We report on measurements of the dynamics of the collective spin length (total magnetization) and spin populations in an almost unit filled lattice system comprising about 10^4 spin S=3 chromium atoms, under the effect of dipolar interactions. The observed spin population dynamics is unaffected by the use of a spin echo, and fully consistent with numerical simulations of the S=3 XXZ spin model. On the contrary, the observed spin length decays slower than in simulations, and surprisingly reaches a small but nonzero asymptotic value within the longest timescale. Our findings show that spin coherences are sensitive probes to systematic effects affecting quantum many-body behavior that cannot be diagnosed by merely measuring spin populations.
With current magnetic field shielding and high precision detection in dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, it is possible to experimentally detect the low or zero field nonsecular dipolar dynamics. Here we analytically investigate the zero-field nonsecular magnetic dipolar interaction effect, with an emphasis on magnetization dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate under the single spatial mode approximation within the mean field theory. Due to the biaxial nature of the dipolar interaction, a novel resonance occurs in the condensate magnetization oscillation, contrast to the previou…
Symmetry-breaking magnetization dynamics of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) due to the dipole-dipole interaction are investigated using the mean-field and Bogoliubov theories. When a magnetic field is applied along the symmetry axis of a pancake-shaped BEC in the m = 0 hyperfine sublevel, transverse magnetization develops breaking the chiral or axial symmetry. A variety of magnetization patterns are formed depending on the strength of the applied magnetic field. The proposed phenomena can be observed in 87Rb and 23Na condensates.
We investigate long-range effects of the dipolar interaction in Bose-Einstein condensates by solving the time-dependent 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We study the propagation of excitations between non-overlapping condensates when a collective mode is excited in one of the condensates. We obtain the frequency shifts due to the long-range character of the dipolar coupling for the bilayer and also the trilayer system when the dipolar mode is excited in one condensate. The propagation of the monopolar and quadrupolar modes are also investigated. The coupled-pendulum model is proposed to qualitati…
We develop a variational theory for a dipolar condensate in an elongated (cigar shaped) confinement potential. Our formulation provides an effective one-dimensional extended meanfield theory for the ground state and its collective excitations. We apply our theory to investigate the properties of rotons in the system comparing the variational treatment to a full numerical solution. We consider the effect of quantum fluctuations on the scattering length at which the roton excitation softens to zero energy.
We consider a bilayer of dipolar bosons in which the polarization of dipoles are perpendicular to the planes. Using accurate static structure factor $S(q)$ data from hypernetted-chain calculation for single layer dipolar bosons we construct effective screened interactions for intralayer particles. We adopt the random-phase approximation for interlayer interactions. We study the instability of the homogeneous bilayer system against the formation of density waves by investigating the poles of the density-density response function. The dispersion of collective modes of this system also signals th…
The collective excitations of a zero-temperature, spin-polarized, harmonically trapped, two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gas are examined within the Thomas-Fermi von Weizsäcker hydrodynamic theory. We focus on repulsive interactions, and investigate the dependence of the excitation frequencies on the strength of the dipolar interaction and particle number. We find that the mode spectrum can be classified according to bulk modes, whose frequencies are shifted upward as the interaction strength is increased, and an infinite ladder of surface modes, whose frequencies are {\em independent} of the int…
We present a general method for obtaining the exact static solutions and collective excitation frequencies of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar atomic interactions in the Thomas-Fermi regime. The method incorporates analytic expressions for the dipolar potential of an arbitrary polynomial density profile, thereby reducing the problem of handling non-local dipolar interactions to the solution of algebraic equations. We comprehensively map out the static solutions and excitation modes, including non-cylindrically symmetric traps, and also the case of negative scattering lengt…
We calculate the collective excitations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the regime where it self-binds into droplets stabilized by quantum fluctuations. We show that the filament-shaped droplets act as a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide along which low angular momentum phonons propagate. The evaporation (unbinding) threshold occurring as the atom number $N$ is reduced to the critical value $N_c$ is associated with a monopole-like excitation going soft as $ε_0\sim(N-N_c)^{1/4}$. Considering the system in the presence of a trapping potential, we quantify the crossover from a trap-bound c…
