant, one can assume …
In order to significantly reduce the fine-tuning associated with the electroweak symmetry breaking in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we consider not only the minimal gravity mediation effects but also the minimal gauge mediation ones for a common supersymmetry breaking source at a hidden sector. In this "Minimal Mixed Mediation model," the minimal forms for the Kahler potential and the gauge kinetic function are employed at tree level. The MSSM gaugino masses are radiatively generated through the gauge mediation. Since a "focus point" of the soft Higgs mass parameter, m_{h_u…
The determination of the most straightforward evidence for the existence of the Superworld requires a guide for non-experts (especially experimental physicists) for them to make their own judgement on the value of such predictions. For this purpose we review the most basic results of Super-Grand unification in a simple and clear way. We focus the attention on two specific models and their predictions. These two models represent an example of a direct comparison between a traditional unified-theory and a string-inspired approach to the solution of the many open problems of the Standard Model. W…
Recent work on calculating string theory landscape statistical predictions for the Higgs and sparticle mass spectrum from an assumed power-law soft term distribution yields an expectation for m(h)~ 125 GeV with sparticles (save light higgsinos) somewhat beyond reach of high-luminosity LHC. A recent examination of statistics of SUSY breaking in IIB string models with stabilized moduli suggests a power-law for models based on KKLT stabilization and uplifting while models based on large-volume scenario (LVS) instead yield an expected logarithmic soft term distribution. We evaluate statistical dis…
We investigate the little hierarchy between Z boson mass and the SUSY breaking scale in the context of landscape of electroweak symmetry breaking vacua. We consider the radiative symmetry breaking and found that the scale where the electroweak symmetry breaking conditions are satisfied and the average stop mass scale is preferred to be very close to each other in spite of the fact that their origins depend on different parameters of the model. If the electroweak symmetry breaking scale is fixed at about 1 TeV by the supersymmetry model parameters then the little hierarchy seems to be preferred…
Dynamical supersymmetry breaking in a long-lived meta-stable vacuum is a phenomenologically viable possibility. This relatively unexplored avenue leads to many new models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. Here, we present a surprisingly simple class of models with meta-stable dynamical supersymmetry breaking: N=1 supersymmetric QCD, with massive flavors. Though these theories are strongly coupled, we definitively demonstrate the existence of meta-stable vacua by using the free-magnetic dual. Model building challenges, such as large flavor symmetries and the absence of an R-symmetry, are eas…
We review some basic flux vacua counting techniques and results, focusing on the distributions of properties over different regions of the landscape of string vacua and assessing the phenomenological implications. The topics we discuss include: an overview of how moduli are stabilized and how vacua are counted; the applicability of effective field theory; the uses of and differences between probabilistic and statistical analysis (and the relation to the anthropic principle); the distribution of various parameters on the landscape, including cosmological constant, gauge group rank, and SUSY-bre…
We consider 5-dimensional supersymmetric field theories where supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism (or, equivalently, by the F-term VEV of the radion). In such models, the radion effective potential is calculable in terms of the 5d gauge coupling, the UV cutoff of the 5d field theory, and the field content. We provide simple, explicit formulae for the leading part of the two-loop effective potential. Our analysis applies in particular to 5d orbifold GUTs motivated by heterotic orbifold models. We focus on potentially realistic models of this type and make the additional assu…
String theory has no parameter except the string scale $M_S$, so the Planck scale $M_\text{Pl}$, the supersymmetry-breaking scale, the EW scale $m_\text{EW}$ as well as the vacuum energy density (cosmological constant) $Λ$ are to be determined dynamically at any local minimum solution in the string theory landscape. Here we consider a model that links the supersymmetric electroweak phenomenology (bottom up) to the string theory motivated flux compactification approach (top down). In this model, supersymmetry is broken by a combination of the racetrack Kähler uplift mechanism, which naturally a…
The well-accepted Nelson-Seiberg theorem relates R-symmetries to supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking vacua, and provides a guideline for SUSY model building which is the most promising physics beyond the Standard Model. In the case of Wess-Zumino models with perturbative superpotentials, we revise the theorem to a combined necessary and sufficient condition for SUSY breaking which can be easily checked before solving the vacuum. The revised theorem provides a powerful tool to construct either SUSY breaking or SUSY vacua, and offers many practicable applications in low energy SUSY model building and …