We consider quasi-one-dimensional dipolar spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in the homogeneous-local-spin-orientation approximation, that is with unidirectional local magnetization. By analytically calculating the exact effective dipole-dipole interaction, we derive a Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the dissipative condensate magnetization dynamics, and show how it leads to the Stoner-Wohlfarth model of a uni-axial ferro-magnetic particle, where the latter model determines the stable magnetization patterns and hysteresis curves for switching between them. For an external magnetic field poi…
We perform collective spin measurements to study the buildup of two-body correlations between $\approx10^4$ spin $s=3$ chromium atoms pinned in a 3D optical lattice. The spins interact via long range and anisotropic dipolar interactions. From the fluctuations of total magnetization, measured at the standard quantum limit, we estimate the dynamical growth of the connected pairwise correlations associated with magnetization. The quantum nature of the correlations is assessed by comparisons with short and long time expansions, and numerical simulations. Our work shows that measuring fluctuations …
Recently, a seminal STIRAP experiment allowed the creation of 40K-87Rb molecules in the rovibrational ground state [K.-K. Ni et al., Science 322, 231 (2008)]. In order to describe such a polarized dipolar Fermi gas in the hydrodynamic regime, we work out a variational time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach. With this we calculate dynamical properties of such a system as, for instance, the frequencies of the low-lying excitations and the time-of-flight expansion. We find that the dipole-dipole interaction induces anisotropic breathing oscillations in momentum space. In addition, after release fro…
Motivated by recent experimental advances in creating polar molecular gases in the laboratory, we theoretically investigate the many body effects of two-dimensional dipolar systems with the anisotropic and $1/r^3$ dipole-dipole interactions. We calculate collective modes of 2D dipolar systems, and also consider spatially separated bilayer and multilayer superlattice dipolar systems. We obtain the characteristic features of collective modes in quantum dipolar gases. We quantitatively compare the modes of these dipolar systems with the modes of the extensively studied usual two-dimensional elect…
We study the collective excitations of polarized single-component quasi-two-dimensional dipolar fermions in an isotropic harmonic trap by solving the collisional Boltzmann-Vlasov (CBV) equation. We study the response to both monopole and quadrupole perturbations of the trap potential and investigate the character of excitations in each case. Simple analytic formulas are provided based on the linearized scaling ansatz and accurate numerical results are obtained by satisfying the first eight moments of the CBV equation. Except for the lowest lying monopole mode that exhibits a negligible damping…
Quantum degenerate Bose gases with an internal degree of freedom, known as spinor condensates, are natural candidates to study the interplay between magnetism and superfluidity. In the spinor condensates made of alkali atoms studied so far, the spinor properties are set by contact interactions, while magnetization is dynamically frozen, due to small magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. Here, we study the spinor properties of S=3 $^{52}$Cr atoms, in which relatively strong dipole-dipole interactions allow changes in magnetization. We observe a phase transition between a ferromagnetic phase and …
We examine collective modes, stability, and BCS pairing in a quasi-two-dimensional gas of dipolar fermions aligned by an external field. By using the (conserving) Hartree-Fock approximation, which treats direct and exchange interactions on an equal footing, we obtain the spectrum of single-particle excitations and long wavelength collective modes (zero sound) in the normal phase. It appears that exchange interactions result in strong damping of zero sound when the tilting angle between the dipoles and the normal to the plane of confinement is below some critical value. In particular, zero soun…
We have measured the effect of dipole-dipole interactions on the frequency of a collective mode of a Bose-Einstein condensate. At relatively large numbers of atoms, the experimental measurements are in good agreement with zero temperature theoretical predictions based on the Thomas Fermi approach. Experimental results obtained for the dipolar shift of a collective mode show a larger dependency to both the trap geometry and the atom number than the ones obtained when measuring the modification of the condensate aspect ratio due to dipolar forces. These findings are in good agreement with simula…
We report new results for the Thomas-Fermi groundstate and the quadrupolar modes of density oscillations of a spin- polarized dipolar interacting Bose-Einstein condensate for the case when the external magnetic field is not orientated parallel to a principal axis of a harmonic anisotropic trap.