The region of moduli space of string theories which is most likely to describe the "real world" is where the string coupling is about unity and the volume of extra compact dimensions is about the same size as the string volume. Here we map the landscape of this "central" region in a model-independent way, assuming only that the string coupling and compact volume moduli are chiral superfields of N=1 supergravity in 4 dimensions, and requiring only widely accepted conditions: that the supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking scale is about the weak scale and that the cosmological constant be of acceptably …
We show that a unique, most probable and stable solution for the wavefunction of the universe, with a very small cosmological constant $Λ_1 \simeq (\fracπ{l_p N})^2$, can be predicted from the supersymmetric minisuperspace with $N$ vacua, of the landscape of string theory without reffering to the antropic principle. Due to the nearest neighbor tunneling in moduli space lattice, the $N$-fold degeneracy of vacua is lifted and a discrete spectrum of bound state levels over the whole minisuperspace emerges. $SUSY$ is spontaneously broken by these bound states, with discrete nonzero energy levels $…
We describe a new type of discrete symmetry that relates heterotic-string models. It is based on the spectral flow operator which normally acts within a general N=(2,2) model and we use this operator to construct a map between N=(2,0) models. The landscape of N=(2,0) models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models for two important reasons: Firstly, N=1 spacetime SUSY requires (2,0) superconformal invariance and secondly, models with the well motivated by the Standard Model SO(10) unification structure are of this type. This idea was inspired by a new discrete symmetry in th…
Perturbative supersymmetry breaking on the landscape of string vacua is expected to favor large soft terms as a power-law or log distribution, but tempered by an anthropic veto of inappropriate vacua or vacua leading to too large a value for the derived weak scale -- a violation of the atomic principle. Indeed, scans of such vacua yield a statistical prediction for light Higgs boson mass m_h~ 125 GeV with sparticles (save possibly light higgsinos) typically beyond LHC reach. In contrast, models of dynamical SUSY breaking (DSB) -- with a hidden sector gauge coupling g^2 scanned uniformly -- lea…
The discovery that the number of physically consistent string vacua is on the order of 10^500 has prompted several statistical studies of string phenomenology. Contained here is one such study that focuses on the Weakly Coupled Free Fermionic String (WCFFHS) formalism. Presented here are systematic extensions of a variation on the NAHE (Nanopoulos, Antoniadis, Hagelin, Ellis) set of basis vectors. This variation is more conducive to the production of "mirrored" models, in which the observable and hidden sector particles are identical. This study is a parallel to the extensions of the NAHE set …
In this paper we discuss the issues of supersymmetry breaking and moduli stabilization within the context of E_8 x E_8 heterotic orbifold constructions and, in particular, we focus on the class of "mini-landscape" models. In the supersymmetric limit, these models admit an effective low energy field theory with a spectrum of states and dimensionless gauge and Yukawa couplings very much like that of the MSSM. These theories contain a non-Abelian hidden gauge sector which generates a non-perturbative superpotential leading to supersymmetry breaking and moduli stabilization. We demonstrate this ef…
If low-energy SUSY exists, LHC data favors a high mass scale for scalar superpartners (above a TeV), while sfermions and the dark matter can be parametrically lighter -- leading to a so-called split-spectrum. When combining this fact with the motivation from fundamental theory for shift-symmetric scalars (moduli) prior to SUSY breaking, this leads to a non-thermal history for the early universe. Such a history implies different expectations for the microscopic properties of dark matter, as well as the possibility of dark radiation and a cosmic axion background. In this paper we examine how cor…
CP violation, fermion masses and mixing angles including that of neutrinos are studied in an SUSY SO(10)$\times Δ(48)\times$ U(1) model with small $\tan β$. The family symmetry $Δ(48)$ associated with a simple scheme of U(1) charge assignment on various fields concerned in superpotential leads to unique Yukawa coupling matrices with zero textures. Thirteen parameters involving masses and mixing angles in the quark and charged lepton sector are successfully predicted by only four parameters. The masses and mixing angles for the neutrino sector can also be predicted without involving new paramet…
In this paper, we emphasize that a UV SUSY-breaking theory can be realized either linearly or nonlinearly. Both realizations form the dual descriptions of the UV SUSY-breaking theory. Guided by this observation, we find subtle identities involving the Goldstino field and matter fields in the standard nonlinear realization from trivial ones in the linear realization. Rather complicated integrands in the standard nonlinear realization are identified as total-divergences. Especially, identities only involving the Goldstino field reveal the self-consistency of the Grassmann algebra. As an applicat…
CP violation, fermion masses and mixing angles including that of neutrinos are studied in an SUSY SO(10)$\times Δ(48)\times$ U(1) model. The nonabelian SU(3) discrete family symmetry $Δ(48)$ associated with a simple scheme of U(1) charge assignment on various fields concerned in superpotential leads to unique Yukawa coupling matrices with zero textures. Thirteen parameters involving masses and mixing angles in the quark and charged lepton sector are successfully predicted by only four parameters. The masses and mixing angles for the neutrino sector could also be predicted by constructing an ap…