We consider the ground state and the low-lying excitations of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in a bubble trap, i.e., a shell-shaped spherically symmetric confining potential. By means of an appropriate Gaussian ansatz, we determine the ground-state properties in the case where the particles interact by means of both the isotropic and short-range contact and the anisotropic and long-range dipole-dipole potential in the thin-shell limit. Moreover, with the ground state at hand, we employ the sum-rule approach to study the monopole, the two-, the three-dimensional quadrupole as well as the dip…
The collective dynamics of a dipolar fermionic quantum gas confined in a one-dimensional double-well superlattice is explored. The fermionic gas resides in a paramagnetic-like ground state in the weak interaction regime, upon which a new type of collective dynamics is found when applying a local perturbation. This dynamics is composed of the local tunneling of fermions in separate supercells, and is a pure quantum effect, with no classical counterpart. Due to the presence of the dipolar interactions the local tunneling transports through the entire superlattice, giving rise to a collective dyn…
We investigate Fermi liquid states of the ultra-cold magnetic dipolar Fermi gases in the simplest two-component case including both thermodynamic instabilities and collective excitations. The magnetic dipolar interaction is invariant under the simultaneous spin-orbit rotation, but not under either the spin or the orbit one. Therefore, the corresponding Fermi liquid theory is intrinsically spin-orbit coupled. This is a fundamental feature of magnetic dipolar Fermi gases different from electric dipolar ones. The Landau interaction matrix is calculated and is diagonalized in terms of the spin-orb…
We investigate effects of three-body contact interactions on a trapped dipolar Bose gas at finite temperature using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. We analyze numerically the behavior of the transition temperature and the condensed fraction. Effects of the three-body interactions, anomalous pair correlations and temperature on the collective modes are discussed.
We study the Fermi liquid properties of the cold atomic dipolar Fermi gases with the explicit dipolar anisotropy using perturbative approaches. Due to the explicit dipolar anisotropy, Fermi surfaces exhibit distortions of the $d_{r^2-3z^2}$-type in three dimensions and of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-type in two dimensions. The fermion self-energy, effective mass, and Fermi velocity develop the same anisotropy at the Hartree-Fock level proportional to the interaction strength. The Landau interaction parameters in the isotropic Fermi liquids become the tri-diagonal Landau interaction matrices in the dipol…
The ground states and collective excitations of trapped Fermion gases consisting of atoms with magnetic dipole moment are studied using a time-dependent density-matrix approach. The advantages of the density-matrix approach are that one-body and two-body observables are directly calculated using one-body and two-body density matrices and that it has a clear relation to the Hartree-Fock (HF) and time-dependent HF theory. The HF calculations show the magnetization of the gases when the dipole-dipole interaction is strong. It is shown that the tensor properties of the dipole-dipole interaction ar…
We investigate the evolution of the momentum distribution of a Bose-Einstein condensate subjected to an external small oscillatory perturbation as a function of the in-trap evolution of the condensate after the external perturbation is switched-off. Besides changing its momentum distribution, we observe that the cloud distributes the input energy among its normal collective modes, displaying center-of-mass dipolar mode and quadrupolar mode. While the dipolar mode can be easily disregarded, we show that the momentum distribution is closely tied to the quadrupolar oscillation mode. This convolut…
We introduce equations of motion for spin dynamics in a ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction, written using a vector expressing the superfluid velocity and a complex scalar describing the magnetization. This simple hydrodynamical description extracts the dynamics of spin wave and affords a straightforward approach by which to investigate the spin dynamics of the condensate. To demonstrate the advantages of the description, we illustrate dynamical instability and magnetic fluctuation preference, which are expressed in analytical forms.
We show that an analogue to the classical Einstein-de Haas effect can appear in ultracold dipolar Fermi gases. The anisotropic nature of dipole-dipole interactions can lead to a transfer of magnetization into orbital angular momentum. Remarkably, distinct from a Bose-Einstein condensate, this transfer is accompanied by twisting motion, where individual spin components rotate in opposite directions with larger orbital angular momenta than the full system, possibly leading to easier experimental observation of the effect. This feature is induced by the deformation of the Fermi surface and the di…
Photogenerated excitonic ensembles confined in coupled GaAs quantum wells are probed by a complementary approach of emission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic light scattering. Lateral electrostatic trap geometries are used to create dense systems of spatially indirect excitons and excess holes with similar densities in the order of 10$^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. Inelastic light scattering spectra reveal a very sharp low-lying collective mode that is identified at an energy of 0.44 meV and a FWHM of only ~50 $μ$eV. This mode is interpreted as a plasmon excitation of the excess hole system coupled to t…
We solve numerically exactly the many-body 1D model of bosons interacting via short-range and dipolar forces and moving in the box with periodic boundary conditions. We show that the lowest energy states with fixed total momentum can be smoothly transformed from the typical states of collective character to states resembling single particle excitations. In particular, we identify the celebrated roton state. The smooth transition is realized by simultaneous tuning short-range interactions and adjusting a trap geometry. With our methods we study the weakly interacting regime as well as the regim…
We study a Bose-Einstein condensate of 52Cr atoms confined in a toroidal trap with a variable strength of s-wave contact interactions. We analyze the effects of the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction by considering the magnetization axis to be perpendicular to the trap symmetry axis. In the absence of a central repulsive barrier, when the trap is purely harmonic, the effect of reducing the scattering length is a tuning of the geometry of the system: from a pancake-shaped condensate when it is large, to a cigar-shaped condensate for small scattering lengths. For a condensate in a tor…
The stability of an unpolarized two-component dipolar Fermi gas is studied within mean-field theory. Besides the known instability towards spontaneous magnetization with Fermi sphere deformation, another instability towards spontaneous formation of a spin-orbit coupled phase with a Rashba-like spin texture is found. A phase diagram is presented and consequences are briefly discussed.
We study the magnetic structure of the ground state of an itinerant Fermi system of spin-\nicefrac{1}{2} particles with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that, quite generally, the spin state of particles depend on its momentum, i.e., spin and orbital degrees of freedom are entangled and taken separately are not ``good'' quantum numbers. Specifically, we consider a uniform system with non-zero magnetization at zero temperature. Assuming the magnetization is along $z$-axis, the quantum spin states are $ǩ$-dependent linear combinations of eigenstates of the $σ_z$ Pauli matrix. This le…
The formation of a dense Bose-Einstein condensate in dark spin states of two-dimensional dipolar excitons is shown to be driven by a dynamical transition to the long-lived dark states. The condensate is stabilized by strong dipole-dipole interactions up to densities high enough for a dark quantum liquid to form. The persistence of dark condensation was observed in recent experiments. A model describing the non-equilibrium dynamics of externally driven coupled dark and bright condensates reproduces the step-like dependence of the exciton density on the pump power or on temperature. This unique …
Layered bosonic dipolar fluids have been suggested to host a condensate of interlayer molecular bound states. However, its experimental observation has remained elusive. Motivated by two recent experimental works [Hubert et al., Phys. Rev. X 9, 021026 (2019) and D. J. Choksy et al., Phys. Rev. B 103 045126 (2021)], we theoretically study, using numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations, the experimental signatures of collective interlayer pairing in vertically stacked indirect exciton (IX) layers. We find that IX energy shifts associated with each layer evolve non trivially as a funct…
The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in 2D dipolar systems has been studied recently by path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations [A. Filinov et al., PRL 105, 070401 (2010)]. Here, we complement this analysis and study temperature-coupling strength dependence of the density (particle-hole) and single-particle (SP) excitation spectra both in superfluid and normal phases. The dynamic structure factor, S(q,omega), of the longitudinal excitations is rigorously reconstructed with full information on damping. The SP spectral function, A(q,omega), is worked out from the one-particle Mats…
Two-component dipolar fermions in zigzag optical lattices allow for the engineering of spin-orbital models. We show that dipolar lattice fermions permit the exploration of a regime typically unavailable in solid-state compounds that is characterized by a novel spin-liquid phase with a finite magnetization and spontaneously broken SU(2) symmetry. This peculiar spin liquid may be understood as a Luttinger liquid of composite particles consisting of bound states of spin waves and orbital domain walls moving in an unsaturated ferromagnetic background. In addition, we show that the system exhibits …
We investigate the dynamical properties of a trapped finite-temperature normal Fermi gas with dipole-dipole interaction. For the free expansion dynamics, we show that the expanded gas always becomes stretched along the direction of the dipole moment. In addition, we present the temperature and interaction dependences of the asymptotical aspect ratio. We further study the collapse dynamics of the system by suddenly increasing the dipolar interaction strength. We show that, in contrast to the anisotropic collapse of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, a dipolar Fermi gas always collapses isotrop…
Strongly dipolar Bose gases can form liquid droplets stabilized by quantum fluctuations. In theoretical description of this phenomenon, low energy scattering amplitude is utilized as an effective potential. We show that for magnetic atoms corrections with respect to Born approximation arise, and derive modified pseudopotential using realistic interaction model. We discuss the resulting changes in collective mode frequencies and droplet stability diagram. Our results are relevant for recent experiments with erbium and dysprosium atoms.
We theoretically investigate the ground states and the spectrum of elementary excitations across the superfluid to droplet crystallization transition of an oblate dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. We systematically identify regimes where spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking leads to the emergence of a supersolid phase with characteristic collective excitations, such as the Higgs amplitude mode. Furthermore, we study the dynamics across the transition and show how these supersolids can be realized with standard protocols in state-of-the-art experiments.
In a recent Letter, Gopalakrishnan, Martin, and Demler [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111 (2013) 185304] show that quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Bose gases, subject to a Rashba spin-orbit coupling, exhibit a variety of spatially ordered, or crystalline, ground states, including a pentagonal quasicrystal. Indeed, as the authors say, realizing quasicrystalline condensates would provide new ways to explore the physics of quasicrystals, and in particular to study the quantum dynamics of their unique collective phason modes. Yet, the authors conclude that "there are typically additional phasons in quantum-mecha…
Arrays of ultra-cold dipolar gases loaded in optical lattices are emerging as powerful quantum simulators of the many-body physics associated with the rich interplay between long-range dipolar interactions, contact interactions, motion, and quantum statistics. In this work we report on our investigation of the quantum many-body dynamics of a large ensemble of bosonic magnetic chromium atoms with spin S = 3 in a three-dimensional lattice as a function of lattice depth. Using extensive theory and experimental comparisons we study the dynamics of the population of the different Zeeman levels and …

Dipolar interactions are ubiquitous in nature and rule the behavior of a broad range of systems spanning from energy transfer in biological systems to quantum magnetism. Here, we study magnetization-conserving dipolar induced spin-exchange dynamics in dense arrays of fermionic erbium atoms confined in a deep three-dimensional lattice. Harnessing the special atomic properties of erbium, we demonstrate control over the spin dynamics by tuning the dipole orientation and changing the initial spin state within the large 20 spin hyperfine manifold. Furthermore, we demonstrate the capability to quick…
